The New Holland Farmers Fair is an event steeped in tradition, yet it is new and different each year. This year, the Farmers Day Association, which organizes the fair, is celebrating the 90th event, and the directors have made some changes to keep things exciting.The2022 New Holland Fair will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 28, through Saturday, Oct. 1, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. The fair will kick off on Sept. 28 with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. The fair will feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, a long john eating contest, pet and baby parades, games, and a variety of food vendors. Fair president Paulene Redding has been handling the parade for many years. In 2021, she changed the lineup based on requests from high school bands that travel to take part. This year, Redding has designated specially priced sponsorships for Division 1 of the parade to help cover the costs of upgrades to the association’s building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street. Those wishing to help with this effort may call 717-354-5880.
New this year will be nightly entertainment on a stage at the corner of Main Street and Custer Avenue. The Kracker Beez will play on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Jess Zimmerman Band will perform on Friday, Sept. 30, and Josh Squared Band will take to the stage on Oct. 1. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s really good quality entertainment,” said Kristie Overly, who handles premiums for the fair. This year New Holland will select a fair queen to send to the state competition. The crowning of the queen will take place at the Farmers Fair building on Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. Queen candidates must be exhibiting something in the farm show, and the queen will be judged based on a personal interview, knowledge and experience of New Holland Fair, a presentation about the New Holland Fair, a written

BY ANN MEAD ASH Just prior to March 19, Svitlana Shekh, living in the Donetsk region of Ukraine with her two young daughters, made the decision to leave. The war was intensifying. “Every night Russian fighter jets flew overhead,” she recalled. “We had spare clothing next to us (as we slept), so we could pick up and leave any minute.” On March 19, Svitlana drove the three to the Russian border. Donetsk has been under Russian occupation since 2014. The Shekhs crossed the Russian border and drove more than 1,500 miles north to the Latvian border, where Svitlana was advised to think hard about crossing because she would not be allowed to return. Svitlana’s husband, David, was waiting for her in Latvia, and she chose to go. David had been working in Germany as a ceramic tile installer. From Latvia, the family drove more than 1,200 miles to Germany, and from there they were able to fly to Boston, landing on June 3. The Shekhs came as part of a group of five families, but there are many more who want to leave Ukraine or are internally displaced persons and in need of help, according to Konstantin Reznik, a member of Bethany Slavik Church in Ephrata. The church has organized the Refugee Welcome Fundraising Dinner, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Ephrata Business Center, 400 W. Main St., at 6 p.m. The meal will feature refugees sharing their stories and opportunities for attendees to sponsor families for housing, food, and transportation. Homemade foods that will be served will include borscht, katleti, and galupsi. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be obtained www.bethanyslavic.org/eventsat

Svitlana and David have avoided talking about the war in front of their children, but the situation did not go unnoticed by oldest daughter Nikol. While looking at a possible home in Ephrata, Nikol noticed the size of the basement. “Look how big the basement is,” she told her father. “It’s a great place to hide from the bombs.” “We tried to limit their exposure, but they still pick up (things),” said David, who noted the conversation brought tears to his eyes. The Shekhs speak to family members in Ukraine daily. The current situation there is a stark contrast to the Shekhs’ new life in Ephrata. “There’s no public water,” translated Reznik, who noted that water is available twice a week for a few hours at a time. “You will not see any civilian men on the street,” Reznik said. “If a man walks outside, he will be conscripted to (serve on) the frontlines.” Most businesses are closed because there are no men to work. Women drive taxis or sell produce to support their families. Before Svitlana left, she and her mother took over her father’s meat deliveries because he could not go outside.

One of the most popular meetings is “My Favorite Things,” which will be held on May 2, 2023. Attendees are asked to bring three different items valued at less than $5 to share with the group, such as a homemade food or a book. “It’s so much fun, and it’s a way to get to know people,” Blair said. “Last year, I brought a few clips from a plant. It should be something you have on hand.”

taking part in recent years. The 2022 New Holland/Leola CROP Walk will begin at the New Holland Memorial Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Sunday, Oct. 16. The walk will leave the Rotary Pavilion at 1:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the park at 1 p.m. to complete the registration process. They may walk up to 3 miles following a route through Garden Spot Village (GSV). Several local churches will take part in this year’s event, including Cedar Grove, Ranck’s United Methodist, St. John Center Lutheran, the Community Church at Garden Spot Village, and Trinity Lutheran, all in New Holland, as well as Leola United Methodist and Zion Lutheran in Leola and Akron Mennonite Church in Akron. CROP Walks, which have been in existence nationwide for 53 years, are sponsored by Church World Service (CWS). According to CWS, CROP Walk funds help transform communities by bringing food and water to people in need in several countries. Funds raised by CROP help dig wells to provide water for drinking and agriculture. In some countries, people travel an average of 6 miles a day to obtain clean water. The availability of clean water is especially important because when individuals do not have to walk miles to obtain water, they can use the time to work, build a business, or take advantage of educational opportunities.ButCROPdoes not serve only those overseas. Local food pantries benefit by receiving 25% of the funds raised by the CROP Hunger Walk nearest them. In ELANCO, the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center in New Holland and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank in Terre Hill will both benefit. In the Conestoga Valley area, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) Food Pantry will receive funds. Last year’s New Hollandarea walk raised $8,300. This year, organizers hope to raise $10,000 locally. “Last year we were masked up (on the walk),” recalled Jonathan Barrett, executive director of CVCCS. “This year people are out again, and $10,000 is a goodAccordinggoal.” to walk organizer George Weaver, all a church needs to take part in the event is a few dedicated people. “The key is a coordinator and a supportive pastor,” said Weaver. Those who wish to become church recruiters may email pastorkris@frontier.com or call 717-354-5573.Information about the walk may be found at www.crop hungerwalk.org. BY ANN MEAD ASH Kim Mowery of Intercourse knew that the one-year anniversary of the day her husband, Dennis, died would not be easy. So, Kim took May 17, 2022, off from her job as assistant manager at New Hope Clothing Closet in Quarryville. Her neighbor and friend offered to spend the day with her. On a walk the two women took that day, both noticed a “for rent” sign in a building near where they lived. The shop at 3561 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, was available for a new business. The neighbor suggested Kim rent it. Kim learned who owned the building and asked questions. Learning that the rent was reasonable, Kim began to pray. Two days later, she decided to go ahead. “I had such peace about (the decision),” Kim recalled. She gave a lengthy notice at her place of employment, and by midJuly, she was able to devote herself full time to opening a newOnbusiness.Father’s Day this year, Kim’s children gathered at the building to help her paint and refurbish to prepare to open The Bees’ Needs Family Thrift & Collectibles, a store she hopes will be up and running by the end of September. Gathering items for the store has been an exercise in trust. “God has been connecting me to people,” said Kim, who has found new items through store overstock, such as socks, underwear, and curtains, and has attended auctions to bring other things to the store. “People I have known are spreading the word and giving me nice things,” said Kim, whose store will sell men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, and shoes for everyone, along with accessories, toys, books, household items, and collectibles. Kim is particular about what she will offer customers. “I want to sell quality items, so all the kid’s clothes are very gently used or new,” she said. “That is my goal,” she noted, adding that she hopes both local shoppers and visitors to the area will find items of interest in her store. The name The Bees’ Needs was based on Kim’s son Jared often remarking that something was the “bee’s knees.” Kim’s youngest daughter, Sarah June, nicknamed Junie Bee, succumbed to a brain tumor in 2008. Kim had seven bees, one to represent each of the children, carved into her husband’s gravestone. When Kim first searched the name, there were several businesses called The Bee’s Knees. Jared suggested she change it to The Bees’ Needs, which worked better for a thrift shop. Mowery also intends to give back to local organizations, setting aside certain pieces of men’s clothing for Restart Training Center Ministries. She also she hopes to spotlight area nonprofits using a register feature that allows customers to round up to the next dollar as a donation. Another goal Mowery has set is to use her faith to uplift customers. “I want to be able to share Jesus in such a way that people want to come back because they have peace just walking in the door,” said Mowery. “When God shared this opportunity with me, I didn’t see dollar signs; I saw an opportunity to share His testimonies.”Mowerysaid a few maintenance issues have delayed opening the shop, but she hopes to be seeing customers by the end of September. Readers who want to learn more may search for “The Bees’ Needs Family Thrift” on Facebook.

FIELD HOCKEY Lacey McCalicher’s goal at the 10:50 mark of the first period came off a Lauren Horning assist. It was the only offense the Spartans needed to defeat Conrad Weiser 1-0 on Tuesday, September 6. The shutout by goalie Kacey Miller improved the team’s record to 3-1-0“Kacey Miller is our new starting goalie after the graduation of our two goalies last year,” head coach Katy Eby pointed out. “This year we’re excited to see a large group of returning seniors,” she added. “Lauren Horning, Lacey McCalicher and Melanie Esh are the captains.”TheSpartans’ prior match was an overtime victory over Cedar Crest on September 2. After Esh had given Spot a 1-0 lead in the third quarter, the Falcons pulled even in the fourth, sending the game into extra time.“It was a stressful game going into overtime,” Eby said. “We dominated possession for most of the game but could not find the back of the net. Their goalie Hailey Newmaster played a great game.” Morgan Watt was able to get a shot past Newmaster for the gamewinning goal in overtime.

Spot Defeats Cedars 46-14 on the Gridiron
When your football team does well offensively and defensively, you have a good chance of winning theWhengame.the team scores touchdowns on offense and defense, you certainly improve your chances. In their home game against Lebanon on Friday, September 2, the Garden Spot Spartans scored two first-quarter touchdowns thanks to Blake Weaver. The 5foot-11 senior put the Spartans on the board as he caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Kye Harting. Later in the first quarter, he picked off an Emanuel Mason pass and returned it 22 yards to give Garden Spot a 12-0 lead. The Spartans (2-0) defeated the Cedars 46-14 victory as Harting threw for 248 yards and four touchdowns. He connected with Zac Nagle six times for 99 of those 248 yards, including a 55-yard score in the third quarter. “Kye was able to complete passes to eight different receivers,” noted head coach Matt Zamperini. “Zac Nagle is our top receiver, but there are other quality kids we can throw the ball to. This puts defenses in a bind.”Weaver, who also had a rushing touchdown, caught six passes for 63 yards. He also carried the ball six times for 23 yards and a six-yard TD. The array of pass catchers also included Diego Portales, whose 11yard touchdown reception capped the scoring for the night. Trenton Hoober also had an 11-yard TD reception plus 34 rushing yards on twoThecarries.Cedars scored on two big plays. In the first quarter, Mason broke into the open and dashed 57 yards for a touchdown. The twopoint conversion cut the Spot lead to 12-8 going into the second period. Mason connected with Paul Trace on an 80-yard scoring pass in that second stanza. “The Lebanon game had sloppy play on both sides,” Zamperini said. “We were able to score a lot and bend a little but not break on defense.”

specialist in the U.S. “Infusions and treatments will give her a chance to live a more normal life,” said Ashley, who noted she is working to form a nonprofit organization to raise funds for other children who need CRMO treatment. “This is so rare,” said Ashley. “Every year, we plan to do a ride, but it may be (to raise funds) for another child. We are trying to help the families who need (help) with expenses.”Theplanned motorcycle ride will take a scenic route. “It’s prettier with the fall foliage coming out,” said Ashley, who noted Amijah enjoys the beauty of nature. “She likes pretty stuff. She will point out a pretty sunset to me,” said Ashley. Part of the ride will be a stop at The Udder Choice in Ephrata. “We will have a little surprise for her during the ride,” said Ashley. “Udder Choice will open up for us to come for ice cream.” Ashley said that Amijah and her brother will arrive in separate cars donated by BDR Automotive of New Holland, where they will meet up with the motorcyclists. Back at the Elks Lodge following the ride, a meal at the pavilion will include hot dogs, broasted chicken from Bright’s restaurant, chips, salad, and baked beans.
