Years ago, Debbie Hollinger, founder of Home International, referred to the Second Street Thrift Shop she opened to help support that ministry as a “thrifttique.” Now that Alisha and Don Wambolt have reopened the shop as Welcome Home Thrift and More, in the Ironspire complex at 2800 North Reading Road, Suite 430, Adamstown, they are branding the new location with that concept in mind. Released Time Is Ready To Roll
In the fall of 2021, Deb Reimers, who coordinates the New Holland location for the ELANCO Released Time program, was concerned that she might not have enough volunteers to accommodate the number of students taking part. Although Reimers feared student registrations would have to be capped at 60, the program registered more than 130 students and enough volunteers were available each“Weweek.had six high school students who volunteered,” said Reimers, who noted that volunteers are multigenerational, ranging in age from high school seniors to senior citizens. Reimers added that both men and women help out as volunteers. Students in third through sixth grades at New Holland Elementary School will receive papers about the program shortly after the start of the school year, which will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Children who choose to take part will ride a bus from the school to Petra Church on Airport Road in New Holland each Thursday at 2:15 p.m. At Petra, students will be divided into two groups, with the third- and fourth-graders meeting in Petra’s multipurpose room and the fifthand sixth-grade students meeting in The Oasis. Students will be taught a lesson, sing songs, and pray during the first 20 minutes. The ELANCO Released Time program uses a twoyear sequential curriculum that begins with the establishment of God as Creator. The program establishes that humans are sinful and in need of a savior and that God provides a way to salvation through Jesus Christ. The second 20-minute period will be listening time. The students will be divided into small groups of four or fewer with an adult who listens, answers questions about the lesson, and helps with worksheets. Students who take part in the program will be given the opportunity to earn points toward a week at Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata, Greenview Bible Camp in Denver, or Tel Hai Camp in Honey Brook. Students will earn points each week by bringing their Bibles to Released Time and memorizing and looking up Bible verses. Students will receive awards for each 25 points they earn. For each 15 points students earn, they have a chance to put their name in a camp box. Each grade has its own camp box. At the end of the spring session, two students’ names from each grade will be chosen randomly from the boxes to win a camp scholarship. In addition, the two students with the highest number of points for the whole year will receive scholarships. Adults who would like to volunteer may call 717-283-8921 or email drjr145@yahoo.com. New volunteer orientation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1, and the first Released Time will take place on Thursday, Sept. 15. Individuals who would like to learn more about the program may find “ELANCO Released Time - New Holland Released Time” on Facebook.

Concepcion pointed out that connecting medical health with behavioral health can be beneficial for a number of reasons. “A lot of physical symptoms come out of behavioral health needs,” she said. “It’s a whole-care approach,” she added, noting that Union looks beyond physical and psychological symptoms. “A lot of patients with behavioral health needs have social deterrents of health,” she explained, noting that housing issues, financial issues, and food insecurity may be among these. “We include social workers and community health workers in whatever needs the patient has,” she said. “Having collaboration between clinician, behavioral health, and social work really wraps services around that patient to help them get Concepcionbetter.”stated that Union accepts all insurance plans. “Anybody can come here,” she pointed out. “We have a sliding fee for those who are uninsured.” Individuals and families may be connected to a social worker to learn what programs they qualify for. “(Social workers) will help them through the process of applying,” said Concepcion, who encourages those who are uninsured to call to learn more. “Part of being a FQHC is that we are able to offer a discounted rate based on family size and income, which may be as low as Readers25%.” who would like to know more may Community Care frompg 1
“Research has demonstrated that the initial conversations people have about mental health issues happen at a medical appointment,” noted Concepcion. “(A patient will) come in for something else, but say to provider, ‘By the way, I have been feeling like this,’” she explained. “That’s a natural transition for a provider to do a warm hand-off to a behavioral health consultant.” That hand-off will include referral to a master’s -evel behavioral health consultant who may be a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) or in training to reach that level. “They assess that patient and they can do therapy with them,” said Concepcion, who added if a patient is in need of psychiatric services and medications, two nurse practitioners who specialize in psychiatry can help. Patients may also be referred to community resources, but those individuals may not be located in New Holland. “The current LCSW comes once a week, but she can do tele-med (appointments) as well if the patient can’t come the day she is here,” said Concepcion, who noted that for some patients, lack of transportation is a barrier. “Having the ability to do tele-med can really help,” she said.

BY ANN MEAD ASH When Todd Capitao, director of financial empowerment at Tenfold, got married, he and his wife realized they were not quite in control of their spending. “I went to the dollar store and got a ledger and started tracking expenses,” said Capitao, who has since graduated to a computer spreadsheet for this purpose. In his role overseeing financial literacy classes for Tenfold’s Ann B. Barshinger Financial Empowerment Center, Capitao knows he has to practice what he preaches. Using a variety of apps combined with opportunity shopping and his spreadsheet, Capitao is on top of his family budget and happy to teach others how they can achieve that goal. “We have standard workshops,” said Capitao, who noted that before the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, classes were held in person. Now the classes are held virtually on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and Thursdays at 10 a.m. “We do budget, credit, savings, lending, and banking,” said Capitao. “Those are the five cores, and they are very basic.” Capitao tells those considering taking classes that he recommends taking the budgeting class first. “That’s key,” he said. “You can’t properly save unless you are budgeting.”Inaddition, each quarter that classes are held, a few electives are included. “It could be how to be more Earth conscious or how to buy a car or fraud,” Capitao said. “Those are things we try to review outside the standard ones.”Capitao explained that classes are taught with regard to student understanding. “The terms are defined,” he said, noting that students receive a book and that they may ask questions during classes verbally or via chat. He noted that classes are content driven and that those who are self-motivated can do well in them.According to Capitao, the best action to take following the classes is to sit down with a financial counselor either in person, virtually, or by telephone. “If we have 20 people in a virtual class, we cannot do 20 individual budgets,” he explained. “We will give (students) the tools and ideas and skills, but if (a student) has trouble or concerns doing a budget or handling credit, (they should) see us in person or virtually or by phone.” Before COVID-19, Tenfold personnel had dreamed of holding classes online, but now they would be happy to hold in-person classes again, and they welcome inquiries from organizations such as churches, ministries, businesses, and other that would like to host in-person classes. Pointing out the benefits of working with a counselor, Capitao noted that many people receive an extra paycheck twice a year that they do not always consider. “The counselors here have been able to assist people out of (the start of going into debt) because of that extra paycheck that isn’t on their radar,” he said. In the past, organizations, such as The Factory Ministries in Paradise, have offered rewards in the form of Factory Bucks to be used at The Factory Market, to participant who enroll in a class that effects theirReaderssustainability.whoare interested in taking Tenfold financial literacy classes may register by visiting www.wearetenfold.org and clicking on “events/classes.” Individuals who have questions may call 717-397-5182.

Fairmount resident Sandra Leonard will give a presentation on her family genealogy research on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room, 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, on the west side of the Fairmount campus.Leonard is a former librarian and at one time taught a course in which she helped others to write their stories. She is now a genealogist and the author of two books. The first, “From Sea to Shining Sea,” is based on her family history dating back to 1752. While doing research for this book, she uncovered and solved a mystery involving Indian Eve, a distant relative, and her upcoming presentation will include details about this research. Leonard’s second book, “From Bavaria to Brady,” was written with her husband, Keith, on his family history dating back to 1834, and the book includes many pictures. Leonard is currently working on a five-book historical series based on her family history. This program is free and open to the public. Copies of “From Bavaria to Brady” will be available for purchase at the event. Space is limited, and reservations are requested by calling 717-354-1893. The name Welcome Home also refers to the store’s expansion into home décor and furniture. Housewares and clothing for men, women, and children are still plentiful, but Don has been able to put his talents and creative gifts to work refinishing furniture for the store, which he had been doing as a hobby. “We are repurposing a lot of furniture,” said Don, who focuses on items dating from the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. “A lot of stuff is good quality but just outdated,” he said. The store now carries Dixie Belle paints. “We thought, ‘If we use the product, we will carry it,’” said Don, who noted that he is considering holding classes to help teach customers how to refinish their ownWelcomefinds.
Alisha first became involved in the Second Street operation in spring 2018, taking on a management role later that year and working closely with Debbie as she prepared to step into leadership. When the property at 222 N. Reading Road, Denver, where Second Street was located, was sold, the Wambolts looked for new spaces. Both Alisha and Don saw potential in the Ironspire space. While the store still supports Home International, which provides group homes for girls in India, Alisha noted that the store’s new name embodies Debbie’s passion for those girls to feel they were not in an orphanage, but rather at home. “We are honoring Debbie’s desire for the girls in India to feel that they were welcomed home,” said Alisha. The store has also been a resource to local families in need, partnering with area organizations to provide necessary clothing and items.

Home partners with other organizations that work to support those in need, including AbiArt Creative cards, which helps fund an orphanage in Haiti; Empowered Goods jewelry, which helps artisans in Mexico overcome poverty; and Girl Crush Company of Mount Joy, which helps single mothers reach self-sustainability. The shop is currently open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Extra parking and a second entrance are located at the back of the store. Among the donated items Welcome Home accepts are scrubs, toys, games, crafts, supplies, books, CDs, DVDs, jewelry, and small kitchen appliances.Volunteers are sought to sort donations and work in the shop on a regular basis. Alisha noted that groups are needed for one-time projects along. Applications may be picked up at the store. More information may be found at thrift.com.www.welcomehome

Creative Works of Lancaster and the Lancaster Dramatists’ Platform (LDP) will present readings of new plays by local playwrights on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. on the second floor of Tellus360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster, in the An Droichead room. After a several-year hiatus from public readings, during which many drafts were read around a table or on Zoom, members of the LDP will again share their work with an audience. The event will feature pieces by five playwrights: David Nice, John Reshetar, Tyler Joseph Rossi, Rachel Luann Strayer, and Bruce Walsh. The plays will be performed as readings by localOriginallyactors. formed in 2005, LDP seeks to build community through story, inviting writers of different experience levels, backgrounds, and identities to take part in each other’s processes. LDP exists to support and encourage central Pennsylvania playwrights by providing a friendly, structured environment where they may develop their craft; by platforming their work through public readings; and by connecting them to the national playwriting community.

Student Video Contest Posted

MANTEC has announced the annual statewide “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” video contest. Middle schools and manufacturers of any size in nine southcentral Pennsylvania counties, including Lancaster, York, and Dauphin, are invited to participate. This free program seeks to show participating seventhand eighth-graders that manufacturers offer many pathways to employment in modern production environments. The contest provides students a hands-on learning opportunity outside the normal school day, exposes them to the world of manufacturing, engages both their analytical and creative skills to create content, and seeks to help address longterm workforce issues. The contest also addresses a key element of equity: access to resources. Students of all academic abilities and financial circumstances can learn about pathways to family-sustaining jobs.Manufacturers gain the opportunity to show off their operations, build camaraderie among employees, and reinforce the significance of manufacturing to the next generation. Educators receive a free turnkey career exploration activity with a lesson plan that meets PDE requirements as an artifact in student Chapter 339 folders. Additionally, the community receives exposure across the region and state as the student/manufacturer videos are promoted and recognized. The registration deadline is Monday, Sept. 26. For more information or to register a school or business, visit www.mantec.org. To learn more about the statewide contest, visit www.whatssocool.org or contact Cindi Moses at cindi@ mantec.org or 717-341-4312.
