2021 Fifth Quarter To Kick Off fter having to cancel Fifth Quarter in the fall of 2020, Lighthouse Assembly of God youth pastor and outreach coordinator Landon Ritchie and vision coordinator Logan Ritchie are excited to be holding the free community event for students in seventh through 12th grades again this fall. The gatherings are held at the church, 105 Earland Drive, New Holland, following selected Garden Spot High School (GSHS) home football games. This year’s events will be held on Fridays, Sept. 17 and Oct. 8, from 9:30 p.m. until midnight. While Fifth Quarter will offer the same firepits, football, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, and free food - walking tacos and iced coffee - as in the past, Logan noted that efforts will be made to encourage more interaction between small groups of students. “There will be more space for students to sit and talk with their friends,” said Logan, who noted

that one of the parking lots will be arranged like a café complete with string lights. “We want to give kids a chance to reconnect and have more community,” she said. “We are trying to set it up for kids who aren’t interested in running and playing sports by giving them somewhere comfortable to be.” Landon noted that an inflatable archway will mark the entrance to the Fifth Quarter event. In 2019, organizers decided to add a speaker to the gatherings. This year, for the Sept. 17 Fifth Quarter, Landon has decided to talk for a few minutes about overcoming anxiety and battling depression. “A lot of students’ lives have been turned upside down (by COVID19),” he noted. “A lot are struggling with anxiety and depression, but Jesus sets us free from those things.” Landon said he plans to spend about 10 minutes preaching faith to the students followed by a salvation call. “Fifth Quarter is an amazing fun event, but if we aren’t reaching these kids, we haven’t See Fifth Quarter pg 3

When Cara Scudner’s young cousin asked her to help with the Girls on Track team she had joined at Sacred Heart in Lancaster in 2013, Scudner was prepared. Having taken 5:30 a.m. jaunts with Back on My Feet - a running program for members of the homeless community - during her last year of college, Scudner signed on as assistant coach. See GOTR pg 9

Coming off the COVID-19 restrictions that marked the last several months, staff at Life Awakening made the decision that the organization’s 13th annual fundraiser should be on the lighter side. With that goal in mind, they gave the event the theme “It’s Time to Laugh Again” and engaged Christian comedian Gordon Douglas to entertain following a fruit and dessert bar that will include glutenfree options. Life Awakening will hold the fundraiser on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Springside Barn,

1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Douglas is a pastor and speaker, as well as a comedian, known for weaving life lessons into his programs and sharing what he has learned through tragic deaths, his wife’s recovery from cancer, his dad’s many years in a wheelchair, and other experiences. Douglas has previously performed in the New Holland area and at Life Awakening events. “ We have had him two other times, and people really loved him, so we decided to bring him back,” said Life Awakening executive director Linda Ingham.

He noted that the events have attracted more students each year since they were first held. “The largest one our first year (attracted) 75 students,” he noted. “It has consistently grown … and built momentum.” He added that in 2019, 350 students attended a single event and that this year he would like to see 400 take part in one evening. They need to know that there is a church in their community that loves and cares for them and a Savior who died for them. The new director at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, 5380 Lincoln Highway, Gap, has a wealth of experience in social services, ranging from counseling to teaching teen dating violence prevention, but it is networking that was on Straub’s mind when asked about her background. “I was networking with community agencies (in my prior position), and I had a lot of contacts,” recalled Straub. “That was one of the reasons (then-director) Debbie (Davenport) said she hired me (as client services and outreach specialist in 2018).” Straub’s experience in networking occurred when she worked for Lancaster County Juvenile Probation, where, along with another officer, she set up a community service program by connecting with various county organizations. In her previous role at Cornerstone, she worked with clients, facilitated educational programs, and oversaw volunteers, but she also built relationships with community organizations

such as Solanco Family Life Network in Quarryville, CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, and The Factory Ministries in Paradise. The ministry also serves Octorara Area and Oxford Area school districts. Before Straub began networking with area agencies, the Williamsport native majored in criminal justice at Edinboro University. After graduation, she worked at a maximum security juvenile facility for teen girls in Danville. She also served as a social worker for a foster care agency, counseling juveniles and their families for four years. After marrying and moving to Lancaster County, Straub worked for juvenile probation and, as her three daughters were born, held a series of part-time jobs before landing at Cornerstone, where she was promoted to director of operations in 2019. Straub is proud of having taught Constructing Safe Relationships, a curriculum focused on preventing teen dating violence, to well over 600 students at area schools, including Solanco and Oxford, in the last two years. She also schooled student assistant program teachers at Garden Spot High School in the details of the program. “These are teachers who are identified as safe (people) for kids who need to talk or are struggling,” she explained. Looking ahead, Straub will be working to implement Cornerstone’s current strategic plan, which includes offering more off-site engagements, diversifying services through innovation, and developing recurring revenue streams. “(We’d also like to see) more client referrals coming from community partnerships,” said Straub, noting she plans to continue developing relationships with other local organizations. Phase one is the lifestyle seminar focused on breaking the damaging power of sin. Phase two begins teaching God’s design for life in union with Christ. Phase three pertains to God’s heart and plan for His children, and phase four explores the facilitator’s role in the Process. In addition, YWAM missionaries Josiah and Kayla Shenk will discuss how they are using the Process in their ministry. Readers who would like to attend the event are asked to make reservations by Wednesday, Sept. 15, by emailing chelsea@lifeawakening07.org or calling 717-354-2888. Following the end of that season, Scudner contacted Jen West, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director, to ask where the program might use her as a

Cara Scudner

coach. Since then, Scudner, who is a competitive adult figure skater with the Red Rose Figure Skating Club, has coached 17 seasons with GOTR, including stints at Fritz and Nitrauer elementary schools and even organizing a community team made up of girls from public, private, and homeschool situations in Leola during 2020. Scudner also set up a decorated 5K course for participants who lived near her home when GOTR’s spring 2020 event was canceled. In June of 2021, Scudner was presented

with the Ellen Award, which is named for Ellen McCabe, who was West’s stepmother. GOTR coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, parents, and girls who make up the GOTR teams, among others. Scudner was nominated by parents and participants, with several lauding her positive outlook, caring attitude, availability to the girls, and passion to help them develop self-confidence. Scudner sees coaching as an opportunity to give back while reaping satisfaction from the participants’ accomplishments. “The most rewarding thing is seeing the girls gain confidence and seeing how much they change over the season,” said Scudner, who added that everything about coaching is fun, but that the culminating 5K, which the girls run at the end of the season, is “magical.” The winner of the Ellen

Award receives a special bracelet and $500 to donate to the nonprofit of her choice. Scudner chose Patients R Waiting, an organization focused on eliminating health disparities by increasing diversity in medicine. While Scudner organized a community GOTR team at a church near her home during COVID-19 restrictions, the organization is returning to meeting at many Lancaster schools for the fall season. The program will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 6, with a 5K at Millersville University, 40 Dilworth Road, Millersville, at 8:30 a.m. About 20 teams and as many as 400 participants are expected for the fall season, but West would like to see more girls be able to take part in the spring of 2022. To increase the number of participants, more volunteer coaches are needed. “Many of our coaches are teachers, and teachers are so incredibly overloaded right now,” explained West, who is looking to family members of girls and community members to step up. “The girls need the social and emotional connection with friends now more than ever,” said West, who hopes that by spring the program will be able to serve 1,000 girls countywide as in the past. LancasterHistory To Honor Constitution Day

Friends In Action International (FIA), a nonprofit in Middletown, has hosted multiple international service trips to remote locations for almost 30 years. Throughout the organization’s six countries of service, volunteers complete a variety of infrastructure projects, life skills trainings, and Bible teaching sessions in support of missionary work targeting unreached people groups. Due to COVID-19 lockdowns, travel bans, and social distancing requirements, many of these trips were canceled in 2020 and 2021. However, FIA has adapted its operations so local volunteers can continue their international mission efforts. Embracing technology options, Friends In Action field leaders and volunteers have used phone calls, texts, and Zoom meetings to continue to connect with indigenous people abroad. “Even in very remote

locations, we can FaceTime or speak with national partners and missionaries in real time. Thankfully, we have been able to sustain impacts and service in all locations,” said executive director Tim Johnston. Mike Butler, Friends In Action’s field leader to Papua New Guinea, was able to teach a missionary how to repair a generator through email exchanges. While solar power provides an energy source, frequent cloudy days can leave missionaries without enough power to charge computers, lights, or fans. A generator provides an additional power source and also enables missionaries to run power tools used to repair damage caused by termites and mold. Bolivian national pastors use WhatsApp to communicate with FIA staff and volunteers. COVID-19 has created significant needs for relief aid such as See FIA pg 18
