CrossNet Ministries will hold its second Drive-In Dinner and Auction at Garden Spot Village on Aug. 28.

Drive-In Experience: Take Two! CrossNet Schedules Summer Fundraiser BY ANN MEAD ASH

n the summer of 2020, organizers of CrossNet Ministries’ annual evening gala traditionally held in the Garden Spot Village (GSV) gardens, sought a way to hold a safe event in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The result was the first CrossNet Drive-In Dinner and Auction. CrossNet Ministries director Meredith Dahl noted that the event leant itself to the continued uncertainty with regard to the pandemic. She said, “(The drive-in) was really successful. We had such positive feedback from attendees (who) liked the casualness … and wanted to do it again.” The second Drive-In Dinner and Auction will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Cars should arrive at the parking lot 9 by 6 p.m. According to Dahl, attendees can

Chesapeake Bay. “We have something for everybody,” noted Dahl. To keep the atmosphere lively, Downtown Sound will play a variety of music from the 1960s to the 1980s. “It’s fun pop music … Motown … music that people know,” said Dahl, who will provide a brief update on the ministry along with Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries. A video on the ministry will be shown as well. “Every ticket comes with a gift,” said Dahl, who noted that last year CrossNet lunch coolers were given away. “It’s just a great night out supporting CrossNet and the community,” she added. Tickets, which will be based on two people per car with an extra charge for additional riders, may be purchased by calling 717-355-2454, visiting www.elancocross.org, or stopping in at CrossNet’s 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, location.

On the afternoon of July 13, representatives and volunteers from four organizations met in the parking lot of the New Holland Mennonite Church. Piled in the parking lot were skids of food items, including a large quantity of chicken products provided by Tyson Foods. The food distribution event was one of several on a tour that unites Tyson, Feed the Children, and Americold, a cold storage transporter, with a local partner – often a school – to help provide the community with nutritious food. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is a well-known saying. It is a concept that organizers of the annual Woodcrest 3D Archery Shoot have found to work well. “We pretty much do the same thing over and over, and the guys still keep coming,” said Jason Martin, operations director for Woodcrest Retreat, a camp and conference center located at 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata. The 12th annual shoot will be held at Woodcrest on Saturday, Aug. 28. The course will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., after which a hot brunch will be served. The course will reopen at 11 a.m. and remain open until 3 p.m. There is a fee to take part in the shoot, which includes brunch, a speaker, and opportunities to win door prizes. The price will be discounted for those age 15 and under. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in only the afternoon shoot. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together. This year’s course will consist of 30 targets depicting North American wildlife. The speaker during brunch will be Tim Stauffer, pastor at East Hanover Mennonite Church in Hershey, who will deliver a short meditation on a hunting-related topic. As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items mostly provided by Weaver’s Store in Fivepointville. Vendors specializing in outdoor sporting equipment will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general oper-

ating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. It is necessary to raise approximately $85,000 yearly to cover the camp budget. Proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournament in hopes of reaching that goal. Last year, more than 140 shooters took part in the event, and 21 sponsors joined in to help the cause. Target sponsorships are available for this year’s shoot. Individuals interested in sponsoring may call 717-738-2233. Woodcrest, which is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps, along with a Conquerors special needs camp. Martin reported

that in 2021 more than 1,800 youngsters will attend camp at Woodcrest, representing an increase of 400 youngsters more than the previous attendance record.

When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, an organization that helps create financial solvency in 15 countries through savings and microfinance groups, looks back on the last 18 months, he points out that the organization did something out of the ordinary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We initially (gave) a lot of aid,” said Rutt, who noted that HOPE spent $1 million to help clients. Rutt praised HOPE CEO Peter Greer for his leadership of the organization through the tumultuous time. “(None of us) knew what we were facing, but there was a lot of prayer, reliance on God, our board, our team, and the indigenous leaders and clients in the world,” he said. To help offset those expenditures, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its 21st annual golf tournament, to be held at three different locations on Friday, Sept. 17. The round at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave.,York, will begin at 1 p.m. Two rounds will be held the same day at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Dr.,

Lebanon, beginning at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. The third location will be Bridgewater Golf Club, 601 Chestnut Hill Road, York, beginning at 9 a.m. More information about the tournaments may be found at www.hopeinternational.org /pagolf. Those who wish to sponsor the event may email asmith@hopeinternational.org or call 717-464-3220, ext. 544. Golfers are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 3. Rutt noted that the pandemic pushed what he calls the “fragile fringe,” of about 100 million people below the poverty line. “But there were bright spots,” added Rutt. “There was resilience, and a Marie Ndereyimana is a lot of our clients have grown.” HOPE International client Rutt went on to tell the story in Burundi, East Africa. of Marie Ndereyimana, a client in Burundi, East Africa. After Marie’s husband died in 2014, all his property reverted back to his family, as is the custom in that country. Marie was connected to a church that hosts a HOPE International savings group called Mutual Support. Marie joined the group and grew both spiritually and in her business All Types sense. “She was making about of Fencing 50 cents a day working in Retail & Wholesale See HOPE pg 4

Eventually Marie began keeping goats, and she purchased rental properties. When Marie learned that members of her deceased husband’s family were in financial trouble, she forgave them and helped them financially. “She got them connected to their own savings groups,” said Rutt. “It’s a really cool cycle because she used her talents and skills, and she is now able to help others in the community,” he added. “(Marie is)

Churchtown Day, featuring community-wide yard sales and specialty foods prepared at Caernarvon Fire Company, will be presented by the Caernarvon Historical Society on Saturday, Aug. 7. “We’ve had it for years on the first Saturday in August, but because of the coronavirus we had to cancel last year, but we’re back,” said society president Yvonne Styer. “It’s a big event for people to come out and find bargains. They can spend all morning going up and down the road.” She noted that yard sales will extend along Route 23 into neighboring communities as well. Beginning at 6 a.m., the Caernarvon Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will offer a grab-and-go breakfast, featuring egg sandwiches, coffee and juice. Beginning at 9 a.m., the fire company will offer a carryout lunch. The meal will include a barbecued pulled pork sandwich, pickle, applesauce, cookies, chips and a beverage. Pulled pork will also by sold by the quart. The fire company is located at 2145 Main St., Narvon. Caernarvon Historical Society will host a flea market at its property, 2148 Main St., Narvon, and at the property next door, where the Caernarvon Elementary School once stood. Historical society members will also sell items outside their organization’s building. “(We provide) a 12-footwide plot; (vendors) bring their own tables and they are responsible for (cleaning up) any debris or items they didn’t sell,” explained Styer, noting that vendors who park their vehicles at their yard sale spaces will set up where the school was. “ We don’t specify the depth of the space. We figure all total we can average 30 spaces.” Proceeds from the flea market will benefit the society’s renovation project at its headquarters, which includes the addition of a restroom, a ramp to provide handicapped accessibility and an archive room. “In the archive room, we will (store items) that have

been donated to us,” Styer noted. “We do a display inside our building. Periodically, we change it. Now, we will have a place to put things that are not on display at the time.” “We have been working on (the project) for two years,” she added. “We are hoping it is finished by the 7th.” An open house to formally unveil the completion of the project will take place in September.

Early Learning Center (NHELC) with a goal of providing food items to 400 area families. Albert Gonzales, human resources manager, with Tyson Foods in New Holland, explained that the problem of hunger involves logistics rather than scarcity. Rural areas may have less access to food and limited feeding program support. Gonzales noted that the Tyson facility in New Holland produces products for the National School Lunch Program. “Child nutrition is very important to us,” he said. Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor of New Holland Mennonite Church, noted that church members grow produce on the grounds to help feed NHELC families and donate to the CrossNet Ministries Nutrition Center. “Approximately 41% of the 124 children at the center are low-income,” she explained. “Their lives are difficult even without a pandemic interruption. We are grateful for the protein and dry goods to supplement the fresh vegetables our families are getting.” Other speakers at the event included Joe Allegro, senior director of corporate partnerships for Feed the Children; Donald Herrington, New Holland Borough Council president; Scott Cox, general manager for Lancaster-Area Americold; Tina Thompson, outreach director for Sen. Ryan Aument; and Priscilla Eberly, chief of staff for Rep. David Zimmerman. Nadine Larkin, assistant school superintendent for the ELANCO School District,

Allegro noted that food items for an NHELC pantry and school supplies would be donated to the organization. “We want children coming to school ready to learn, explore, and grow because their basic needs have been met,” said Larkin. spoke of the importance of good nutrition for school-age children. She noted that the district’s strategic plan includes working with community partners to provide environments, opportunities, and resources designed to eliminate barriers to learning. “By working with people such as Feed the Children or NHELC, we make sure families have access to food, supplies, and services that are essential to the success of our

Big Spring Farm To Host Two-Day Event Big Spring Farm will once again offer its Hay Day and Big Spring Farm Day, which will be open to the public on Friday, Aug. 6, and Saturday, Aug. 7, respectively. Admission is free. This two-day event is designed for guests to explore past ways of life at the farm, 735 Spruce Road, New Holland. The Friday event will kick off at 1 p.m. with displays and demonstrations of early hay tools, scythe sharpening and hay cutting, a tumble-and-dump rake, saw milling, a horse-power hay hook used to unload hay, and more. A demonstration of horse training will occur from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday’s Big Spring Farm Day will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. New this year will be a wood shingle mill demonstration. Demonstrations will also include threshing by hand with a flail, by horsepower, and powered by steam engines and tractors; loom weaving; log sawing, behive oven breadmaking; and pottery making. Special Saturday events will include German singing at 12:05 p.m. and a 1 p.m. parade in which attendees may drive their own antique tractor, farm equipment, horse-drawn wagon, or buggy. Food will be available for purchase. For instance, on Friday, pulled pork and bread baked in a behive oven will be featured. On Saturday, sausage sandwiches, iron-kettle soup, and more will be on hand. These Big Spring Farm events are sponsored by the Swiss Pioneer Preservation Association, a nonprofit organization. For details, call Lewis Leid at 717-475-0318 or Raymond Zimmerman at 717-354-7139.
