CrossNet schedules Columbus Day coat giveaway
BY ANN MEAD ASHLisa
Kerstetter, community events manager with CrossNet Ministries, knows what she needs to make this year’s Coat Giveaway event a success. “We gave away more than 300 coats last year,” Kerstetter stated. “I want to have at least 350 to give away (in 2023).” Kerstetter is well aware that keeping the children of ELANCO School District warm this winter is a project that requires volunteers and donors. “The success of the program relies on the community,” she noted, adding that there are multiple ways to take part. Area residents may volunteer to help set up during the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 8, or help at the giveaway on the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 9. “It’s always on Columbus Day,” commented Kerstetter of the event, which will take place at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. This year’s giveaway, which will be held from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m., will serve infants through seniors in high school within the ELANCO School District whose families participate in free and reduced-cost lunch programs. Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, will be required.
In addition to volunteers, CrossNet needs help to gather the necessary

items. CrossNet will accept new and gently used coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. Toiletries will also be collected at CrossNet’s offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, through Thursday, Oct. 5. Donors who bring a brand-new coat to contribute to the drive will be entered to win a $50 gift card. The gift card drawing will be held following the end of the drive. For
those who prefer internet shopping, Kerstetter has set up an Amazon wishlist, which can be accessed through www.elancocross.org. She also encourages individuals and groups to organize coat drives. Financial donations are also welcome. Leftover coats and other winter clothing will be disbursed as specific needs come up in the district. Donated coats should be designed to keep children warm in weather that is 40 degrees or below. Kerstetter noted that there are two special needs that stand out this year. First, she would like to be able to offer more winter boots to children. Second, she is looking for coats that would be appreciated by high school students. “While we need coats for all ages, we are specifically looking for warm athletic wear for older teens,” she said. Toiletries that Kerstetter especially needs for the giveaway include toothbrushes and toothpaste and deodorant, which are gathered into goodie bags to be handed out.

Looking back at 175 years of faith
BY ANN MEAD ASH“Anybody is welcome to come,” said Jim Griel, former pastor of the Mount Airy Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church, of the church’s upcoming 175th anniversary celebration. Mount Airy, located at 480 Springville Road, New Holland, will hold a special service to commemorate the event on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m.
The service will include special music. “Two of my grandchildren will play, and three of us will sing,” said Griel, who added that Randy Sizemore, bishop for the International Conference Evangelical Congregational Churches, will speak. Current pastor Philip Walck said that Griel will read the roll call of See Mount Airy Church pg 3
Helping Lancaster County’s children to thrive
BY ANN MEAD ASHOcean Smith, family engagement specialist with Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County, began her career in the area as a home visitor with the Parents as Teachers program in the ELANCO School District. In January, she was promoted to her present position, where she facilitates and coordinates events for families involved in the program throughout the county. Smith also continues to work with families in ELANCO with whom she was engaged as a home visitor prior
to her promotion. “Enrollment age for the Parents as Teachers is for children 2 and under and prenatal, but we walk alongside them until they enter kindergarten,” explained Smith.
“My role is split between having a caseload and doing those events for the entire team,” said Smith, who has an office at 1770 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, but also works out of CrossNet Ministries in New Holland as necessary while she continues to serve ELANCO in a limited capacity. In her role, Smith works with Thrive to Five, the education and See Thrive to Five pg 2

development aspect of CAP. “Thrive to Five encompasses the home visiting of Parents as Teachers and Head Start home visiting,” said Smith.
“There are also classroom programs such as Head Start and Pre-K Counts,” she noted, adding a nature area for children is located at the CAP offices at 601 S. Queen St., Lancaster.
Some programs Smith works with are offered virtually. “We collaborate with WIC to provide a virtual family cooking series, and we do kindergarten readiness to help prepare families entering kindergarten, so it’s a warm handoff to their district,” she said, adding that the virtual format makes it easier for families to take part in an evening session where they can review the process of kindergarten transition and to get answers to specific questions.
The program also offers Play and Learns, which usu-
ally include up to eight sessions. “Play and Learns are where families can get together to engage in school readiness and relationshipbuilding activities,” said Smith. “We have materials available for all ages.” In New Holland, these are held in the Trinity Lutheran Church and in Manheim Township at the Manheim Township Public Library, but Smith noted that team members hold them in other districts, and that information about locations is available by registering for a newsletter at https://bit.ly/TTFEvent NewsletterReg. Smith noted that smaller events include Park Playdates and a STEM series.
“Thrive to Five is a CAP pillar,” said Smith, who noted that the early education piece includes a number of programs, which are detailed at https://caplanc.org/ under “Early Education.”

former pastors and give a brief history of the church from a booklet Griel has prepared. The booklet, along with a special commemorative bookmark, will be distributed to attendees, and a fellowship meal will be held following the service. Members of Pequea Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, which was planted by Mount Airy members 145 years ago, will attend the service.
Griel, who served as pastor of the church from 1989 to 1997, said that Mount Airy has its origins with Jacob Albright. “(Albright) was an evangelistic itinerant pastor who broke away from the Methodist Church over German language,” said Griel, who explained that the Methodist Church in the 1790s insisted that Albright preach in English, but

Albright wanted to reach German-speaking people.
Eventually, Albright began riding into the Welsh Mountains to a small community known as Mouth Airy. Walck noted that in Albright’s time it was common for preachers to ride a circuit preaching in small towns. “Someone would get saved, and they would start a house church (in that area),” he explained. “A lot of the small churches (were built) and never grew more than what you see right here with Mount Airy.”
“In 1848, three men purchased this tract of land for a church for $10 from Nicholas and Catherine Harting,” said Griel, adding that during 1848 and 1849, William Lafferty, who was a professional stone mason and member of the congregation, built the church for a remuneration of $1 a day.
Griel recalled older church members telling him about the attendance at the church nearly 100 years ago. “In the 1930s and ’40s, this church was so full that people would sit on the windowsills during Sunday morning services,” he said, adding that currently, the church can hold about 110 people.

“Rhapsody in Blue” concert planned
The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), led by music director Michael Butterman, will kick off its 77th season with a program featuring George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. A free pre-concert lecture will
begin 45 minutes before each performance. The concerts will be held at the LSO’s new home, the Gardner Theatre within Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.
The concert’s theme centers around rhythm in music and showcases how composers can combine different genres to expand the world of classical music. The LSO will welcome Cuban pianist and composer
Aldo López-Gavilán, who will also perform his original composition “Emporium,” which blends classical and jazz sounds. The program will also include music by Jessie Montgomery and Alberto Ginastera, both of whom find ways to inject new rhythms and culture into their music.
To further celebrate its inaugural season in a new home, the LSO invites all audience members to gather
in the theater’s grand lobby after each performance for drinks, refreshments, silent auctions, and a chance to meet Butterman, LópezGavilán, and the musicians of the LSO.
Free parking is available onsite. Tickets range in price and can be purchased by calling the LSO box office at 717-291-6440 or visiting www.lancastersymphony.org/ rhapsody-in-blue.

Poole Forge Day to offer family fun
BY FRANCINE FULTON“It’s a popular community event,” said Poole Forge executive director Dawn Ekdahl when describing the annual celebration of Poole Forge Day. “One of my favorite parts is that local community members and neighbors come out. It’s a big social get-together.”
This year’s Poole Forge Day, featuring children’s activities, food, crafts, live music, goat races, a volleyball tournament and more, will take place at Historic Poole Forge on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
The event will begin at the picnic pavilion, where there will be a presentation by the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. Also in the pavilion, children will be able to create twig art using items from nature. “There will be a reptile display and beekeeper display in the pavilion in addition to the arts and crafts,” Ekdahl noted.
The popular goat races, where goat owners guide their goats through a specified course, will take place beginning at 2:30 p.m. “The
goat has to lead. The handler cannot lead the goat,” Ekdahl explained. “That’s what makes it funny. When the goats take off, they really go.” There will also be a turtle race at 3:30 p.m. Visitors who “purchase” green rubber turtles that will float down the Conestoga Creek will be in the running for prizes. The first turtle across the line will get the grand prize noted. There will also be smaller prizes for the other top finishers.
An Amish youth volleyball tournament will take place in the ballfield and meadow across the creek. “They play from morning to dark. It’s a daylong tournament,” Ekdahl said. “(Players) are coming from over all Pennsylvania, from a number of different counties. It’s become a popular location for a tournament.”
The Penn’s Woods Puppet Theater will present three
shows of “Rumpelstiltskin” throughout the course of the day, and there will be barrel train rides for children. Other activities will include hayrides around the Poole Forge property; a display of military vehicles; a silent auction, with goods and gift certificates donated by local businesses; a pet and pony cart parade; and demonstrations by the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild.
The 18th-century Welsh
ironmaster’s mansion will be open for self-guided tours, and live music will be offered on the mansion porch. Offering food and beverages will be the Farmhouse Stickys food truck, Jacquelyn’s Frituras Paradise and Father and Son Barbecue. Poole Forge will offer soft ice cream and smoothies, and the Caernarvon Ladies’ Auxiliary Food Wagon will be on-site.
The day will end with an airplane candy drop, weather permitting, by Wilmer Zimmerman, who will also do aerial stunts in the ultralight that he pilots. “It’s a great way to end the day. The kids are so excited for it,” Ekdahl added.
Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon (Churchtown), 7 miles east of New Holland and 5 miles west of Morgantown. For more information and a detailed schedule of Poole Forge Day events, visit www.historicpooleforge.org or www.facebook.com/ pooleforge.

Building good habits through biking
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen youths are riding bikes as part of Lifecycles, they are doing much more than getting some exercise.
As Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer explained, neurological research has emerged in the past few years showing that when you challenge yourself to do hard things and you complete them, you can actually change the way your brain works.
“It’s about a creating a set of habits that says, ‘I can do this,’ instead of, ‘I think that’s too hard,’” Lee shared.
Forty-three teens experienced what it’s like to “do hard things,” the motto of Lifecycles, when they participated in Challenge Rides this summer. One team rode 320 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Washington, D.C., while another team rode 535 miles from Portland, Maine, to Valley Forge. Three other teams completed a 380-mile journey around Lake Champlain and Lake George on the border of New York and Vermont.
“They all did very well on the rides,” Lee said. “They dealt with fatigue, rain and heat, but they pushed through, and they all came back very proud of themselves.”
Lifecycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18, and all equipment and programming is provided free of charge.
“There are no tryouts,” Lee commented. “Anyone who wants to join can join.” Participants do not need to be experienced bike riders, he noted, adding that youths are placed in a group based on their skill level.
Lifecycles has a mission of building young men and women of character. “We do it through long-distance cycling,” Lee remarked. “We invest in the kids, and we provide a faith-based curriculum, one for the girls and one for the boys. The program is all about outdoor adventure and
building self-confidence.”
He noted that the lessons learned in Lifecycles can be applied to school, work and

The guest speaker will be comedian Gordon Douglas, who started his comedy career in Philadelphia in the 1970s and went on to Hollywood to appear on numerous television and radio programs. He now travels all over the world sharing his program of love and laughter.
Douglas has also started Operation Bellylaughs, sending comedy tapes and DVDs to men and women serving in the military.

life outside of biking. “You build a habit pattern that has a bit of a courage and a confidence aspect to it, instead of setting your goals so low because you’re afraid of failure,” he explained. “This is a positive and encouraging environment where boys and girls can discover more of their gifts, growing into the person they were created to become.”
This season of Lifecycles will wrap up in mid-October, and the new season will begin next April. The program is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. For more information, visit www.life cyclesteam.org or call 717-586-2511.

BY ANN MEAD ASHAccording to Jennifer Rummel, the horse show held by Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), an organization that provides equine-assisted therapeutic activities to individuals with special needs, is mainly about inclusivity. “It’s a community event, and we encourage people to come (join us),” said Rummel. “Parents of children with special needs will tell you their children are excluded from a lot of things, but this is their event, and it’s wonderful when the community comes out and cheers them on.”

Titled, “Eventing Extravaganza - an Equestrian Triathlon,” the show will include students demonstrating their achievements, a skilled horsemanship demonstration around noon, and food available by donation. skills and receive a ribbon. “There’s a proficiency element,” explained Rummel. “Classes are based on ability.” Rummel noted that students with limited core strength need help sitting on the horse and guiding the horse, but others are able to trot independently, so categories are arranged accordingly. In addition to performing for an audience, students spend time with other students at the event.
“Most (lessons) are individual because (each student’s) needs are so unique,” Rummel explained. “So, (the show is) an opportunity for students to spend time with each other.” The skilled performance will include a rider demonstrating dressage and jumping.
The event will include a fundraiser tied to fall-themed planters located around the arena and the entrance. Rummel explained that a GMTRC board member obtains the planters. “She decorates, and it looks beautiful,” said Rummel.
“Each one has a tag in it, and
people can take the tag and buy the planter and then take it home,” said Rummel, who noted that in 2022, the planter fundraiser brought in more than $1,500. Food that will be available by donation includes hot dogs, pizza, baked goods, and beverages.
GMTRC stables 10 therapeutic horses with two more in training and offers classes to both children and adults with special needs or in other at-
risk populations. A Silver Saddles program is also available for active seniors. Rummel is excited about a new program that will start in October. Heroes and Horses is a nocost, unmounted equineassisted intervention for frontline workers and first responders who have experienced mental health issues following COVID-19.
Rummel noted that the program is constantly looking for

Stair climb will honor fallen first responders
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDLancaster County’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up, and registration will also be available online at www.lancasterstairclimb.org until Friday, Sept. 15.
Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the stadium. They will circle the stadium five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. During the climb, each participant will carry an image or the
badge of a first responder who was killed while responding to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Every year, many first responders travel to the Barnstormers’ stadium to participate in the event.
Firefighters often choose to don their full set of equipment for the climb, carrying the same type of heavy gear that their fallen comrades did as they rescued those trapped in the twin towers. In the past, the event has drawn first responders from across the entire county, as well as firefighters and emergency personnel from New York, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey. “We have guys from outside of the state who only see each other at the stair climb every year.
It’s a common bond for peo-
ple,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “They swap stories and catch up. Firefighters already have a bond with each other, but the memorial makes that stronger.”
Similar memorial events are held throughout the country in almost every state, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in
the region. The proceeds from the Lancaster event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who helped with rescue efforts continue to receive counseling over two decades after the attacks.
Yuill helped to establish the annual stair climb in Lancaster 13 years ago as a way to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Pucca. Yuill and Pucca met at a training program in New York, and Pucca was one of the city’s fire marshals who was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. Members of the community, especially first responders, immediate-

ly rallied in support of the memorial.
“The memorial gives people a unique way to show that they haven’t forgotten, like everyone promised in the days after 9/11,” Yuill said. “Even the younger generations participate, despite being babies when it happened. They know that it’s about honor and sacrifice, and they honor that.”
