New Holland - The Land Of Locally Owned Markets BY ANN MEAD ASH
one of the patriarchs of the three ELANCO-area grocery stores grew up thinking he would own a supermarket. “It was never John Yoder’s goal in life to own and operate a grocery store, let alone a restaurant, pharmacy, gift shop, or gas station, reads the Yoder’s Country Market history. Bill Clisham, who owns the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, located on Route 23 at the west end of New Holland, with his wife, Amy, originally went to college for computer science, and in the 1960s quarry truck driver Marvin Weaver, who grew Shady Maple from a roadside stand owned by the parents of his wife, Miriam, once dreamed of owning a dairy farm. The greater New Holland area Shady Maple is in East Earl - is blessed with three locally owned grocery stores that bring the residents fresh produce and dairy products, homemade baked goods, and more. Bill, who came to own the Bargain Market in 2016, recently speculated as to the stores’ success. “I think it has to do with the dedication of the families running the businesses, he said. “ W hether it’s us or Yoder’s or Shady Maple, we have all remodeled to keep our stores fresh (for customers).
anniversary on Dec. 1. Until recently, Denise and her husband, Micah, managed the restaurant together. Her sister, Dina, and Dina’s husband, dairy farmer Kevin Stoltzfus, influenced the family to add a dairy processing plant to the store in 2007, which was the last time Yoder’s expanded. John grew up on a dairy farm, but as a young adult worked as a meat cutter and owned a meat concession. The store originally included a snack bar, but after the snack bar closed in 1984, John added a restaurant, originally called Yoder’s Steak House. Soon the restaurant format changed from steak house to buffet-style, and added banquet rooms to seat up to 800. Between 1987 and 2004, a gift shop, the Petal Perfect Flower Shop, a full-service pharmacy, and the fuel island and car wash on Main Street became part of the Yoder’s complex. When the dairy processing plant was opened, Yoder’s began selling its own milk and ice cream. Denise explained that the Golden Guernsey milk contains a different protein than most cow’s milk, so it is creamier, but also easier for some people with lactose intolerance to digest. Denise noted that digital coupons are now being offered and curbside pickup is scheduled to start in November.
A little over 2 miles up Route 23 is the Shady Maple Farm Market, part of the area landscape for more than 50 years. From a roadside produce stand under some maple trees to a block building first offering groceries in 1970 to the present 130,000-square-foot building, the organization has always been a family-run business. The founding Weavers’ sons, Phillip and Linford, officially became co-presidents in 2015, and members of the next generation are now becoming involved. Shady Maple is known for its produce, which includes more than 300 varieties - 40 varieties of apples alone - and its baked goods. The bakery has remained true to the same shoo fly pie recipe for 40 years and carries four sizes of chocolate whoopie pies, selling more than 130,000 of the confections in 2019 alone. During the store’s 2020 meat sale, the store sold about 70,000 pounds of hamburger patties. The deli serves more than 600 customers each Saturday. Each New Holland-area grocery store offers something unique to area shoppers, and each strives to give back to area residents. “You’re part of the community, and you’re reinvesting in the community, Bill said. “We have such a giving community, added Amy. “So very giving.

Bill started his career working at Yoder’s as a teenager. When he graduated from college with a degree in business administration, he became the grocery store manager. He remained with Yoder’s through many expansions. In February of 2015, he read an article about how Grocery Outlet had purchased Amelia’s stores and was changing over to an owner-operator model. He and Amy met with executives in Emoryville, Calif., and they visited stores. At first, they did not think the New Holland store would be available to them, but Bill recalled being told, “You live in New Holland, (so) why would we send you somewhere else? The store is based on an opportunistic buying concept. Bill noted that the Bargain Market model is different from a conventional market, where there are many national players. He explained that a discount market is a niche market that can offer brand-name items at discount prices, along with fresh produce and meat and local dairy and eggs. At Yoder’s Country Market, also on Route 23 across from Garden Spot High School, Denise Zimmerman, daughter of John and Darlene Yoder, is slated to eventually become the organization’s CEO. She is working closely with her father as the store approaches its 40th

According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a destination somewhere in Pennsylvania. GUN &Ammo Mart Ekdahle noted. “I applied for a Sierra Club grant and we won $500 to create a hummingbird/pollinator garden to go along the Nature Trail.” She said that the efforts are important because the Conestoga Creek that runs through Poole Forge is at the headwaters of the Conestoga River, which eventually makes its way to the Chesapeake Bay. “This is especially critical in our role to clean up the
waterways that travel into the Chesapeake Bay,” Ekdahle said. “We are hoping to inspire others to do the same.” Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

Although Historic Poole Forge is known for its history and scenic value, it is also a site that is dedicated to environment and conservation efforts, particularly those that involve the Conestoga Creek, which runs through the property. Because of a major project that included creek reconstruction work, Poole Forge was featured in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife 2019 Annual Report. The report recognizes only one conservation project from each state. “It’s a pretty big deal that they chose us as the project to highlight from the state of Pennsylvania,” said Dawn Rise Ekdahle, executive director of Poole Forge. “I am interested in the historic aspect (of the location), but my background is in ecology and the environment. I have a strong passion to improve the environment.” The project was a collaboration between the Lancaster Conservation District, U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. “Last year, I applied to the Lancaster Conservation District for a grant to do some creek reconstruction to help (prevent) erosion and to protect the large sycamore trees that we have along the creek at the back of the park, adjacent to our new Nature Trail area,” Ekdahle explained. “We won the grant, which was funded through Exelon, for $57,000.” The work was performed by the Fish and Wildlife Service with the help of Pheasants Forever, a nonprofit conservation organization. Approximately 900 feet of the Conestoga Creek was reconstructed through the installation of mudsills and rock and hemlock log structures, which protect the creek bank and trees along the banks and prevent erosion. “This created a new habitat for fish and freshwater organisms, better aeration for the water and cleaner water with less silt and debris from the banks,” said Ekdahle. “The water was immediately cleaner, and we are already seeing a more diverse fish and wildlife habitat. So, doing the project has been a tremendous success.” Nathaniel Straw from the Lancaster County Conservation District and Adam Smith from U.S. Fish and Wildlife were the project leaders. “They came back and did a children’s ecology program in the summer of 2019,” Ekdahle noted. “We had about 25 to 30 kids attend, and they taught them the importance of water quality and improving the creek.” The work at the site also included three other complementary projects. “With the Chesapeake Bay Alliance funding and volunteers, we planted hundreds of native trees and shrubs,”

Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before

Pauline H. Engle Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,
Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.
In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

message of encouragement and purity in a conference with a theme based on the book of Esther. “A lot of her messages are about how we as women of faith and young ladies in Christ can just shine and be true to our beliefs,” said Feveryear. Jenkins has said that her vision is to lead her generation into authentic relationship with Christ to experience joy, peace, hope, and confidence. Known for her passion in helping others to grow their faith, Jenkins has a focus on teens and young women. Roberts, who was a high school student when she appeared on “The Voice,” now lives in Nashville. She took part in the 2017 tour called “The Gospel Through Girls & Guitars,” releasing her first album, “Bigger Than Me,” that same year. In 2018, she signed with Starstruck Records. She has released several singles. “(Roberts) performed with Abraham Productions on
the Beyond Amazing tour,” reported Feveryear. “She spreads a message through Christian country music … about how she can be on television and still exemplify Christ.” Although the conference is geared to women in their teens through 30s, Feveryear noted that there will be topics that appeal to older women as well. Those who purchase tickets will be able to view the conference for 24 hours following the event. More information about the conference may be found by searching for “This Day” on Facebook, selecting Events, and clicking on “For Such A Time As This Virtual Women’s Conference.” Readers who wish to purchase tickets may visit www.itickets.com/events/449 219 or call iTickets at 800-9659324.
