“Last year was fabulous,” said Jaiden Brandt, associate pastor of ministries with Pine Grove Church, of the 2023 Trunk or Treat held at the church, 1194 Reading Road, Bowmansville. “We had 750 to 800 people (again), and it went extremely well.”
“(We want) to be a presence and a safe environment for family and kids.”
This year’s fourth annual Trunk or Treat will also be held at the church. The event, which is slated for Saturday, Oct. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m., will involve more than 20 vehicles with decorated trunks lined up in the parking lot.
Food, candy, fun
Attendees are welcome to wear costumes to the Trunk or Treat. The rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the same location.
The free event will begin with registration. Attendees will receive a gift and instructions for the evening before visiting the themed trunks. Among the trunk decoration themes will be New
York City, rubber ducks, football, racing, Fruits of the Spirit, and science lab. A “Wonka”-themed trunk and a trunk based on the movie “Frozen” are also planned. Brandt described a farm-themed truck with a real pony and live chickens.
New this year will be Marian and Friends, a ventriloquist who will do 10-minute shows in the
church great room throughout the evening.
Yard games, including sack races and a balloon game, will be set up, and hayrides and a barrel train will be available for attendees to enjoy.
Free food items for visitors to munch on will include hot dogs, nachos, apples, and popcorn.
Brandt noted that since plenty
of candy is handed out as visitors view the trunks, dessert is not offered.
This year, the church is also using the event to contribute to a local ministry. “We are doing a food drive for the CrossNet (Food and Nutrition Center),” said Brandt. “It’s not required, but we are encouraging people to bring a nonperishable food item.” Brandt

It has been a few years since the members of the Evangelical United Methodist Church (EUMC) and the members of the New Holland United Methodist Church (NHUM) began joining together for activities. “We started doing more events together probably in 2019,” said Ray Voran of the two congregations, both located along Main Street in New Holland. Voran is now pastor of Friendship Church, a United Methodist Congregation, formed when NHUM and EUMC officially merged on April 3.

Jan Getz, past president of American Legion Auxiliary Post 662, knows a great deal about the organization, but it is when she talks about the ways the group gives back that the excitement in her voice can be heard. “We support programs at the Coatesville and Lebanon VA medical centers,” she said.
On Oct. 12, the auxiliary held an anniversary celebration at the New Holland American Legion Conestoga Post 662 banquet
center. The centennial began at 4 p.m. with a social hour. The program started at 5 p.m. with dinner and speakers, who included Tim Bender, mayor of New Holland, and Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District.
According to Getz, most of the auxiliary members who took part in planning the centennial celebration are surviving past presidents. Members of the committee included Getz, Sandy Beyers, Paula Houck, Michel Hughes, and Sue Noll. Current auxiliary officers are president Sheila Barber,

Voran recalled that COVID-19 restrictions may have slowed down the union of the two congregations, but by 2022, a discussion about joining together as one church was underway. “In July of 2023, the two congregations began worshiping together on Sunday mornings,” Voran stated. The congregants initially alternated between meeting at EUMC’s building at 276 W. Main St. - where EUMC’s congregation had met since about 1900 - for two weeks and gathering at NHUM, located at 120 W. Main St., for two weeks. That pattern continued until January, when the group began holding church at the 120 W. Main St. location at 9 a.m. each Sunday.
Church administrative council member Sandi Rapp said that the merger occurred when both churches held special charge conferences at the same time. During the conferences, the two congregations voted unanimously to merge, change the name, and accept a new mission statement. “There were subcommittees set up for the merger, and one of them was the name change committee,” explained Rapp, who noted that the committee followed a process and narrowed down the name choices prior to the conferences.
“We wanted to make it clear we were starting a new church,” said Voran of the new moniker. “We liked
“Friendship” embodies some of the ideals of the mission statement, which reads, “Welcoming All to Know Jesus, Through Love and Service. A Place to Belong.”
Friendship Church offers a free community meal in the church fellowship hall on the third Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. and a summer vacation Bible school that attracts up to 40 area children. The church traditionally holds a New Year’s pork and sauerkraut fundraiser meal.
Rapp pointed out that the church holds several book sales a year. The next book sale will take place during the 2024 Christmas on Main event on Saturday, Nov. 30. Rapp added that all funds currently being raised will help to cover the cost of a new organ that was recently purchased.
Music is a focus of the newly formed congregation. “There’s a lot of musical talent,” noted Voran. Rapp added that one member loves playing the organ, while another prefers guitar, and others play drums and electric keyboards. She pointed out that the church has a bell choir, and Voran said that the adult choir plans to present a Christmas cantata.
Joining forces means the new church has double the number of members of either of the former churches. “When we combined, there was a lot of energy,” said Rapp. “Everyone is getting along and loves what we’re doing.”
Foundation awards grant to Tec Centro Workforce Network
Fulton Forward Foundation, an independent, nonprofit private foundation funded by Fulton Bank, recently presented a $250,000 grant to the Tec Centro Workforce Network, a coalition of community advocates, public officials, philanthropic leaders and business professionals serving central Pennsylvania.
The funding, which will be distributed over the next five years, will support Tec Centro Workforce Network’s expansion of regional workforce development centers in the area, including new curriculum and equipment for each training center. The Network is focused on creating job training and
workforce development opportunities across Tec Centro organizations in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Berks counties, in addition to the establishment of a new Tec Centro in Harrisburg this year. In collaboration with area community colleges and training programs, Tec Centro provides skilled training that will lead to careers in high-demand areas, including allied health occupations, construction trades, culinary arts, commercial and industrial building maintenance and bank teller/customer service representatives.

Voran stated that having more children join in the weekly service before they attend Sunday school has added excitement as well.
“We don’t have a ton of kids, but Sunday, we had 10 for children’s sermon,” Voran said.

Getz detailed some of the activities the auxiliary organizes that involve the VA medical centers. “We participate in the country fair at the Lebanon hospital,” said Getz. “We do a bingo pizza party for the guys up there, and we do holiday boxes with treats in them.” Locally, Getz noted that the organization helps with a homeless veterans effort run by the American Legion.
The auxiliary also gives scholarships to area students including two given out every year to Garden Spot High School students as well as some students from other school districts who are entering a health care related field.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

Anchored Ministries names new interim director
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Anchored Ministries, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to people in need through a variety of programs including its mobile clothing closet, has welcomed Russ Williams as its new interim executive director. Williams has been passed the torch of leadership from co-founder and former executive director Erika Kanter, who, along with her husband, Ian, has stepped down from the ministry.
Williams, a resident of Morgantown, was a longtime volunteer for Anchored Ministries before being named to the new position. He is being supported in his new role by his wife, Frances, and their
three children, who will all be actively involved in the ministry.
“I attend MCC (Moving Communities to Christ Church) and there are a lot of people there that volunteer with Anchored. That’s how I connected with Ian,” said Williams, explaining how he got involved in the ministry. “My skill sets are on the technology side of the house, so I helped with their website and web presence and helped facilitate the sign-ups and the workflow they were utilizing for the different events like the Christmas program and back-to-school (giveaway). I was trying to make their processes more efficient and ultimately help more people in the community.”
Williams emphasized that the ministry will continue with its current programs under his leadership. “We are not looking at a huge change because the programs that are put in place are solid programs that benefit the community,” he noted.
Among the ministry’s programs are its mobile clothing closet, which offers new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories. The closet stops regularly at New Holland Church of Nazarene, CrossNet Ministries in New Holland and the Honey Brook Food Pantry.
Anchored Ministries also offers a community roadside stand at its headquarters in Elverson, which is open on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Inside the shed, visitors can find free Wawa breakfast sand-
wiches, books, toiletries and nonperishable food items from the ministry’s emergency food pantry.
The ministry recently completed its annual backto-school program, which offered new backpacks and school supplies to students in the Twin Valley School District (TVSD). The ministry is currently gearing up for its Christmas program, which asks community members to sponsor a child in the TVSD, providing gifts on the student’s wish list.
“At our back-to-school event, we gave out 300 backpacks to kids between kindergarten and 12th grade, and we handed out 1,600 pieces of clothing,” Williams reported. “Last year for the Christmas program, we had 400 kids we sponsored and got their entire Christmas wish list shopped for. We could not do that without the help of the community.”
In fact, Williams pointed out, all Anchored Ministries charitable programs are supported by the community. “As a nonprofit, there is no source of revenue or income except through the generosity of the people willing to give,” he said. “It speaks volumes of the community.”
Williams also credits the volunteers who donate their time to the ministry, as well as part-time staff members Meredith Rumer and Melissa Werner. “There is a fantastic team that works inside the Anchored building - Meredith and Melissa,” he stated. “They are responsible for the programs’ execution both from
the clothing closet side and the outreach programs. They are really doing the yeomen’s work of processing and working with volunteers to sort the clothing and get the trailers loaded and organizing the collection and distribution of supplies. They are the real heroes behind Anchored Ministries.”
The ministry is always in need of donations and additional volunteers. “Financial donations are always appreciated and are used directly to help serve both the programs and the different outreaches that we do,” said Williams. “Volunteers are needed at events to help with set up and teardown and to build relationships with people during events.”
Williams added that all services and goods offered by Anchored Ministries will always be offered free of charge. “There is not a single program or event that we charge for. Everything is really dependent on the local community,” said Williams. “Our overall goal is to show the love of Christ to everyone we encounter, and we are able to that because so many people care about others.”
Anchored Ministries is located at 40 S. Chestnut St., Elverson. For more information, including the mobile clothing closet schedule, visit www .anchoredministries.org or www.facebook.com/ AnchoredMinistriesPA. Those with questions may email Williams at russ@ anchoredministries.org.

When Aaron’s Acres reaches out and touches lives, often the result is hugs. Aaron’s Acres is expanding its footprint, flexing its muscles, strengthening its brand and creating more hugs.
The local nonprofit is adding staff members, adding programs and bringing more individuals under its umbrella, all in an attempt to satisfy needs and perform greater good.
“Over our first 26 years, we created the organization, built programs and established ourselves,” said Risa Paskoff, who’s been Aaron’s Acres’ executive director from the start. “We’re now taking it to the
next level. This is a major step for us. We want to present ourselves more professionally. This expansion is going to be on so many different levels. One of our dreams is to continue to be a family resource. We’re helping families navigate the journeys they have with individuals with disabilities.”
Located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, Aaron’s Acres supports and provides recreational programs for children and young adults with disabilities like autism, Down syndrome, epilepsy, spina bifida and cerebral palsy, as well as their families. Aaron’s Acres’ programs, some of which are seasonal in nature, emphasize social -
ization and communication skills.
Since its inception in 1998, Aaron’s Acres has focused on Lancaster, Dauphin, Berks, York, Lebanon and Perry County individuals who are between the ages of 5 and 21 and have disabilities. But Aaron’s Acres’ new programming, which will begin in November, will continue the nonprofits’ more recent efforts to reach individuals with disabilities who are up to age 40.
“There’s this huge need,” said Paskoff. “The need is created by people who are graduating from high school. We’re adding programs and a lot more ages, and we’re hoping to continue to add more pro-
grams. We are being true to who we are by continuing to meet the mission. We are responding.”
By adding more times and making programs more available to older individuals with disabilities, Aaron’s Acres is expanding its cooking, arts and community services programs. Aaron’s Acres is also looking at ways to expand its sports programming in an attempt to build on the momentum created by its sponsorship of the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League.
The new programming will allow Aaron’s Acres to serve another 25 individuals with disabilities between the ages of 21 and 40.

Stress management webinar set for farmers
Penn State Extension will offer a webinar on managing stress on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 1 to 2 p.m. The workshop is designed to help people understand and manage the unique stressors of farming. The program will explore the factors contributing to farm stress, the symptoms and consequences, and how people can measure their own stress levels. Using practical tools such as the ABC Model of Stress, the workshop will guide attendees through fostering self-confidence and cultivating mindfulness as key strategies for managing stress. People will also receive tips on creating a positive state of mind and
Safety tips for pet owners
Newly adopted pets waste little time becoming beloved members of a household. But much like young children, pets are a significant responsibility, and they rely on their human caretakers to ensure their safety. To help ensure a pet’s health and happiness, people may follow a few tips, courtesy of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Old Farm Veterinary Hospital, and Security.org.
Pet owners may consider installing an indoor and outdoor security camera system. Having eyes on pets while they are alone at home may enable a quick response should something happen.
Pet food should not be left outdoors overnight. Dog and cat foods can attract other animals, such as bears, raccoons, foxes, and opossums, depending on where a person lives. Wild animals grow accustomed to receiving easy meals, which could decrease their trepidation about being around a home or yard. Run-ins between pets and wild animals should be avoided.
People should not use a retractable leash. Walking a pet on a non-retractable leash allows better control of the animal in the event of an encounter with a person or another animal.
people should vaccinate companion animals against common parasites and other pests.
Microchipping is also advisable. Microchips not only protect pets should they get lost, but they also

practicing stress management techniques. This event is free of charge, but registration is required by visiting https://extension.psu .edu and searching for “Essential Skills: Managing Stress.” A link to the recorded webinar will be emailed to registrants after the live event, and the recording will be accessible for six months.
The workshop is part of the Essential Skills Series: Harness the Power of Interand Intra-Personal Skills to Elevate Your Career. Some materials in this series were funded by the Department of Labor as part of the Animal Science Apprenticeship Program.
It is important to be cautious with chemicals. Pet owners should consider any chemicals they use in their yard, including pesticides and weed killers, as well as cleaning products used indoors. Pets can ingest or inhale these products and get sick.
Potential choking hazards should be picked up from the floor so that pets will not swallow them. These items include string, small pieces of toys, and rawhide bone fragments.
Before starting a car when it is cold outside, families that allow their cats outdoor access should thump on the car hood. Cats sometimes take shelter near a warm engine block, and they can become injured if a person starts the car while they are under the hood.
Pets should be kept up to date on their vaccinations. Whether pets never step outdoors or have free rein,

PennDOT posts contest for students
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites high school students from across the state to participate in the eighth annual PennDOT Innovations Challenge, which encourages students to use their problem-solving, creative and strategic thinking abilities to solve real-world transportation challenges in a competition among their peers. The Innovations Challenge is open to all students in grades nine through 12, regardless of their school’s learning model.
For this year’s challenge, students are asked to develop a cost-effective, innovative solution that may help PennDOT more effectively increase awareness of seat belt safety and change behavior to improve roadway safety. PennDOT is committed to continuously improving roadway safety, and the agency works to do so using a multifaceted strategy, which involves promoting behavioral programs and implementing infrastructure improvements.
Regional Innovations Challenge winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT secretary and a panel of judges, which will determine the statewide winner. For this year’s challenge, four organizations are
providing a combined total award of $6,000 to the statewide winning team. These organizations are the Transportation Policy and Education Foundation, an educational arm of the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC); the American Council of Engineering Companies of PA (ACEC/PA); the Mid-Atlantic Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (MASITE); and the Intelligent Transportation Society of Pennsylvania (ITSPA).
For complete details, visit www.penndot.pa.gov/ innovation and click on the Innovations Challenge tile on the right side of the page. The submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 31, 2025.

Tdap vaccines available at Giant and Martin’s pharmacies
Following a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is on the rise, the Giant Company announced that Tdap vaccines are now available in all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.
Whooping cough is a serious respiratory disease that can be life-threatening for
infants. The CDC recommends Tdap vaccinations for everyone with booster doses every 10 years or sooner if the person is pregnant or injured. This vaccine is a combination of shots that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.
Giant and Martin’s pharmacies in Pennsylvania can vaccinate customers age 18 and up without
a prescription
If customers are unsure if they are in need of a Tdap vaccine, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists can look at their medical history and determine eligibility. Walk-in vaccinations are available, but customers can save time by booking an appointment online at www.giantfoodstores. com/pages/tgc-vaccines or www.martinsfoods
.com/pages/tgc-vaccines. Customers must bring photo ID and a prescription insurance card. Parental consent is required, and a parent or guardian must be on-site.
In addition, customers can visit any in-store Giant or Martin’s pharmacy to receive their flu vaccination. Flu and pertussis vaccines can be given together.
