NHSAP Season To Conclude With Fiddler’s Picnic By Ann Mead Ash
New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) secretary/treasurer Sue Noll recently looked back on the success of this summer’s program, which brought a number of returning and new musical acts to the New Holland Area Community Park on East Jackson Street on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. “It has been a good summer with a lot of great shows,” said Noll. Traditionally, the final NHSAP event of the summer is the annual Fiddler’s Picnic. This year’s picnic will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, but the opening and closing times will be different. Live music will begin at 9 a.m. when the Summit Hill Bluegrass band will take the stage. Fiddlers are encouraged to arrive early to reserve a slot on the park stage. The event will conclude at 6 p.m.
The performance schedule allows a 30-minute spot for a group and 15 minutes for a single act or a duo. Usually up to 15 acts perform, and the picnic is often a place for musicians to join up to make music together. Musicians who are considering playing on stage together will sometimes gather in spots far from the stage to practice and often draw a crowd to their own mini concert. In addition to string players, individuals who play accordion, harmonica, and keyboard may visit the park to join in on well-known favorites such as “Rocky Top,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Golden Slippers.” Country and bluegrass tunes are staples of the event. A variety of musicians will gather to perform at the annual New Holland Summer Arts Program Fiddler’s Picnic scheduled for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, in the New Holland Area Community Park. This year, the event will open at 9 a.m. with a performance by the Summit Hill Bluegrass band.

Released Time Prepares For Fall Session
By Ann Mead Ash

ELANCO Released Time will begin observing its 26th year when the program meets this September. During the month of August, New Holland coordinator Deb Reimers was getting ready for the fall term to start by looking ahead and considering how many volunteers she will need. “I will need at least four listeners,” said Reimers, referring to the small group listening time that is part of each weekly session.
Looking forward to the start of the ELANCO Released Time program that will be offered through New Holland Elementary School this fall are (front, from left) Genevieve Reimers, Lillyan Reimers, Sadie Kauffman, (back) Jude Kauffman, Noah Reimers, and Johnathan Kauffman. This year’s program will be held at See Released Time pg 12 Petra Church beginning Sept. 12.
When members of the Shady Maple Benevolence and Community Outreach Committee first heard about the CrossNet Ministries Pathways to Housing program, which provides safe and affordable housing to ELANCO-area individuals, families, seniors, and veterans who are experiencing or are about to experience homelessness, they wanted to hold a fundraiser to help. “CrossNet is trying to (provide) apartments (for those in need), and it was something that touched our hearts,” said Gwen Zahm, who, along with fellow committee member Mylon Weaver, came up with the idea of holding a 5K run. “It felt right that (CrossNet) would benefit.” The first Shady Maple Benevolence Committee 5K Walk/Run and 1-Mile Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lloyd H. emotional resources,” explained Dahl. “Our desire is to collaborate and partner with local organizations, churches, businesses, and municipalities to see participants meet their goals and find permanent housing after completing the program.” In the last year, CrossNet has provided case support to about 250 individuals in the New Holland area. Dahl is happy to be working with the local business on the event. “We are incredibly thankful Shady Maple is hosting a 5K fundraiser … for our Pathways to Housing program,” she said. “We are excited to run and walk together as a community to address homelessness in ELANCO.” Sandra Paredes, who heads the benevolence committee, noted that this is not the first time Shady Maple has partnered with CrossNet Ministries. “We appreciate that CrossNet is a ministry of integrity, which encourages us to partner with them,” said Paredes. “We have similar values,” she added, referencing the company vision statement, which is “Serving all with honor and integrity.” Paredes explained that two aspects of that vision are compassion and giving generously. “This (fundraiser) fits well with our values, vision, and mission,” she said. Individuals who wish to take part in the 5K or fun run may register online at www.pretzelcitysports.com. A nominal service fee will apply, and online registration will close at midnight on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Those who register by Tuesday, Sept. 10, will receive a discount and a T-shirt. Not long after Danielle Elliott received the Shining Light Ellen Coach Award from Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster at the Inn at Leola Village on May 29, she headed for the Pocono Mountains, where she works at a summer camp for children. In the fall, she will return to her job as a learning support teacher at Burrowes Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster. For Elliott, who just signed up to volunteer for her sixth season with GOTR, working with children fulfills an important purpose. “Emotional and behavioral (needs) are what I am drawn to,” said Elliott, who noted that she was abandoned by a parent as a child. “When I was little … my teachers were there for me,” she said. “That’s what drew me to teaching and working with children. I never want (my students) to feel as alone as I did,” she said. “I want them to feel secure and have one person they know they can always turn to.” Elliott received her teaching certification from Millersville University, and she is currently attending graduate classes at the school. However, when one of her students was taken to the hospital emergency room, Elliott left a class at Millersville to be with her. When she arrived, medical personnel refused to let her see the patient, but the patient’s mother told them to treat her like family, and Elliott stayed with the student until the student was released. That type of dedication inspired every third- through fifth-grade girl on her GOTR team to nominate her for the Ellen Award. Elliott was also nominated by other teachers and parents of her GOTR team members. “One of the parents expressed how I would go out of my way (to help the girls),” said Elliott. “A lot of the girls told me they had written how important it is that I talk about self-image, and that helps them to feel more confident in themselves.” GOTR team members are not the only ones who benefit from Elliott’s coaching. “I get to see my students in a whole different light, and it helps me step back and understand who they are and how I can benefit them inside and outside of the classroom,” said Elliott. “It helps me with my self-confidence issues and body image issues (because) helping them reminds me to stay positive.” The GOTR 20-lesson curriculum is designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. “It’s super organized,” said Elliott, who added that the flexibility of the program is a real plus. “(GOTR) knows my group will respond to lessons differently than those at (other schools),” she said. “These girls think teachers are invincible and have these perfect worlds, (but the girls I coach) get to see that I am also human.” Pointing to a lesson about the influences in social media, Elliott noted that she has been able to show her team members the hidden influences so that the girls know to be aware of what could negatively influence them. Each recipient of the Ellen Award receives a special bracelet and $500 to pay it forward to a charity of her choice. Elliott has chosen to give the funds to Aevidum, an organization that works to create positive mental health environments in schools and communities across the nation. She would like to see the principles of Aevidum instilled in students in the School District of Lancaster, especially in elementary schools. “I am big on suicide awareness, and I don’t think the emotional needs of younger children are really being met,” she said. “I want my girls to have that system so that they’re not alone.” The Ellen Award, which was first given in 2017, is named for Ellen McCabe, the stepmother of GOTR Lancaster program director See GOTR pg 6

GOLD BUYING
By Ann Mead Ash
Inclement weather interfered with the 22nd annual COBYS Bike and Hike held in 2018. The bicycle and motorcycle rides were canceled, but the 3-mile walk soldiered on with 350 walkers braving the wet weather to help raise funds for the family services the organization provides. Earlier fundraisers had attracted between 400 and 500 attendees. Anne Stokes, director of development with COBYS, would like to see larger crowds at the 2019 Bike and Hike, and she and Doug May, COBYS’ communications and development manager, have planned to open this year’s Bike and Hike up to more area residents when it is held at the Lititz Church

Holland Rotary Club will sell water at the event. For many years, a quilt, donated by Witmer’s Quilt Shop, was given away at the picnic. Noll expressed gratitude to the owner for the donations in support of NHSAP. This year, a signed and framed Myrtle Tremblay print of a street scene from Lancaster will be given away at 5:30 p.m. NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. Noll said that new volunteers are always welcome. Help is especially needed with setting up prior to concerts and clearing the park afterward. Volunteers to accept freewill offerings during intermission are also needed. No admission will be charged for the Fiddler’s Picnic, but freewill offerings will be received throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Connecting The Community Through Art Heart Of Lancaster Show Planned For Labor Day Weekend By Chelsea Peifer
affordable,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the information booth, where people may also enter to win
drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working

Its Bikes For All program, which supplies low income individuals with reliable transportation via a bicycle, has had 58 beneficiaries. A donation box will be set up at the Heart of Lancaster for those interested in donating to The Common Wheel. “Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them. “We try very hard to focus on local artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market,
705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” “We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s

artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener. “We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17 with the opportunity to fix up and keep a bicycle that they can call their own and receive training in

Released Time from pg 1 During the 2018-19 school year, Released Time registered more than 100 students. This year, the program will once again meet at Petra Church on Airport Road in New Holland. The first session will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. Released Time will continue to meet each Thursday that school is in session through May 14, 2020. Reimers noted that each year the program is held, about 20 new students take part. This year, third- and fourth-grade students and fifth- and sixth-grade students will be divided up, with the younger grades meeting in Petra’s multipurpose room and the older students meeting in The Oasis. Reimers and her team of volunteers will work with the students during large group time, which consists of prayer, songs, and a lesson during the first 15 to 20 minutes. During the final 20 minutes, the students are broken into smaller groups with an adult to listen, answer questions about the lesson, and help with worksheets. The ELANCO program uses a two-year sequential curriculum that begins with the establishment of God as Creator. The program establishes that humans are sinful and in need of a savior and that God provides a way to salvation through Jesus Christ. Students who take part in the program will be given the opportunity to earn points toward a week at Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata, Greenview Bible Camp in Denver, or Tel Hai Camp in Honey Brook. Students earn points each week by bringing their Bibles to Released Time and memorizing and looking up Bible verses. Students receive awards for each 25 points they earn. For each 15 points students earn, they have a chance to put their name in a camp box. Each grade has its own camp box. At the end of the spring session, two students’ names from each grade will be chosen randomly from the boxes to win a camp scholarship. In addition, the two students with the highest number of points for the whole year will also receive scholarships. Reimers noted that the opportunity to attend camp on a scholarship attracts a number of students to the program. “The (children) are very excited about going to camp,” she said. “They all talk to each other (about the experience). It’s a big deal (to them).” Sixth-grade students who take part in the Released Time program can look forward to attending a production at Sight and Sound Theatres in the spring. “The graduation gift (to sixth-grade students) is a trip to Sight and Sound,” said Reimers. “It’s given to all sixth-grade students who attend the program.” During the week of Aug. 26, registration papers are scheduled to go home with every third- through sixth-grader at the school. Parents can send the completed registration papers back to the school. On Tuesday, Sept. 10, representatives of ELANCO Released Time will be at the New Holland Elementary School back-toschool night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Students who register prior to Wednesday, Sept. 11, will be able to go to the first session. Students may still register after the session begins. Organizers would like to see grandparents and other retired citizens from the area help out. Adults who would like to volunteer may call 717-354-6553. Individuals who would like to learn more about the program may find “ELANCO Released Time - New Holland Released Time” on Facebook.
