Three centuries of worship
Weaverland celebrates with bus tours and more
BY ANN MEAD ASHInthe back of the church where the Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community meets at 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, there is a hallway decorated with historical plaques dedicated to the faith story of Weaverland. “There is a tremendous history and story of God’s faithfulness even through World War I and World War II,” said Brian Martin, lead pastor and bishop, who recounted how pacifists were jailed during World War I, but during World War II lent their talents to the community in work camps due in part to the farm furlough plan, which was written by Weaverland members Israel B. Good and Ben Weaver, working with Congressman William Griest. “We have a copy of a handwritten letter from Woodrow Wilson (dated Nov. 19, 1917), noting I.B. Good and Ben Weaver and calling the bill a good thing,” said Brian.
On Saturday, Oct. 7, and Sunday, Oct. 8, the church will celebrate “300 Years of God’s Faithfulness”
with an event that will include bus tours, worship, a fellowship meal and presentation, and cemetery tours. The celebration is based on the arrival of the three Weber brothers from Switzerland on the 3,000 acres they were granted by William Penn in 1723 in what is now called the Weaverland Valley. Weaver is the anglicized version of the German Weber.
On Oct. 7, bus tours will leave the church at 9 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Tour guide Ken Sensenig, known for his historical knowledge and storytelling abilities, will lead tour takers to more than a dozen sites, including early homes along Weaverland Road, the Peter Martin Cabin, the Pike Meetinghouse, the Groffdale Mennonite Church, and several cemeteries, including the Old Weberthal Cemetery. Lunch will be included with both tours. Individuals interested in taking part may visit www.weaverland.org and click on “Anniversary Weekend Events” to register. There is a cost to take a tour.
On Oct. 8, worship services at 8 and
10:30 a.m. will include “Remembering Our Story,” with Keith Weaver, retired LMC - a Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches - moderator and bishop, followed by “Pressing Forward in Christ” with Rodney Martin, member of the LMC bishop elder team, and “Inviting Our Story to Be My Story,” by Brian. A fellowship meal following the second service will feature author
A peachy tradition
BY ANN MEAD ASHCedar Grove Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Route 322 and Route 897 in East Earl, has held a peach festival each August for many years. During COVID-19 restrictions, the event was toned down to include only church members and church attendees, but in 2022, the public festival returned.
For 2023, the Peach Fest, as it is now called, will be held at the church on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. As in the past, the event will feature a flea market, book sale, silent auction, See Cedar Grove pg 4
and historian John Ruth presenting “This Very Ground, This Crooked Affair.” “In the afternoon, there will be a walking tour of the two cemeteries here (at the church),” said Brian, who noted the tours will be led by Sensenig.
Brian, who, like many church members, can trace his family heritage back to early settlers in the area,
noted that the first church, a log cabin, was built at the present location in 1733. A stone building was constructed in 1766. “There have been a number of builds over the years,” said Brian, with the present building dating to 1926. “We have expanded at least three times since it was built,” said Brian, who added that the church was See Weaverland pg 3

Ministry helps women around the world
BY ANN MEAD ASHKathy Baker, who oversees the LuoPad ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in New Holland, has an unusual request. “We are asking the community to donate gently used towels,” said Baker, who has already asked parish members for donations. “They can be any size towels, hand towels, or washcloths,” she continued. “We can’t use bathmats because they are too thick.”
Baker is seeking the towels for a group of about a dozen women who meet at the church, 150 Water St., New Holland, the last three
Thursdays of each month in the morning. The group creates LuoPads, washable, reusable feminine hygiene pads, for Unto, an organization that provides humanitarian aid to developing countries. Unto has a Global Logistics Center in Mount Joy.
“This is our little workshop,” said Baker, gesturing around the room at the church where volunteers were hard at work creating the pads. Baker explained that the kits the women complete include about six finished pads, a washcloth, two pairs of underwear, and more in a bag. Pads come in large, medium, See Ministry pg 2

and small sizes, and each is completed with a snap. “Unto labels them and ships them by the skid. (LuoPads are) the most requested item from Unto,” noted Baker Baker explained that each pad begins when the form is traced on a towel and cut out before being shipped back to Unto for sewing. When the pieces are returned to the group, the outside is created from flannel and stuffed with the towel piece. “Then
we sew all the way around and in the middle to make it more secure,” said Baker, who said that the snap is added at Unto. Baker estimated that the ladies complete 10 large boxes a month.
The group, which is mostly made up of church members, has been meeting to make LuoPads for about 18 months. In addition to towels, Baker said the group would welcome new volun-
teer members. Individuals who are interested in donating towels or volunteering

Nauman Cabinetry sold to Alliance Custom Cabinetry
The owners of Ames Construction Inc., a commercial general contractor based in Ephrata, sold their Nauman Cabinetry division, located in Lancaster, to Alliance Custom Cabinetry of East Earl on July 20. Alliance focuses primarily on the residential market while Nauman is focused solely on commercial cabinetry. Alliance plans to use the deal to help it expand its presence into the commercial arena.
The agreement also involved two real estate deals. The owners of Ames Construction sold the property where Nauman is headquartered at 351 Sprecher Road, Lancaster, to Alliance. Alliance will move its entire
operation to this facility.
In turn, Alliance sold its current property at 857/859 Broad St. (Route 897), East Earl, to the owners of Ames. Ames will move its Eby Exteriors division to this facility. Eby Exteriors is currently based in Akron and focuses on residential and light commercial replacement work as well as additions and remodeling.
The business sale and the real estate settlement were handled by Legacy Law of Lititz. Both real estate sales were brokered by U.S. Commercial Realty, with Scott Bradbury representing Alliance Custom Cabinetry and Phil Eby representing Ames Construction Inc.

and bake sale, along with food items for purchase and free ice cream for children.
The menu for the Peach Fest features a variety of foods but focuses on peaches, with peach-flavored items available for purchase throughout the event. Breakfast items will include pancakes with or without peach topping and whipped cream, sausage and egg casserole, and coffee. “The casserole is back by request,” said Barbara MacMaster, one of the organizers of the fest, who noted that the casserole had been offered in the past but was not available at the 2022 event. Lunch will feature hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, and pulled pork
sandwiches. Sliced peaches with or without ice cream and whoopie pies will be on the dessert menu.
A baked goods table will include homemade peach pies, as well as a variety of other pies, cakes, brownies, cookies, a variety of flavors of whoopie pies, and other baked treats.
Organizers of the event have been accepting book donations, and a number of genres will be represented, including summer reading books. “We have some World War II hardcover historical books,” said MacMaster. “They’re stories of real events.” An area of free children’s books will be set up for young ones.
Church members have col-
lected yard sale items that can be purchased by donation at the fest, and a table of costume jewelry will be set up, along with a table of craft items made by members of the congregation.
Organizer Barbara Zook said that inside flea market vendors will include a jewelry maker and a table of sportsthemed items such as wastebaskets and pillows. According to Zook, several outside flea market spaces will be available for rent on a firstcome, first-served basis that morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. Individuals who have questions or are interested in reserving an inside vendor space may call Barb at 717-656-6322.
This year’s silent auction
will consist of at least 20 items, including themed baskets and gift certificates. Among the many theme baskets organizers expect will be a Thai basket, a Pepperidge Farm basket, and an Emma’s Popcorn basket.
Funds raised by the Peach Fest go to a number of causes, including the church’s Caring Fund and the general fund. A percentage will also be donated to Shiloh Youth Mission to further the work that Shiloh Presbyterian Church in Oxford is doing in the community.

The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Factory Ministries, 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. This training is designed to teach family members, teachers, school staff members, neighbors, health and human services workers, and others how to help someone ages 12 to 18 who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or crisis.
During this training, participants will learn how to identify common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges; and interact with a child or adolescent in crisis and connect him or her with help. They will also be introduced to expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care, and the impact of social media and bullying.

Services Administration (SAMHSA). The grant supports 100% of the project costs, budgeted for five years at $125,000 per year.
The grant provides mental health training for adults and youths through the Mental Health First Aid training, an evidence-based program that provides skills and resources necessary to recognize and address mental illness, improve pathways to services, and help to reduce the stigma around mental health.

In addition to holding standard worship services on Sundays, the church offers other activities such as regular group meetings. There are 30 different groups that meet at the church weekly; each focuses on recovery from different types of addictions and traumatic experiences.
“My challenge is to go beyond someone’s behavior and look at the trauma beneath it,” Reeves said.

He now travels to churches and ministries such as RTCM to train them in programs specific to recovering addicts and survivors of abuse. “The first step is always to address the trauma from which your pain came,” Reeves said. “It’s also important to build community relationships and to hold yourself accountable after your time in (RTCM).”
RTCM was founded by Jaime Santiago and his wife, Pam. The ministry offers a residential program for men and their families to receive
counseling and faith-based resources to overcome addictions. Participants of RTCM are also able to receive vocational training and to connect with local church communities as they transition out of the program

Penn State Extension will offer a “Twilight Pond Walk” workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the fishing pond at Masonic Village, Serpentine Road, Elizabethtown. This event is aimed at helping private pond owners and lake-based community organizations make informed management choices. Pond owners, residents of lake communities and local officials are especially invited to attend.
The workshop will feature speakers Kristen Koch and Jennifer Fetter, water resources educators with Penn
State Extension. Topics will be basic pond plant identification, how to conduct basic pond water quality tests, how land uses and runoff can affect ponds, basic pond ecology and pond water testing. Time will be allotted for discussion and interaction.
Space is limited, so preregistration is required. For more information and to register by Monday, Aug. 14, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ twilight-pond-walk. The fee includes a copy of the publication “Management of Fish Ponds in Pennsylvania.”

BEAUTIFUL HISTORIC LIMESTONE FARMHOUSE w/5-BR
THURSDAY, AUGUST 31 @ NOON LOCATED AT: 1398 Pleasantview Rd., Ephrata, PA 17522
DIRECTIONS: From Rt. 322 outside of Lincoln, turn NE on Hackman Rd. Go 1 mile to right turn on Spook Lane, to first buildings on the right.
HOUSE LISTING: An outstanding 102-acre beef/chicken/crop farm. Mostly square plotting, some of the best soil anywhere on the highly productive farm. Beautiful historic Limestone farmhouse dates back to 1764, has desirable 24’x13’ eat-in kitchen w/seating area; 23’x13’ living/ dining room; family room; storage room; ML laundry; mud room; 5 bedrooms; 1.5 bathrooms; beautiful stamped concrete patio; un-improved basement; oil furnace; updated windows; on-site septic.
ANIMAL BUILDINGS: Working chicken broiler house (Tyson contract) is 500’x44’ (max 29,000 birds) w/(2) 24-ton feed bins; 30-KW solar panels; steer barn has loafing area for 165-head beef; 20’x 60’ Harvestor silo (shelled corn unloader), (2) 18’x70’ concrete silos; 10’x55’ concrete solo; Rissler feed mixer; bunk feeder; 85-KW generator w/Cummins diesel engine serves the entire farm; (2) good water wells (tied together) w/UV lights.
STORAGE BUILDINGS: 88’x55’ steel equipment shed, 1 work bay has over-head door, concrete floor; older 60’x30 tobacco barn transformed into vehicle garage w/ finished lower level had small business w/office area. Clay Twp.; Ephrata S.D. This working farm is in Ag. Preserve and the Clean-Green program so taxes are only approx. $8,000.
AUCTIONEER NOTE: Truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the last original large working farms in the area. Approx. 95-acres are tillable. Fields are basically level but the rich limestone top-soil drains very well and grows tremendous crops. Provides diverse income for financial stability. Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.
OPEN HOUSE DATE: Saturday, Aug. 12, from 1-3 PM. Call/Text Auctioneer 717587-8906.
BRIEF TERMS: $300,000 down payment day of auction, balance in 75 days.
Attorney Tony Schimaneck 717-299-5251. Crops are reserved from the auction. Farm will be sold by the acre x 102.

Artists invited to submit postcards for exhibit
Create Columbia will present its third Invitational Postcard Art Exhibit. Artists from around the world are invited to mail their original art postcard for inclusion in the exhibit. Entries will be used as a fundraiser for Create Columbia.
Several guidelines have been created for submissions. A postcard-size artwork or two should be created using any medium, such as painting, collage, illustration, photography, or mixed media. Postcards must be sent via postal service (as a postcard) and should not be contained within an envelope. This year’s suggested theme is “It’s About Time.” Artists need not include a return address on their postcard art, but Create Columbia suggests that artists add their website address, as visitors to the exhibit may wish to see more of the artist’s creations.
Postcard art submissions should be mailed to CC Postcard Art 2023, P.O. Box 328, Columbia, PA 17512. The submission deadline is Thursday, Aug. 24.
The entries will be exhibited at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, from Saturday, Aug. 26, to Saturday, Sept. 2. The museum’s business hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
All displayed entries will available for bid via a silent auction throughout the exhibition period. The closing reception and announcement of winning bids will be held at the museum on Sept. 2, beginning at 2 p.m. Bidding will close promptly at 4 p.m.
Income derived from winning bids will go toward continuing operating costs of Create Columbia, a 501(c)(3) organization. No postcard art will be returned, and the artworks may be included in future fundraising efforts by Create Columbia.
