Reaching for the goal ELANCO Library to hold fundraisers BY ANN MEAD ASH

oming out of the ELANCO Library Autumn Jubilee, fundraisers are $2,000 away from the $20,000 match the organization has been offered. Plans are to use the funds to renovate the children’s area, turning a storage closet into an education space for preschoolers, and to close the area in early 2024 so construction may begin. To continue the fundraising efforts, organizers are planning a number of events for Saturday, Dec. 2. “(It) will be a big day at the library because the Friends of the Library will have their book sale upstairs for adults and children,” said library director Anna D’Agostino. On the main level, a yard sale will be held. Both the book sale and yard sale will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the lower-level board room, a music and movement story time for preschoolers will be held at 10:30 a.m., and Pepper, a trained Labrador retriever READ dog, will visit at 2 p.m.

C

The book sale, which will feature books of all types for people of all ages, is the Friends of the Library’s biggest yearly fundraiser. The yard sale was born when a decision was made to replace toys in the new preschool area. “(Library staff members) were cleaning out the toys and games, and most of them are in really good shape,” said Susan Burke, a member of the ELANCO Library fundraising committee, who added that riding toys will be among the items to be sold. Burke noted that holiday-themed items, some of them new with tags, will also be included in the yard sale. D’Agostino pointed out that original works of art by local artists, including paintings of landscapes, will be featured in the sale. Beginning in November, the library has an ornament giving tree on display. Those wishing to donate may remove an ornament and take it to the front desk. Ornaments are designated in three nominal amounts. “It can pay a children’s book fine or contribute for children’s materials,” said Burke, who added that the

fundraiser is designed for those who want to give but may prefer not to attend a gala or other event. The library will also be giving away a children’s bicycle. The bike is a 20-inch Batch children’s bike with easy-to-steer handlebars and an

adjustable seat. A Bontrager helmet will be included. Tickets for the giveaway may be purchased at the library. The drawing will be held on Monday, Dec. 18. “At this point, our focus is the renovations and the furnishings

100 years in the making

Divine inspiration “This is the fourth year in a row we have a new scene,” said Adam Fox, program director at Woodcrest Retreat. “If you came (to Journey to Bethlehem) five years ago, the script is 80% different (now).” The 13th presentation of the Journey to Bethlehem event at Woodcrest Retreat, which takes visitors on a trek through the woods of Woodcrest to a live Nativity, will aim to make the experience real for attendees. To that end, each year, fresh creativity is poured into the project.

BY ANN MEAD ASH

This year’s Journey to Bethlehem will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 8 and 15, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 9 and 16, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate waterresistant shoes on the hourlong trek. Although the event is family-friendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape. As in the past, the event will give participants the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story See Woodcrest Retreat pg 2

Brenda Hurst (left), pastor Dawn Ranck-Hower (center), and Steve Lantz have been helping New Holland Mennonite Church to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

On Nov. 19, the congregation of New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., celebrated 100 years of existence. Church historian Brenda Hurst said that the event was the conclusion of a year of looking back into the history of the congregation and that in addition to centennial Sunday, the church held a covenant renewal. Pastor Dawn Ranck-Hower noted that the celebration finished with a fellowship meal and cake. “The first Mennonite worship service in New Holland was held at what was called the New Holland See Church pg 4

The congregation purchased land on Western Avenue and moved to a new building there in 1974. “There was a special service starting at the old church and then walking over here carrying their hymnals,” said Hurst. The Roberts Avenue church was sold to the Hispanic Mennonite Church because that congregation wanted a church in town. “In the 1950s, migrant workers began coming to this area to work at Victor Weaver’s, which is now Tyson Foods,” said Hurst. building prior to 1974. RanckHower noted that the congregations held yearly joint services from 2004 until about 2020. Throughout this anniversary year, the organization has been holding a monthly education session during adult Sunday school time to inform present members about the church’s history to give longtime members and former pastors a chance to share their memories. “We wanted to (answer the question), ‘How does our history inform who we are as a congregation now?’” noted Hurst. “For a period of time, the church supported ministries overseas, but what has been consistent is the community outreach here within New Holland,” noted congregation member Steve Lantz. The church continues to help meet local needs by hosting the New Holland Early Learning Center and providing food for CrossNet Ministries to distribute through the Sprouts for Peace Garden. Until a few years ago a sewing circle existed among the women. Hurst said that the group had provided clothing for the Welsh Mountain Mission and helped feed those in need in the area. congregation was officially born on Nov. 18, 1923, when 55 people voted unanimously to organize a congregation and call a minister. By that December, a charter membership list included 103 signatures. Originally, services were held biweekly so members could worship at their home churches as well. The first pastor, Noah Sauder, was a car salesman. He served from 1923 until 1958, when he was replaced by Frank Shirk. By 1970, the congregation had outgrown the church building, and more Sunday school space had been added. “In 1972, they voted on two plans, and they decided to

The congregation formed because young Mennonites from outlying farms who had attended Weaverland and Groffdale Mennonite churches had moved into the borough of New Holland. The new congregation rented space from the UMC church for some time before purchasing property on Roberts Avenue in 1919 and breaking ground for a building there in 1921. According to Hurst, the

Barb Dagen has been a good friend to Tabitha Shilalo by holding two benefit events to help support Shilalo’s LuoPad Pack Project ministry, which provides feminine pads for women and girls in developing countries. Shilalo is connected to Unto, a ministry based in Mount Joy, that works with “strategic global partnerships to relieve suffering through humanitarian aid in more than 75 countries,” according to the organization’s website. On Saturday, Dec. 9, Dagen will hold the third Cookies and Greens Benefit Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in her rustic barn at 80 Hellers Church Road, Leola.

This year’s sale will once again focus on delightful and delicious things. “Cookies will be sold by the dozen and the half dozen,” said Dagen, who noted that live evergreens, winterberry, and some wreaths done in faux greenery have been created for the event. Dagen has also decorated winter-themed items, such as skates in Christmas colors and décor for sale. Many of the wreaths carry reminders of the Christmases of yesteryear in their subtle colors. Dagen used items from nature, such as birch and Queen Anne’s lace, to complete the look. Other door décor sports orange slices and cinnamon sticks. Decorative baskets of fresh greens and everlasting wreaths for use year-round will also be offered for sale. Dagen has added gift baskets to this year’s collection of items to sell. “This is a date-night basket with chocolates and sparkling cider,” Dagen said, displaying one of the baskets. She also pointed out a basket with personal care items such as lavender spray and orange peppermint body scrub. “This is a kitchen basket. It has

mission trips abroad or needs they didn’t know about that come up,” she pointed out. Shilalo, who is originally from Kenya, said she is grateful for Dagen’s efforts. “It’s so helpful (that she holds this fundraiser),” Shilalo noted. “Because I was not born here, and I don’t know a lot of people, and I don’t go to a big church, (Dagen and her friends) helping me really boosts my account and helps me to keep going.” More information about the ministry may be found at https://unto.com. Last year’s sale raised more than $2,000 for Shilalo, who traveled to Asia in 2022 and to Africa last June as part of her mission.
