Communities unite to fight hunger
BY ANN MEAD ASH“There’shunger everywhere,” said Cheryl Zook Justice, CROP Walk recruiter for Akron Mennonite Church. “We like that CROP (provides funds) both locally and globally.” Justice added that members of Akron Mennonite are very involved with service agencies that provide food and housing, so it makes sense to take part in CROP. “We heavily encourage youth to participate,” added Justice. “It’s tangible.”
Akron community members have banded together with individuals from the Conestoga Valley area and the ELANCO area to take part in the 46th New Holland/Leola CROP Walk, which will take place at the New Holland Memorial Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Sunday, Oct. 15. The walk will leave the Rotary Pavilion at 1:30 p.m. Participants are asked to meet at the park at 1 p.m. to complete the registration process. They may walk up to 3 miles following a route
Healthier homes
BY ANN MEAD ASHResponding to the elevated levels of lead in the blood of children in Lancaster County, Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) - part of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health - began offering Lead-Free Families, a program aimed at eliminating the threat of lead in homes in the county.
Out of the Lead-Free Families program grew a new program called Healthy Homes. “Lead-Free Families was all about addressing lead hazards in properties in Lancaster County,” explained Marisol Maldonado, manager of the
Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. “We quickly realized these homes had other needs outside of lead hazards.” Those needs included missing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, a lack of railings and grab rails, and leaking roofs. “We realized if we address the chipping and peeling paint, the roof leak will just destroy what we have done,” noted Maldonado, who soon was looking for ways to help address other hazards in area homes.
Working with the grants office at LGH, Lead-Free Families applied for a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant to fund Healthy Homes. The three-year grant of $2 million to See Homes pg 6
through Garden Spot Village (GSV). In addition to Akron Mennonite, local churches that take part include Cedar Grove Presbyterian, Ranck’s United Methodist, St. John Center Lutheran, the Community Church at Garden Spot Village, and Trinity Lutheran, all in the ELANCO area, as well as Leola United Methodist Church (LUMC) and Zion Lutheran in Leola.
“We
CROP Walks, which have been in existence nationwide for more than 50 years, are sponsored by Church World Service (CWS). According to CWS, CROP Walk funds help transform communities by bringing food and water to people in need in several countries. Funds raised by CROP help dig wells to provide water for drinking and agriculture. In some countries, people travel an average of 6 miles a day to
obtain clean water. The availability of clean water is especially important because when individuals do not have to walk miles to obtain water, they can use the time to work, build a business, or take advantage of educational opportunities.
But CROP does not serve only those overseas. Local food pantries benefit by receiving 25% of the funds raised by the CROP Hunger Walk nearest them. In ELANCO, the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center in New Holland received $500 in 2022, and the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank in Terre Hill also received funds. In the Conestoga Valley area, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) Food Bank received nearly $1,300 last year.
Krisana Poontajak, pastor of Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church and one of the organizers of the New Holland/Leola CROP Walk, said that each year the goal is to raise $10,000. Last year, $7,300 was raised, and in 2021, the event brought in $8,000.

Six years of celebrating recovery
BY ANN MEAD ASHThe ELANCO-area Celebrate Recovery (CR) - a 12-step, Christcentered discipleship recovery program for individuals age 18 and up that has met from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland - has not changed much over the six years it has been active. According to leaders Carol Musser and Karl Stoltzfus, that is the way it should be.
“What we do here is consistent,” said Musser.
Stoltzfus agreed, saying, “They strive for that. There’s a familiarity to what we do. Each CR has its own

LDHL awards loans
Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) recently awarded interest-free loans to 345 Lancaster County students to offset the cost of their postsecondary education for the 2023-24 school year. LDHL awarded 338 loans of $1,900 each for a full academic year and seven loans of $950 each for students attending one semester only to applicants who demonstrated financial need. The loans will be applied to tuition expenses at 113 colleges and universities across the country.
Since 1961, LDHL has provided more than $19 million in interest-free loans to Lancaster
County students. These loans are made possible by community donations and repayments from previous loans recipients.
LDHL has been able to increase the number of loans provided over its history through the support of individuals and companies, including many past loan recipients and their parents. LDHL has experienced a growing number of Legacy-level donors - individuals, groups or organizations that have donated at the $10,000 level, either as a one-time donation or over several years. Of the 345 loans LDHL provided for the upcoming academic year, 36 were Legacy loans.
LDHL’s mission is to provide financial resources to Lancaster County residents in support of their postsecondary educational goals. To learn more, visit www.lancdollars.org or look for the organization’s pages on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.

seniors who have needs in their homes but do not necessarily have children living there. Mobile homes located on property owned by the home’s inhabitant may qualify.
Area residents can connect with Healthy Homes through local hubs such as CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, Together Initiative Network in Pequea Valley, or The Candy Factory in Lancaster city. Leaha Shermeyer, outreach coordinator for LeadFree Families, takes information about both programs to local organizations. “We want to let people know this is not just for families with children,” said Maldonado. “It can be for any home in Lancaster County where they are experiencing something that impacts the health of the family.”
“When we go in, we assess (the home for health and safety hazards),” explained Maldonado. If there are more hazards than Healthy Homes can address with HUD funds the hazards are prioritized. The issues that cannot be addressed by Healthy Homes are pointed out to homeowners, and they are educated about ways to remedy those.
Healthy Homes has set a goal of assisting 176 county homeowners over the life of the grant. “By 2024, we will apply again, so there will be no gap in services,” said Maldonado. Once an applicant is approved, it generally takes about four months to complete repairs. More information about the program may be found at https://tinyurl.com/2epzkr9x.

Women invited to join Neighbors group
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Neighbors group recently began its 37th year of offering a time of Christian fellowship for women during gatherings held at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown.
The year opened with a “Welcome Back Brunch” on Sept. 19, and the next scheduled meeting will be on Oct. 3 featuring speaker Liz Betz, who will present “Daring To Be Unique in Our ImageDriven World.”
Instead of meeting weekly as it has in years past, the Neighbors group will meet on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of the month from September through May.
The change was made to accommodate Conestoga Cubs, the church’s ministry for mothers of young children, which meets on the second Tuesday of the

Boots For The Whole Family
month.
“The second Tuesday is focused on women who have young children at home. They do an activity with their children and have fun together,” said Tina Essick, the program chair for Neighbors. “Some of the mothers who go to Cubs also go to Neighbors.”
Each Neighbors meeting begins with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and ageappropriate activities. Snacks are provided.
All programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required and a nominal fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies.
In addition to Betz, new Neighbors speakers this year include John Beitler, who will present “Enhancing the Joy of Birding in Your Backyard and Beyond” on Oct. 31.
“The felted soap craft led by Sue Sutter on Nov. 7 is also new,” Essick noted. “She has led us in previous crafts, and it has always been fun.”
A program about COBYS Family Services will be presented on Dec. 5 by speaker Anne Stokes. “COBYS is an organization that helps children find a home,” said Essick. “We are going to learn more about what they do.” She added that a freewill offering will be received for COBYS following the talk.
Also new is “Soup’s On!” on Jan. 16, 2024, where attendees will sample soups and share recipes.
The group also takes part in community service pro-

personality, but the materials are consistent.”
Offering a safe place for individuals dealing with addictions has been a goal of the program since it started. The group is still supported by Petra Church, Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, and Bethany Grace Fellowship. Each week, a hot meal is served beginning at 6:15 p.m., followed by worship, which usually includes a message or testimony, and small group meetings, which are divided by gender. The group currently meets on Thursdays, but it will begin meeting on Tuesdays effective Oct. 3.
During the second meeting of each month, a live worship band led by Randy Blank takes part. Blank said he is usually joined by three other musicians, but recently a vocalist has taken part as well. “We play worship songs - the same songs we would do on Sunday morning,” said Blank, who initially tried to recruit musicians, but soon learned that CR attendees were willing to play. “God brought the three musicians from among those who attend,” shared Blank.
On Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m., ELANCO CR will celebrate six years of serving the area with special guests Manny and Erika Garcia of Livingsong. The name of the ministry was chosen to express a daily goal of becoming a living song of worship displayed in a lifestyle representative of following Jesus. The mission of the ministry is to “proclaim the Gospel message to the least, the last, and the lost.” “They give testimonies and play music and give a message,” noted Musser.
CR marks landmarks of sobriety by giving out chips. Musser noted that some attendees will come to a meeting with several years of sobriety to mark. “We had one (participant) last year, and I had to make up a chip because they don’t have a 51-year chip,” she said. “It can be from one month to multiple years.” Musser noted that often a participant will give a testimony. “We love that,” she said. “They may not have been regular attendees, but it’s a recovery journey.”
CR continues to need volunteer help with the weekly meetings. Help is needed to facilitate, set up, tear down, and work with the audiovisual and sound components.
