SusanBurke, a member of the ELANCO Library fundraising committee, is looking forward to the return of the ELANCO Library Gala. “It will be a nice evening out,” stated Burke. “Have some food and drink. Mingle and listen to a band.”

This year’s event will be called the ELANCO Library Autumn Jubilee, and it will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, beginning at 6 p.m. at The Silk Mill on Main, 328 E. Main St., New Holland. The evening will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, libations, and lively entertainment.

Burke noted that the emphasis in selecting the location and vendors was decidedly local. “We want to promote New Holland, so we chose The Silk Mill on Main, and we are using a vendor in East Earl, called Flourish, for the flowers for our event,” said Burke, who added that arrangements for the

music were made through the New Holland Band. A silent auction, featuring artwork and themed baskets, will be held. Local businesses that donate to the event will be recognized in a multimedia program.

The library, which is located at 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, has its roots in the downtown area, where it was established as the New Holland Library in 1933 by the New Holland Business and Professional Women’s Club. By 1965, the library had moved to a room in what was then the New Holland Borough Hall. Eleanor Dissinger was instrumental in the founding of the library, and an award is given yearly in her name to a volunteer who has served the library well. That award will be given out at the gala, and Mark Dilts, president of the board, will say a few words.

noted that although ELANCO is supported by the state and funds from five local municipalities - New Holland, East Earl, Earl, Terre Hill, and Caernarvon - a large percentage of the budget remains uncovered. “Our purpose is to raise much-needed funds,” he said.

Burke emphasized that one goal of the event is to attract residents from all areas served by ELANCO. “The library is hoping for community support,” she noted. “We are hoping to see people (from all areas).”

Per-person tickets to the gala, which must be reserved by Thursday, Oct. 20, may be purchased by clicking on the link at https://elancolibrary.org.

The library holds several other fundraisers, and the organization will take part in the ExtraGive 2022 online fundraising event to be held on Friday, Nov. 18. Readers who wish to help during the ExtraGive may visit www.extragive.org.

The names Weber and Weaver are actually the same - Weaver being the anglicized version of the German Weber.

When the Weber family came to Philadelphia from Switzerland between 1711 and 1717, it originally settled in Germantown and then in the Lampeter area. Johannes, the father, had four sons. Hans, remained in Lampeter, and his three brothers - Jacob, Henry, and George - moved to East Earl Township, in an area that came to be known as the Weaverland Valley.

Cruise To The Forge To Feature Car Show And More

Historic Poole Forge will present Cruise to the Forge, the site’s annual car, truck and bike show, on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to the display of vehicles of all makes and models, the event will include food, music and a silent auction. The site’s mansion will also be open for tours.

Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. Spectators will be admitted free of charge.

A highlight of the day is when vehicles enter the car show and drive over the site’s covered bridge, which crosses the Conestoga River. A professional photographer will take photos, which will be available for purchase.

“We get anywhere from 75 to 100 vehicles,” said Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director, noting that more cars may be on hand depending on the weather. “We will have at least two or three local car clubs represented.”

Judging for the top five cars will be at 2:30 p.m. A representative from the a local car club will choose the winners. The prizes will be framed prints of the covered bridge.

Craft vendors will be stationed outside, and the silent auction will be located outside as well. Auction

Publishes Second Children’s Book

Fairmount will host a book signing and presentation on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room on the first floor of the Wheat Ridge Apartments at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. The event will feature Lois M. Lehman, who is a resident of Fairmount and the author of the recently released children’s book “New Adventures With Grandma.”

The new book is her second. Her first book, “Walking With Grandma,” was published a year ago and has had a second printing.

“New Adventures” is longer than the first one, with 10 stories and 54 pages. During the pandemic, Lehman began writing letters to her faraway young grandchildren about her daily walks among the nearby gardens, trees, and ponds, and these letters grew into stories. In “New Adventures,” Grandma Lois invites children ages 3 to 9 along on her walks to discover friends among the animals, birds, plants, and people she meets.

In addition to the book launch, Lehman will read to children from her new book at a story time on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room.

For information on purchasing a copy of the book, contact Lehman at 717-355-9280 or artsunaean@gmail.com. Directions to Fairmount are available at www.FairmountHomes.org.

Spartans Battle Ephrata in Boys’ Soccer

With a tough 1-0 loss at home to Ephrata on Thursday, September 29, the Garden Spot boys’ soccer team fell to 3-4-0 in the LancasterLebanon League. The loss evened the team’s overall mark at 6-6-1.

Garden Spot goalie Josh Martin had a sensational game in goal, making 11 saves as the Mountaineers (62-0 league) had 13 shots on goal.

Chad Jones managed to finish one of the Mountaineers’ chances, scoring 32 minutes into the match.

The Spartans posted their second draw of the season at LampeterStrasburg, Monday, October 3. Rowan Sensenig scored just before the halftime whistle, tying the score

at 1-1. The game remained scoreless in the second half, making the Spartans 3-4-2 in league play.

FIELD HOCKEY

With a 59-8 gap in goals scored versus goals surrendered, it’s no wonder the Garden Spot field hockey team has a 12-2-0 record and is sitting atop the Section Three standings with a 7-0 league mark.

“Honestly, our defense has been super strong this year,” Katy Eby, the Spartans’ head coach, remarked. “They are doing a great job stepping up and stopping the play before the other team gets to the circle. We’re just not allowing shots against us this year.”

The defense has notched 10 shutouts so far, including a recent 20 shutout of Elco followed by a dominant 8-0 defeat of Solanco four days later.

“Elco is a scrappy team that doesn’t give up,” said Eby. “They made us work hard for our goals.”

In the away game on Thursday, September 29, Melanie Esh scored a second-period goal off a Kyle Barshinger assist to give Garden Spot a 1-0 lead. The game stayed close until Morgan Watt doubled the visitors’ lead at the 2:26 mark of the fourth quarter. Esh provided the assist.

The Spartans went into

the fourth quarter of the home game with Solanco leading 4-0. Esh, who finished with four goals and an assist, scored twice in the final period. Lauren Horning also had a hat trick. She and Emma Swatski each scored in the fourth quarter as well.

Karis Minninger also had a big day, registering three assists. Barshinger and Horning each had one assist as Spot out-shot Solanco 22-1. It was an easy shutout for goalie Kasey Miller.

Wednesday, the Spartans welcomed Cocalico to New Holland. The second-place Eagles fell to 4-2-1 in the league as Garden Spot eked out a 2-1 win.

Horning’s goal at the 11:37 mark of the fourth quarter proved to be the winning goal. She scored off an assist by Esh, who also had a second-period goal.

Miller finished with three saves to notch another win.

FOOTBALL

Garden Spot head football coach Matt Zamperini has been emphasizing the importance of having a reliable place kicker all year.

And on Friday, September 30, against Section Three rival Ephrata, Nick Gleason proved his coach’s point.

“Nick Gleason came up big with a beautiful 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to put us up 24-21,” Zamperini stated.

The 24-21 lead that Gleason gave

Garden Spot proved to be the winning margin. The Spartans (5-1) improved to 3-0 against Section Three rivals. They are part of a tight race for section supremacy as Elizabethtown and Solanco - both of whom are unbeaten at 6-0 - also share first place.

The Ephrata game was also a comeback win for the Spartans, who trailed 14-7 at the half. The goahead touchdown for the Mountaineers was a 34-yard pass from Sam McCracken (12-for-23, 201 yards, 2 TD’s) to Jeremiah Knowles.

“Defense held Ephrata to 52 yards on 32 carries, but gave up 200 yards passing,” Zamperini noted. “We blitzed in passing downs more in the second half and were able to get good pressure on their quarterback. That helped us a lot.”

Kye Harting connected with Zac Nagle for a 22-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring before Ephrata put up 14 in the second quarter. Harting finished with 105 passing yards on 10 completions in addition to running for 130 yards and a touchdown on 16 rushing attempts.

“Ephrata did not have an answer for him,” Zamperini said of Harting. “He rushed for over 100 yards for the second week in a row.

Harting’s 54-yard dash to the endzone along with Gleason’s PAT tied the score at 21-21 in the fourth quarter. Tyler Hurst also scored on a three-yard

carry in the third stanza.

Blake Weaver had some big running plays, gaining 114 yards on 10 carries. Jadon Burkholder carried the ball six times for 33 yards. He also caught a 14-yard reception.

Including his touchdown, Nagle caught four passes for 56 yards. Nick Smucker caught two passes for a total of 21 yards.

Asked about this team’s growth and hard work, Zamperini commented, “The biggest thing the coaching staff has seen in these young men is that they are starting to really believe in themselves and in each other. They don’t stop playing on Friday nights.”

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

In a wildly intense girls’ volleyball match at New Holland, Lampeter-Strasburg regained momentum and stabilized the match just in time to top Spot 3-2 on Thursday, September 29.

The Pioneers gained the early edge with a 25-15 victory. The Spartans battled their unrelenting adversary in the second set, finally posting a 25-23 win.

After a Pioneers 25-11 win, Garden Spot outlasted L-S 28-26 only to lose the tiebreaker 15-8.

Garden Spot fell to 3-6 in league competition while the Pioneers improved to 5-3.

Valerie Martin came through with 12 kills and two aces for Spot. Summer Stern led the team in digs with 22 while Jada Dickson dished out 15 assists.

Also contributing for the Spartans were Chloe Grady, who had two kills, and Avery Smith, who registered two blocks.

The Spartans lost three close sets in a Tuesday night Section Two match at home. Ephrata won by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21.

Smith had seven kills and five blocks. Ashlynn Rapp also finished with seven kills while Kayla Kauffman led the Spartans with 16 assists. Mya Paparo had a pair of aces and 16 digs.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

In a close L-L League contest, the Garden Spot girls’ soccer team won by

a 2-0 score at home over LampeterStrasburg on Monday, October 3.

The Spartans scored two early goals - both in the first 10 minutes of the match - and made the 2-0 lead hold up.

Amelia Sharp and Ashton Gonzalez scored for Spartans, who claimed their first league win (1-7) and improved to 2-11-0 overall.

The Mountaineers topped the Spartans 4-0 at Ephrata the previous Thursday with Emily Weidner leading the Mounts offense - one goal and two assists.

School Sets Chicken Barbecue, Auction

Conestoga Christian School (CCS) will hold its 49th annual chicken barbecue and auction on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15. All proceeds will benefit the school, which offers classes for students in preschool through 12th grade.

The event will begin with the barbecue dinner on Oct. 14, which will be takeout only. Dinners will be available to purchase at the door until sold out. Dinners may be

picked up in the school’s front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Also on Oct. 14, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and there will be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase.

A live auction will be held on Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. until the last item is sold.

The auction will feature a selection of favorite items, experiences, artwork and quilts, as well as jellies and jams and homemade yogurt donated each year by CCS families.

“Donations have been coming in

strong,” said Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. “We have a Discovery Flight from Chester County Aviation, a fine dining experience with one of our school families and couple of destinations that were donated. One is at a Tennessee lake house and another is at a beach house in Ocean City, N.J.”

In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes this year will include Date Night, Summer Fun, No Pressure Dinner, Home Decor, Hunting, Local Blessings, Grilling, Camping, the Pampered Pup, Helping Hands and Something for the Graduate. Bidding on class baskets will start at 9:30 a.m.

CCS students in the art and ceramics independent study classes led by teacher Eirené Groff have also created items that will be up for bids, including paintings and a quilt. Groff will place her own oil painting in the auction as well.

“Right after the class baskets are auctioned, we will give the bidders an opportunity to raise their paddles to make a donation toward our special project,” said Parris. “In the past it’s been a new copier, a bus and picnic tables. This year, our special project is our capital campaign. With the amount of growth in our enrollment, we would like to build additional classrooms.”

Coffee, breakfast sandwiches, doughnuts, homemade yogurt, fruit and individual apple dumplings will also be offered for sale at the Cougar Café on Oct. 15.

CCS is holding an online auction as well. Bidding will start on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 8 a.m. and run through Tuesday, Oct. 25, at noon. Online auction items will include handmade crafts, meal packages from the Beam and Kurtz family farms and a Christmas tapestry class from Flourish Flowers in East Earl. Bidders can visit http://tinyurl.com/CCSonline2022 for more details.

Lord, who recently turned 90, creates stained-glass items, ranging from cats and owls to snowflakes and even stained-glass windows.

Lord shares her knowledge by teaching beginner and follow-up classes in the art, but her own experience learning to work with glass took a much more winding path.

When Lord, who is originally from Michigan, was in her 30s, she had amassed a collection of driftwood that washed up at her family’s cottage on the lake in her home state. “I saw an

ad for this (stained-glass) owl on a piece of driftwood,” recalled Lord, who sent away for a kit that made three of them. She soon discovered she did not have the right tools for the job. “I had a pair of pliers and a soldering gun,” she remembered. “It took four or five years to get from making nuggets to cutting and making things (I could sell),” said Lord, who now teaches students in six weeks what it took her six years to learn on her own. “I don’t understand how I stuck with it. I made so many mistakes.”

When Lord arrived at GSV after living 50 years in Springfield, Delaware County, in late 2009, she had just missed the community’s October fall festival. She worked the whole year to prepare for the next one. This year, the fall festival has been replaced by a Makers Market to be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information may be found at www.gardenspotcommunities.org /family-christmas-event.

Lord has become known for her glass snowflakes, but those began as a mistake as well. “I got some bevels to make a star, but they didn’t work, and I had 30 of them,” she said. “I made my first snowflake, and it sold very well. So, the next year I came up with another one, and now I have 13 different patterns of snowflakes.”

The Artisans Corner, which opened in November 2021, has been a boon for Lord. “It’s such a blessing to be able to sell (my creations) each month at the store,” she noted. “It has kept me on my toes.” The first Friday of each month, an Artisan of the Month sets up a demonstration in front of the store. In August, Lord was the Artisan of the Month, demonstrating for two hours how she works in stained-glass.

“There are always people here for that,” Dinning pointed out. “(Those events) have been very successful.”

Lord loves the shop not only because it gives her an outlet to sell her creations, but because she adores the work of the other GSV artisans.

“This is such a great gift shop where you can get beautiful notecards and other gift items,” she said.

Hours for the shop, which is located to the left after entering Village Square, are Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information about GSV is available at www.gardenspotvillage.org

Bonnie Lord displays some of her many stained-glass creations in the Artisans Corner at Garden Spot Village.

NHAHS

PUBLIC SALE

ANTIQUES, COLLECTIBLES, HOUSEHOLD GOODS, TOOLS WED., OCT. 19TH,

The connection between these two areas will be explored in a presentation featuring descendants John Weber, Lamar Weaver, and Mary Lou Weaver Houser, to be held at a meeting of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS). The presentation will take place in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

The presentation has its roots in a competition of sorts held in November 2021 at the Lancaster County Art Association in Strasburg. Weber explained that 22 artists completed paintings of the Weber 1724 pioneer homestead in Lampeter. Weber, along with Weaver Houser and Jean Kilhefner-Hess of Mennonite Life (formerly the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society), selected a watercolor by Marita Hines to be made into prints, which will be available for sale at the meeting. Some of the renditions by other local artists will be on display as well. Susan Moedinger, who occupies the 1763 house at the homestead in Lampeter, plans to attend.

Also on display will be paintings and photographs of the 1761 Heinie Weber house, which was located on Quarry Road in East Earl. That house was razed in 1981. One of the paintings of the Heinie Weber house was completed by GSV resident Earl Horst, who has been invited to the meeting. “It’s an excellent representation (of the East Earl house),” said Weber, who will also bring remnants of roof tiles from that home. “(The roof) was unique to Lancaster County,” said Weber, who noted that the handmade tiles are rumored to have come from Europe.

Weber noted that the commonalities between the two houses will be pointed out. “They were constructed very similarly,” said Weber. “They had the large stone fireplace in the center of the house to help heat the whole house when winter set in.”

It is possible that the Webers (who became Weavers) took a branch of the Pequea Creek to the Conestoga River on their journey to the northeast portion of the county and even to Berks County. “The Conestoga River plays an important part in the legacy of moving people to other parts of the county,” said Weber. “The intention is to clarify or highlight the relationship between these two settlements,” he noted,

adding, “It’s the Lampeter intermediate settlement that allows the others to take place. It was the first stop after Germantown.”
