IU13 Announces STEM Educators Of The Year

Backpack Giveaway Switches Gears CrossNet Makes Changes To Annual Event By Ann Mead Ash

Knowing that this year’s CrossNet Ministries Student Backpack Giveaway would need to change to conform to COVID-19 restrictions, Lisa Kerstetter, CrossNet Ministries director of marketing and events, went online to see how other organizations were handling similar outreaches. “I researched big cities that do backpack giveaways, she said, noting that some organizations canceled, where others held drive-up events where a child’s chance to choose a pack was eliminated. “I want (area participants)

to have options, she said. “If we can let them in the building, they can choose. In addition to children having a chance to choose their backpacks, the hours of the event have been extended. This year’s backpack giveaway will be held at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Families are asked to register by the end of the day Monday, Aug. 10, for one of more than 800 available time slots. Online registration is available at https://signup.com/go/UeccQjr. Those without internet access may register by calling 717-355-2454.

In 2019, CrossNet volunteers and donors helped provide backpacks and school supplies to 585 New Holland-area students. This year’s event, set for Aug. 11, will include several safety precautions, such as registering for a time slot, limiting the number of people in the building, social distancing, and requiring masks for those age 3 and up.

Encouraging Creativity Jill Hertzog, artistic director of dance with Cavod Academy of the Arts, is excited about the theme for this year’s Camp Create, a summer camp experience specifically designed for teenagers and adults, those age 13 and up, with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

When the Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 announced the winners of this year’s STEM Educators of the Year award in early June, Manheim Central and ELANCO school district teachers were honored for their work implementing STEM curricula that is innovative and inquiry-based, integrates real-world applications, and utilizes assignments that include students from a variety of backgrounds and at different levels. Amy Carter, elementary STEM coach at Doe Run Elementary School in the Manheim Central School District (MCSD), was named elementary STEM Teacher of the Year, and Joseph Steinmacher, who teaches at Garden Spot See IU13 pg 7

“We are doing ‘Create With Purpose - What’s your purpose?’ said Hertzog, who noted that Cavod’s tagline is “Create With Purpose. “Each camper will have the chance to explore different passions and creative outlets, and we will touch on identity, how much they are loved and how much they are worth. This is the second year that Cavod, which is located at 665 W. Main St., New Holland, will hold Camp Create. This year’s camp will be held at Cavod from 4 to 6:30 p.m. starting on Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7. On Aug. 7, at 6 p.m., a showcase performance will be held for family and friends of campers in Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. A display of artwork created during camp will be held at the See Cavod pg 6

Participants in Camp Create, a Cavod Academy of the Arts summer camp experience specifically designed for teenagers and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will take part in a showcase for family and friends to be held at Cavod Theatre at the end of the camp.

The Pennsylvania Relief Sale, which supports the work of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), is an institution in the state. Held yearly at the Pennsylvania Farm Show building in Harrisburg, the event has been known to feature close to 400 handcrafted quilts, wall hangings, and comforters, along with opportunities to shop for handmade items and gifts and to bid on unique items during the Country Auction, Silent Auction, and Children’s Auction. The event is also known for homemade food and family-friendly activities. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the auction was canceled. Steven Stoltzfus of Leola, who has long been involved with the relief sale, along with a group of volunteers wanted to help make up for some of the funds lost due to the cancellation. “We’re holding just the coin auction, reported Stoltzfus. A variety of donated coins have been gathered to be sold at an auction that will be both live and online at the same time. The live auction will be held at the

Bareville Fire Hall, 211 E. Main St., Leola, on Friday, Aug. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. At the same time, the auction will be held online through https://hibid.com. The auction preview will be held beginning at 4 p.m. See Coin Auction pg 2

Cavod Camp To Stage “Frozen Jr.” In New Holland Cavod Academy’s summer musical theater camp for youths ages 10 to 18 will conclude with performances of “Frozen Jr.” at 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 14, 15, and 16, at the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland. The musical is based on the 2018 Broadway version of the Disney animated film. Auditions for the camp were held in mid-July, and the camp is slated to be held at Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. The complexities of handling online bidding and live bidding simultaneously will be addressed by having two auctioneers working in conjunction with each other. “The way this works, there will be an auctioneer bid calling with people in the audience, and, in addition, there will be a clerk sitting nearby with the computer,” explained Stoltzfus. Pre-bids may be placed online, with lots closing live at 5 p.m. “If someone puts in a pre-bid, that is the starting bid. When we are auctioning a particular lot live, a person can be on the computer to enter live bids.” Both internet bids and floor bids will be announced. “The clerk will report bids coming in by computer to the live auctioneer,” said Stoltzfus, who noted that the bidding link will be posted at https://pareliefsale.org. Lead coins in the auction will be a 1904 $2.50 gold piece, a 1997 American Eagle $5 gold coin, a one-tenth ounce gold piece, and a one-quarter ounce gold piece. A 10-ounce silver bar and an 1884CC Morgan dollar will be sold, as will a 1925 Stone Mountain half

dollar and 1923 Monroe/Adams centennial half dollar. An 1866 three-cent piece will go up for bids as well. “We will also have a nice selection of 2013 and 2020 Silver Eagles,” said Stoltzfus. In addition to the coin auction, a food fundraiser will be held at the Bareville Fire Company on Aug. 14, beginning at 4 p.m. It will include wings, french fries, and a beverage sold as a meal. Food will be sold on a drive-through or takeout basis. “We are hoping the income from the food will offset expenses of the auction to increase the coin auction profit,” said Stoltzfus, who noted that some of the food is being donated. All profits from the sale will help to support the work of MCC, with the goal of sharing God’s love and compassion by helping to meet basic human needs and making efforts for peace and justice. Anchored Ministries, formerly known as Anchored by Grace Ministries, has a new name, has adopted a new mission statement and has added even more services to benefit those in need in the community along with its mobile clothing closet. “We have a new name and an improved ministry,” said Erika Kanter, who runs the ministry along with her husband, Ian. “One thing we still want to be sure is at the core of who we are and what we do is Jesus. Keith Kerstetter, our graphic design artist, conveyed that beautifully with the new anchor logo.” According to its new mission statement, Anchored Ministries is a “community services ministry based in Elverson that is dedicated to empowering the local community while providing basic necessities needed to sustain a daily living in the name of Jesus Christ.” Initially, Anchored Ministries began with a 16-foot enclosed trailer that was transformed into a mobile clothing closet in May 2018 with the help of Morgantown Community Church (MCC), where the Kanters attend. The mobile trailer makes stops at sites in Berks, Lancaster, Montgomery and Chester counties, including at the Honey Brook Food Pantry and at CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. On July 4, 2018, Anchored Ministries established a headquarters and moved into the former Warwick Bible Church in Elverson. “We have grown exponentially, (and) our ministry has been blessed immeasurably,” said Erika. “Our trailer fleet has tripled in size. We have had two additional trailers (that were) 100% donated - a second 16-foot trailer and a 32-foot trailer. The 32-foot is completely outfitted as a second mobile clothing unit, while the 16foot one has been a miscellaneous use one. It is currently housing prom gowns while we build additional storage in our building.”

Abigail Wright (left) and Lilliana Kanter help prepare meals for Anchored Ministries’ community meal program. As part of the new outreach, free dinners are being distributed in the parking lot at Morgantown Community Church every Thursday through Aug. 20. The prom gowns are those left over from Anchored Ministries’ prom dress program, which took place at Garden Spot High School in partnership with CrossNet Ministries, as well as at Twin Valley High School. The program seeks to expand to additional school districts next year. “Having the additional trailers has allowed us to more than double our locations we travel to,” Erika pointed out. “We are now looking for, and praying about, a concession trailer to serve fresh, hot meals from, as well as a fourth enclosed trailer to act as a mobile food pantry for certain locations.” Last year, Anchored Ministries launched its annual Christmas gift giving program, through which businesses and families in the community sponsored 255 children in the Twin Valley School District. “This summer we launched our community meal program, sponsored by Berg Construction, where we serve a free community meal in the parking lot of MCC, takeout style, every Thursday through Aug. 20. After Aug. 20, it will then go to once a month, though we really hope we will be able to serve a sit-down

free community meal postCOVID.” Free meals are served from 5 to 8 p.m. If the dinners are gone prior to 7 p.m., a notice will be posted at www.facebook.com/Anchored MinistriesPA. MCC is located at 4221 Main St., Elverson. The next outreach will be the annual back-to-school event for Twin Valley School District on Saturday, Aug. 8, at MCC. “We are currently collecting new backpacks and school supplies (for) each child in attendance,” Erika explained, noting that children will also be able to “shop” for clothing, shoes and accessories. “We will host a similar back-toschool event for Daniel Boone School District in Birdsboro on Aug. 14. We will provide clothing, shoes and accessories for ELANCO during CrossNet’s back-to-school event as well.” The ministry’s annual winter coat giveaway will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, and the Christmas gift giving program is set for Saturday, Dec. 19. For more information, including how to make financial or clothing donations, readers may visit www.AnchoredMinistries.org.

Global Leadership Summit Slated The Global Leadership Network (GLN) is making inroads for business, nonprofit and ministry leaders around the world to learn, connect and glean inspiration for being world-changers by providing digital options of its annual Global Leadership Summit (GLS) in addition to the in-person sessions. The GLS, to be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 7, will also livestream in U.S. prisons, halfway houses, homeless shelters, rescue missions and human trafficking survivor organizations at no cost, enabling GLN to reach more underresourced audiences than ever

before. Additionally, GLN has discounted this year’s GLS ticket prices to enable individuals who have been financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to join. With the theme of “You Have Influence,” the GLS will include more than 15 world-class faculty, including Craig Groeschel, Amy Edmondson, Kaká, and T.D. Jakes, who will share their perspectives, equipping attendees with practical skills that attendees can apply. As before, the GLS will telecast live from the Chicago area to hundreds of host locations across the country. These host sites will welcome attendees into a local

experience where they can network with influencers and leaders in their community while furthering their own leadership skills. For those unable to join a local host site, an enhanced virtual experience will be provided, expanding the level of interactivity in an all-new digital platform. In-person gatherings will take place at the LCBC Church - Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, and LCBC Church - Ephrata Campus, 6 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata. To learn more, readers may visit https://globalleader ship.org/global-leadership -summit/.

New Holland Summer Arts Association has made the decision to cancel all shows in 2020, including the Fiddlers Picnic, due to the coronavirus pandemic. For more information, readers may search for “New Holland Summer Arts Association” on Facebook.

The day will be divided into three shifts. The first shift will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. The second will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., and the third shift will be from 4 to 7 p.m. During the breaks between shifts, backpacks will be reorganized, and the area will be disinfected. The giveaway will supply students attending kindergarten through 12th grade within the ELANCO School District with a new backpack filled with school supplies. It is preferred that children be present at the giveaway. Families should bring proof of residency such as a current utility bill. In addition to the free backpacks, free ice cream and a goodie bag will be available for each student. Anchored Ministries’ free mobile clothing closet will be present at the event. No registration is necessary to visit the closet. Free haircuts and health screenings were offered in the past, but they will not be available this year. To comply with COVID-19 guidelines, the number of people picking up backpacks at one time will be limited to 25. Family groups will be asked to stay together, and social distancing will be observed. Families will be given 20 minutes to find a backpack. Anyone age 3 and up who enters the building is

required to wear a mask. Presently, donations of backpacks and school supplies may be dropped off at the CrossNet Ministries offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland. New, sturdy backpacks, pens, spiral tablets, pocket folders, rulers, notebook paper, three-ring binders, highlighters, crayons, colored pencils, pencil cases, glue sticks, erasers, and small tissue packets are requested. During sort week, which will be held from Monday, Aug. 3, through Thursday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, supplies may be donated at the CrossNet Youth Center. Donors who bring items to CrossNet in person are required to wear a mask while dropping them off. Kerstetter believes that it is essential for each child to start school with the necessary supplies. “My philosophy is starting the school year with a full backpack and some needed resources … and fresh clothing goes a long way to build confidence in a student, helping to (promote) success in the school year,” she said. In 2019, CrossNet gave away 585 backpacks. In 2020, more than 600 may be required to meet the needs of ELANCO children. More information about the mission of CrossNet is available at www.elancocross.org.

EPAC Cancels Remainder Of Season After much reflection, the board of directors of the Ephrata Performing Arts Center (EPAC) has decided to officially postpone its 2020 season until 2021. When making the decision, the board followed local, state, and federal guidelines and recommendations, as well as looked at what its fellow members in the performing arts community were planning for 2020. Artistic director Edward R. Fernandez is planning to move many of the 2020 mainstage shows and events to the 2021 season. For those who are current subscribers or ticket holders for the 2020 season, their tickets

and subscriptions can be automatically moved to the 2021 season. If they are unable to attend the rescheduled shows in 2021, they may consider donating the value of their tickets or subscription to EPAC as a tax-deductible contribution. All subscribers and ticket holders will receive a letter with these updates, but they can also contact the EPAC box office for additional details. EPAC is committed to producing exciting new content during the closure and making updates to the theater for the future safety and comfort of its patrons. EPAC has raised more than $15,000 toward the campaign thus far and

is also planning an online auction in the fall. Additional announcements about virtual and smallscale programming for the fall and holiday season will be announced in the near future. EPAC experienced a water leak at the theater during its closure which resulted in significant damage to its shop area, green room, rehearsal room, prop room, and conference room. EPAC is working with the Ephrata Borough to repair and remediate the damage. EPAC plans to announce ways that the community can support its reopening efforts and the replacement of items that have been lost.

same time. Hertzog said that the showcase is important because it gives those close to the campers a chance to be part of what the participants have learned. Hertzog helped plan the 2019 camp, and she took the role of designing it again this year, but Jess Rajski will serve as the teacher. “(The daily schedule) will be similar to last year,” said Hertzog, who noted that because Cavod is a Christian organization, each session will begin with a time of devotions and the introduction of a verse that will be the theme for that evening. Socially distanced games and times to connect and get to know each other will be part of the opening exercises. “They will take dance class,” said Hertzog, who noted that the foundational skills of jazz, ballet, and hip-hop will all be included. “(We want to) keep it really fun and upbeat and lighthearted,” said Hertzog. Dance will be followed by working on an art project that is based on exploring individual purpose and identity. “There will be a musical theater time,” said Hertzog, noting that the segment will include a song with motion, using basic percussion instruments such as tambourine, and dance moves. “We will be integrating music (into the camp) as much as we can,” Hertzog said. Camp will close with a review of the verse, show-andtell activities based on that night’s theme, and an additional game before saying goodbye.

Cavod Academy classes may run an hour or more, but during the 2019 Camp Create session, organizers found that it really worked to have a short dance class, followed by art and then musical theater incorporating dance. “It keeps the campers engaged,” said Hertzog, who noted that two young, energetic Cavod students will be assisting Rajski with teaching. The camp is following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for all summer camps, including masks, hand sanitizing, and temperature checks. Hertzog noted that the classrooms have been outfitted with heavy duty air filters, and that it is easy to do social distancing with the small group of students attending Camp Create. More information about the camp and the academy’s response to COVID-19 restrictions may be found at www.CavodAcademy.com. “Camp went really well last year,” said Hertzog, noting that there were few changes in the design of the 2020 camp. “The campers were so excited once they got to be on stage (at the showcase),” she said, adding that it was a joy to share with students about how God has designed and created them and tying the arts into their identities. “I feel like each student got a shining moment (at the showcase),” she said. “They are proud of themselves, and that is a good thing.”

Steinmacher was completely surprised by the honor because he does not know who nominated him. He was asked by a member of the IU13 staff to apply. “Being nominated was quite a surprise, let alone winning,” he said, adding that he is honored to have received the award. “I do know that we have built a special program at Garden Spot High School (GSHS) over the past few years,” he shared, noting that he has been fortunate to work in the technology and engineering department alongside teachers Mark Kaufman, Mike Stitzer, and Cody Stoneback. “Together, we have created an impressive program that gives students unique STEM experiences,” he said, adding, “So although I was humbled to receive the award, I am also incredibly proud to be a part of that team.” Steinmacher said that he sent several documents and pieces of information as part of the application process. “I wrote a few paragraphs outlining what our technology and engineering

Carter said she was honored and humbled to have been chosen. “I have been so inspired by other STEM professionals in Lancaster County and around the nation,” she said, noting that in the past year, a new STEM curriculum was created for all kindergarten through fourthgrade learners in MCSD. “We grew our program to not only include integrating STEM in the classroom, but also added STEM as a dedicated part of our cycle day rotations for all grades,” explained Carter, who said that she is proud to be a small part of our larger STEM ecosystem looking to inspire the next generation to be the creators and innovators of their world. Carter was asked to apply for the award by her MCSD colleagues and other STEM professionals. She submitted an updated resume and completed an online application that included information about student demographics, the structure and

UDS Service Dogs will host its first golf outing on Friday, Aug. 28, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Program manager Lori Breece hopes it will become an annual event. “We have been trying to find a signature event that can bring in strong revenue for our program and get the community engaged,” Breece remarked. Landis Communities offered pointers in planning the event. Volunteers met with representatives of golf courses around Lancaster County to see who would want to partner with UDS Service Dogs, and Meadia Heights was the most eager. The Aug. 28 date was scheduled in August 2019. Breece said that when the shutdown occurred, she was afraid that the outing might have to be postponed or canceled, but final planning for the event is going strong. On Aug. 28, golfers may check in beginning at 8 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and will take a scramble format. Refreshments will be provided. A barbecue buffet is set for 2 p.m. Opportunities to win gift baskets will be available. Additionally, UDS clients and their working service dogs, as well as puppies in training, are slated to attend. Breece hopes that the program’s newest dog - a Doberman pinscher - will have arrived by then and can be introduced at the outing. This will be the first Doberman to go through the UDS Service Dogs program, although Breece has had a pet Doberman for six years. The program’s primary breed is the Labrador retriever, but because Dobermans are tall, they are better suited to providing stability when adults move from sitting to standing and vice versa. Breece had initially hoped to make $50,000 from the golf outing, but revenue expectations have been cut by half. “Any success will be a positive success because it’s new for us,” she said. The proceeds will be used to

purchase more puppies for the program and cover veterinary costs, which can reach $2,000 per animal. With about 12 new puppies every year, UDS Service Dogs has vet bills for 25 dogs a year. Breece noted that in total, the program invests $25,000 in each dog. Clients are charged just $5,000. “We haven’t raised prices in 15 years,” Breece said. Breece is excited about the evolution the program has undergone in recent years. She credited the change to the implementation of a better business plan and processes four years ago. “We had to commit to bringing in more puppies (to be trained),” Breece said. “Now we’re placing six to nine dogs a year. We have eight staff members and 30 puppies in different stages of training. That’s a lot of growth.” Only a portion of the dogs that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility dogs or become pets. Several UDS Service Dogs interact with children in schools and with clients in a counseling office near Philadelphia. Breece would like to increase the services the dogs provide. Currently, staff members are taking classes to become certified to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines. “I can’t wait to do it because I know it’ll help these children who have been through so much,” Breece commented. “I know how dogs are already helping in schools. The centers will partner each dog with a child, and the dog will be with them as they move through the court system.” Anyone who would like to support UDS Service Dogs by sponsoring the golf outing may contact Breece at 717-715-8753 or lorib@udservices.org by Saturday, Aug. 1, and golfers may register to play in the outing at www.udservices.org/golf through Friday, Aug. 14.

Dr. Donald Lee and Catherine Bortoli Singletary celebrated their 62nd anniversary on June 14. Their daughter Suzanne Lee Potteiger and Suzanne’s husband, James, marked their 17th anniversary on the same date. The two couples celebrated with an RV trip through West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky, which was planned by Suzanne. The trip included two live theater performances, a visit to Graceland, a stop at the Jim Beam Distillery, a tour of Churchill Downs, a barbecue festival and visits to other attractions such as museums. At the Grand Ole Opry, they received a VIP backstage tour during the show. The VIP experience included a photo opportunity, the inclusion of their names in the program and an announcement to the audience honoring them. Don and Cathy met at a beach party at Michigan Beach Sand Dunes in Indiana. They were married at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Joliet, Ill., and later renewed their vows on the day that Suzanne and James were married at the Ephrata Cloister. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Jeffrey Lee Singletary, the son of Don and Cathy and brother of Suzanne. In addition to Suzanne and Jeffrey, Don and Cathy are the parents of Sherie Lee and Anne Lee. There are 10 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. Don is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

easy to serve simply. Make it healthy. Dry spice rubs incorporating citrus, black garlic, ginger, turmeric and peppers can help to build immunity, promote gut health and lower inflammation. Adding fresh rosemary to seasonings may cancel out the potentially carcinogenic effects of the grill. Consider using different types of oils and vinegars, like macadamia nut or truffle oil and passionfruit or blackberry vinegar. Let meats and chicken marinate for 24 hours if possible and vegetables for up to eight hours. Save fruit peels. Cutting up lemons, pineapple, papaya or oranges? The acid and enzymes in those fruits help to tenderize meats and make them more juicy. One can opt for tougher, more inexpensive cuts of steak like flank, hanger or skirt and place them in a gallon-size resealable plastic bags to marinade for up to two days using the fruit peels, along with a bottle of flavorful, dark beer. Keep it lean. Opt for leaner cuts and make half the plate vegetables. For plant-based eaters, consider black bean and mushroom burgers for a hearty, satisfying bite. For the omnivores, choose wild-caught seafood, beef, lamb, chicken, pork and other animal products that are humanely raised, without growth hormones or antibiotics, and fed with the right diet. Consider bison, a lean red meat that is always free range, and serve it on a lettuce or portobello mushroom bun topped with grilled vegetables. Eat the rainbow. Grill a variety of vegetables in aluminum foil to keep them moist. Bell peppers, zucchini, squash, and eggplant make a flavorful accompaniment to meats. Readers may also try grilling romaine lettuce, radicchio and peaches for a salad.

ATGLEN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH: E. Main and Dallas Sts., Atglen, PA. Joe Newsome, Interim Pastor. Join us Sundays at 11am as we preach Christ crucified, risen and coming again so all may come to a personal, saving relationship with Christ.

Now that it is summer, many people are likely firing up their grills for cookouts. Mareya Ibrahim, celebrity chef, author and founder of www.eatcleaner.com, has offered summer barbecue tips, including food safety advice. Start with the basics. In addition to a grill, basic supplies include cutting boards, a marinating tray, tongs, a spatula, metal skewers and grilling planks. People should marinate raw meats in a tray separate from serving. Applewood and cedar grilling planks and grill papers may be used to infuse food with a smoky flavor and add moisture and a pleasing aroma. The same goes for different types of wood chips. Metal skewers can make individual serving sizes easy and fun to eat. Pay attention to safety. Dirty, greasy grills with a buildup of meat juices and grease are potential storehouses of foodborne illnesses. Grilling also creates smoke laden with potentially carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which end up as ash on the surface of whatever is being cooked and can be absorbed back into the food. A good grill brush with a stainless steel head gets rid of stubborn meat, cheese and vegetables. Also, people should make sure to use separate cutting boards for raw meats and vegetables to prevent cross-contamination. Be cleanup conscious. Instead of plates, spread a “tablecloth of butcher paper for easy cleanup. Marinate foods in plastic resealable bags. Cook individual portions in aluminum to make serving easy and to prevent food from falling through the grill cracks. Instead of using silverware, opt for finger-food size portions, such as sliders and food on skewers. Corn on the cob and watermelon slices make great side dishes and are

has a credit history, the better. No matter what job someone has, he or she should try to save money and budget. It is important to secure funds early on, so whether someone is starting a full-time job or has signed up for a new credit card, it is important to know where to begin when budgeting. The 50/20/30 rule is key to building savings. Individuals should spend only up to 50% of their after-tax income on essentials, such as housing and food; 20% on financial priorities, such as savings and paying off debt; and 30% on lifestyle choices, which can include treating oneself. Especially if cash gifts were received from graduation, it may seem exciting to have some extra money in one’s pocket to spend right now, but individuals should take a step back. The money received from friends and family is the perfect start to an emergency fund. Whether it is a portion or all of the money received, adding to an emergency fund can eliminate future financial stress and frustration when something major occurs for which one would typically need money. Additionally, simple ways to save money include comparing prices at different stores before purchasing, shopping the sale and clearance sections, and timing purchases to score the best deals. Shoppers can make purchases through a cashback site to earn back a percentage of qualifying purchases from a variety of stores. It is can be easy to compare oneself to others in real life or on social media and to want to spend money on the latest sneakers, phone, vacation, and more, but individuals should not be fooled. However, individuals should remember that the more individuals save now, the more they can do later without having to worry if they will be able to pay their bills.

Applications for the COVID-19 Hazard Pay Grant Program are open until Friday, July 31, according to state Sen. Andy Dinniman. The program was established to help employers provide hazard pay to employees in life-sustaining occupations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The funds come through the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA), and the CFA is authorized to adopt guidelines to ensure grants are made available to all geographic areas of the

money that people donate as a percentage of their income, SmartAsset first calculated the total net income of all people in each county. To do this, the company used tax return data and accounted for federal, state, and local taxes paid. Researchers also accounted for deductible entries, including mortgage interest, mortgage points, and mortgage insurance payments. They then divided each county’s total charitable donations by its total net income to see how much county residents are donating relative to their income.
