GSHS marchers to stage “The Boy Band Show”
BY ANN MEAD ASHGarden Spot High School (GSHS) marching band drum major Brooke Gockley admits that the boy band music included in this year’s show is ear candy. “The music is always stuck in my head,” she said.
Fellow drum major Maddy Gehr agreed. “It’s fun to listen to,” she added.
Gockley and Gehr hope the infectious tunes will inspire audience members to respond to “The Boy Band Show,” which they will present during football game halftimes this fall. “With the band (doing) dance (steps) this year, I hope the audience will interact,” said Gockley. Band director Katie Beasley called the dance steps “jam-out sessions.” Beasley’s assistant director is Colton Henry, and the percussion
director is Chad Whenry. Specific songs that will be part of the show are, in order of play, “Drag Me Down” by One Direction, “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers, “I
Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys, and “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC. To learn the drill, the 76 band members met at the school for band camp from July 29 to Aug. 4,
Music in the air
BY ANN MEAD ASHThere is something about outdoor music that livens up the atmosphere. The organizers of the annual Fiddler’s Picnic know this, and each year they endeavor to bring the sounds of fiddles, banjos, bass, and more to New Holland.
As is tradition, this year’s picnic will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, which is located in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland. Live music will begin at 10 a.m. Musicians are See NHSAP pg 4

Henry said the music was chosen by school music department staff members with the goal of finding

NHELC plans International Celebration
BY ANN MEAD ASHFor several years, the New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) held an International Meal, but for 2023, NHELC development director Raquel Vera is planning a feast for visitors’ eyes, ears, and noses, with a side of cultural immersion. This year, NHELC will hold its first International Celebration, and the event will include a variety of food items, dance, traditional garb, crafts, and more from a number of other countries.
The celebration, which Vera has
called a “cultural explosion,” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Vera is working with El Condado, which is providing a variety of appetizers. Food that Vera has lined up for the event includes tacos al pastor; chicharrones, which are sausages; chicken kabobs; chicken satay; tandoori wing; street corn; spanokopita; loukomades; smoked hummus; and falafel.
“We will have dances,” said Vera, who noted that dances representing See NHELC pg 5

encouraged to arrive early to reserve a slot on the park stage.
Sue Noll, secretary/treasurer of the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP), said that a new feature for 2023 will be fiddle and banjo contests. The banjo contest will be held at noon, and the fiddle competition will be held at 2 p.m. “I came up with this idea (for the contests) off the top of my head,” said picnic organizer Ron McVey, who will judge the fiddle contest. “I thought we would try it and see what happens.” The banjo contest will be judged by Keith Kupp. McVey hopes the competitions will draw more musicians and attendees to the event. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third places for both contests. Those wishing to compete may sign up at the event.
In addition to string players, individuals who play the accordion, harmonica, or keyboard may visit the park to join in on well-known favorites such as “Rocky Top,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Golden Slippers.” Country and bluegrass tunes are staples of the musical program.
The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which
brings its food trailer and offers items for purchase. Traditionally, club members serve the hot ham sandwiches for which the Lions are known in the area, along with barbecued chicken, chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sides, and beverages. NiCE SiZE FRiES and Schaatz Ice Cream will be on-site, as well.
NHSAP, which organizes a number of concerts in the park each summer, is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. “We are still in need of volunteers in a big way,” said Noll, who noted that help is especially needed with setting up prior to concerts and clearing the park afterward. Volunteers to accept freewill offerings for NHSAP during intermissions are also needed.
No admission is charged for NHSAP events, but freewill offerings are received. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. To learn more about NHSAP, visit www.newhollandsummer arts.com or search for “New Holland Summer Arts Association” on Facebook. Vintage cars on parade
BY ANN MEAD ASHOn the afternoon of July 22, the weather smiled on Fairmount, a retirement community comprising two campuses perched on the high ground where Cat’s Back Road traverses between Farmersville and Hinkletown. About 25 classic
and vintage vehicles parked near the entrance at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. More than 30 residents crowded under the portico of the front door waiting for a parade of vehicles, while others strolled the parking lot taking in the sights, which ranged from a Chevrolet Fleetwood
from the 1940s to a latermodel Mustang.
The cars were brought to the venue by members of the Axle Snappers Inc. Car Club, a group of nearly 20 car enthusiasts who meet monthly. The car show was first suggested by Fairmount resident Abe Witmer, a one-time Studebaker
owner, who mentioned the idea to Colleen Hurst, one of Fairmount’s activity coordinators. Colleen quickly turned to her father, car club member Wilmer Hurst, who helped her to organize the show, which began at 1 p.m. At a little after 2 p.m., the cars began to move
music has really affected the drill, stating that the band members will begin by forming the shape of a star. Gehr agreed that the drill features creative, exciting, and fun shapes, such as a conveyor belt figure where four groups of students form circles. “It really pushes the band’s limits,” said Gockley. “It’s really unique.” Other standout moments will include a rifleline feature in “Sucker” and the color guard members using swing flags. Emma Kauffman will perform a trumpet solo on “Drag Me Down.”
To boost morale, band leadership held costume theme nights, which included Time Travel Tuesday, Whimsical Wednesday, and section day on Thursday. Gockley and Gehr noted that the “whimsical” Wednesday theme inspired students to dress as fairies and Disney characters and throw glitter around. “There were lots of interpretations (of that theme),” stated Gockley.
In addition to halftime shows, the band will perform at the Barnstormers’ stadium on Sunday, Aug. 27, as part of the Barnstormers’ School Spirit program. The group will also take part in exhibitions at Lancaster Catholic High School and Ephrata High School as part of the Lancaster County Marching Band Coalition.
SVCC plans chocolatethemed event
The Susquehanna Valley Community Connection (SVCC) will hold a party with the theme “Chocolate Is the Best Therapy” on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. Punch will be available at 12:30 p.m., and lunch will be served at 1 p.m.
During the event, Robert Frick will share the story of Milton S. Hershey, founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company. James Pitman from Fort Washinton will present a message called “Hey! He’s Not Wearing Any Shoes!” and vocalist Joselyn Gehman will offer special music.
The event is open to the public. There is a fee to attend, and payment is due by Sunday, Sept. 3. For information on how to register, call 717-799-0088.
in tandem to form a parade that looped under the portico and around the grounds, making two passes by the gathering of residents.
“We are the second-oldest car club in the United States,” said Wilmer, noting that one older group exists in California.
“We were established back in 1953.” Original club members included Bill Schlote and Ron Mummal. The initial membership consisted of men who liked to race cars. Members named the club the “Axle Snappers Custom Car Club,” and the group met at Wilworth’s
garage, just East of Hinkletown on Route 322. Building and racing dragsters were among the first activities, and in 1959 the club’s flathead dragster set a national record and captured a national championship. Currently, the nonprofit Axle Snappers Club is open to
new members. “Our older members are getting older and with the younger members coming in, we changed our rules a bit to adapt for the younger generation with different cars,” explained Wilmer, who noted that the requirement that club members own American-made cars was recently dropped. The club meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Elks Lodge 1933, 170 Akron Road, Ephrata. “We all love cars of all makes and models,” said Wilmer. “We strive to promote the car hobby. We assist with and attend local car shows.”
Individuals interested in joining the club should call 717-413-8236 before attending a meeting. More information about the Axle Snappers may be found at http:// axlesnapperscarclub.com.

AUCTIONEER NOTE: Truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the last original large working farms in the area. Approx. 95-acres are tillable. Fields are basically level but the rich limestone top-soil drains very well and grows tremendous crops. Provides diverse income for financial stability. Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.

Museum, film festival announce collaboration
The North Museum of Nature and Science will be one of three screening locations for the Red Rose Film Festival on First Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4. As an Executive Producer-level sponsor of the Red Rose Film Festival (RRFF), the North Museum will open its 85-seat planetarium for screenings of several of the festival’s selected independent films.
In addition to the North Museum, the screening locations for the four-year-old festival are Zoetropolis and Lancaster Southern Market. One of the festival’s goals is to promote Lancaster to global filmmakers as a fertile place to create future works.
From more than 100 films submitted from all over the globe, the final selections will be made by a diverse panel of judges. Film submissions are due Friday, Sept. 1, and the screening schedule will be announced in mid-September. Additional information is available at www.redrose filmfestival.com.

Landis Valley to reopen historic house
Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will reopen the ground floor of the 1815 Brick Farm House on Friday, Sept. 1. The building has been closed for repairs, and the project was delayed due to the museum’s pandemic closure and issues with contracting.
The interior work included re-securing historic ceiling plaster to its lath, repairing water damage to walls, and painting all of the walls and woodwork. New exhibit panels tell the story of the generations of the Landis family that lived in the house as well as other facets of life in Landis Valley. In addition, the front porch was rebuilt, and the rain gutters were replaced.
Prior to the building’s closure, it could only be viewed during a tour or when staffed. The house will now reopen as a self-guided building.
