WMCC Table Dedicated To Howard H. Ranck By Ann Mead Ash

Ginny Dissinger, Becky Zimmerman, and friend Demi Porter made a decision to honor the connection of Dissinger’s and Zimmerman’s father, Howard H. Ranck, to the Welsh Mountain Community Center (WMCC). Together, they bid on a picnic table at the Ranck United Methodist Church silent auction. The table had been constructed by young church members. The three asked Dan Pratt, who lives near WMCC, to make a plaque for the table, which reads, “In Memory of Howard Ranck,” and bears the likeness of a surveying tool. The table is now located in the park adjacent to the community center. Howard was born in the Green Bank area, which is close to both the church and the community center. He grew up on a farm located in the valley just below the Welsh Mountains. According to Dissinger, Howard was always more interested in locating the See WMCC Table pg 8

A year ago, members of Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster decided to hold an event called Story Marks in Lancaster. The gathering featured photos and testimonies of a number of local women about how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. The event was so well received, the group, which includes Rebekah Christens-Persaud, Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, Linda Johnston, Marlene Hall, Joleen Yunginger, Blanche Myer, and Lily Cheng, has decided to hold a second presentation. On Thursday, Oct. 24, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos; hear speakers, including Friedrichs; and enjoy light fare. This year’s gallery will feature more than a dozen photos of women and the tattoos that have been an expression of their Christian journeys. “Every woman has a story,” said Strohecker. “The event is about sharing stories,” added Christens-Persaud. Both women emphasized that the group welcomes each woman “where she is, as she is.” “It’s about women sharing their stories to relate See Story Marks pg 4

Leads in the Lancaster Mennonite High School production of “Romeo and Juliet” include (from left) Megan Esch as the Nurse, Noelle Stringer as Juliet, Josiah Esch as Friar Lawrence, and Noah Schnabel as Romeo. The play will be staged at the school on Oct. 17, 18, 19, and 20.

Making Shakespeare Modern LMHS To Stage “Romeo and Juliet” By Ann Mead Ash

When director Dean Sauder chose “Romeo and Juliet” as the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) fall play, he wanted to present the show to audiences who may have never seen the entire play, and he set it in the present with contemporary scenes of students in high school using cellphones. Megan Esch, who plays the Nurse, has caught Sauder’s vision. “I feel a lot of people

(think) Shakespeare is old and boring, but a lot of this show is really funny,” she said. “I want people who come to see it to have a new understanding of Shakespeare.” “Romeo and Juliet” will be staged at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17; Friday, Oct. 18; and Saturday, Oct. 19. A matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Leads in the tragic tale of star-crossed lovers from feuding families will include Noah Schnabel as Romeo and Noelle Stringer as Juliet. Josiah Esch will play Friar Lawrence. memorizing their lines early in the summer, and Schnabel said he was concerned that audiences might be confused by the original Shakespearean dialogue in a modern setting. However, once rehearsals began, the depth of the subject matter moved to the forefront. “A lot of wrong choices are made,” noted Megan, adding that life lessons for both children and parents are contained in the script. “Don’t shut your children down when they want to talk,” she said. “Don’t do stuff behind your parents’ backs. This is an example of how tragically wrong that can go.” Josiah agreed. “(Romeo and Juliet’s) problems snowball throughout the show,” he said, warning, “Problems can snowball if you don’t address them.” The cast members are also having fun preparing to stage the show, which will be presented in a canyon format, with the audience on stage with the actors. “The nurse is an extreme character,” explained Megan. “She doesn’t have a setting between really happy and really upset, so I have to get into the character before I enter the scene and then hold an extreme

emotion during the dialogue.” “I am getting really immersed in the play,” said Josiah. “We get to know the play really well, and I find it fun personally (because) I like learning the motivations of characters and how that affects the timeline of events.” The small cast, which includes fewer than 20 students, has meant the actors and crew have had a chance to develop camaraderie. “It’s fun to interact with each other on and off stage,” said Megan. “We are pretty tight knit.” Schnabel said that overall, the tragedy has been a challenge to stage but that he feels a sense of accomplishment. “When a scene is over, it’s a relief … you’re tired,” he said. “It was really tough, but I am glad I did it.” Tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancastermennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab or by calling 717-740-2456 or emailing boxoffice@lancaster mennonite.org. A discounted student price will be offered, and tickets to the matinee performance will also be discounted.

Coat a 9x13” pan with coconut oil or nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. In a medium-sized pan (or mediumsized bowl in microwave), melt coconut oil on low heat. Add in sugar and stir for a couple minutes to dissolve some sugar (all sugar will not be dissolved...be sure to not overcook). Take off heat and pour mixture in a medium-sized bowl. Stir in cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and vanilla. Whisk in eggs, until smooth, then add the flour and chocolate chips, stirring to combine. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. (I used a stoneware pan to bake, so I baked mine on the longer side--32 minutes.) stones, stumps, and markers that defined the boundaries of the land than he was in farming. He attended businesses school and then completed an apprenticeship with his uncle, David G. Ranck, before beginning his own career as a surveyor. Beginning in the 1950s, Howard worked in the Welsh Mountains, among the members of a community that faced many difficulties. According to Dissinger, the area was depressed and food, shelter, and warmth during the winter months were needs the residents found difficult to meet. The community was private, and outsiders were not trusted. Howard made friends with George L. Boots, known as Pegleg, and through that friendship, he gained the trust of the local people that allowed him to complete his surveying work. Howard developed an affinity for the youths of the Welsh Mountain community, and he, along with others, wanted the young people to have a place where they could play sports, such as basketball and baseball, and just enjoy themselves.

Boots had owned land where Paes and Sandmine roads meet in East Earl. The land was transferred from Boots’ estate to A & C Equipment in 1968. An unproductive sand mine was located on the property as well. Howard surveyed the land, creating maps in 1969 and in 1978. Following the 1978 mapping of the land, the area was turned into a park and youth center. Howard’s grandson Jordan Good, senior client manager with C.S. Davidson in Lancaster, found the maps that Howard had created in relation to the the youth center and park. “I recently stumbled into my grandfather’s old plans,” said Good. The youth center burned in 1981. After the center was repaired, it became WMCC, with the mill stone from a former gristmill located at Ranck Road and Wallace Road as a centerpiece. Titus Musser, excavator, was called upon to grade the area for the park. Dissinger commented on the changes in the Welsh Mountains since the time when the land became a park. Half a mile from the park is the Welsh Mountain Medical and Dental Center, which sits on land adjacent to Mountain View Terrace, a lowincome housing option for area seniors, and the Welsh Mountain Home, originally the Good Samaritan Home. The park includes playground equipment, open flat fields, and a pavilion. The park and community center are available for use by the community. Readers who wish to know more about WMCC may search for www.welshmtpark.org. Those wishing to reserve the facility may call 717-354-2624.

Heart Walk Raises Funds More than 1,000 walkers turned out at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium on Sept. 21 for the 2019 Lancaster Heart Walk, presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LGH). The event raised $243,000 for the American Heart Association. Local news personality Anne Shannon and event chair Bernadette Taylor, senior executive vice president and chief human resources officer of Fulton Financial Corporation, hosted the opening festivities. Activities included health information, blood pressure checks, children’s activities and healthy snacks along the walk route. Among the participants was 3-year-old

congenital heart defect survivor Emmett Musselman and his parents, Doriana and Nate, of Lancaster city. Emmett was diagnosed in utero at 21 weeks with a congenital heart defect called double inlet left ventricle. He underwent a series of three open heart surgeries after he was born, the first when he was just 32 hours old, the second at 4 months old and the third at just over 2 years old. Emmett will have to continue seeing a cardiologist, but he has a healthy future ahead of him. After the Musselman family shared its story, Wayne Mutata of iTrain studios got the crowd warmed up and pumped up to walk, leading a chant of Emmett’s name

to kick things off. Walkers had the option of walking a 1-mile route around the stadium or a 3-mile route that continued around Buchanan Park. Fulton Bank, Penn Medicine LGH and UPMC Lititz took home the top company team honors. Bernadette Taylor of the Fulton Bank team, Terrie Byrd of the Penn Medicine LGH team and Liz Eshbach of the UPMC Lititz team were honored as the top walkers. Funds raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to build longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in life-saving research.

The Lancaster Heart Walk was presented by LGH and Fulton Bank, with additional support from the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, UPMC Pinnacle and WellSpan Ephrata. For more information about sponsorship or participation in the 2020 Lancaster Heart Walk, readers may contact Gillian Gagliardi at gillian.gagliardi@heart.org or visit www.heart.org/lancasterwalk.

2009 in order to help rehabilitate retired puppy mill breeder dogs through behavior modification and acclimation to life in a normal home in order to improve adoption success. Many of these dogs have spent their entire lives in hutches or kennels with limited human contact. In 2013, DVGRR acquired the adjacent property and converted a ranch house into the Lynne Glennon Sanctuary for Senior Goldens and Puppy Mill Survivors. The sanctuary ran at full capacity in 2018, and many dogs that needed the benefit of its group living arrangements waited in the main kennel until space opened up at the sanctuary, delaying adoption. According to DVGRR, metrics show that PHL works, and far fewer dogs are returned for failure to adjust to life in a normal household. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be followed immediately by DVGRR’s annual reunion, during which alumni dogs return for games and activities. The Spartans came away with a huge 3-0 victory in a Section Two showdown at Manheim Central on Wednesday. They needed a great deal of extra effort to silence the Barons in the opening set, which ended with a 32-30 margin in Spot’s favor They won the second set 25-14 and again need a few extra serves to win the third one 27-25. Hallie Butler came through with five aces for the Spartans while Abby O’Neill distributed 36 assists to her Spartan teammates. Kelly Martin

added 10 digs while Logan Martin registered two blocks. Garden Spot improved to 8-1 in league play. The Spartans (11-2 overall) have moved to third in the District Three Class-AAA power rankings. FOOTBALL The Spartans were leading 19-0 against Elizabethtown in a Section Two football game at New Holland on Friday, October 4. Garden Spot, looking to secure its first win of the season, gave up 13 points before the end of the first half and another 14 in the fourth quarter as the Bears came

back to win 27-19. The close defeat, which dropped Garden Spot to 0-7 and to 0-4 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, was reminiscent of a 20-14 defeat in the season-opening game with Daniel Boone. Elizabethtown earned its first L-L League win and improved to 3-4 overall. “It was 19-6, and then 19-13,” head coach Matt Zamperini recalled. “They blocked a punt in the second half and scored on a short field. “We missed on some opportunities on offense and that was the game,” added the coach. “We had some mishaps.” Jesse Martin, the Spartans quarterback, completed two passes, including a 17-yarder to John Dykie, the all-purpose junior running back. Martin led the team in rushing with 132 yards on 22 carries. Dykie had 61 yards of real estate on 19 carries. Asked if having these two backs can motivate an offensive line unit to give them opportunities, Zamperini replied, “I think so. If you have someone you know is gonna hit the hole if

you make it, it sure does. “John is starting to develop a good mental edge,” added the coach. “He is a two-way starter and plays on special teams too. He’s shouldering a heavy burden on Friday nights.” Martin opened the scoring with a 23-yard dash to the Bears’ end zone. He also scored on a five-yard rushing TD in the first quarter. Walker Martin tacked on the extra point to make it 13-0. The touchdown pass to Dykie made it 19-0 in the second quarter. Patrick Gilhool, the Bears’ quarterback, capped two drives with one-yard touchdown plays - one a quick toss to Cole Rice and the other a quarterback sneak. It was 19-13 at the half. Gilhool’s three-yard rushing TD and Rice’s nine-yard run to the end zone accounted for the 14 points in the final stanza. Zamperini talked about the youth on this year’s squad and the learning process of a group of hard-nosed players. “It’s a program that hasn’t won in a few years,” he said. “There are only

six guys in our senior class. We have a lot of sophomores playing on Friday nights. We’re green and it’s taking a while to grow.” The effort is definitely there by many of the players. Zamperini gave some of the credit to a trio of linebackers and to sophomore defensive back Joel Martin for their consistent hard play. “Bryce Mercer, Daniel Yang, and Tyler Gillenwater, our linebackers, have been contributing on defense. Joel Martin is also playing hard. They’re all competing. “We have been physical and not backing down,” he added. “We have seven or eight guys playing two ways.” GIRLS’ TENNIS Kendall Halsey won the openinground match in Flight Two of the L-L League Girls Tennis Tournament at Conestoga Valley on Friday, October 4. Halsey topped Allie Lukridge of Ephrata in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The Spartan senior faced Flight Two finalist Julia Briner in the next round. The Manheim Township junior won in straight sets. Halsey and Jenna Muttik, who fell in the opening round at Flight One, teamed up for Flight One doubles. They came up short against Penn Manor’s twosome, which included Flight One, Class-AAA champ Catherine Rabatin. CROSS COUNTRY The Spartans raced against Donegal and Elco in Mt. Joy on Wednesday. In this Section Two meet, the host school finished on top, defeating Garden Spot 18-43 and nipping Elco 27-28. The Raiders, who

were led by top finisher Mitchel Gray (17:22) topped Spot 21-34. Zane Kauffman’s sixth-place time of 18:47 was tops for the Spartans. Adam Horning had a good pace at 18:57, finishing eighth. In addition, Finn Wenrich earned 15th place with a time of 20:33. The Spartan boys fell to 4-7 on the year while the girls wrapped up their regular season campaign with a 6-5 record, defeating Elco 26-33 but dropping to Donegal. The hosts placed four runners in the top four spots of the race, including Hadley Shoaf’s winning time of 21:15. In fact, Elco’s Isabel Zwally (22:07, 5th place) was the only runner to not represent Donegal in of the top eight finishers. Garden Spot junior Cloe Martin claimed ninth place (23:20) while Amanda Coblentz (11th, 24:23) and Samantha Davis (14th, 25:59) also led the team. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Spartans fell to LampeterStrasburg and to Manheim Central in back-to-back Section Two soccer games. The Pioneers blanked the Spartans at L-S on Friday, October 4, by a 2-0 score. Both goals - McKenna Conklin and Sara Doutrich - came in the first half. The Spartans fell to 1-8-0 in league play and to 3-12-1 overall. Lindsey Sweigart’s goal 22 minutes into the second half of the Manheim Central match tied the score at 1-1. Sweigart took an assist from fellow senior Mataya Hostetter. The Barons, however, got two quick goals from Makenna Copley to make it 3-1 with eight minutes to

play. They added two late goals for the 5-1 win. BOYS’ SOCCER Garden Spot played one of its toughest matches of the year on Monday night, Oct. 7, at Manheim Central. The Spartans put up three goals against Section Two rival Central but finished on the short end of a 4-3 final. All four goals for the Barons came in the second half as Garden Spot fell to 0-9-0 in the league (0-14-2 overall). Logan Martin’s goal at the midway mark of the first half made it a 1-0 game - a lead which carried into the second half. The first nine minutes of the second half saw three goals scored, including an own-goal by the Spartans. The Barons had tied it on Quintin Rohrer’s goal a minute into the second half. Luke Steiner gave Garden Spot the edge five minutes later only to have the score tied 2-2 on the own goal. Rohrer’s second goal and one by Tyler Snavely put Central up 4-2 before JD Hahn cut the deficit to one goal with three minutes to play. Walker Martin and Thomas Andress each notched an assist for the Spartans who out-shot Central 9-6. FIELD HOCKEY Garden Spot’s field hockey team lost two of three league matches and went to 6-7-0 in the L-L League

available. To order chicken barbecue tickets in advance, readers may visit www.conestogachristian.net/auction -2019. Tickets for the chicken barbecue are also available from any school family, as well as in the school office and at the door. Those who choose to eat on-site will be able to shop in the craft room and gift certificate store and preview items that will be on the auction block the following morning. The Cougar Grounds Coffee House will serve coffee and hot cider on Friday evening, and it will reopen on Saturday morning to serve coffee, specialty beverages and hot cider. Activities on Oct. 19 will begin at 8 a.m. with breakfast. The menu will include egg sandwiches, apple dumplings, pastries and coffee. The auction, featuring items donated by school families and local businesses, will begin at 8:30 a.m. The craft room and gift certificate store will both be open. Those who cannot make it to the school event may bid on a separate online auction. Bids can be placed from Thursday, Oct. 17, through noon on Thursday, Oct. 31. Bidders can visit www.biddingforgood.com/ ConestogaChristian for more details. This year’s main auction items in the live auction will include handmade quilts, furniture and artwork. “We have an original painting of Windsor Mansion by (CCS alumnus) Christopher Lanser that we are so appreciative of,” said Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. “Two other big items that we will have are a Yamaha dirt bike and a shed that was actually built by one of our CCS fathers who owns the Riviello Sawmill.” The handcrafted wooden shed, measuring 8 by 12 feet, is currently on display in front of the school building. Parris noted that it would be suitable for a children’s playhouse, a storage shed or a “she shed.” In addition to 150 gallons of heating oil and tickets to local attractions, other live auction items will include a family outing at Buck Hollow Llamas in Birdsboro, a onenight stay at the Mount Culmen Guest House in Narvon, two hot air balloon rides donated by the United States Hot Air Balloon Team and use of a vacation home in the Poconos. “We are trying to offer more experiences, rather than just material goods,” noted Heather Schreier, CCS development director. “We have quite a few of those this year.” Each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Some of the themes for this year’s baskets are “Get Ready for Christmas,” “Fishing/Camping/ Outdoors” and “Outdoor Movie Night.” A children’s area will open at 9 a.m. on Oct. 19. With the purchase of a wristband, children will be able to enjoy supervised entertainment, including activities, games and a bounce house. A food tent will be open on Saturday offering homemade apple dumplings, pork barbecue sandwiches, chicken corn soup, beef vegetable soup, hot dogs and ice cream. Complete details about the auction are available at the website and at www.face book.com/conestogachristianschool or by contacting Parris at 610-286-0353, ext. 402, or michelle.parris@conestogachristian.net. Photos of auction items are updated on a regular basis on the Facebook page. Overflow parking and a shuttle service will be available during the event at Conestoga Mennonite Church.

Apprentices Compete In Annual Competition Five local apprentices received top scores at the ABC Keystone’s annual Craft Competition on Sept. 21 at the chapter’s training facility in Manheim. Earning the top scores in their respective trades provides these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2020 ABC National Craft Competition to be held March 26, 2020, in Nashville, and they will each receive from the chapter an all-expenses-paid trip to the competition. All competitors received Home Depot gift cards. The fourth-year top-scoring apprentices represented five trades: carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal. ABC Keystone has a history of producing National Craft Championship medal winners representing the southcentral Pennsylvania area. The 2019 ABC Keystone local Craft Competition top scorers were Jarrad Fulgenzi of Lancaster, sheet metal, Frey Lutz Corp.; Bradley Gerberich of Carlisle, HVAC, Penn State Construction; Sean Herr of Lancaster, electrical, John E. Fullerton Inc.; Jeremy Spangler of Conestoga, plumbing, Haller Enterprises Inc.; and Brandon Thomas of Ronks, carpentry, Warfel Construction Company. The timed competition followed a similar format as the upcoming national competition, and apprentices were challenged to follow plans to craft projects that tested their skills, knowledge, and attention to safety. The competition has two components: the written test, which counts for 25% of the total score, and the practical hands-on competition, which counts for 75% of the total score. In addition to showcasing their top-quality work, the competitors must also adhere to strict safety standards. The Keystone Chapter’s Pennsylvania-registered apprenticeship program offers education in seven trades and focuses on hands-on training under the guidance of experienced instructors.
