HVMI To Hold Golf Outing By Ann Mead Ash

Kyle Robinson, executive director of Handi*Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), has a lot on his plate. Not too long ago, the ministry purchased the land at 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, and work to receive approvals to locate camps, retreat centers, and day programs there is underway, with HVMI planning a capital fund campaign to begin in the fall. With all that looming, Robinson is well aware of the importance of maintaining the general budget. “Our golf outing is driving programs that are happening now,” explained Robinson. “Our general fund should be strong as we go into our capital campaign. We need to appropriately handle all the things God has given us.” See Golf Outing pg 16

Mark. “We bring together 300 to 400 survivors in a space where it’s expected they will talk with others about what happened to them,” said Mark, who added that many families attend the walk together. “There will be people hugging and crying,” said Mark. “It helps everyone get to tomorrow.” Individuals who wish to participate in the walk may register at the organization’s website. There is a registration fee to take part. The fee for students ages 6 to 18 will be discounted, and children age 5 and under may participate for free.

In response, the family founded the nonprofit DES Foundation and coordinates the annual Walk for D.E.S., which raises funds to promote suicide prevention and awareness and to aid families who have lost loved ones to suicide. Funds may help pay for counseling in addition to funeral costs. “It depends on the need,” said Mark. This year’s Walk for D.E.S. will include a 5K walk and run with color at Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, Sept. 14. Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m., a brief service will be held. “We read a poem and play a song or two … at a tree we planted there in the … park,” said Mark. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. along a flat route that travels into a wooded area. “It intertwines like a figure eight. It’s an easy walk,” said Mark, who added that the run with color will occur at the beginning. According to Mark, the first two walks helped provide funding for the Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, which has created awareness cards that list warning signs of a potential suicide on one side and give prevention instructions on the other side. “Too many people see the warning signs and don’t know what to do,” said Mark. “(A person will say), ‘You aren’t going to do anything stupid, are

To be eligible for grants, rescue organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with no paid staff. In addition to helping rescues, Leo’s has a pet food and supply bank that accepts food, treats, blankets, towels, and anything else a rescue could use. Leo’s is named after a now-11-year-old corgi

“It’s a dog festival, (but) humans are (allowed) to attend,” said Joanne Pursel, who chairs Paws in the Park along with Sandy Jones. “It’s a fun time for everybody.” Paws in the Park, which raises funds for Leo’s Helping Paws, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registered dogs of all breeds and sizes will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of contests. Organizers hope to

hold the popular canine costume contest, which has brought dogs to the event in costumes both homemade and storebought. Other games and contests organizers hope to hold will include musical hoops, a dog treat relay, a shell game, a tennis ball retrieval competition, and dog limbo. Paw painting will be available for an additional fee. The Lancaster City Police K-9 Unit is expected to return for a demonstration during the event, and at least 12 rescue groups will be in attendance with dogs for people to meet and consider for adoption at a later time. In addition, a vendor fair will be held. The vendor fair will feature a pet photographer, several vet offices, dog day care and boarding facilities, and on-site nail trims for a cost. One vendor will sell clothing for dogs, and another will sell dog treats. A silent auction will feature up to 25 items, including gift cards and gift baskets.

“I am a model railroader,” said Bill Cole proudly. “I love trains all the time.” A man who first fell in love with trains when he received one for Christmas at the age of 5 growing up in Minnesota could not resist visiting a railroad museum after moving to Lancaster. But making just the occasional visit to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, became a thing of the past when Cole retired. Instead, after picking up a volunteer brochure around 2012, Cole signed on to work in the museum archives. One day a week, he scans and catalogs photo collections and helps prepare documents and photos for sale. Cole appreciates the importance of this work. “Up in the archives, we can preserve what we’re working with for future generations,” he said, noting that it will be important to keep up with technical advancements. “Right now, we are putting it on a hard drive, but we will have to keep moving it,” he said. In addition to recognizing the significance of the work, Cole enjoys the benefits as only a model railroader can. “The archives gave me a chance to see pictures of real trains in their environments, and I can translate that into miniature,” said Cole. “Model railroaders are out there looking at the real world to

The first train he received was a Lionel Hudson 464 steam engine. “It was a big heavy thing,” recalled Cole. “It had a whistle, and it was originally for the Christmas tree, but I built a layout.” Because Cole is also a woodworker, he soon traded the train for a jigsaw. “That was the end of my Lionel train, but I got into HO size,” said Cole, who took over his father’s photo studio in the family basement for his first layout. HO did not hold Cole’s interest continually, however. “Fifteen years ago, the O-gauge trains were starting to get very sophisticated,” said Cole. “They had sound systems with realistic sounds,” he added, describing the chugging sounds and the noises of the compressors and the trains letting off steam. “They even had station announcements.” But O-gauge was eventually outdone again. “They started to miniaturize electronics and put them in HO, and I got back into that again,” said Cole with a chuckle. Cole was formally recognized as the museum’s Volunteer of the Year at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission ceremony in Harrisburg on April 27. He will be honored again at the Railroad Museum’s annual Members’ Day banquet in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 28.

convert it to miniature.” Cole’s second day per week at the museum is devoted to the Pennsylvania Landscapes layout. “This layout is 18 years in the making,” explained Cole. The model layout offers a variety of scenes associated with the Pennsylvania landscape. “If you were traveling back in 1950 throughout Pennsylvania, these are the scenes you would see,” said Cole, who pointed out cities, railyards where trains that hauled were built, and a big city station that includes a window to the locations and happenings located underground. The layout also includes farmlands, rolling hills, mountains, and a mining town. “Here are the companyowned homes,” said Cole pointing to the row of similar houses. The layout has been a labor of love for Cole. “It was almost completed when I started volunteering here,” he said, noting that the trains on the layout were stopping unexpectedly and refusing to move. “I spent time rewiring the whole thing to reduce the complexity so it would run smoothly,” he said, adding that the layout is more detailed than others at the museum. “(The layout) doesn’t run unless (a volunteer) is here to run it because it is a little more complicated,” he said. “You can’t just turn it on and leave it.” Fortunately for both Cole and the museum, the digital command control system for the layout is the same one Cole uses for the layout in his home basement in Lancaster. Cole noted that he has created layouts using a number of different train models and gauges over his years in model railroading.

Prayer Walk Passes Through Lancaster By Ann Mead Ash

John Halvorsen, a pastor from Duluth, Minn., recent completed Prayer Walk America, which took him from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, Calif., to Manhattan, N.Y., in 38 weeks. “We started Oct. 31, 2018,” said John, who averaged 16 miles a day. He arrived in Times Square on July 31. Along the way, he and his wife, Sandy, who followed along on John’s

walk in a motorhome, stopped in Lancaster for dinner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township. This walk, the most recent of several John has completed, was titled “Prayer Walk America - An Appeal to Heaven.” “This is … an appeal to people to start praying,” said John between bites as he enjoyed his potluck dinner at the church. “The response has been so positive.” John said that Sandy, who generally travels 2 to 3 miles ahead of him while he is walking, has asked

John (left) and Sandy Halvorsen displayed the flag they carried when they visited St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township in July. the walk when he arrived in Gulfport, Miss., on Jan. 4, 1999. His journey was chronicled by a country music radio station that asked him to call in weekly with updates. Billy Graham’s organization interviewed John four times, and he was also interviewed by Bill Bright. John said God’s message for listeners was that tumultuous times were coming, and it was important to pray. “This was before 9/11,” noted John. In April of 1999, John and Sandy traveled to the West Coast to begin his first cross-country walk. “We started in a fishing village in Oregon,” recalled John, who said that the walk ended in Rehoboth Beach, Del., in November of 1999. “Again, we had favor with the press,” said John. In 2008, John felt the Lord calling him to walk from Portugal to China. He began in Cabo da Roca, Portugal, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and walked 6,020 miles to Almaty, Kazakhstan, near China, while praying blessings on the countries he passed through. During the recent trip, John carried a special flag bearing the image of a pine tree and the words “An Appeal to Heaven.” The flag is a replica of one that George Washington used during the Revolutionary War. “They knew at the time that unless an appeal to heaven was made, the Revolutionary War would not be won,” said Sandy. “John felt he should carry this flag, as we are making an appeal to heaven for awakening for this nation. We need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need the Lord,” she said. Readers who wish to learn more about the Halvorsens’ mission may visit www.prayerwalkamerica.com.

people along the route how the couple can pray for them. “People start crying, pouring out their hearts, asking for prayer,” said John, who recalled several talks with farmers in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. “We walked through fields that were muddy, and they couldn’t get the tractors in to plant or the seed was rotting,” he said, adding that one of the farmers told him, “I think God is trying to get our attention.” John received his first call to embark on a prayer walk while he and Sandy were serving as missionaries in Ireland working with Harvest Network International. “I suddenly received a burden for the United States,” said John, who was in Ireland with Sandy from 1991 to 1998. “After a year of trying to discern what the Lord was saying, we turned the reins over to another couple and moved back to the United States.” Back in Minnesota, John began doing pastoral work. “I would go to the Mall of America to pray daily, and I would walk around the mall, so people called me the pastor of the Mall of America.” John said that in 1998, God gave him a vision of walking across America, along with a verse. “Genesis 13:17 came to me,” said John. “‘Get up and walk the length and the breadth of the land.’” John began to ask God what the cause would be for the action. “I felt the Lord was saying, ‘There are tumultuous times coming to America, and I am going to grant you unusual favor with the press.’” On Sept. 21, 1998, John began walking from the Canadian border in Minnesota, and he ended

HVMI will hold its 17th annual golf outing at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville, on Thursday, Sept. 12. Contests will include a hole-in-one competition, closest to the pin, longest drive for men and women, straightest drive, and a putting competition. Registration and light fare will be at 11:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Dinner will follow the round. HVMI offers recreational camps and more to people with disabilities and also includes Minds Renewed, BASIS, and REST Ministries. Plans for the land include a camp featuring a chapel/dining hall, a cabin, a pavilion, and more. Recreational

features that HVMI hopes to add will include a pool, a playground, a basketball court, and playing fields with ADA-compliant paved walking paths. Currently, the ministry rents two camps to offer seven weeks of camping per summer. One camp is located in Malaga, N.J., and a second is at Camp Sankanac near Pottstown. Having its own property will mean that HVMI can hold 10 weeks of camp each summer. “Our goals are to centralize (camping) at the Akron property,” said Robinson, who added that workshops to help local individuals and churches learn the best ways to welcome people with disabilities into their

organizations are also planned for the location. Robinson would also like to see the location offer retreat opportunities to bereaved parents who take part in BASIS and parents of children with disabilities, who could receive respite services. According to Robinson, the work required to obtain land development approval for the site is well underway. “We are moving forward with the review process,” said Robinson. “It would be great to break ground this year,” he noted, adding that the process will begin with moving earth around. “A lot of things need to

happen on the land,” he said. “Once we have the approval, things can move fast.” The capital campaign that will be necessary to fund the new location is forthcoming as well. “ We want to know the exact costs (before launching the campaign),” explained Robinson. “Hopefully by the end of summer, (we will launch).” Individuals interested in taking part in the golf outing are encouraged to preregister by Thursday, Sept. 5. Readers may register at www.hvmi.org. Questions may be directed to swilson@hvmi.org or 717-859-4777.

Owners, supervisors or managers designated by the business should complete related training. These people will be responsible to train employees on what to look for and how to safeguard against moving SLF. The PDA encourages everyone, even those who do not need a permit, to take advantage of the training. Training classes are being

offered free of charge. The classes will consist of a pre-recorded training session followed by a 20-question exam. A score of 70% is required to pass and to receive a permit. Registration is required. To register or for more information, readers may contact the PDA at 717-787-5674 or SLFPermit@pa.gov.

Lanternfly Training Set The spotted lanternfly (SLF), an invasive plant-hopper, was discovered in Berks County in 2014. This insect has the potential to greatly impact the stone fruit, grape, hops and logging industries. Damage to blueberries, basil, cucumbers and horseradish has also been observed. In 2018, an SLF order of

quarantine and treatment was established by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA). All residents and businesses must comply with the regulations. An SLF permit is required for businesses working within the quarantine that move products, vehicles or other conveyances within or out of the quarantine.

Hospice & Community Care staff members (from left) Devon Fiore, special events coordinator; Coco Minardi, donor relations manager; and Allie Bucher, communications manager, display a tiny sample of the items that will be sold at the 35th annual Labor Day Auction in Quarryville on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets. To donate items for the auction, readers may contact special events coordinator Devon Fiore at 717-391-2434 or dfiore@hospicecommunity.org. For more information about the event, folks may visit www.LaborDayAuction.org.

PUBLIC AUCTION

SALE FOR: THOMAS & KRISTEN LEAMAN

R044880

As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “ We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercialgrade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St.,

Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their allyou-can-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon

bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for preventative services and needed medical care. The food bank says that more than 15 percent of Americans eligible for SNAP currently do not receive this benefit, and seniors are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and barriers to SNAP access. Among seniors, 58% of eligible individuals are not enrolled in SNAP.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s team of SNAP experts provides assistance and helps individuals determine their eligibility for SNAP benefits. Team members are available to assist in the application process through the bilingual Food Stamps Helpline at 877-999-5964. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s programs that reach more than 136,000 individuals each month include ElderShare, MilitaryShare, Fresh Express, BackPack, Kids Café, Summer Pantries and Summer Feeding.

Last year, the food bank provided nearly 45 million meals and distributed more than 11 million pounds of produce from its locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport. Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania in Lancaster was among the franchise office winners in the 2019 Paul Davis CAN Charity Drive. Paul Davis Restoration Inc. staff members at the company’s Jacksonville, Fla., headquarters and franchise offices across the U.S. and Canada participated in the fundraising initiative to collect cans of food for people and pets. During June, employees at participating offices collected cans of food and made structures using the cans. On July 1, participants posted photos of their structures on Paul Davis’ Facebook page, and voting via “likes” on the posts began on July 5. On Aug. 1, the winning structures were announced

for prizes and office parties. Winners were recognized for the greatest number of cans collected, the best images, and the greatest number of staff members participating. Each office donated its collected food to a local charity. Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania, which has the franchise code LLCO, was recognized in the contest. “LLCO Animal House” won an office party for collecting and donating the most food, with 1,188 cans. The office donated its collected cans to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that meets the needs of families and animals in the community through the operation of a pet food bank,

low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination programs, and support of animal rescue through an adoption program. For more information about the Pet Pantry, readers may visit http://petpantrylc.org. Nationwide, Paul Davis collected more than 3,100 cans of food. Members of the public can view all Paul Davis can structures submitted to the fundraising campaign at https://bit.ly/2YU3y9H.
