Friendship Community To Hold 5K Run/Walk A Letter From By Ann Mead Ash

As a runner, Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community, knows how 5Ks have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. While many organized runs have been converted to virtual events, many participants, Link included, miss running in person. So, when Link had the chance to offer input for the annual Friendship Community 5K Run/Walk, she liked the idea

of offering options. “We decided to focus on the 5K and have it be both virtual and in-person,” said Link. “Anyone who wants to support us but is feeling hesitant about being in groups of people, we understand and appreciate that.” For those runners, the 5K offers a virtual participation opportunity, which includes the same goodie bag, but can done at home at the runner’s leisure. For runners who want to join others in a 5K, the event will be held on

Friendship Community will hold a fundraising 5K with options for a virtual race as well as an in-person race on Sept. 26.

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, is keenly aware of the worldwide impact of COVID-19. HOPE International is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms - spiritual, material, social, and personal. Over its more than 20-year history, the organization, with offices at 227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250, Lancaster, has done that by loaning out more than $1 billion and helping to start savings groups among about a million clients in 16 countries. Now, those clients, who Rutt said are already on “fragile footing,” have been teetering on the brink. See HOPE International pg 2

Corine (right), a HOPE International client who lives in Zimbabwe, reacted to a loss of income due to COVID-19 by starting a bakery with other members of her savings group.

Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, with check-in and registration prior to the race beginning at 7 a.m. The run/walk race will start at 8 a.m., and awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m. “(We’re hoping) it won’t be humid in the morning, and it will be great (September) weather,” noted Link. The run will be a professionally timed race on a safe off-road course, which loops through Landis Homes and finishes back at the starting line. Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved. Link hopes the event will appeal to those who have missed running in traditional 5Ks. “We are trying to expand our horizons by connecting with folks who haven’t heard of us before to do some sort of in-person run because theirs was canceled,” she said. “It will look a little different, but we want to offer that race See Friendship 5K pg 4

HOPE. “These client businesses are starting to reopen, but they need capital to do that,” explained Rutt. To help raise that capital, HOPE is looking for sponsors and golfers for its 20th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 18, beginning at 6:30 a.m. A second round will be held the same day at 1 p.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon. The fundraising goal for this year’s tournament is $500,000. More information about the tournaments may be found by clicking on “Take Action” and then “Attend an Event” at www.hopeinternational.org. Those who wish to take part may email asmith@hopeinternational.org or call 717-464-3220, ext. 544. Golfers are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 11. Rutt has been impressed by the resilience of some of HOPE’s clients. “Irene in Paraguay got a small loan to start a hair salon,” he said, noting that countries like Paraguay do not offer stimulus packages. According to Rutt, Irene

that the shutdowns around the world have resulted in crises we may not be able to imagine. “In South Asia, they announced at 8 p.m. that they would shut down at midnight,” he noted. “In four hours, more than 40 million migrant workers became refugees in their own country. Most lived between 300 and 1,600 miles away from where they were located at the time of the shutdown.” The good news is that many HOPE clients were prepared to face the financial hardships of the pandemic. “Pre-COVID, there was a study done by an independent third-party organization in Malawi, where we work,” said Rutt, who noted that the study focused on how many families in that country would have the funds they needed to survive three weeks in an emergency. That amount was around $19. “(The study found that) 37% of the population in general had the ability to survive,” said Rutt. However, when the researchers surveyed HOPE savings group members, they found that 81% had the means to survive. “It shows the difference that our savings groups are making,” said Rutt.

“We have been trying to pull them off that proverbial cliff edge,” said Rutt. “We have gotten some results.” HOPE has instituted a three-phase plan called Rebuilding Dreams, which first provided food and water to clients who needed it to survive. The second phase involved a 60-day interest payment holiday. That crucial step cost HOPE about $500,000 a month, for a total expenditure of $1 million. The final phase, which focuses on recapitalization of the tiny client businesses, will include at least $2 million more from

He reported that Corine said, “When we saw that our savings group was suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we quickly put our heads together and decided to start a bakery. Our plan was that it would enable us to continue to save, but now it has exceeded our expectations by allowing us to use the income to (care for) our families.” Rutt pointed out the differences between facing the pandemic in the United States and in other parts of the world. “We are the aircraft carrier, but our clients in Burundi and Malawi and Rwanda are the life rafts being crushed by the waves,” he said. “For us … it’s a challenge, but compared to what the rest of the world is living with, it’s not (as big of a struggle).” Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE, reported

purchasing Mike Willig; and Ken Groff, vice president of store operations. Willig and Groff are both former Amelia’s employees with many years of experience. On June 30, that vision became a reality when Treasures Markets opened its flagship store located at 515 N. Franklin St., Lancaster, between the McDonald’s and McCaskey High School. The 30,000-square-foot building features a variety of groceries, including brand-name and locally produced food items, at discount prices on one side and merchandise ranging from jewelry and clothing to furniture and large appliances on the other. Willig pointed to the variety of food items neatly organized to the right of the store. “We wanted to give the local community access to the type of (grocery store) they don’t have access to in Lancaster City,” he said. Pautz noted that closeout items, including new clothing and shoes, priced at less than a third of the original retail. Outside, 40 free parking spaces are available. The store is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. Pautz explained that the mission of Treasures Markets has several facets: first, to supply affordable food in a food desert; second, to make other items available in the store at reasonable prices and to keep those items out of the waste stream; and third, to offer jobs. “We are working with Water Street Mission’s (WSM) Step Up program,” said Pautz, adding that they received a grant to do job training. “We are working in that program to bring some folks over once they complete the program at Water Street.” Groff added that the organization is already working with a few men to do job training. But job training is not the only way the organization has partnered with WSM. “This is a social enterprise,” said Pautz. “We created Treasures Markets as a benefit to Treasures of Hope Foundations, which is a 501(c)(3) with

the organization’s warehouse at 1140 Enterprise Road, East Petersburg. “We need lots of volunteers at the warehouse and here for greeters, to sort donations, tagging, and dressing room attendants,” said Pautz, who directed those who are looking to volunteer to the organization’s website at www.treasuresmarkets.com. She noted that volunteer information includes a description of each job along with a chance to sign up online for the days they are available to help. Donations are also accepted at the warehouse. “ We need donations of clothing, household goods, small appliances, and furniture,” said Pautz, who added

the sole intent to give the profits of this store back to the community it serves. This store is just a vehicle to fund the nonprofit.” WSM is one of the foundation’s main partners, and WSM will receive a large portion of the proceeds. However, Pautz explained that the goal is then to give funds to other nonprofits in Lancaster city that battle homelessness and food insecurity and help provide employment opportunities. “Eventually, there will be a grant process where local nonprofits will be able to apply for money,” she said. Treasures Markets could use volunteers at both the store and

that no appointment is necessary to make a donation. Donation hours may be found at the website. On one wall of the market are logos of organizations that have sponsored the market, including High Foundation, Fulton Bank, Ephrata National Bank, and Community Fellowship Church. The foundation launched a capital campaign in August to try to lower expenses at the store so that money can be invested into the community more quickly. “There’s room for more names on the wall,” said Pautz, who noted that those interested in donating may email ppautz@treasuresmarkets.com.

Clark Associates Charitable Foundation recently awarded New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) a $50,000 matching grant for revitalization of its kitchen, which feeds over 100 children daily. The center is approved to serve up to 336 meals for children per day. However, the original kitchen does not meet the growing demand for breakfast, lunch, and snacks for about 100 children each day. The center plans to renovate the kitchen and install a commercial kitchen. The total cost for renovations will be $145,000. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed additional financial burdens on the center which essential workers rely upon for child care. The commercial kitchen will include a commercial sanitizing dishwasher, which will not only clean dishes but will help the center with the task of sanitizing toys. Toys need to be washed frequently, and a commercial dishwasher will help accomplish this task more quickly and efficiently. The renovation will also include stainless steel wall cabinets, sinks, worktables, a reach-in refrigerator, an oven, flooring, installation, and construction. Since its reopening, the NHELC has made changes to its systems to make sure that the children and staff are safe. Children learn and play with the same group of children, and the same staff are kept with the same class. Children and staff spend most of the day outdoors. When indoors, staff and children age 2 and older wear masks. Hand washing and disinfecting rooms

Grant Supports LIFT Jobs Program Community Action Partnership (CAP) recently announced it received a $22,336 grant from the Truist Foundation in support of Learning In Full-Time (LIFT) Jobs, a partnership between CAP and Ephrata-based Four Seasons Produce. LIFT Jobs is a yearlong pilot program for low-income single mothers. It combines onthe-job training at Four Seasons Produce with intentional life skills development. Stipends are available to the participants for transportation, child care, and housing, three of the biggest barriers to employment facing single mothers struggling with poverty. By eliminating barriers to employment and supporting employees with personal and professional development, CAP is working to help the program’s participants escape the cycle of intergenerational poverty. LIFT Jobs takes the things people living in poverty need to become economically empowered - a good job, an understanding employer, and safety net supports - and brings them all together. This pilot program is testing a new model of employment that can be mutually beneficial to individuals who need jobs and companies looking to fill open positions. Funding from Truist Foundation will allow CAP to support the program participants with stipends for housing, including application fees, security deposits, first and last month’s rent, and any other housingrelated expenses that could derail a participant’s successful employment in the program. For more information about Community Action Partnership, readers may visit www.caplanc.org.

Veritas Works To Keep School Safe School officials have recently been focusing on how and if schools could reopen safely in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. While the leadership at Veritas Academy, a classical Christian school in Leola, recognizes the importance of safety measures to protect the health of students and staff, the school sees another challenge to meet: keeping education joyful through it all. “From the beginning of this summer, we’ve been saying that our plan is to reopen school in the fall safely and as close to normal as possible,” said Ty Fischer, Veritas Academy head of school. “One benefit we have to our advantage is the fact that we have spacious classrooms and relatively small class sizes, which allow us flexibility in making our classooms work for social distancing,” said Kylee Bowman, director of communications. “Coupled with creative use of outdoor and common spaces, Veritas is positioned to serve our families well by keeping students safe.” Due to a courtyard and a large yard behind the school, Veritas has ample outdoor space that it intends to put to full use this year. “Teachers taking students outside for class - whether for reading time, general instruction, or for interactive activities - has always been a regular occurrence around here,” Bowman noted. “This year, we have taken steps to make this more comfortable and accessible.” Large tents and tables set up in the courtyard will be used for outdoor class time, giving students ample time and space to spread out and learn in a different environment, especially since students will stay in the same classroom for most of the day in order to cut down on student traffic and potential exposure. The tents will allow for outdoor class time to happen even during hot and rainy days, and will remain in use as long as weather permits. Also, weather permitting, lunch will be a picnic for students. Students are able to bring lunches outside, and the cafeteria will not be used as long as COVID19 restrictions are in place. One sacrifice most classrooms had to make in order to allow for socially-distanced desk placement was the temporary removal of their reading nooks. The cafeteria will be transformed into a socially-distanced reading nook. Bean bags, rugs, cushions and more will be set up for classes to enjoy reading and book discussions together, with adequate sanitization between classes. With so much focus being placed on student and staff physical health, Veritas recognizes the importance of nurturing emotional, mental, and spiritual health as well. Whether making plexiglass dividers into additional, erasable workspaces or having classes outside under a tent or shade tree, the staff at Veritas is seeking to find new ways to show God’s love and truth to students while maintaining academic excellence.

Red Accordion Studios will present its first theater education class, Acting 101, this fall with Broadway and Sight & Sound veteran David Michael Felty. The eight-week series will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 8 through Oct. 27. All classes will be held at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. Acting 101 is for youths ages 12 to 18 and will explore content typically covered in college freshmanlevel acting classes, such as beats and tactics, essential action, improvisation, monologues, and truthfulness in acting with an introduction to Stanislavski. The class will take place in-person in a large space to ensure social distancing. The class will also be available via Zoom. Registration is required and there is a fee to join. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.redaccordion studios.com.

Felty appeared on Broadway in Frank Wildhorn’s “The Civil War” and in the third national Broadway tour of “Les Misérables.” Along with several regional theater productions of the show, Felty performed the role of Jean Valjean more than 500 times. He has also performed on the Sight & Sound stage as Boaz in “Ruth” and as Lucifer in “In the Beginning,” among others. Most recently, Felty grew and developed the musical theater major at Lancaster Bible College for seven years. Under his leadership, the program grew from three to 30 students. Red Accordion Studios is a performing arts and theater company based in Lancaster and Lititz that presents plays and musicals, and provides theater arts education opportunities. Red Accordion Studios also offers acting and singing lessons, workshops, and camps.

“Equipping Faith Leaders” Training Posted Equipping Faith Leaders will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The training will be held at Alpha and Omega Church, 708 Wabank Road, Lancaster. The goal of the workshop is to equip religious leaders, both clergy and laity, with information to take the next steps in developing an addiction prevention and recovery support team ministry that is congregational and is run by lay leaders. At the end of the workshop, participants will understand the role of the congregation in addressing opiate and other substance use disorders; be able to identify barriers and demonstrate specific steps to

initiate an effective team ministry; recognize the roles and expectations of congregational leadership, both clergy and laity; and be able to explain the work of a prevention and recovery support ministry team. The in-person training will follow social distancing protocols, including the wearing of masks. Individuals who arrive without a mask will be provided one. Hand sanitizer will also be provided. There is a limit of 25 participants. Lunch will be provided. To register, readers may visit https://goalproject.org/event/ f-a-i-t-h-initiatives-equipping -faith-leaders-3/.
