Gifting In New Holland And Beyond CrossNet Prepares For Christmas Giveaway BY ANN MEAD ASH

isa Kerstetter, director of marketing and events with CrossNet Ministries, wants donors to the Christmas Gift Program to know that this year there is a new option for gifting to students in the ELANCO School District. “They could do a gift card drive,” explained Kerstetter, who noted that gift card drives will support a new portion of the giving program. “All the years that we have (held this), the teenagers have been hard to match because they are hard to shop for,” explained Kerstetter. “More and more kids were asking for gift cards, so I thought, ‘What if we offer that?’” The new option, for students in the ninth grade and above, will mean young people can ask for a gift card to a specific store and make their own purchases. “Instead of getting a pair of jeans they don’t like, they

L

can get something they like,” said Kerstetter, who is hoping to pair the gift cards with kits of personal care items. Organizers of the CrossNet Christmas Gift Program expect to serve more than 500 ELANCO School District children who regularly receive free lunches. To provide the program, CrossNet offers area residents the opportunity to take part in one or more of several giving programs. As in the past, participants may choose to sponsor a local family. Those opting for this route will receive a wish list for each child in the family. The list will include items children need and want, along with a reading suggestion. Individuals and groups that would like to sponsor a family should contact CrossNet at 717-355-2454 by Thursday, Nov. 10, so Kerstetter can match donors with families.

A Spiritual Journey

Mark Pearl dressed to play Messianic music

Mark Pearl’s childhood home in the greater northeast region of Philadelphia is not so many miles from Leola, but it is a different world culturally. Pearl’s life now is spiritually distant from his upbringing as well. Pearl’s penchant for playing Messianic music represents his journey from an 11-year-old who did not want to attend Hebrew school and lobbied for a Christmas tree rather than a menorah. By the time Pearl was 17, one of

his mother’s sisters, who had married a Christian, had convinced his parents to attend a Baptist church. Pearl was not any more enamored of church than he had been with Hebrew school. “I’m looking at Big Ben on the wall (because) I can’t wait for 12 o’clock so I can fly out of there,” recalled Pearl. “But God’s Word never goes void,” stated Pearl. “I would say I was born again in 1975.” From 1977 to 1979, Pearl did a stint in the Air Force. By the mid-1980s, Pearl was living with Christian See Mark Pearl pg 8

Spot Battles Mules For a Share of Section Three BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Garden Spot came up short in its quest to claim the Section Three title as the Spartans lost to LancasterLebanon League rival Solanco on the road Friday night, October 28. The Spartans, who finished the regular season at 7-3, could have earned at least a share of the section title with a win at Solanco. They came into the game with a 4-1 league record, facing an unbeaten (5-0) Solanco squad. What the Spartans did accomplish, however, in this successful 2022 campaign, was to gain 10th place in the District Three Class 5A power rankings, thus qualifying for the district playoffs. “This is our program’s first district playoff appearance since 2014,” Spartans head photo by Mona Steinhauer coach Matt Zamperini noted. In a battle for the share of the Section Two title, Garden Spot’s The Mules (10-0) actually Thomas O’Neill gets set to block Solanco’s Jordan Kephart in the needed to come from behind Mules 35-20 victory in Quarryville Friday, October 28. to take the lead and eventual-

ly gain the winning margin of 35-20. The always reliable Nick Gleason kicked a 23-yard chip shot through the uprights for a 3-0 early lead. After Solanco gained the lead on Brody Mellinger’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Cunningham, Spartans quarterback Kye Harting raced through an opening by his blockers and outran the Solanco secondary for an 80yard dash, making it 10-7. In the back-and-forth first quarter, Mellinger scored a rushing TD to make it 14-10. Cunningham’s four-yard run made it 20-10 before the half. Josiah Forren’s 87-yard kickoff return plus Mellinger’s two-point conversion gave the Mules a 28-10 lead. A lead that was reduced by 10 points thanks to another Gleason field goal and another Harting touchdown run. “Solanco is ranked sixth in the state for 5A schools,” Zamperini pointed out. “They are a senior laden team, and they execute very well. “We played them tough,” Zamperini, whose team received Honorable Mention for 5A state rankings, said. “Our guys fought until the end. We had our chances but fell short on a few plays.” In the District Three 5A playoffs format, the top four seeds - Solanco, Exeter, New Oxford and Gettysburg - have first-round byes. That opening round schedule includes the Spartans traveling to seventh-seeded Dover with the winner slated to play at Exeter. CROSS COUNTRY Garden Spot’s Gavin Reimers, Alan Krock and Josiah Smucker competed in the District Three 3A boys’ cross country championship race at Big Spring High School on October 29. Reimers led the Spartans with an 85th-place finish, registering 17:20 as his time. Krock ran the course in 17:49.90 while Smucker came in at 17:48.20 - only three places behind Krock’s 124th-place finish. Julia Hoover had a solid 21:32.3 as her time, representing the Garden Spot girls. She narrowly missed the top100 by placing 102 in the race.

Shop With A Cop from pg 1 the results of her efforts. “You see a difference from the time a child is dropped off by a parent or guardian in the morning, when they may be unsure or nervous, to when the parents pick them up,” she said, noting when the children prepare to go home, they are often laughing and hugging their assigned cop. “In those couple hours, the bond that is made between the officer and the child is amazing,” said Osborne. The third Shop With a Cop will be held at Lafayette Fire Company on Saturday, Dec. 3. Osborne hopes to pair at least 30 children in the countywide program with volunteer state police troopers, officers from East Lampeter Township Police Department, and officers from the SPCA and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Osborne is specifically looking to include children who have been the victim of a crime or involved in another unfortunate circumstance where police contact would benefit them. Those who wish to nominate a child for the program may visit http://camp cadetoflancastercounty.com /shop-with-a-cop. Links to sponsor a child are located on that website as well. Nomination forms for children to participate must be completed by Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Police officers and area children were paired up to take part in past Shop With a Cop countywide events. Nominations for children to take part in this year’s event are open now.

The elementary-age children and officers whom Osborne has paired up will travel together to Kohl’s on Lincoln Highway to shop. Each child will receive a $150 gift card to Kohl’s, so students may shop for family members. Prepared with lists of possible gifts, the students and officers will shop and then returned to the station, where the officers will help wrap the gifts. Each student will also receive a bag lunch before being picked up. Osborne has also created a “Troop J Lancaster Shop With a Cop” Facebook page, where she posts photos, updates, and other information about the event. “I receive a lot of feedback from parents and grandparents in the form of emails or Facebook messages,” she said, noting most of the correspondence

expresses gratitude and shares that a child loved being part of the program. “It makes the kids feel empowered to provide gifts for their family members,” said Osborne. “You think it’s just for the children, but it benefits the whole family.”

friends in Norristown who introduced him to the music of artist Keith Green. “(Green’s music) just blew me out of the chair,” said Pearl, who wanted to meet the singer until his friends informed him Green had been killed in a plane crash in 1982. When Pearl’s parents moved to Lancaster County, he joined them. In 2015, he began attending the Seed of Abraham - a Messianic congregation of Jewish and Gentile believers, then meeting in Lititz. Pearl became familiar with the music of Paul Wilbur, known for his Messianic worship songs, and Lamb, a Messianic group comprising Joel Chernoff and the late Rick Coghill.

Pearl began covering their tunes in his presentations. “I consider myself a Messianic Jew,” said Pearl, who wears a yarmulke and prayer shawl during his musical performances. “A lot of people in this area don’t know the Jewish side of the Gospel, and that’s what I present to them,” he said. “When you hear Messianic music, you feel you’re in Israel.” In addition to his solo presentations, Pearl has performed with the recently disbanded Lancaster Christian band known as Saved Renegade. Readers who would like to learn more about Pearl’s music may contact him at 717-645-3628 or email mmpearl@comcast.net.
