On the windowsill behind Rachel Weaver’s desk in her CrossNet office, 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, are various children’s books. Among the selection are tales of Curious George and Pete the Cat. Weaver uses the books as part of the program she implements to help area children and parents to connect in ways that will help children realize their full potential. When Community Action Program (CAP) of Lancaster County placed Weaver, a family development specialist, at CrossNet in August 2018, the goal was to put her in a location that was already connected to the community. The placement means that CrossNet can better collaborate with the ELANCO School District to improve the district’s kindergarten readiness rating. “We are second to the bottom in pre-K
readiness (of 17 districts) in Lancaster County,” noted Meredith Dahl, executive director with CrossNet. Weaver works for CAP, but she is implementing the Parents as Teachers program in ELANCO through CrossNet. She has a CAP supervisor, as well as a CrossNet supervisor. “(Parents as Teachers) is an evidence-based home visiting program that works to promote optimal early development,” explained Weaver, who noted that her twicemonthly visits to a child’s home are focused on improving learning and health by encouraging parents and children to engage intensely for up to 90 minutes at a time. “The goal is for the program to create a model for (parents and children) that they can do as often as they can, with every day being (the) optimal (frequency),” said Weaver. Each time Weaver visits a child, her goal is to complete three components. See Kindergarten Readiness pg 9

For The Love Of Community By Ann Mead Ash
Steve Loewen feels a strong connection to St. Stephen Reformed Church in New Holland. “I go through the cemetery almost every day, and I look up at the church,” said Loewen. In the spring of 2015, Loewen was the first to sound the alarm when the 1801 church steeple was leaning. “I noticed it was (tipping) to the east,” recalled Loewen, who then helped raise funds to restore the steeple. Loewen feels a strong sense of connection to New Holland as a whole, as well. A 2010 Jefferson Award winner, he has served with a number of local organizations, including the New Holland Farmers Day Association, the See Steve Loewen pg 5
Steve Loewen has been an active community member and business owner in New Holland for more than 40 years. His devotion to the New Holland area is evidenced by the many organizations to which he has contributed time and effort.

PENNYSAVER continues to grow and that last year even more local women joined the group from the Lancaster, Berks and Chester county group will take part in a service day at areas. “Attendance was great through the GAiN’s Logistics Center in Mount Joy on whole year. We had a number of young April 7, 2020. mothers and other people invite friends,” A new program, “Seeing God’s Unique Creation Through the Bubbles,” will be presented on Jan. 14, 2020, featuring guest speakers Krystal and Chad Frankhouser. The pair will talk about God’s unique creatures that live in the ocean. “They are scuba divers, and they will show films done while scuba diving,” said Essick. Another highlight will be the “My Favorite Things” meeting on March 10, 2020, during which attendees will be asked to buy or make three different items valued at $5 or less to share with others. “You can bring homemade jam or jelly or bake a plate of cookies or bring your favorite lip gloss or hand soap,” Essick explained. “You stand up and say why it’s one of your favorite things, and then we pull a name and that person gets (the item). It was a big hit last year; everyone liked it.” Essick said that the fellowship group

Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a Christian women’s group that meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, will begin its 33rd year on Tuesday, Sept. 17, with a program from 9:15 to 11 a.m. The theme of the first meeting will be “Come and Meet the Women of the Bible.” The opening meeting will feature a program and a time for fellowship, as well as snacks and beverages. “We’re going to be featuring three women from the Bible; we will have a skit about the different women’s lives,” explained Tina Essick, program chair. “We will also play a getto-know-you game and then (enjoy) food from Bible times like olives, figs and grapes and dipping oil with bread.” Meetings will continue each Tuesday from 9:15 to 11 a.m. through April 14, 2020, with a break during the Christmas holiday. There will also be three field trips scheduled by the group in April, May and June of next year. Each meeting begins with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meet-
ing, children enjoy stories, crafts and ageappropriate activities under the supervision of a teacher. Snacks are provided. All programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting registration is required, and a small fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies. This will be the case on Oct. 1, when the focus of the meeting will be “Make a Succulent Pumpkin.” Attendees will be asked to bring their own pumpkins. “We will clean out the pumpkin, take out the seeds and put in a flower arrangement in the pumpkin,” Essick explained. “You can use it as a centerpiece for your table or outside your door. The plants will be included in the fee. “ The group has also planned several outings. “We’re going off-site to do projects, visit a nursing home and do a service day,” said Essick, noting that the group will visit the Zerbe Retirement Community on Nov. 19. “We will be doing a craft with the residents.” Last year, the group hosted a speaker from GAiN (Global Aid Network), a nonprofit organization that ships humanitarian aid packages to people in need throughout the world. This year, the

Steve Loewen from pg 1 Summer Fest celebration, and the Christmas on Main committee. Along with Mitch Dissinger, he founded the New Holland Area Historical Society, and he was a member of the board that created the New Holland Recreation Center, now the YMCA at New Holland. “I learned so much from Ed Beck, Dale Weaver, and Fred Musselman,” said Loewen of the three area residents who together initiated that effort. Loewen sometimes ponders whether he would have been as community-minded as he is had his life not been touched by tragedy. Loewen and his family were involved in a head-on crash on a sharp curve on East Earl Road in March of 1976. His mother, Louise, was killed in the incident. “I was in the hospital for six months,” recalled Loewen, who was left paralyzed with only limited use of his arms. He uses a motorized wheelchair, and Ralph
Hess has served as his personal care assistant for the last three years. Prior to that, Dave Maclay cared for him for many years. According to Loewen, prior to the accident, he was an “average high school kid.” “I was accepted to go to Penn State for engineering,” he said, “but this was in 1976, when there were no accommodations for wheelchairs.” After a six-month hospital stay, Loewen knew he needed a purpose. “Citizens band (CB) radios were big, and I was into them,” recalled Loewen, who bought a small CB store on South Railroad Avenue and began operating it in October 1977. He is currently the owner of the New Holland Radio Shack on Main Street. Running the business was not enough, however. “My grandfather (Wayne Ranck) was extremely active in town,” said Loewen, who added that Ranck taught

St. John Center Lutheran Church, 599 Reading Road, East Earl, will host an old-fashioned hymn sing on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. The event is part of the church’s 200th anniversary Celebration Concert Series, and it is open to the community. The organists and combined choirs from St. John Center, Mellinger’s and Muddy Creek
him the importance of community traditions. Loewen’s father, Art, was known for announcing at local sports events. Loewen was asked to call the New Holland Farm Show parade, and he began doing so with the fall 1977 parade. He called the parade for more than 30 years. On the 1981 Memorial Day Pilgrimage, Loewen was with members of the New Holland Band when he suggested to George Weaver that he and Weaver hold an antique car show in New Holland the following year. “I picked the second Sunday of July because there were a lot of car shows in the area, and that was the about the only open weekend,” said Loewen, who just wrapped up the show’s 38th year. He began helping others to organize similar events and has now been involved in more than 60 shows. Among those he helped was Bill Corwin, who wanted to organize a car show in Terre Hill. Later, when Corwin became the
race director for Kendall Motor Sports, he invited Loewen to the track, where he became friends with drag racer Frank Manzo. By 1992, Loewen’s name was emblazoned on Manzo’s car. “I really clicked with Manzo and the crew, and I had a blast,” said Loewen, who was there when Manzo won 15 of his 17 World Drag Racing Championships. In early 2007, local property owner Scott Monger approached

Loewen about purchasing part of the Kauffman Building. Loewen’s family has been in New Holland since 1728, and as a founder of the historical society, Loewen was interested in using part of the building as a museum. “We put the museum upstairs and the income-generating units on the bottom floor,” said Loewen, who added that his vision for the New Holland Area Historical Society Museum was brought to life with
help from a number of community members, including Wilbur Horning, Don Welsh, Don Horning, Bill Seitzinger, and Brian Frankhouser. Looking ahead, Loewen has teamed up with Allison Cuthie to enhance the Memorial Day program in the New Holland Memorial Community Park that follows the annual pilgrimage. “Tradition should be perpetuated and continue on,” noted Loewen.

The Lancaster County Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. in the fellowship hall in the Village Center Building at Brethren Village Retirement Community, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz. People may visit with representatives of 30 nonprofits that are providing life-changing benefits to people in both local and global contexts. Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things,
make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” The fair serves as a strong community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. One of the new participants in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the community with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase in-home dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an opportunity to use their existing skills to make a supplemental

scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, celebrated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an
alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact (yoga) can have on people, so we want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. The Eagles had seven corners to the Spartans’ five. “I thought she played well,” head coach Katy Eby commented on Kelly’s goalkeeping. “The one goal was not her fault. They were able to capitalize on a corner.” As for the play of this defensiveminded game, Eby said, “We played a lot between the 25’s. With the heavy load of players who graduated last year, we are still feeling our way around. We have a lot of new players for our starting lineup.” Of this new group of players, the offense clicked in the season opener - a non-league contest at home against Conrad Weiser on Friday, August 30. The Spartans tallied 14 shots on goal. While Kelly manned the cage for Garden Spot, recording six saves on the day, Amanda Leeland led the offense with two goals in this 3-1 victory. Both of her goals came in the second half, breaking a 1-1 tie. “It was a great game against Conrad Weiser,” Eby said. “I was really excited to see several people involved in our scoring. Amanda had a great game, scoring one of those goals on a corner.” Melanie Esh scored the Spartans’ first-half goal while Lauren Esh, Giovanna Poehler, and Erin Gonzalez each recorded one assist. “Melanie Esh is a ninth-grader coming in and starting for varsity,” Eby pointed out. As for the group of new players, Eby isn’t calling this a rebuilding

In addition, Conor Adams ran back a punt 60 yards to cap the scoring for the Warriors. John Dykie’s two-yard rushing TD and Jesse Martin’s 35-yard touchdown toss to Ethan Good accounted for Garden Spot’s points in the non-league home game on Friday, August 30. Martin did finish with 11 completions for 162 yards and that TD to Good. He also ran for 63 yards while Dykie churned up 108 yards of real estate on 26 carries for Spot. Martin was the leading rusher in the season opener, gaining 121 yards on 12 carries while also completing eight passes for 90 yards and touchdown to Good. It was the first score of the season for this Spartan group. Dykie pushed across the goal line from a yard out for the other score. He finished with 28 rushing yards and caught three short passes for a total of 10 as the Blazers came back to beat the Spartans 20-14. FIELD HOCKEY Hanna Custer’s goal at the 20:35 mark of the game spoiled a great defensive effort by the Garden Spot field hockey team on Thursday as Cocalico posted a 1-0 Section Two victory. It was the first league game played by either side as the visiting Spartans fell to 1-1 overall and the Eagles improved to 3-0. In the low-scoring game, each

School Announces Campaign Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster, has announced the public phase of its “Raise the Curtain!” capital campaign to fund the creation of a fully equipped theater on its campus in Lancaster. The family of the late Eugene H. Gardner Sr. has pledged a leadership gift of $5 million toward the enterprise. In honor of his contributions, the facility will be named Gardner Theatre. A ceremonial groundbreaking will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Country Day campus. The new performance space will provide an enhanced arts facility for its students as well as substantial performance resources for the broader regional community. The school’s existing 250-seat Steinman Theatre will be retained and repurposed for rehearsals and black-box performances. Gardner Theatre will have 580 seats and will feature an orchestra pit, state-of-the-art lighting and acoustics, fly space, and a full-size stage. The dimensions of the new theater and its professional-level fittings will allow for enhanced orchestral, vocal, and dramatic productions. For more information, readers may contact Michael Schwartz at 717-392-2916, ext. 232, or schwartzm@lancastercountry day.org.

On the platform, supporters can challenge friends and family with a virtual food drive on an interactive website that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for families, veterans, and seniors. Readers may learn more or make a donation at www.centralpafoodbank.org/psecu. September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness and encourage action to help end hunger. During the month, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) is partnering with its Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor, PSECU, to host events, awards, and a virtual food drive initiative to highlight the issue of hunger in the area and to spur community action. Through the collaboration, now in its third consecutive year, PSECU will contribute up to $20,000 to the cause and encourage its members living in CPFB’s 27-county region to donate. In conjunction with Hunger Action Month, the CPFB will host its annual Hunger Heroes Awards at the annual Hunger Action
each dollar donated to the food bank equates to six meals, so PSECU’s donation could provide up to 120,000 meals for those in need. Additionally, the credit union will continue promoting ways families can use effective budgeting to make healthy food choices, highlighting hunger issues on college campuses, and volunteering at the food bank. CPFB is one of 200 food bank members of Feeding America, which serves every county in the United States and provides more than three billion meals each year to Americans in need. To learn more about hunger and Hunger Action Month events, activities, and ways to get involved, readers may visit www.centralpafoodbank.org/ham.
