Nineteen-year-old Nadine DeBalko of Adamstown was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 12 and had to change her perceptions about the disorder. “I thought it was just older people who had it,” she recalled. Lancaster resident Kerri Michnya never remembers a time without See Walk To End Epilepsy pg 3

The organization offers a number of services including equine-assisted psychotherapy, recreational riding, equineassisted learning, equineassisted child preparation groups, general counseling services, the ADOPTS program, foster care, foster care adoption, and post-permanency services. BCS partners with local churches, communities, and governments to identify, train, and support families to be available for children in need. One adoptive mother told BCS, “My husband and I found the program to be very empowering for us. The information helped us to understand the ‘Why?’ of our son’s behavior, and it gave us the tools we need to help our son.” BCS is founded on the belief that by working together for families, the world can be changed. The organization serves children and families by providing support to overcome adverse life challenges. Readers who would like more information about the Fall Festival may call 484-335-2705.

seizures. She was diagnosed at age 10. Now age 42, she has been seizure-free for 11 years. Both Michnya’s and Wingert’s seizures are well-controlled by medication. DeBalko opted to have surgery two years ago to remove her amygdala, the area of the brain where her seizures were centralized. She considers herself cured. “Epilepsy is a spectrum disorder,” Michnya explained. “It looks different and treatments are different in each person.” Navigating life with epilepsy is challenging, the trio agreed. “There didn’t seem to be a lot of resources available,” Wingert said. “I saw my neurologist every six months, but they couldn’t help with the emotional aspect.” Thankfully, he said, he discovered the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania (EFEPA) through social media a few years ago. Epilepsy has two sets of specific challenges, Wingert suggested: the seizures themselves and the side effects of the treatments available. The uncertainty of the disorder, the restriction from driving and from certain occupations, and the financial costs of medication, ambulance rides, and hospital stays can create a lot of stress. For people like Wingert who have idiopathic seizures, stress can trigger more seizures. Thus, having a community of
understanding people is hugely important. Michnya is EFEPA’s Lancaster County resource coordinator. She coordinates a support group and other programs to ensure people with epilepsy have the encouragement, guidance, and information they need. “My job allows me to give back,” she said. “I feel really fortunate.” Michnya is also helping to coordinate Lancaster County’s inaugural Walk to End Epilepsy along with Wingert and DeBalko, who are both volunteers. Wingert had attended a version of the event in Philadelphia and was so impressed by the camaraderie and sense of community among the participants that he suggested that it be brought to Lancaster. “It was more than time to have it here,” Michnya said. “It sends a great message: You are not alone in your diagnosis.” The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Oct. 12. Registration will open at 9 a.m., the walk will begin at 10 a.m., and the event will conclude by noon. Both DeBalko and Wingert are slated to speak during the opening ceremony. The walk will mimic Philadelphia’s event by taking place inside the stadium. “It really brings the
community together,” Wingert said of keeping the event contained. The event is family focused, so there will be activities for children throughout the morning. These include entertainment by a magician, face painting, balloon sculpting, and play on an inflatable slide. Refreshments will be provided at the event, and an afterparty will be held at Yorgos, 66 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There will also be opportunities to win gift cards and other prizes at the walk. Additionally, vendors will be on hand to offer information about pharmaceuticals, CBD, and more. The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held rain or shine. There is no charge to attend the event, but fundraising is encouraged. A minimum fundraising amount has been set to receive an event T-shirt. Proceeds from the walk will fund research into treatments and cures as well as resources for people with the disorder. Event sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information or to register for the walk, readers may visit www.EpilepsyWalkPA.org. Online registration will close on Friday, Oct. 11. Individuals may also register at the event. Michnya may be reached for questions at kmichnya@efepa.org or 717449-1872.

Community Meal from pg 1 added that chicken legs and wings were divided and that plenty was available for all. About 16 volunteers help to set up for the meal. Among those are prayer partners who sit and talk with the guests. “People have told us they come (to the dinner) because of the relationships they form (with the prayer partners), commented Don. According to the organizers, the menu has not been repeated exactly in the two years the meal has been served. “Last month was bacon cheddar wurst sandwiches, said Lisa Kerstetter, the CrossNet representative who works with the team on the meal. Kerstetter added that sides included garlic roasted potatoes, two kinds of salad, and two kinds of cake - banana and carrot. Although the original portions are healthy, there has always been enough left to offer seconds of some menu items. “ When everyone has been fed, we make the decision to open it up for seconds, said Fred. Kerstetter noted that since the inception of the meal at the

Booters Take on McCaskey, Fall Short 4-1 by Ara Grigorian
Sam Hershey scored twice to lead McCaskey past Garden Spot, 4-1, in boys’ soccer action on Monday night in New Holland. Griffin Witmer’s goal in the 30th minute put Spot back in the game. It came off an assist from Thomas Andress. The Spartans out-shot the Red Tornado 9-7. The goalkeeping twosome of Cole Grunow and Grady Bachman each finished with four saves in front of McCaskey’s net. Matt High made three saves for Garden Spot. FOOTBALL Garden Spot welcomed LampeterStrasburg on Friday night, Sept. 20, in the Spartans’ first Section Two home game of the season. The Pioneers came into the game having outscored their previous four opponents by a collective score of 183-26, an average of 46-7. The L-S offense didn’t let up at all in New Holland, defeating the Spartans 557 and improving to 2-0 in the LancasterLebanon League (5-0 overall). Garden Spot fell to 0-5, (0-2 league). In a first period that saw the Pioneers put up 34 points, the big play hurt the Spartans. The Pioneers scored on a 67yard touchdown pass from Connor Nolt to Beau Heyser, an 84-yard rushing touchdown by Bryan McKim, who finished with 162 yards on the ground, Donovan Jackson’s 69-yard punt return and a 61-yard scoring pass from Nolt to Austin Stoltzfus. Nolt only had four pass attempts on the night, completing all four. He had 186 aerial yards and two TD’s. John Dykie had a big night for Garden Spot, rushing for 141 yards and the team’s only touchdown - a fourth-quarter 10-yard run followed by Walker Martin’s extra point kick. Martin also added a 34-yard field goal. GOLF

Jack Bruggeman handles the ball for the Spartans during their Garden Spot’s Holt Albertson, left, and Adam Hershey posted rounds of 84 and 87, respectively, to place 22nd and 33rd in the individual scoring and help the Spartans to an eighth-place finish in the 4-1, Section Two loss to visiting McCaskey last Monday. Lancaster-Lebanon League Golf Championships at Foxchase last Monday.
The previous week, the Garden Spot golf team’s score of 350 had the Spartans in the thick of things as they finished a close fourth at Foxchase Ephrata and Elizabethtown scoring 343 and 346 respectively. A week later and back on the same course, the Spartans faced Warwick, Manheim Township, Cocalico, Octorara, Lampeter-Strasburg, Warwick, Lancaster Mennonite and Pequea Valley. Township again claimed a victory, shooting a 308 - the Blue Streaks’ thirdbest score of the season. Garden Spot
finished with 373 and fell to 18-19 on the year. Holt Albertson shot a team best 84 and Adam Hershey also had a good day with an 87. Other top golfers on the day for Garden Spot were Justin Kemper (100) and Zach Lessley (102). FIELD HOCKEY Back on September 5, Cocalico had blanked Garden Spot 1-0. In a late Thursday afternoon game back on their home turf, the Spartans exacted some revenge by beating their Section Two rivals by the same score.

“We only scored one goal, but a win is a win,” said head coach Katy Eby. “We lost to them earlier in the season. We still have some things to work on.” The victory evened the Spartans’ league mark at 4-4-0 and improved their overall record to 6-5-0. “It was a big win for us,” Eby added. “We needed this win for our section standings and for districts.” Districts? Garden Spot did move up to number 16 in the District Three Class-AA power rankings by beating 11thranked Cocalico. “We keep it on our radar,” Eby said of district playoff aspirations. “We
think we have the ability to get there.” The lone goal of the game came at the 17:25 mark of the first half. Freshman Brielle Moyer scored off a Katie Swatski assist. “She has scored for us a couple of times now,” Eby said. “She’s a ninth-grader who’s feisty and hungry. “Katie Swatski dribbled down the sideline and she fed the ball in to Brielle, who one-timed it into the cage.” And whenever there’s a shutout, there is a shout out to the goalie. In this case it was not just goalkeeper Bryna Kelly doing a great job, but teammate Karynne Henry fielding some Cocalico shots and earning
defensive saves. Kelly finished with a pair of saves and Henry had three saves as a defender. “Bryna Kelly did very well,” Eby remarked. “Karynne, who’s one of our defenders, helped her out on the post. She kept the ball out of the cage with three defensive saves. That’s pretty significant. “Cocalico has some good shooters and they were taking some opportunities,” continued the coach. “Karynne had Bryna’s back.” The victory was inspirational for the Spartans, who had dropped their Tuesday night game at Manheim Central by a 3-0 score. PENNYSAVER GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Garden Spot came into Monday evening’s Section Two match one win shy of being tied for first place. The Spartans’ opponent - undefeated, first place Elizabethtown,
Garden Spot was 4-1 in league (7-1 overall) and the Bears were 5-0, 8-0. Despite losing the third and fourth sets and nearly letting a 2-0 lead slip away, the Spartans won the nail-biter fifth set 15-13 to claim this match. The win and other action around the league created a three-way tie for first in Section Two with Ephrata also going to 5-1. Garden Spot opened the match with a close 25-18 win and took a huge advantage with an even closer, morale-boosting 25-21 victory. The Bears came back with a 25-20 win and edged Garden Spot 25-22 in the fourth set. Kallee Locker of E-town had a match-high total of 22 kills. She also notched three blocks. Elyse Mundorff poured in 18 kills for the visiting Spartans. Abby O’Neill had a sensational night with five aces and 55 assists in this intense, high-scoring match. Kelly Martin led the way with 22 digs and Logan Martin registered three blocks for Spot. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Spartans put together an impressive offensive showing on Monday, defeating McCaskey 4-0 on the road. It was the Spartans’ first victory in L-L League girls’ soccer (1-5-0) as they improved to 3-9-0. It was a 17-shot attack on the Red Tornado goal. Avery Stauffer came away with a hat trick, scoring two of her goals early in each half. Stauffer scored 5:25 into the match and, after Lindsey Sweigart had made it 2-0 at the 29:10 mark, she padded the lead 25 seconds into the second half. Having a flair for scoring early in each period, she actually notched the Photo by Vinny Tennis hat trick with a goal 30 seconds prior Logan Martin wins a head ball for the Spartans during their 4-1, to the end of the match. Section Two loss to McCaskey last Monday at Garden Spot Sweigart also had an assist on the day as did Erna Hamzic, Mataya Hostetter and Lauren Wolfe. Marissa Spacht needed to make three saves to earn the shutout. Hamzic had a goal in a Saturday evening game at Warwick on September 21. The Spartans and Warriors went into intermission tied 1-1. The Warriors got two second-half goals from Jess Williamson and defeated Garden Spot 3-1 despite Spacht making eight saves on the night. GIRLS’ TENNIS Seniors Jenna Muttik and Kendall Halsey earned a team point at number one doubles in last Monday’s tough match against Section Two foe Solanco. They teamed up to post an 8-2 victory. Also, at number two singles, Halsey won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Mutti came up short at her number photo by Vinny Tennis one singles match, falling to Faith
Redcay 6-4, 6-1 as Solanco went on to earn a 5-2 win. Junior Daniela Holder played a tough match at doubles and singles. At number two doubles, she and Patti Unruh came up just short in an 8-4 defeat. Holder lost a close opening set at num-

The Lancaster School of Psychodrama and Experiential Psychotherapies is opening its doors with a full class schedule this fall. The school is based at Liberty Place at 313 W. Liberty St. in Lancaster. The school has been developed by Karen Carnabucci, a licensed clinical social worker who has been training mental health professionals and others for more than 30 years. She will be the director and primary faculty member at the school and expects to host additional instructors with expertise in topics such as trauma-informed care, loss and grief, and alternative healing practices. The training program focuses on experiential psychotherapies and action methods, including psychodrama, role play, group skills, Family and Systemic Constellations, art making, and sand tray. Starting January 2020, Karen will join with Sharon Czabafy to teach a four-part series on trauma-informed care with action and experiential methods. Carnabucci is a nationally board-certified trainer in psy-
chodrama, sociometry, and group psychotherapy. She has also been certified as a Family and Systemic Constellations facilitator by the Stark Institute, Germany, and the Hellinger DC Center, Bethesda, Md. As a psychotherapist working since 1989, Carnabucci has expertise in trauma, addiction and recovery, intergenerational trauma and ancestry healing, spirituality, energy healing, and the mind-body approach to health. She is the author of “Show and Tell Psychodrama: Skills for Therapists, Coaches, Teachers, and Leaders” and coauthor of “Healing Eating Disorders With Psychodrama and Other Action Methods: Beyond the Silence and the Fury” and “Integrating Psychodrama With Systemic Constellation Work: New Directions for Action Methods, Mind-Body Therapies, and Energy Healing.” The school will especially cater to mental health professionals seeking alternatives to traditional auditorium trainings to get continuing education credits. In addition, the school will also serve physicians, nurses, educators,
- 1 cup Golden Barrel Coconut Oil - 2¼ cups Golden Barrel Organic Cane Sugar - 1¼ cups cocoa powder - 1 tsp. salt - 4 large eggs - 1 tsp. baking powder - 1½ cup all-purpose flour - 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract - 1 cup chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9x13” pan with coconut oil or nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. In a medium-sized pan (or mediumsized bowl in microwave), melt coconut oil on low heat. Add in sugar and stir for a couple minutes to dissolve some sugar (all sugar will not be dissolved...be sure to not overcook). Take off heat and pour mixture in a medium-sized bowl. Stir in cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and vanilla. Whisk in eggs, until smooth, then add the flour and chocolate chips, stirring to combine. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. (I used a stoneware pan to bake, so I baked mine on the longer side--32 minutes.) Remove from oven and cool on cooling rack.

In celebration of Physical Therapy Month, HARTZ Physical Therapy will host the 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 5, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting Off the Streets Lancaster, a nonprofit charitable organization. The flat and fast 5K race will be held at Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz, at 9 a.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners, and customized prizes will be given to the top finishers in each age bracket. In addition, the family-friendly event will feature a children’s fun run (with various distances), fall crafts, post-race food, and music throughout the morning. For additional information or to register, readers may visit www.hartzpt.com. Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster is a volunteer-run charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. Requests for help increased 36% in 2018 over 2017, and an additional increase is expected in 2019. As a Lancaster County-based, family-owned business, HARTZ Physical Therapy has raised more than $200,000 for various local charities through the Fall Blast and other events over the past 15 years. It has clinics in Lititz, Mount Joy, and Ephrata, as well as two in Lancaster. YWCA Lancaster has announced the six honorees for the Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon, and Dr. Tererai Trent will be the keynote speaker. On Aug. 26, Trent was honored as one of the 10 most inspirational women in the world with a lifesize statue at the Statues for Equality event in New York City. Trent grew up in a cattle-herding family in rural Zimbabwe. She did not have the opportunity to go to school, so she taught herself to read and write from her brother’s schoolbooks. Despite being married young and having three children by the time she was 18, she never lost sight of her dreams of going to America for higher education. She eventually earned multiple degrees, and she has a global platform with world leaders and international businesses and audiences where she advocates for universal access to quality education. Trent has published two books, won the 2018 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work, and improved education for more than 6,000 children. The official biographies of Trent and the six honorees are available at www.ywcalancaster.org/women ofachievement. The six honorees include Timbrel Adidala, creator and owner of Lush Bazaar, Lancaster; Milzy Carrasco, director of neighborhood engagement, City of Lancaster; Falesha Martin, owner of Turn N/Headz Hair Studio, Lancaster and founder of Breathe Again, the Sheena Martin Foundation; Fran Rodriguez, senior
