BY ANN MEAD ASH Lori Bennett, a member of the board of the New Holland ReUzit Shop, shared that one of the main requirements the organization is looking for in new board members is a “Christian heart focused on wanting to serve.” Bennett knows that such people are present in the local area. “This community has so many wonderful people who have a passion for serving and have some really neat gifts the board can use,” she said. The current board of six has made it a mission to expand membership to nine or more. “We want to reach out … beyond our circles and find some people who have the potential to be really good board members,” BennettAmongsaid.the qualities the organization would like to see in potential board members are familiarity with areas of property management, real estate, and construction; human resources, as about half of the staff of 18 is full time; accounting and finance; and legal issues. Bennett noted that skills in those areas could help the organization move forward with plans for the future. “We are looking to do some exciting things,” said Bennett. Currently, the board meets every other month, normally in the evening, but individual committees often get together in between those meetings. “It’s not a huge time commitment, but (a minimum amount of) time will be necessary,” Bennett noted. The New Holland Re-Uzit Shop has been a fixture in the area for decades, having opened in 1976. Originally, the shop was located near the intersection of Main Street and Railroad Avenue, but 12 years ago, it was moved to the former Good’s Furniture location at 707 W. Main St. “August 2 was our 46th anniversary,” said Sherry Duda, who shares general manager duties with Andy Clayton.

BY ANN MEAD ASH As the new theater director for Ephrata High School (EHS), Reji Woods has a goal to give students a better theater experience than he had growing up in Gainesville, Fla. “I want to make sure students aren’t lacking in things (they could be introduced to),” said Woods, who took over the position in June. Woods hopes to expand how the program is offered. “Instead of just shows in the fall and spring, there will be a drama club and I will be the adviser,” noted Woods, who wants to register the group in national acting societies. “So there’s (theater) community year round,” he explained. One way he hopes to expand the theater program is to bring in other theater professionals, including writers, to provide a week of summer workshops. “It would culminate in a showcase at the end of the camp,” saidFirstWoods.introduced to EHS theater by former director Irving Gonzales, Woods came on board when he was asked to be a guest artist as the voice of the plant in a production of See Reji Woods pg 8 Re-Uzit

before they are partnered with an individual for whom they may open and close doors, retrieve objects, and more. UDS program trainers Janna Barley and Lorrie Snyder work together to match dogs with clients and help the canines learn the specific skills for that role. In addition to full-service dogs, UDS trains companion dogs that work with clients at home. Breece explained that these dogs do not wear a vest or have the same public access rights as service dogs, but they make significant contributions to an individual’s independence. Barley pointed out that Oliver is a service dog that was placed in the home of a woman with mobility issues. “Oliver can open a sliding glass door for her and close it again, and he can fetch anything she has dropped,” she explained. The need for facility dogs has “exploded” since 2016, according to Breece. Secondary trainer Susan Vollmar works with puppy trainer and breeder Kristy Conrad to place facility dogs, mostly in schools. “For our last fiscal year, we added 18 schools to our waiting list,” said Breece. “(Facility dogs) have a lot of the same training (as service dogs),” she said. Vollmar noted that dogs work with handlers from the facility, who receive training at UDS and at the school. She noted that dogs can mediate a student crisis, often helping to de-escalate a student who might otherwise have to be sent home. Facility dogs also serve as nonjudgmental “read” dogs, helping students who struggle with reading to practice and gain confidence.

Breece explained that UDS trains Labradors because the dogs learn quickly and will change allegiance easily. The organization is always seeking funding for the care and training of puppies. “We are bringing in 14 to 18 new puppies each year, and our current waiting list for facility dogs working in Lancaster and York counties has reached 20 as well as our having a healthy waiting list for mobility service dogs,” she explained, noting that puppies may be sponsored by businesses, employees of businesses, churches, or other groups. More information about the services the organization provides may be found at www.udservices.org. Boltz began coaching at Annville Elementary School in the spring of 2017. She was soon working to start a team at Lebanon Catholic - a kindergarten through 12thgrade private school that she had attended. Her success inspired her to start a Heart and Sole program at Lebanon Catholic for middleschoolers in the spring of 2018. When a team could not be raised, Boltz coached at Lebanon Middle School, where she connected with Laurie Funk, now a board member with GOTR Lancaster and Lebanon. In the fall of 2018, Boltz returned to GOTR at Lebanon Catholic, where she continued to coach until the spring of 2019, when she decided to transport girls who were interested in taking part in Heart and Sole to the Lebanon YMCA. “That’s when Laurie and I realized the power of connecting girls from different schools,” said Boltz. In the spring of 2020, a community team was born. Then, the COVID-19 shutdown occurred. Coaches reached out with activity packages to girls who had signed up from all over Lebanon County. Boltz noted that the YMCA has supported the program, but a lack of coaches has caused the GOTR program to struggle recently. Boltz was nominated by fellow coaches who mentioned her positive attitude and vision as well as her ability to connect with each girl and celebrate her individual achievements. When 2021 Shining Light winner Cara Scudner announced Boltz as the award winner at the May 25 banquet, she said, “(Boltz’s) infectious enthusiasm, strength, and leadership skills brought girls from different schools together into one team with a strongEachbond.”Shining Light Award winner receives a bracelet and $500 to donate. Boltz chose to give to the Tour de Lebanon Valley bike ride, which raises funds for the Community Health Council of Lebanon County; the Lebanon Valley Conservancy; the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition; the Lebanon Valley Mountain Bike Team, which is an interscholastic cycling team for young students; and the Lebanon Bicycle Recycle, which provides bikes for children in Lebanon. The GOTR fall season will be held from Monday, Sept. 12, through Monday, Nov. 21, with the GOTR 5K presented by OAL scheduled to be held at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 19. The 5K, which is open to the public, will begin at 8:30 a.m. GOTR is especially in need of volunteer coaches to help make the season possible for girls at each participating school. After 10 seasons of coaching Girls on the Run (GOTR) and Heart and Sole programs with Lancaster-Lebanon GOTR, Gayle Boltz, winner of the 2022 Shining Light Award, knows exactly what is most rewarding about volunteering, but she cannot talk about it without becoming emotional. “It’s when you see the girls just come to life (as a team),” explained Boltz, who said the transformation usually happens midseason after the girls complete their first practice 5K. “That’s what I call the magic … when they feel that strength within them.”

According to Terry, most of the attendees are Vietnam War veterans. “We had three or four World War II vets who have passed away,” he noted, adding that some Korean War veterans have attended and that he is starting to see veterans from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We had reservations for 72,” he said at the July 16 meeting. “But we get from 90 to 120, so we set up for 90 “Wetoday.”always have the POW table set up and nobody sits there,” said Terry of the traditional table set with a white tablecloth, a single candle, an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a vase.

Currently, Terry said, two benefactors are covering breakfast for the veterans, but he noted that sponsorships are welcome.

Several years ago, Navy veteran Bill Terry wore his Navy cap to a rally in Gettysburg. Someone took note of his service and asked if he went to the monthly veterans breakfast in Gettysburg. “I had never heard of it or been there,” said Terry. Not long after that conversation, Terry made the hourand-45-minute trip to Gettysburg to attend a breakfast. “(The veterans) had been meeting 12 to 15 years,” reported Terry. “I thought, ‘We don’t have anything like this in TerryLancaster.’”decided to start a group locally, so he drove from Gettysburg to the Lyndon Diner in Lancaster. “I told (representatives of the Lyndon Diner) what I wanted to do, and they offered the back room,” said Terry, who noted that at first attendees ordered off the menu. “For the first meeting, 23 showed up,” said Terry, who added that three of those still attend. The Vets Breakfast Club now meets on the third Saturday of each month at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant and Smorgasbord, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird in Hand. Due to a conflict, the meeting on Saturday, Sept. 17, will be held at Westlake Village, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The breakfasts are free for veterans and spouses. Attendees begin arriving at 7 a.m. Those who wish to reserve a space at any of the breakfasts may call 717-9290310. Individuals with questions may call Terry at 717435-6095.Terrygenerally says a few words at the breakfast, which opens with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. Presidents of chapters of military organizations, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who attend may get up and speak, and sometimes a speaker is scheduled. When a group of veterans who traveled to Vietnam returned, Terry asked them to share about their experience at the breakfast.

According to Cliff Sweigart with the Weaver Insurance Group of Elizabethtown, located in Mount Joy, the Westfield Insurance Foundation’s Legacy of Caring Fund is available to a select number of insurance agents. These agents are given the opportunity to nominate a nonprofit organization to receive a donation.Sweigart is friends with John Wagner, a member of the board of The Potter’s House, a nonprofit organization that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and postrelease prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. Knowing the organization’s focus, Sweigart nominated it to receive support from the Legacy of CaringInFund.July, Sweigart presented a check for $6,500 to Lanny Millette, director of donor relations with The Potter’s House. “I was happy to nominate (The Potter’s House),” said“WeSweigart.sureappreciate it,” replied Millette, who noted that the funds will be used to help build up the program aspects that help men and women to be self-sufficient citizens again. “We are working on both curriculum and staffing,” reported Millette. “We are seeing positive improvements in student outcomes.”ThePotter’s House was started in Leola by executive director Lloyd Hoover. The tagline “From Captivity to Destiny” has long encapsulated the mission of The Potter’s House. What began with one house in Leola has expanded to include a house in New Holland and Still Waters Recovery Center in Brownstown. At Still Waters, Joel Jakubowski, men’s program director, oversees an intensive phase one program to address the roots of issues and provide a before the men move into phase two and full-time employment.According to Millette, addiction has been tied to an interruption of the natural maturation process, which can cause an individual to experience arrested growth and development. To remedy this, the program works to teach life skills, including financial management and how to negotiate interpersonal relationships. Once a student is employed, he or she can build income and satisfy debt and restitution. Because addiction impacts families in emotional, mental, social, and economic areas, The Potter’s House curriculum includes a program that incorporates family understanding in the recoveryMilletteprocess.notedthat the pandemic has impacted the addiction situation in Lancaster County significantly, and he cited job loss and isolation as factors. He added that the correlation between substance abuse and incarceration is substantial. In addition to The Potter’s House campuses, the organization offers The House of Ruth, a ministry to women facing addiction issues. “Little Shop of Horrors.” “(Gonzales) used it as a tool for me to talk to the kids about professional theater,” recalled Woods. “To teach (students) how a professional actor prepares.” Gonzales then asked Woods to be assistant director for the 2021-22 school year, later letting him know that he intended to retire in the spring of 2022 and encouraging Woods to apply. “I was at a crossroads,” said Woods, who had been balancing a career of acting with teaching his own students. “I wanted to (teach) on a more structured level and to get to see kids progress from freshman year to graduation. (The opportunity) set my heart into Professionalmotion.”acting was not Woods’ original career goal. “I went to school at first as a political science and economics double major,” said Woods, who served as a congressional intern and had a job offer at a political consulting firm on the table, when he realized it was not his dream. “My heart was in theater,” recalled Woods, who consulted with his mother on how to move forward. With her support, he attended University of Central Florida Conservatory Theater; in his senior year, he auditioned at the United Professional Theater Auditions in Memphis, Tenn. He was offered a part in the 16-person “Psalms of David” revue playing at Living Waters, then part of Sight & Sound in Lancaster. When Woods finished that contract in 2006, he headed to New York City. He worked out of New York, traveling around the country and eventually around the world until 2010, when he returned to Sight & Sound. He was asked to stay to be part of “Voices of Christmas,” playing a character created for him. In 2013, he was ready to leave when he was offered a part in “Noah.” At that point, he was dating Lancaster County resident Audra Martin. He stayed for “Noah,” and he and Audra were married that year. Woods’ Lancaster County career also includes a solo cabaret at the Ware Center and “Portrait of a Lady,” a show honoring women, at The Trust in 2015. From 2016 to 2017, he served as artistic director at Cavod Academy, and he works with the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship competition. Nationally, he has been seen in television shows, and he was part of a group that appeared on “America’s Got Talent” in 2021. A daytime course will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 14, from 9 to 11 a.m. The certification exam will be on Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required by Friday, Sept. 30. These in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving the food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. After completing the course and passing the multiple choice exam with a score of 75% or higher, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years. As in-person activities resume, Penn State Extension will follow applicable state and local restrictions and Penn State COVID-19 guidelines in effect at the time of an event regarding masking, social distancing, and facility capacity limits. Penn State will continue to require individuals to wear masks inside university buildings at all times. The course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the “ServSafe Manager” book, exam, answer sheet, and learning materials.
