Making giving easier CrossNet Christmas program handbook created BY ANN MEAD ASH
isa Kerstetter, community events manager with CrossNet Ministries, saw the need for winter coats jump when CrossNet held its fall drive this year. In August, the need for backpacks had jumped too. Having provided Christmas gifts to more than 500 ELANCO School District children in 2022, Kerstetter anticipates serving more than 600 this year. To make it easier for donors to sponsor local children, at a suggested donation of $100 per child, Kerstetter has created the “CrossNet Christmas Gift Giving Guide - Sponsor/Donor Handbook.” The 20-page guide covers everything from the mission of the program - to ease financial burdens, build resources, and support underresourced families - to how-to steps for organizing a giving tree. All the program basics are explained, along with the many giving options that are offered. “Everything is in one

Nearly a century later, the trends and styles of those who lived in the early to mid-1900s remain instantly recognizable and deeply appreciated by many throughout the United States. Americans who were born in the first three decades of the 20th century are commonly referred to as the Greatest Generation, and with ample reason: This generation includes the individuals who weathered calamities like the Great

Depression and fought in the Second World War. America as we know it was largely shaped by the Greatest Generation. Many people pay tribute to its members by recreating the music, dancing and fashion of their time, including the participants of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s annual swing dance. The museum, which is located on 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host the event on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase in
Terre Hill resident Linda Saad, who co-coordinated the Water Day held in Terre Hill Park on Sept. 26 with Rhonda Hakundy of the Pennsylvania Southeast Region of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), begins preparing for the field day about three months in advance. “It takes three months to coordinate (with) volunteers, schools, and township (representatives),” Saad explained. Appropriately, on the day of the event, it rained. “It started pouring 15 minutes before the buses arrived,” recalled Saad.

But a little “liquid sunshine,” as Terre Hill Borough employee Valerie Gregory called the rain, did not dampen the spirits of the 300 fifthgrade students. The children were transported from local public elementary schools Blue Ball, Brecknock, New Holland - and Pathways, a hybrid Christian school, to the educational event where they participated from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. as guests of the ELANCO Source Water Collaborative. Saad and 25 volunteers were prepared to teach, assist with teaching, and direct students and school teachers to 10 stations representing five different water-quality topics. Groups of 20 to 30 students visited the stations for opportunities to learn about the water cycle, a rain garden, stream buffers, and pollution control and to view surface and ground water simulators that show how water and pollution move on and below the surface. A favorite station shows children how human waste is disposed of. “They
get flushed, and they move through the system, and they love that,” said Saad of the station, which is called “Where does your poop go?” “It’s interactive, so the kids move around.” This is the fourth time Water Day has been held in the park, and at each event the students have taken part in a service project. Past projects have included planting native trees and creating a rain garden. This year, supplies were provided for students to help plant a pollinator garden. Saad said that the field day was the brainchild of Terre Hill Borough Mayor Bob Rissler. “When we started, it was important to reach youth,” she recalled, noting that the collaborative had already made efforts to reach out to homeowners and the agricultural community. “Youth are the future of water quality in our county,” Saad added, noting that most county streams are impaired. Gregory pointed out that

water quality in local streams has improved in the last several decades due to changes in farming practices. “We have a lot of grants coming available to implement good management,” said Saad, who noted that more than $7 million was available last year to help implement practices that will aid in protecting the water. Many exhibitors will bring military vehicles to display at the museum, and the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will present a ceremony to salute veterans at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. In previous years, attendees of both Trains and Troops and the annual swing dance have arrived in period-accurate attire such as vintage military uniforms. “The weekend is a nice way to celebrate a different aspect of the 1940s, as well as explore the tie between railroads and the military,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the Railroad Museum. “The hall is always nice and full, and the music really makes the building come alive.” The swing dance has continued to grow in popularity since the tradition was started 20 years ago. Last year, the event drew more than 200 participants, the highest number of dancers to attend the swing dance to date. For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.

It started with the idea to hold a fundraiser for veterans, possibly a dinner. When that project did not come to fruition, Ephrata Lions Club member Kendra Rhinier still had a number of fundraising ideas in her head. One of them was to bring together veterans who are also artisans for a type of craft show. That idea grew to include nonprofit organizations that support veterans and other types of veteran-owned and associated businesses to create the first Veterans Expo to be held in the ballroom at the American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata, on Sunday, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rhinier has lined up more than 20 displays, including some featuring veterans who are artisans. Some create items using fractal burning and wood engraving. Patriotic-themed coasters and cutting boards will also be offered for sale. In addition, Semper Pie, a veteran-owned cheesecake company, will have a table, as will Team River Runner selling coffee. Nonprofit organizations that will be represented at the expo include Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans, a group that makes quilts and blankets for veterans, and Triggered 22, an entity that promotes awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder with a goal of preventing suicide. Local author Larry Alexander will be present to sign and sell copies of his military-themed books. There is no admission charge to attend the show, but

Anderson told the audience. “It was my childish idea that I would become a filmmaker and show black people as they really were to mitigate the terrible image of us that Hollywood had on the screen.” Hargrove hopes to digitize some of Anderson’s work for LancasterHistory’s collections in addition to materials that document her early life in Lancaster. Beginning on Friday, Nov. 17, Anderson will be featured among other artists in the exhibit “Black Lancastrians in the Arts: A Lasting Legacy” at LancasterHistory. Art shows to feature PCA&D alumni Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) will open dual exhibitions featuring the works of two alumni. “Earthling,” showcasing artworks by Leah Limpert Walt, Class of 2018, and “A Solitary Loop,” featuring artworks by Jason Herr, Class of 2016, will open in the college’s Main Gallery on First Friday on
Nov. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. Members of the public are also welcome to attend a free Artist Talk by Limpert Walt the same day at 3 p.m. in the college atrium. In recent years, PCA&D has offered an Alumni Artist in Residence program where the participating artist has an exhibition on PCA&D’s campus. Limpert Walt and

Herr were both PCA&D artists in residence at different times. Limpert Walt completed her residency in May 2023, and Herr was the artist in residence in 2020. Limpert Walt, a Lancaster-based adjunct instructor at PCA&D, served as the 2022-23 Fine Art Alumni Artist in Residence at the college. She also has studied at University of Delaware and Moore College of Art and Design, and she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and multiple awards from PCA&D. She has shown in Philadelphia, New York City, and throughout the lower Susquehanna Valley, and is co-founder of King St. Work-
shops. More information is available at www.leah limpertwalt.com. Herr, the college’s first Fine Art Alumni Artist in Residence, has shown in galleries in Lancaster, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New York City, Los Angeles, England, and France, and won Best in Show for the “Thrive” exhibit at the Sunshine Gallery in 2014. He has contributed illustration work for Mondo Zero press, Kus! comics, Lifted Brow magazine, and Future Islands. Herr’s artworks often examine the isolation and loneliness of the contemporary world. er to her,” Hargrove said. “I also graduated from McCaskey and Millersville. It became more real to me since she existed here in Lancaster, and she made these amazing documentaries that will be housed in the Smithsonian Institution.” Anderson now resides in Brooklyn, but she virtually attended the film screening for a question-and-answer session where she explained her motivation to become a filmmaker. “When I started going to the movies when I was 7 years old, I saw the stereotype of Hollywood’s notion of black people. We were always stupid. We were always shuffling along,”

The National Museum of African American History and Culture recognizes Madeline Anderson as the first African American woman to direct a televised documentary film. Anderson and her work are credited with paving the way for black women in the television industry, but many Lancaster residents may be unaware that she also grew up in Lancaster city. The renowned filmmaker is an alumna of McCaskey High School and Millersville University, and she went on to achieve national acclaim in her career. On Sept. 23, LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, held a film screening of two documentaries directed by Anderson. The first film, titled “Integration Report One,” was released in 1960, and it depicts the battle for racial equality in various cities across the United States. The second film, titled “I Am Somebody,” was released in 1970 to capture the troubles of black women who fought for better working conditions at a hospital in Charleston, S.C.
Shianne Hargrove, an information specialist at LancasterHistory, had the idea to feature Anderson’s work while she was working on a project for the organization’s Collections Up Close program in February. Collections Up Close is a series that offers tours to focus on specific items from LancasterHistory’s archive; during the tours, staff members and visiting scholars provide additional information on the historical relevance of each item. The goal of Hargrove’s project was to highlight black individuals from Lancaster who became accomplished artists, directors or actors. Hargrove was already familiar with Anderson’s work, but she rediscovered it in her research and embarked on a quest to find copies of Anderson’s documentaries. After six months of hard work and research, Hargrove located copies of the films with the help of Mabel Rosenheck, LancasterHistory’s director of education and exhibition planning. “I was a fan of (Anderson’s) work already - I had seen her documentaries in college - but realizing that she was a local black female filmmaker made me feel clos-
