BY ANN MEAD ASH
Comingoff the successful celebration of the 90th New HollandFar mers Day Association Fair, president Paulene Redding and Kristie Overly, who handles exhibit premiums, began moving ahead for the 2023 event, which will be held Wednesday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 7.

Strengthening community ties
BY ANN MEAD ASH
At the most recent community collaboration meeting, New Holland Mayor Tim Bender made a statement praising police chief Bill Leighty and expressing confidence in the man who has been leading the force since 2017.
Leighty, a Manheim Township native, who also served with New Holland law enforcement early in his career, said that good community relations are essential to modern police work. “We need (good communication between police and the
community) more than ever,” said Leighty, who noted he serves residents from several generations, including boomers and millennials. “They all come from diverse backgrounds,” he added.
Leighty noted that when he was growing up, a sense of community and the “it takes a village to raise a child” concept was ever present in his neighborhood. “That was so valuable,” he said. “If you were playing with friends, all the parents looked out for all the children.” He sees the idea as the basis of community safety. “It was important for us

receive papers about the program shortly after the start of the school year. The ELANCO Released Time program uses a two-year sequential curriculum that begins with the establishment of God as Creator. The program establishes that humans are sinful and in need of a savior and that God provides a way to salvation through Jesus Christ. While both programs use the same overall curriculum, implementation may vary, but both generally include a Bible lesson, songs, prayer, listening time, and memorizing Bible verses.
Ball program will also earn points each week for verse memorization and other accomplishments. The highest-scoring boy and girl in each class will receive a reward chosen by the class mentor. “We do have an ice cream party for parents to meet their children’s mentors as well,” said Kirkpatrick.
New Holland Elementary School students who choose to take part will ride buses provided by local churches from the school to Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, each Thursday at 2:15 p.m. Students at Blue Ball Elementary School are walked to nearby Blue Ball Mennonite Church, 143 Ewell Road, East Earl. “We leave the church to pick up the children at 2:05 p.m.,” said Kevin Kirkpatrick, who oversees the Blue Ball program.
Students who take part in the New Holland program will be given the opportunity to earn points toward a week at Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata, Greenview Bible Camp in Denver, or Tel Hai Camp & Retreat in Honey Brook. At the end of the spring session, the names of two students from each grade will be chosen to win a camp scholarship. In addition, the two students with the highest number of points for the whole year will receive scholarships.

Both programs are in need of volunteers. Deb Reimers, who oversees the New Holland program, anticipates needing up to eight more adult volunteers for the more than 130 students who attend. Adults who would like to volunteer with the New Holland program may call 717-283-8921 or email drjr145@yahoo.com. New volunteer orientation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31. Individuals who would like to learn more about the program may find “ELANCO Released Time - New Holland Released Time” on Facebook.
The Blue Ball program will hold a meeting on Sept. 7 at 2 p.m., at the Blue Ball Mennonite Church to prepare volunteer mentors for the year ahead. “We will go over some of the particulars on how we operate as a ministry and to help the mentors develop tools to effectively minister to elementary-age children with many needs,” said Kirkpatrick. New Holland Fair
Spot Fire Rescue, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, on Sunday, Oct. 29. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. “We need people to come out and support that,” said Overly, who noted that bingo fundraisers are also planned for Sunday, March 31, and Sunday, June 30, in 2024.
The 2023 tug-of-war competition was opened up to members of church youth groups, sports teams, businesses, and more, and five teams took part, with Weaverland Valley Fire Company taking the top spot. This year, prize amounts have increased to $2,000 and a $500 gift card to Yoder’s Country Buffet, plus trophies for the firstplace winners; $1,000 plus trophies for second place; $750 plus trophies for third place; and $500 plus trophies for the fourth-place team. Each participating team that does not place will receive a consolation prize of $50. This year, the tug-of-war will be held across from the New Holland Farmers Day Association building on Franklin Street. Other venu changes include the flower exhibi-
tion, which will be held in the CrossNet Youth Center on Franklin Street, and the entertainment stage, which will move to Towne Centre Green. On Franklin Street between Roberts Avenue and Railroad Avenue, organizers are planning to hold a farmers market during the hours that the fair is open.
“We want to fill that up that area to bring the farm back to the farm show,” said Redding, who noted that local vendors wishing to sell produce are being sought.
Volunteers are always needed for the fair. “Case New Holland sponsored volunteer shirts, so each volunteer will receive a commemorative shirt,” said Redding, who noted that volunteers who give two hours may attend the fair banquet and those who work four hours may bring a guest along.
Improvements to the fair building include new flooring and new window treatments in the office. Currently, the fair board is working to raise funds to add an elevator. The organization needs to raise $8,000 more to receive a grant of $25,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. “The grant is specifically for fairs for capital improvements,” noted Overly.
To donate, volunteer, or compete, visit the website at www.newhollandfair.org. Those wishing to take part in the coloring contest may download and print pages there as well. Readers with specific questions may email info@newhollandfair.org or call 717-354-5880.
Virtual workshop will teach tree pruning
Penn State Extension will offer a virtual workshop on how to correctly prune trees.
“Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m.
Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.
During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the
tree structure. There will also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of decay on wound closure after pruning.
The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well as others interested in urban and community forestry.
The webinar is free, but a fee may be associated with the following credits: Society of American Foresters (CFE),

… as a police agency, to get involved with the community to develop that trust and solidify that relationship,” he said, noting that improving community safety and deterring and solving crimes are all tied to that relationship.
Working to improve relations involves partnering with local organizations such as CrossNet Ministries and Garden Spot Fire Rescue and organizing events like National Night Out, which was held in the community park on Jackson Street on Aug. 1. “We interact and engage well with other agencies in the community,” said Leighty.
Following high school, Leighty studied business administration in college before working as a purchasing manager for a local company. He helped the company to keep employee relations strong during the recession of the early 1980s by working a deal with a local garage for employees to fill their car gas
tanks during early morning hours. By the mid-1980s, Leighty had decided to revisit his interest in law enforcement, and he went to work at the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. He later served as chief of the Clay Township force, which became the Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department.
“I have been in the county in law enforcement for 34 years,” said Leighty.
Coming back to New Holland as chief, Leighty recognized the special culture of the area. “New Holland is unique because (residents) really strive to emphasize community relationship, and they rally in support of the police department,” stated Leighty. “That was key for me.” Leighty seeks to build on that attitude. “In today’s culture, community is so important because it relies upon trust, helping others, and working together,” he said.
Leighty said that the department has received a federal grant to move forward for accreditation. “That will allow us to be more professional and hold us to a higher level of accountability to the community,” said Leighty. “There are outside organiza-

“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of development and communications for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key
to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”
With three locations in Lancaster and one in Lebanon County, COBYS approaches its mission through adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.
“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can

According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were
in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.

of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that
we continue to look to meet.”
COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.
“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide trauma-focused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”
COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.
“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”

make a donation when applying for or renewing their driver’s license, photo ID, or motor vehicle registration. Additionally, the VTF receives proceeds from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates and private donations. Since the grant program began in 2013, a total of more than $6.6 million has been awarded to organizations that serve Pennsylvania veterans.
Grantees slated to receive funding identified over $2 million in matching funds pledged toward grant-funded initiatives. Combined with the VTF grants, the fundraising efforts will result in more than $2.8 million for veterans’ initiatives in Pennsylvania over the next two years.
A total of $150,000 in grant funding was available for new, innovative, or
expanded programs or services provided by county directors of Veterans Affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The three areas of emphasis for grantees in this category were veterans’ outreach, transportation services, and homelessness.
Among the grantees was the Chester County Office of Veterans Affairs, which receive $15,000 to provide outreach and awareness services to veterans.
The VTF grant also identified $650,000 in funding available to veteran service organizations with 501(c)(19) status and nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organizations with a mission of serving Pennsylvania veterans. Funding priorities for grants in this category were transportation services, behavioral
health initiatives, homelessness, and employment and education.
The grantees include Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga, receiving $40,000 to provide interactive equine therapy to veterans; the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg, $40,000 to support the Military Share program; Good Karma Garage in Harrisburg, $39,100 to provide reduced vehicle repair costs and services to veterans; Guitars for Vets, Chapter 90, in Lancaster, $4,950 to provide therapeutic services to veterans; and rabbitCARES in York, $35,000 for transportation services to veterans.
All grant awards are contingent upon the completion of a fully executed grant agreement.

Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.
OPEN HOUSE: Call/Text Auctioneer 717-587-8906.
BRIEF TERMS: $300,000 down payment day of auction, balance in 75 days. Attorney Tony Schimaneck 717-299-5251. Crops are reserved from the auction. Farm will be sold by the acre x 102. Please visit our website www.martinandrutt.com
