“We
feed not only your body, but your soul,” said Deb Kuhn, who is active with the New Holland Church of the Nazarene’s King’s Closet ministry. Kuhn was referring to the outreach the church now holds on the first Saturday of each month, which provides food, clothing, and prayer to the community.
“People can get a food box if that is all they need,” explained senior pastor Frank Short. “But we (also) have a team that will pray with them. We hand out Bibles if that’s something they need, and we also provide breakfast.”
Kuhn and Short are enthusiastic about the monthly ministry the church, located at 428 Ranck Road, New Holland, began in June. By partnering with Blessings of Hope, the church has been able to distribute boxes of food to the community on the monthly outreach day. The next distribution will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, from
9 a.m. to noon. All families in the ELANCO area are welcome to participate. King’s Closet, a free clothing ministry, started opening those same hours on first Saturdays beginning Sept. 3.
“The boxes are put together at Blessings of Hope,” explained Short. Blessings of Hope, a ministry that stores and redistributes food that would otherwise have been wasted, provides boxes of food to be handed out. “It’s a mixture of perishable and nonperishable items,” said Short, who noted that the items arrive in a refrigerated truck for food safety purposes. “There could be bacon, a gallon of milk, pudding mix, bread.” Short pointed out that while not every box contains exactly the same items, a lot of the same components are present. The church has been giving away more than 200 of the 30- to 40-pound boxes each month since the ministry began. Recently, a prayer station, free baked goods, and breakfast, which in September included a breakfast wrap, have been added.

“(Discover Denver) started at the request of the community asking for things to do within the borough at a Visionary meeting,” reported Sandy Flory, one of the organizers of the event. Flory noted that the first Discover Denver day was held in 2018.
This year’s Discover Denver, which is designed to promote and encourage visits to local businesses and organizations, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, with a variety of activities taking place around town.

Karl Stoltzfus, one of the leaders of ELANCO Celebrate Recovery (CR), is clear about why many attendees come to the weekly meetings. “Some folks are here because a program (they are taking part in) says they need to be here,” he said. “Others get to a place where they want to try something different.”
Stoltzfus is just glad that attendees have made the choice to attend the 12-step, Christ-centered discipleship
recovery program for individuals age 18 and up. ELANCO CR meets from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each Thursday at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. “Honestly, I don’t care why they’re here,” Stoltzfus said. “We take the opportunity to make them feel welcomed and at home and comfortable.”
ELANCO CR celebrated its fifth anniversary in September. The group is still supported by Petra Church, Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, and Bethany Grace

King’s Closet occupies a house at 432 Ranck Road, right at the edge of the church parking lot. “We have clothing for the entire family,” said Kuhn. “(Everything) from maternity to plus sizes for men, women, and children, and everything is free.” As with the food distribution, no intake is necessary to receive clothing. The ministry also stocks shoes, personal care items, cleaning products, and diapers. If a client is in need of something the ministry does not have, representatives
will take a name and number and call the client when the item is available. Donations are accepted during the hours the ministry is open on Saturdays.

Fellowship. Each Thursday, a hot meal is served beginning at 6:15 p.m., followed by worship, which usually includes a message or testimony, and small group meetings, which are divided by gender. On the second Thursday of each month, a live worship band takes part.
Carol Musser, who leads the CR group with Stoltzfus, noted that there are misconceptions about the scope of the program. “One of the things we battle all the time is that people have this idea that CR is only for people who struggle with drugs and alcohol,” she said. “People who (attend) battle anger, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression, and they are having great success with the teachings and support here.” Musser noted that acceptance at the program is key. “We are all broken,” she said. “This is like a second family here.”
Likening the CR journey to training for a 5K, Musser said, “CR trains
you to do the long distance if that is where you heart is at.” She added that the support and encouragement of others sharing their stories can help an individual build confidence. “(Attendees think), ‘If they can do this for two years, I can do it for a month,’” explained Musser, who noted that a month can grow into years. “Before you know it, they are walking up to get their one-year chip, and we are cheering madly,” said Musser. At the Sept. 1 meeting, a few participants received chips for being free of nicotine for more than five years. Musser noted a celebra-
tion of 20 years of overcoming an issue was coming up soon. “We have some longevity,” she said. “It’s very important to keep track to realize and be grateful for God’s help in the journey.”
CR continues to need volunteer help with the weekly meetings. Help is needed to facilitate, set up, tear down, and work with the audiovisual and sound components.
Readers who would like to know more about ELANCO CR may call 717587-2202, email elancocelebrate recovery@gmail.com, or search for “ELANCO Celebrate Recovery” on Facebook.

The Gap Town Clock Association is preparing to celebrate an important milestone. “The last celebration was when the clock tower was 100 years old in 1992,” recalled Kathy Stern, secretary/treasurer for the association. Kathy explained that the clock dates back to 1872, but the 65-foot tower that holds the clock was built in 1892.
“The tower is 130 years old, but the clock is 150 years old,” she said.
To mark the occasion, the association will hold a celebration at the tower, which is located at the intersection of Route 41 and Bridge Street in Gap, on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1 to 5 p.m. Rep. Bryan Cutler will send a proclamation in recognition of the event. Light beverages and snacks will be served.
Kathy will have a membership table set up at the event. A nominal charge is required to become a member of the association, which works to maintain the clock and tower. Kathy will also sell salmon-colored mugs with a picture of the tower on one side and notations about the age of the clock and the tower on the other side. Kathy’s husband, Gary, known for his artistic renditions of local buildings, is working on a print of the clock, copies of which should also be available for purchase at the celebration.
The clock was originally located on Penn Monument Hall (now home to the Town Clock Cheese Shoppe), located across Bridge Street from the clock. The brick building was named Penn Monument Hall because William Penn had made a historic visit to the area. Fifteen years after the clock was placed, the building was taken over by the sheriff. Concerned townspeople removed the clock from the building and hid it in a nearby ice house. In 1892, the clock was placed in the tower, but the location was threatened in 1953 when the clock tower appeared to be doomed by the widening of Route 41. Area citizens banded together to save the clock, and the Gap Town Clock Association was formed. The association was able to have the tower moved 75 feet to its present location.

The ninth annual Jan’s Daisy Dash 5K Run/Walk will kick off the day at Cocalico High School stadium, 650 S. 6th St., Denver, at 9 a.m. Day-of registration will begin at 8 a.m. Medals and prizes will be awarded to male and female top finishers, and medals will be presented to winners in eight age groups. Funds raised by the run benefit Jan’s Circle of Friends, a group that provides assistance to community children affected by domestic violence or parental loss. Interested runners may register at www.janscircleoffriends.org or www.pretzelcitysports.com.
Between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., the 300 block of Main Street will be closed, and at 9 a.m. Main Street businesses will open. A scavenger hunt involving painted rocks with the Discover Denver logo on one side will be held. The back side of each rock will contain a word or a series of words participants can use to form a message or a phrase. A pumpkin painting contest in memory of Caroline Schannauer will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the street in front of the Courtyard Café on Main, and Burns Weaver, a performer from Lititz, will entertain until 11 a.m.
At 11 a.m., events will begin in the Denver Memorial Park, 801-A Main St., Denver. Joe Lerman and Paul, a duo, will entertain from the stage, and a chili cook-off will be held for the second time. According to Flory, the cook-off is limited to 15 contestants, and the deadline to enter is Saturday, Oct. 1. Prizes will be awarded in both People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice categories. “It’s free for people to taste and vote,” Flory said. The dog parade, which will be led by Eagle Scout Blake McGowan, who proposed adding a dog park to the venue, will begin at the dog park. Dogs will be judged in two categories - best costume and the dog the judges would most like to take home.
Other events will include a virtual Walk Through Denver, presented by entertainer Kel Lee, who will encourage people to talk about things in town. People will also be able to decorate kindness rocks. “This is an activity for anyone of any age,” said Flory, who noted that paints, brushes, and rocks will be provided. A former Eagle Scout will man the Frisbee golf course, handing out Frisbees donated by Blue Ridge Communications to give attendees a chance to try the sport. Likewise, the pickleball court will be open and paddles will be available for people to try their hand at pickleball. The skatepark will be open for demonstrations and for children to learn skateboard moves, and the Denver Fire Company will benefit from holding a fundraiser food truck event featuring several trucks, including one selling Mexican food.

The Garden Spot girls’ soccer team showed a tremendous deal of character bouncing back to defeat Lancaster Catholic on Saturday, September 17.
It was the team’s first win of the season and came only two days following a tremendous effort against Lampeter-Strasburg at home.
The Pioneers scored two secondhalf goals to pull away and beat the Spartans 3-1 on Thursday at Lampeter-Strasburg. Clair Armbruster scored the equalizer for the Spartans in the 32nd minute of the match.
“It was a hard-fought game,” Kyle Smith, the Spartans head coach, said. “We had many chances to put the ball in the back of the net and we came up short. We fought all the way to the end and I’m very proud of them.”
The Spartans improved to 1-7 with their 2-0 shutout of Lancaster Catholic on Saturday.
“The Catholic game was our best game of the year,” Smith said. “We were able to move the ball up the field with precision and accuracy.”
Ashton Gonzalez scored four minutes into the game, doing so off an Alexandra Culbert assist.
“Scoring the goal in the first few minutes really propelled us forward and we didn’t look back,” Smith added. “Our defense was solid all game and made huge contributions to start up our attacks.”
The Spartans went up 2-0 in the 53rd minute on a Crusaders own goal.
“Ashton scored the first goal and got her head on the second one and it bounced off one of them into the net,” said Smith. “Overall, it was a wellplayed game by both teams, and we were very excited to get our first win.”
After losing 3-0 to LancasterLebanon League foe Manheim Central on Monday, September 19, the Spartans visited another league rival two days later.
Elizabethtown came back from a 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 victory.
Rebekah Witman gave Garden Spot the lead 21 minutes into the game. The Bears evened the score 11 minutes later on a Lily Heistand goal. Heistand scored eight minutes into the second half for the eventual margin of victory.
GOLF
The golf team competed at Mocassin Run Thursday, Sept. 15 and finished with a 382 team score, just five strokes away from Cocalico. Evan Humphreys (87) and Lila Albertson (96) carded Spot’s lowest scores on the day.
FOOTBALL
Blake Weaver ran for 73 yards on seven carries for the Spartans’ football team. His longest run of the night was 38 yards on Friday, September 16 at LL League foe Daniel Boone.
That 38-yard rushing play put Weaver in the endzone and the Spartans ahead in the fourth quarter as they defeated the Blazers 19-10. The win raised the Spartans’ mark to 3-1 (1-0
league). The Blazers fell to 1-3, 0-1.
After a 38-yard Nick Gleason field goal and a 71-yard Kye Harting touchdown pass to Zac Nagle put the Spartans up 10-0, the Blazers came back to even the score before halftime. There was no scoring in the third stanza.
Harting finished with 147 passing yards on nine completions. He also ran for 119 yards on 15 attempts for an average of 7.93 yards per carry.
Daniel Boone quarterback Dean Rotter completed 13-of-24 passes for 160 yards, including a 25-yard TD toss to Max Heffner. Of those 160 yards by Roter, 132 of them landed in Heffner’s hands in eight receptions.

It was feast or famine for the boys’ soccer team which won a 4-0 contest over Manheim Central on Monday, September 19 - the feast. The famine came in the form of two 3-0 lossesthe September 15 loss to LampeterStrasburg and a loss by the same margin at Elizabethtown on the 21st.
The up-and-down series of games put the Spartans at 5-4-1 (23-0 league).
Five different players got into the scoring against Central. Jace Weaver’s goal came one minute into the game. Trey Dwyer scored off an Emir Hamzic assist in the 16th minute.
By the midway mark of the first half, the Spartans were up 3-0
thanks to Aiden Durante’s goal. Rowan Sensening added another score in the second half.
