BY ANN MEAD ASH Lisa Kerstetter, director of marketing and events with CrossNet Ministries of New Holland, has a passion for providing for children in need. “It’s on my heart for kids to have a nice coat to keep them warm and that they are not afraid to wear,” said Kerstetter, adding that having a new coat can inspire feelings of pride, excitement, and joy, which in turn can help build self-esteem. “Children of poverty don’t always have nice coats, and they feel different (from their peers),” Kerstetter explained. Last year, CrossNet gave away more than 200 coats during its annual Coat Giveaway event, which takes place at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. This year’s giveaway will be held on Monday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The giveaway serves infants through seniors in high school within the ELANCO School District whose families participate in free and reduced-cost lunch programs or have been financially affected by COVID-19 restrictions. Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, will be required. To gather the necessary items to keep New Holland-area children warm this winter, CrossNet will accept coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. Toiletries will also be collected at CrossNet’s offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, through Thursday, Oct. 6. Donors who bring a brand-new coat to contribute to the drive will be entered to win a $50 gift card. The gift card drawing will be held following the end of the Kerstetterdrive.noted that there are two special needs that stand out this year. First, she would like to be able to offer more boots to children. “Families come in looking for winter boots,” said Kerstetter, who said both new and gently used boots are being accepted. “We live in a rural area, and there are kids who live on farms, who really need boots,” she said.

BY ANN MEAD ASH Carousels are whimsical contraptions. Whether located in an amusement park or on the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street during the New Holland Fair, a merry-go-round can light up the eyes of people of all ages and elicit squeals of delight from children. Eileen Gregg, author of “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel,” knows this well. As a guest of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS), Gregg will speak about the history of the Rocky Springs carousel, along with efforts to resurrect the merry-go-round in a Lancaster location, on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Rocky Springs Park was a fixture in Lancaster from 1899 to 1968. 5 See CrossNet 9

According to Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount, the organization’s annual auction and chicken barbecue, which benefits the community’s Sharing Fund, is a collaborative effort. Asked about the many theme baskets that will be auctioned at the event, Passage noted that they are contributed by staff and a variety of sources from the surrounding community. In fact, contributions to be auctioned have come from as far away as Ireland.

St. John Center Lutheran Church, 599 Reading Road, East Earl, will host a concert by Ahava in the grove on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 5 p.m. Ahava, which is Hebrew for love, was founded in May 2021. The group is the worship band at Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stevens, and developed out of requests to integrate contemporary Christian music into the traditional liturgical worship service. The band plays music in a range of styles from traditional gospel to contemporary Christian. Ahava is under the direction Vickie Kissinger, director of music at Mellingers and a lifelong organist and singer. She was also a PA State Senior Idol. In Ahava, Kissinger provides vocals and plays the keyboard. The band also includes pastor Tim and Kim Craven, John and Erin Biles and Jon Hogan. Tim and Kim are members of the well-known Craven Family Band, and they have been playing country, folk and bluegrass since the late 1970s. In Ahava, they play the guitar and bass. Erin is a high school choral and theater director, and her husband, John, is a high school English teacher and theater director; both are vocalists in Ahava. Jon Hogan has a long history of playing percussion in marching bands and other ensembles. Attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs, practice social distancing and follow current CDC guidelines. A concession stand will offer light refreshments. A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped-accessible restrooms will be available. Gregg’s book tells the story of one of this country’s best-preserved antique carousels from the Golden Age of Carousel Carving, which began around 1880 and ended with the Great Depression. Gregg’s book was published in 2021, and it is now in its thirdGreggprinting.has said that she sees her book as a story that needed to be written while people who have memories of Rocky Springs Park are still living. According to Gregg, fewer than 150 of the 5,000 carousels that once existed in the U.S. remain. She noted that the Rocky Springs Carousel, which has been in storage in the Lancaster area for 22 years, is considered by authorities on carousels to be one of the finest.

Gregg’s book includes more than 230 pages, 52 chapters, and 122 photos - 112 of them in color. The six sections of the book cover the history of the carousel, built by the Dentzel family and placed near the beach in Rocky Springs Park in 1899. The Dentzels had begun making carousels in Germany. The Rocky Springs Park closed in 1968 and reopened briefly in 1979. The carousel spent time at a park in Michigan, before being moved to Dolly Parton’s Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. In 1999, volunteers returned the carousel to Lancaster. The nonprofit Rocky Springs Carousel Association seeks to save the merry-go-round, which Gregg called “a national treasure.” The program is open to the public. The Country Gardeners of Eastern Lancaster County will sponsor a fall garden tour, themed “Fall in Love With Gardening,” on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour will feature seven local properties with ideas for gardening in the third season. In addition to the season’s typical sunflowers, the gardens include a variety of less-used perennials and annuals planted in unique combinations to create a new look. In one garden, tropical plants are featured at their best from a full summer’s growth, and another takes a fruit tree to a new level. One garden has a catio built for a cat rescue person’s passion. For more information, call 717768-7676. Discounted tickets may be purchased in advance at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Tickets may be purchased at 58 Heister Ave., New Holland, on the day of the event.

A variety of handmade items are traditionally sold at the auction. Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator, said approximately 30 quilts, plus wall hangings, pillows, and quillows, will go up for bids. “Typically, they sell about 100 (quilted) things,” said Swailes. Probably the smallest quilted item to be sold will be a miniature Log Cabin sampler, consisting of 472 pieces, made in Ireland by Rebecca GregorySmith, great-granddaughter of Fairmount resident Laura Zimmerman. The tiny hand-stitched quilt, which was shipped to Fairmount and donated by Zimmerman, is the most recent in a line of samplers from Gregory-Smith dating back more than 15 years. A braided rug handmade and donated by a Fairmount resident will also be sold. The 26-by54-inch rug is made of all-new wool and features a mixture of colors and patterns, including purple, teal, aqua, red, black, and brown in both plaids and Attendeessolids.who are outbid or not in need of any auction items can also help the Sharing Fund with a Make a Difference bid, which will cover a half day or full day of patient care. Both Passage and Swailes enjoyed discussing the many food items that will be available for purchase. In addition to breakfast, Passage noted homemade doughnuts will be made on-site. Swailes added that french fries made on-site and fry pies, which are similar to turnovers, will be sold. Passage pointed out that fresh squeezed lemonade is a perennial favorite and that soft ice cream will be sold. Passage noted organizers expect to sell ground cherry pies at the event. The Sharing Fund covers about $2.8 million yearly in uncompensated resident care. The 2021 auction and barbecue raised $109,950, but this year this year, organizers hope the event will bring in $125,000 for the cause.

Every third month, the group enjoys dinner at the church and an informal session. “There is no guest speaker, and we share a meal,” Cheryl explained. “It’s sort of like a covered dish (potluck) or sometimes we order (food).” The meetings, which generally last until 8:30 p.m., end in prayer. Cheryl started the support group in the midst of the pandemic in July of 2020. Her husband, the Rev. David Heineman, who is a board-certified hospice chaplain, offers support and expertise for the group. Conestoga Mennonite Church is located at 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown.
