The 2019 event will be held at the church on Saturday, Nov. 9. A lunch buffet will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Takeout meals will also be available. The Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans do not meet on a regular basis. The two women who oversee the program, Jean Summers and Kathy Baker, coordinate picking up quilts and afghans from members and then see that the comforters are delivered to one of four area hospice centers to be distributed to veterans. However, on a summer morning, 14 members of the group gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes in New Holland to get better acquainted and discuss a possible future fundraiser that is being planned with the Upper Leacock Township War See Patriotic Stitchers pg 4

JFS To Show Free Film On Warsaw Ghetto By Ann Mead Ash

Patriotic Stitchers Create Comfort And Warmth For Veterans

Group members from the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans met to get better acquainted and display the blankets they had made for veterans at four area hospices. More quilters, knitters, and crocheters are welcome to join.

“This story is powerful because it speaks of people in the Warsaw Ghetto and how they clearly saw what their future was like,” said Bob Ruder. Ruder further explained that Jewish Family Services (JFS) was bringing “Who Will Write Our History,” a film written and directed by Roberta Grossman and executive produced by Nancy Spielberg, to Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz, on Monday, Nov. 11, as a followup to the group’s 2018 showing of “GI Jew.” Showings will be at 2 and 7 p.m. According to Ruder, the film goes back and forth in time, interspersing footage from World War II with present-day actors and actresses. “You See Free Film pg 3

To Save A Life … Or Two … Or More By Ann Mead Ash

Many years ago on a road trip, Dorlee Martin of Terre Hill and her husband, Darrel, saw a sign at a church asking for a kidney for someone in need of a transplant. Dorlee turned to Darrel and said, “Isn’t that awesome?” The idea of helping others through living organ donation stuck with Dorlee over the years that followed. “I always had this thought in the back of my mind that I would know someone who would need my kidney,” recalled Dorlee. When that did not happen, Dorlee decided to benefit a stranger … actually, several strangers, thanks to a kidney chain she started through the National Kidney Registry. Starting a kidney chain was See Organ Donor pg 5

Runner Dorlee Martin of Terre Hill donated a kidney in April to start a chain that benefited a number of recipients around the country. Dorlee was out running again one month after donating.

The organization is nonprofit, nondenominational, and nonsectarian. “We help everybody,” said Ruder. In recent years, JFS expanded its mission to include programs that members believed would interest the greater community. “We have done programs having to do with discrimination and with special needs children in schools … diversity … antiSemitism … and hate,” said Ruder. For Veterans Day 2018, the group decided to offer a free movie. “‘GI Jews’ gives you goosebumps,” said Ruder. “It was very moving and well received by the community.” Because of the positive response to the film, JFS decided to offer another film this Veterans

go from modern to archival, so you have to pay attention,” said Ruder. “It’s powerful. It’s something that … the community will find informative and educational. There are some lessons we should never forget.” The film tells the story of historian Emanuel Ringelblum, who led a group of journalists and others who were among the more than 400,000 people trapped in the Warsaw Ghetto by Nazis in 1940. The group determined to keep journals that would tell their story to the people who would come after them.

Author To Discuss Book On Bowery Mission Community members may interact with author Jason Storbakken as he presents his new book, “Bowery Mission: Grit and Grace on Manhattan’s Oldest Street,” on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at Groffdale Mennonite Church, 168 N. Groffdale Road, West Earl Township. In the 19th century, the Bowery was one of New York City’s most notorious streets, a magnet for gangsters, hucksters, and hobos. Despite sweeping

changes, it is still all too often the end of the road for troubled war veterans, drug addicts, the mentally ill, the formerly incarcerated, and others generally down on their luck. Against this backdrop, for 140 years, Christians have been coming together at the Bowery Mission to offer hearty meals, hot showers, clean beds, warm clothes, and the help homeless individuals need to get off the streets and back on their feet.

In the new book, Storbakken, a recent Bowery director, retraces that colorful history of the area and profiles some of the illustrious and infamous characters who have made the Bowery Mission an iconic New York institution. The book offers a lens through which to better understand the changing faces of homelessness, of American Christianity, and of New York City itself. The author will be signing books at the event.

Memorial Association (ULTWMA), which helps to support the group. During the meeting, Baker and Summers explained briefly how the organization started about two years ago when a woman who was a social worker at a Lancaster hospice wanted to do something for veterans. The woman consulted her mother, and the pair thought making an afghan or quilt would be a good way to honor veterans. Both Baker and Summers signed on to help, and when the founder of the group could not continue running the organization, the duo took over, renaming the organization Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. Each woman who attended the meeting was asked to introduce herself to the others and tell how she became involved. Ronnie Miller told the group that she quilts and was working with another group called Cradle

Stitchers. “I have made 35 quilts for veterans,” she noted. Baker and Summers said that they will keep track of the number of pieces each group member turns in. Barbara Schrodi said that she has been making blankets for veterans for two years. “I find it very relaxing,” she said. “It’s creative, and you’re doing it for a good purpose.” Other members of the group noted that they love to crochet and that making the blankets is a nice pastime. Each of the women brought a recently completed quilt or afghan to be given to a veteran. Each piece incorporated red, white, and blue in some way. When a blanket is donated, Baker or Summers affixes a label to it that reads: “Thank you for your service to our country. Made for you especially by,” followed by the maker’s first name and final initial and then the group’s name. Each blanket is

photographed when it is received, and the photo is placed in an album. The organization now boasts about 35 volunteers, mostly recruited from area churches, but they are always in need of more volunteers who can crochet, knit, or sew. When the organization first began donating blankets, the creations went to one hospice in Lancaster and the Lebanon VA Hospital. Currently, the Stitchers are taking blankets to AseraCare Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Services, and Hospice and Community Care. Group members are grateful for the help they receives from ULTWMA, but they will accept monetary donations and donations of red, white, and blue fabric or yarn, batting, or other material. Readers who would like to donate stitching time, funds, or material to the group may call 717-553-3161 or 484-888-3772.

Organ Donor from pg 1 important to Dorlee. Through the kidney chain, Dorlee’s donation of a kidney to someone in Boston initiated a chain that resulted in kidney donations also going to someone in Wisconsin and someone else in Virginia. Dorlee began the process a little more than a year ago, when she noticed a Facebook post that said a friend’s husband had donated a kidney to someone he did not know. “I contacted him because of my interest,” said Dorlee. Dorlee learned that the donor had originally been interested in donating part of his liver, but when he

learned that his age was pre-emptive, he was told he could be a living kidney donor. Encouraged by what she learned, Dorlee made the decision to move forward. “When God calls you to do something, He just keeps tapping you and tapping you,” she said. “I couldn’t ignore God for the rest of my life.” She turned to Darrel for affirmation. “He was surprised because he had not thought I was serious,” she said, adding that he was supportive of her decision. “He loves me and wants me to be healthy.” Her three adult children were also supportive. In October 2018, she began completing

R049114

her health history paperwork. “I was overwhelmed with how blessed I was with a healthy body,” said Dorlee, who lost 50 pounds about a decade ago and has since run several half marathons. “I was called to help somebody. I was given a healthy body for a reason,” she said. Testing that followed the initial screening included blood and urine tests, a CT scan with contrast, an EKG, and a glucose tolerance test, along with a psychiatric evaluation. “They are really diligent to make sure kidneys are healthy and to make sure donors are healthy,” said Dorlee. Once Dorlee was approved, her name was entered into a pool of candidates. “A team at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center meets twice a month to discuss whether people who have been evaluated are candidates or not,” said Dorlee, whose surgery was scheduled for April 9. Dorlee and Darrel arrived at Hershey very early that morning. She explained that the kidney is removed through a procedure that uses laparoscopic technology, which is less invasive than traditional surgery. The procedure was done on a Tuesday, and by Thursday afternoon, Dorlee was ready to go home. Darrel remained home with her for a bit, and he was surprised to learn that on Friday evening she was ready to head back to Hershey to attend an event for donors. There are restrictions during the recovery period after an organ donation. Dorlee was limited in how much she was allowed to lift, and she was not allowed to run for a month. Instead, she race walked several miles a day. “I didn’t want to use it as an excuse to not be fit,” said Dorlee, who added that though her energy waned initially, it has returned. She has been instructed to avoid certain pain medications and testing with contrast dye in the future. She said that all costs associated with her donation were covered by the recipient’s insurance. Looking back, Dorlee is grateful that she was able to donate. “I love to give generously, and because I’m not a wealthy person, this was one way that I could give sacrificially and bless someone else in a way that money never could,” she said. She encourages anyone who is interested in learning more about living donation to email her at dorleemartin@gmail.com.

Spartans Top Octorara, Fall to Hempfield by Ara Grigorian

“Hempfield is always a tough program to play,” said DiPiano. “Usually they are a challenge and one of the better teams in the league. They have a lot of offensive weapons, big hitters. They’re also good defensively.” While Garden Spot’s Logan Martin had a match-high nine kills, Jailene Lugo had a team-high eight kills for Hempfield. Kylie Ulrich had six kills,

three blocks and two digs “We didn’t pass as well as we had we were making too many errors passing,” said DiPiano. “Sometimes there would be setting issues or hitting. Things wouldn’t gel and they got us out of system. It became tough to play catch-up. Our game plan was to try and serve them tough. We would get a few points and they would go on long runs.”

The Spartans will take their record into the District Three Class 3A playoffs as the third-seeded team, starting with a home match against number 14 seed Wyomissing “Everybody is healthy, thankfully,” said DiPiano. “I feel we’ve had good practices going into the districts opening match. Every match from here on out could be our last.”

The Garden Spot girls’ volleyball team reached the Lancaster-Lebanon League semifinals with a dominant 30 defeat of Octorara on Friday, October 18. The match was part of a quarterfinals doubleheader at Landisville with the host Hempfield Black Knights sweeping Ephrata. The Spartans, who improved to 15-2, won the opening set 25-9 and never looked back. “We hadn’t seen Octorara this year at all,” said Spartans’ head coach Lauren DiPiano. “The girls served tough in the first set. “Octorara is a good team, but we held them off pretty well,” she said of her squad, which won the second set 25-16. “We got a little lackadaisical in the third set. I was hoping we would have momentum going into the semifinals.” The Spartans won that third set 25-20 to finish off a sweep in which Olivia Usner recorded 14 digs and seven kills. Logan Martin had a team-high eight kills while junior Abby O’Neill spread out 27 assists. Hempfield’s victory in the quarterfinals sent the Black Knights into the semis against the Spartans at Garden Spot on Monday night, October 21. The Spartans have five seniors who have incentive to keep winning in the post-season. Their mission, like the rest of the team and the coaching staff, was to reach this level and to keep winning. “We had two-a-day practices in the preseason,” DiPiano noted. “Now you can look back and see why we worked so hard. Also the girls are becoming students of the game. “We’ve recognized our weaknesses and see what other teams are going to try and do against us,” added the coach. “We’re adjusting and trying to learn more about our opponents.” FOOTBALL The Garden Spot football team not only scored two or more touchdowns for a fourth straight game, the Spartans racked up 343 total yards against Manheim Central on Friday, October 18. Quarterback Jesse Martin scored both Garden Spot touchdowns. But the Barons’ big early lead helped them remain undefeated in Section Two play (50, 7-2 overall) as they clinched at least a tie for the section title with a 65-13 win. Garden Spot fell to 0-9 (0-6 league). Martin completed 15 of 28 pass attempts for 159 yards, including a five-yard touchdown toss to Derrick Lambert. Martin also had 10 carries for 30 yards and scored on a four-yard quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter. John Dykie churned up 116 yards on the ground, carrying the ball 13 times and averaging 8.92 yards per carry. He also had two catches for seven yards. Ethan Good had a good night as one of Martin’s top targets, catching five passes for 91 yards. He tied Joel Martin for the most catches as the latter gained 40 yards through the air. The Barons’ Colby Wagner scored on a 68-yard pass from Evan Simon in the first quarter. Simon himself scored two huge rushing touchdowns of 58 and 91 yards in the second quarter as the Barons built a 49-0 halftime lead. The Central quarterback finished with nine completions for 224 yards and four TD’s while also running for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Judd Novak came in and completed all four passes for 100 yards and two more touchdowns.

We are not connected to the church, but we have a great relationship with them.” Students, led by Jack Greenly, CCS director of student life, completed projects at the church such as working on the flower beds and cleaning the church kitchen. “Students planted flowers, pulled weeds and washed windows,” said Greenly. “The church had some of their members here leading the groups. It’s a partnership between the church and the school even though we are not affiliated.” In addition to Greenly, the Service Day was organized by student leadership, headed by senior chaplain Emily Wenger and junior chaplain Kayla Howell. According to www.conestoga christian.net, the service day activity is in keeping with the school’s mission statement that reads, in part, “To provide a quality educational program for preschool through 12th-grade students in an environment which develops critical thinking, nurtures Christ-like character and equips students for a life of discipleship and service.” Conestoga Christian School is located at 2760 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. assembled 10,000 packets of food in conjunction with Meals of Hope, a food packaging organization that provides nourishing meals to people in need in the United States. The activity took place at Conestoga Mennonite Church, located across the street from the school. The meals were packed for the Twin Valley Food Pantry, which is housed at the church. According to www.mealsofhope.org, the organization provides several different varieties of food packets, including macaroni and cheese, cinnamon and apple oatmeal, pasta and tomato sauce and bean and rice casserole. CCS students packed a chicken-flavored rice and vegetable soup mix that becomes a nourishing meal when added to boiling water. All the food packing materials were delivered to the church the week of Oct 14. Since each meal costs 40 cents, the students had to raise the needed $4,000 through donations. “We are $800 short of reaching our $4,000 goal,” reported Michelle Parris, CCS admissions director. Those who would like information about donating to the project may email ken.parris@conestogachristian.org or visit www.conestogachristian .net/service-day-2019. The church also served as the location for a chicken barbecue drive-through. “In addition to packing meals, our middle and high school students (worked at) the church,” Parris said. “This was a way of serving and showing our

Play from pg 1 The youths of Hinkletown Mennonite Church will stage a production at Cocalico Middle School, 650 S. Sixth St., Denver. The cast will perform “Second Chance Christmas” and “Frantic Family Vacation” on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2 and 7 p.m. This will be the 43rd consecutive year that the church youths have presented a play. Written by Regina M. Ballard, the family-friendly plays follow the adventures and trials of the Stanton and Hill families as they interact on two separate occasions. The families find out what Christmas is really about when they are stranded together in “Second Chance Christmas.” As their family bond grows, the characters clash in “Frantic Family Vacation” when a planned peaceful weekend away turns into a series of humorous mishaps. Admission is free, and attendees can reserve their seats 90 minutes prior to each performance. A freewill offering will be received at intermission to support Vida Missions and MDS hurricane relief. For more information, readers may call Hinkletown Mennonite Church at 717-354-5213 or search for “Hinkletown Youth Play” on Facebook.

Dutch Apple To Stage “Holiday Inn” Irving Berlin’s classic “Holiday Inn” will be presented at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 14, through Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020. Based on the 1942 film starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, “Holiday Inn” tells the tale of Jim as he leaves the bright lights of show business to settle down on a farmhouse in Connecticut and discovers that life just is not the same without

The show includes classic songs by Berlin, including “Shaking the Blues Away,” “Heat Wave,” “Blue Skies,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “It’s a Lovely Day Today,” “Easter Parade,” and “White Christmas.” From Thanksgiving to the Fourth

of July, “Holiday Inn” features dance numbers, comedy, and a heartwarming story. Performances are held on Tuesday through Sunday evenings with selected matinees. Tickets for dinner and the show are available, with discounts offered for children age 12 and under and students ages 13 to 18. Group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more.
