Holiday gifts galore Church to hold two sales in one BY ANN MEAD ASH
hen opportunity knocks, members of Our Lady of Lourdes Church are not afraid to answer. Years ago, the church held an annual holiday bazaar, and it seemed appropriate to bring back the tradition in the fall of 2023. At the same time, longtime parish member Bunny Ford decided to liquidate her clothing business, and she contacted the parish council about donating some of the items to the church. A few parishioners responded by taking the helm of that project. The result is a holiday bazaar and clothing sale to be held at the church, 150 Water St., New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 18; from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include a number of vendors, discounted clothing for women, and food items for purchase. Both sales will be held inside the church, and attendees are asked to enter at the Parish Center doorway.

According to New Holland Radio Shack owner Steve Loewen, shopping in the ELANCO area means giving back to your neighbors and friends. “Local businesses are the ones that give door prizes to the Scouts and the football team,” said Loewen. Gina Dissinger, owner of the Lickity Split ice cream and sandwich shop, concurred, saying, “Shopping locally during the holiday season not only benefits your community, but it also bolsters the local economy by reinvesting funds into the hands of your friends and neighbors,

ultimately supporting the local job market.” Dissinger added, “This symbiotic relationship serves as a win-win scenario for all parties involved, enhancing the well-being of both shoppers and gift recipients.” Local businesses are at the heart of Lancaster County communities. What better way to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness, and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? Before making holiday shopping lists, visit local stores and base gift
“I want (audience members) to feel the delight that we all remember and are trying to bring to it,” said Jaime Hilton, director of Cavod’s upcoming production of “The Sound of Music.” “I want them to walk away feeling like they just had a big cup of warm cocoa.” “The Sound of Music,” based on “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” by Maria von Trapp, will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1. The show will also

Our Lady of Lourdes from pg 1 creates a variety of items, from purses to potholders and dog neckerchiefs, from repurposed military wear. Fudge and baked goods will also be sold. A few items have been reserved for giveaways, including an 82-by-90-inch two-sided quilt in a range of blues made by a parishioner. When Ford decided to liquidate her inventory, she wanted to make a donation to the church. A group of women including Fran Cannon and Kathy Baker offered to work with Ford on the project.
They visited her location and were overwhelmed. “It was pretty awesome,” said Cannon of the number of pieces available. “We took more than 350 pieces,” she said, adding that most of the items are tops, sweaters, and jackets and some anorak jackets.” Cannon noted that the clothing mostly appeals to the mature woman but is available in a variety of sizes and multiple colors. The selection consists of all brand-new items, but prices will be discounted from the amount on the tag. Baker noted that a changing area will be available for women who would like to try on pieces. All funds raised by the sales will be used for capital improvements at the church. Food items that will be available for purchase at the event will include chicken corn soup sold by the bowl
and the quart, hot dogs, chips, soda, coffee, and cookies. Kernc noted that vendor space may still be available. Those interested in renting a space may call 717-371-2142. More information about the event may be found at www.ourladyoflourdesnh.com.

Consider a gift card to a local business, restaurant, or smaller food merchant so your loved ones can splurge on themselves and possibly discover a new favorite location. Additionally, subscriptions to small businesses such as health clubs and massage therapy services can be the gift that keeps on giving for recipients, providing ongoing benefits to the business, as well. Purchasing gifts and gift cards isn’t the only way to provide support to local businesses during this festive season. While you’re shopping retailers, consider dining out at local eateries, whether that means trying a new venue or patronizing an old favorite. The musical, however, is not without its challenges. “ We have a lot of kids (in the cast),” noted Jaime, who has double cast six of the seven von Trapp children. “They are fantastic,” she noted of the child actors. She also pointed out that creating a realistic set is not easy. “We want to be in the Alps and we’re not,” she stated. “Translating that onto a stage that feels true and honoring to the story without being cheesy is a challenge.” As rehearsals move forward, Jaime said that cast members are sharing their own memories of experience with the musical. “Even the kids are familiar with the story and have enjoyed digging in deeper and getting to know the characters better,” she said, noting that the story has universal themes that make it feel familiar to both
