Fifth Quarter aims for the goal
BY ANN MEAD ASH“Iamwanting the students to experience God’s love,” said Landon Ritchie, youth and connections pastor with Lighthouse Assembly of God. “If (students) are facing trauma or hurts from their past that have held them captive, God wants to set them free, which is exciting.” Landon explained that the mission of Lighthouse is “for people to come as they are and be changed into who God wants them to be.” That mission extends to the Fifth Quarter program. “We love being able to be this place where students can come and be themselves and experience God,” he said.
For 2023, Fifth Quarters, which are designed for students in seventh through 12th grades, will be held at the church, 105 Earland Drive, New Holland, following selected Garden Spot High School (GSHS) home football games. Events are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 15, and Friday, Oct. 27, from 9:30 p.m. until midnight. Fifth Quarter offers fun
activities for students such as firepits; football; ultimate frisbee; volleyball; wiffle ball, which was especially popular last year; and free refreshments, specifically walking tacos and iced coffee.
Back to school with a new playground
BY ANN MEAD ASHOn the second of two Blue Ball Elementary School (BBES) back-toschool nights, principal Heather Schrantz wore a bright pink BBES shirt as she and assistant principal Andrew Kreider laid out dishes of ice cream in a variety of flavors on tables set up behind the school. As Schrantz spooned bright blue sprinkles onto scoops of vanilla ice cream, she talked excitedly about the new playground that was completed at the school over the summer.
“We started talking about a potential playground mid-spring,” recalled Schrantz. “There was an old structure (behind the school), and there were some issues with it.” Among those issues was a lack of accessibility for children from ELANCO and other school districts who are served by the multiple disabilities (MDS) classroom at the school. “All those children need supports and assistance, and many are in wheelchairs,” explained Schrantz. “We knew everything had to be wheelchair accessible.”
The Blue Ball PTO recommended See BBES pg 2
In addition, efforts are made to encourage interaction between small groups of students. “Last year, we filled our parking lot spaces with tables so students could sit together, hang out, and
talk, and listen during the preaching,” said Landon, who will speak at the first event and possibly the second one as well. “We will have adult leaders who will come through to talk to students and play games. It’s
cool to see,” he said.
Landon organizes Fifth Quarters with help from the Youth Alive Club, a Bible club that meets at GSHS, and is led by Abby Moyer.

Second maker’s market scheduled at Garden Spot Village
BY ANN MEAD ASH“We want the greater community to know about us,” said Steve Heydt, greenhouse manager with Garden Spot Village (GSV). “We like to extend the knowledge of what we’re growing here to our outer community.”
“It’s a nice way to invite the community to see the greenhouse,” added Colleen Musselman, director of life enrichment with GSV.
Heydt and Musselman have teamed up to organize the second maker’s market event, called “Fifth Friday at See GSV pg 16

reaching out to Swing Kingdom in Leola. “We told (Swing Kingdom) what we needed, and they started putting it together,” said Schrantz. The new playground includes a climbing structure and swings. “We needed a surface we could take the wheelchairs on,” said Schrantz of the new playground foundation that also provides a soft landing. “The wheelchairs can roll across it easily.” Schrantz noted that all the ramps but one (on the climbing structure) are Americans with Disabilities Act compliant. In addition, a new swing enables a wheelchair to roll right onto it for use.
“(The new playground) came together quickly,” said Schrantz, who explained that at the end of the school year, the district removed the old playground and some trees to prepare the site. Swing Kingdom then completed the customized design and was able to install the new structure during two weeks in July. The playground was ready for children to enjoy in early August and was unveiled to visitors at the back-to-school nights.
“Kudos to our district office (because) they were very generous in their support,” said
Schrantz. “We have one of (only a few) handicappedaccessible playgrounds in the county. That’s really cool, and we feel so fortunate.”
Back-to-school nights are set up to give children a chance to meet their new teachers. BBES held back-toschool night for fourththrough sixth-graders and their families on Aug. 16. Kindergartners through third-graders and their families visited on Aug. 17. “The

families come in the front door, and the students visit teachers and make their way to the playground in the back,” said Schrantz. Along with the ice cream and new playground, table displays were set up behind the building and staffed by representatives of Blue Ball Elementary food services, Blue Ball PTO, ELANCO Released Time, Cub Scout Pack 148 of New Holland, and Cub Scout Pack 172 of Terre Hill.
St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 133 Church St., Bowmansville, will host a flea market and yard sale in its parking lot on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 7 a.m. Multiple families will sell a variety of items, including furniture, clothing, tools, collectibles, and household items. Quilter’s Yard-age Sale to benefit MCC
Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) invites quilters, sewists and crafters to the 2023 Quilter’s Yard-age Sale on Friday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Named after the substantial amounts of fabric yardage for sale, the event will take place at the Material Resource Center (MCR), located at 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata.
Throughout the year, donations of fabric, sewing supplies and unfinished quilting projects are given to the MRC. These items come from people who are cleaning out their sewing rooms, downsizing their homes or closing their fabric stores. Bringing these donations to the MRC keeps sewing and quilting items from ending up in the landfill. It also helps to support the ministries of MCC in relief, development and peacebuilding. Engaging hobbies for seniors
The value of hobbies is undeniable. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology found that employees who engaged in creative hobbies outside of work were more creative on work projects and had a better attitude on the job. A separate study published in Psychosomatic Medicine in 2009 reported that individuals who engaged in enjoyable leisure activities had lower blood pressure and a smaller waist circumference. The beneficial nature of hobbies is good news for seniors, many of whom have ample time for leisure activities. Whether seniors are retired or still working but don’t have the responsibilities of parenting, the following are some fun and engaging hobbies to fill that free time.
- Cooking: Years spent hustling and bustling through the daily grind of personal and professional obligations might have forced individuals to focus on cooking that emphasized convenience over culinary skill. With more free time, seniors can look to cooking classes or take the self-taught route and purchase a new cookbook filled
with delicious recipes. A well-cooked homemade meal can provide a sense of accomplishment and afford seniors an opportunity to control the ingredients in the foods they eat, which can be important for individuals with health-related dietary restrictions.
- Writing: Many individuals have penned their memoirs after notable careers and lives. While individuals needn’t make their memoirs public, writing can be a great way for seniors to document their own lives and the lives of their family members. Interest in genealogy has risen considerably in recent years, as easily accessible websites like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com have made it easier than ever for individuals to learn about their roots. Seniors can contextualize the information provided by genealogy websites by writing about their personal experiences and sharing what they know about the lives of their parents, siblings, grandparents, and other family members.
- Gardening: Seniors looking for hobbies that get them out in the great outdoors need look no further than their own backyards.
Zerbe Retirement Community, family owned & operated for over 65 years, is hiring for these positions: CNA, LPN, Cook, Dietary Aide and Utility/Dishwasher. Reach Out! We are a great place to work!
Picking the right time to retire
Gardening can benefit the body in myriad ways. According to the Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS), gardening has the potential to burn as many calories as working out in the gym. In addition, the MCHS notes that individuals who grow their own fruits and vegetables are more likely to include those foods in their own diets, thus saving them money at the grocery store and also increasing their intake of nutrient-rich foods.
- Swimming: Swimming is an ideal exercise for seniors, as it’s low-impact but still a great way to utilize the entire body. A 2007 study published in the journal Quality of Life Research found that water-based exercise improves older adults’ quality of life and decreases disability. A separate study published in 2008 in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness found that water-based exercise can improve or help to maintain bone health in postmenopausal women.
These are just a few of the many hobbies seniors can pursue as they look for positive and fun ways to spend their free time.
Professionals work hard to achieve both short- and longterm goals. Retirement certainly qualifies as a long-term goal, and many people spend decades building and investing in a nest egg that they hope will help them enjoy their golden years to the fullest extent.
The decision regarding when to retire is affected by a host of variables, so a good time for one individual may not be ideal for another. Professionals on the cusp of retirement can consider several factors as they try to pick the right time to retire.
Individuals should familiarize themselves with the rules of Social Security so they can maximize their benefits. Individuals can begin claiming Social Security benefits at age 62, although those benefits will be reduced by 25%. If individuals wait until they are 66 or, in some cases, 67 to claim Social Security benefits, they will receive their full benefits. The Social Security
Administration notes that those who can wait until age 70 to claim benefits will receive as much as 132% of the monthly benefit they would have received at full retirement age. These distinctions are especially important for people who will be looking to government-sponsored programs to provide significant financial support in retirement. Individuals who won’t rely as heavily on such programs may be able to retire earlier.
Seniors should also consider their debts. Carrying debt into retirement can be risky, so it’s ideal to pay off all debts, including a mortgage and car payments, before retiring. Doing so can provide more financial flexibility and make it easier to manage unforeseen expenses, such as those incurred due to health problems.
Seniors must also consider their retirement living expenses. It’s clear that a sizable nest egg is a necessity for
anyone hoping to live comfortably in retirement, but the tricky part is figuring out just how big that nest egg must be. Individuals can speak with a financial adviser and discuss what their retirement living expenses will be. Conventional wisdom based on the Consumer Price Index suggests individuals will need to replace between 70% and 80% of their pre-retirement income after concluding their career. But even that figure is not set in stone, as rising inflation, such as the rapid spike experienced in 2022, can quickly put retirees in financial jeopardy. By estimating the expenses they might have in retirement, individuals can begin to see how close to or far away from retirement they may be. They should budget for inflation so any spike in living expenses can be easier to manage.
Many individuals recognize that there’s no perfect time to retire, but a few simple strategies can help people make the best decision possible.
Strength training for seniors
A balanced diet and exercise, which includes a combination of aerobic activities and strength training, is necessary to maintain longterm health.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to protect their overall health. Exercise helps to delay or prevent many of the conditions that come with age. Adults age 65 and older should aim for the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity,
such as brisk walking, and at least two days of activities that strengthen muscles. When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors can follow a few safety guidelines.
- Speak with a health care provider first. Before beginning an exercise regimen, people should have a discussion with their general practitioner about their fitness goals. The doctor can recommend strategies that are safe and point out any exercises that may compromise the patient’s overall health.
- Master basic exercises first. Anyone new to
strength training, which is sometimes known as resistance training, can start out slowly, even just using body weight to provide resistance. Resistance exercises can include squats, crunches, modified pushups, planks, and lunges.
- Advance to resistance bands. When a person is ready to move on to something else, he or she may consider resistance bands as an alternative to free weights. The bands can help a person develop good form before introducing weight. Good form is key to avoiding injury.
- Work with a trainer. Working with a certified personal trainer can help a person learn how to use free weights and strength-training machines correctly. A trainer also can create a routine that includes the right number of sets and repetitions to gradually build and maintain muscle mass. If someone decides against
Strength training
hiring a trainer, gym staff members may guide them on using equipment and demonstrate proper form.
- Exercise with a friend. Strength training with a friend or family member can provide motivation and keep people on target to meet their goals.
- Build up gradually. A person’s first strength training session should only last 10 to 15 minutes, according to Tiffany Chag, a strength
frompg 8
coach at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. This time limit enables the person to gauge soreness. Anyone new to strength training should wait until soreness abates before beginning the next session. Exercises that build strength are a vital part of maintaining health as a senior. These exercises help maintain muscle mass and also improve balance and bone health.

theGreenhouse,” for Friday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the GSV aeroponic greenhouse, 448 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The event will feature a number of crafters, food trucks, and entertainment by a strolling minstrel, along with a chance to see the 24 towers at the greenhouse and learn how the undertaking supplies food to GSV and beyond.
“We line the walkways with crafters, leaving plenty of space for people to visit (them),” explained Musselman, who added that canopies willbe placed outside for other crafters.
According to Musselman, the variety of crafters present will include those working with stained glass, fabrics, and jewelry. Paintings, customized mugs, Christmas ornaments, and other seasonal crafts will also be offered for sale.
“We had a great turnout last year with more than 100 visitors,” noted Heydt. Heydt oversees the greenhouse, which produces vegetables that include six varieties of lettuce, herbs, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, and edible flowers. “All our produce is harvested three times a week by volunteer residents and used locally,” said Heydt, who added that residents, especially those
who gardened in the past, enjoythe greenhouse tremendously. “It’s really nice in the winter when it’s 65 degrees in here,” he added. Everything that’s harvested is used locally, first by GSV kitchens. About 30 pounds of lettuce a month is donated to CrossNet Ministries Food and Nutrition Center, and a local restaurant purchases up to 12 pounds weekly. Heydt said that the greenhouse can grow more than 250 plants at a time. “We don’t grow them all at once, though,” Heydt said. “We grow them in stages.” Heydt stated that the greenhouse allows vegetables to go from seed to plant in six to eight weeks.
