Adam Fox, summer camp director at Woodcrest Retreat, has been involved in the annual Journey to Bethlehem - an interactive Nativity held at the camp - for six years, but some parts of the program still amaze him. “I still get that sense of awe when the angels appear, (even though) I know it’s going to happen,� said Fox of one of the six scenes witnessed by visitors who take the journey. Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to the stable where Christ was born. This year, the ninth event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 13 and 20, from 6 to
8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ Child in the manger. The path through Woodcrest will be lit by luminarias to guide guests on their way. See Journey To Bethlehem pg 2
Church Endeavors To Serve Seniors
Trinity Celebrates Organist school at the age of 18. On Nov. 24, which was Christ the King Sunday, Trinity Lutheran Church celebrated Binder’s 40 years in that role. In 1979, Binder was chosen to play the church organ by Trinity choir director Earl Pickel, who was also a teacher at Garden Spot High School, after he became aware of her exceptional talent and maturity. At his recommendation, Binder was hired to play the organ at Trinity, and she has been leading worship at the church since then. During worship on Nov. 24, the choir honored Binder by singing the anthem “Hosanna to the Living Lord� by Robert Lau, a song that had been commissioned for Binder’s 25th anniversary of service to the church. Following the service, a luncheon was held in the church fellowship hall, and Binder was presented with a book of well wishes from the congregation.

When Dave Kling, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill, and Churchtown United Methodist Church, located along Route 23 in Churchtown, took a seminary course in change leadership recently, he found the main project for the class fit nicely with the state of his ministry. “The main project (was) to start a visioning process in the church, which I had planned on doing as part of my annual goals,� said Kling. “It all dovetailed very nicely.� Kling began working with a team of members from St. Paul’s. “I wanted the team to be made up of folks from different perspectives,� he explained. “And it was,� recalled Linda Saad, who served on the team. “There were some lively conversations.� See St. Paul’s pg 2

With that information in hand, the team looked at some specific questions regarding St. Paul’s. “We needed to … figure out why we exist,” said Kling. “That was the first question the team had to answer.” In addition to the basic answers, which included being the hands and feet of Christ and making disciples of Jesus, the team members examined gaps that they could bridge. “What niche in the community could we fill?” asked Kling. “It became obvious very quickly that it was older

adult ministry.” “We have a ministry called Seniors Serving Seniors, which started in Churchtown and came over (to St. Paul’s),” noted Kling. The group, which meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m., alternates between the two churches. Members have taken a trip to Wheatland, gone miniature golfing, toured the Moravian Church, and visited Peaceful Valley, a contemplative walk with stations located on North Shirk Road near New Holland. “That was a really big hit,” said Kling, who noted that the group has also done crafts, such as making wreaths from picture frames. St. Paul’s is also home to the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank; hosts an immunization clinic through the Welsh Mountain Medical and Dental Center, beginning at
9 a.m. on the first Tuesday of the month; and has held Christian concerts and community family movie nights. On the schedule for the holidays is a Blue Christmas service on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. in Churchtown and on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s. A GriefShare program called Surviving the Holidays will be held at St. Paul’s on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. St. Paul’s is also considering other activities including a music jam day where area musicians could gather at the church in the afternoon. “It will give the older population a chance to come in and listen and have fellowship and treats,” said Saad. Tai chi gong for seniors is also under consideration. Saad noted that a class might be held outdoors, as St. Paul’s has a scenic view of East Earl.
“Ministry goes beyond the sanctuary,” said Saad. “If we can fill gaps, we can help people enjoy fellowship and come together as a group in Christ. We decided (these activities) would be a unique way to bring folks in for the fellowship and community.” St. Paul’s is also looking forward to celebrating its 185th anniversary in 2020, with a special jubilee service planned for Sunday, May 24. “We will have historical displays, and the Terre Hill Historical Society will be here,” noted Saad, who added that Kling will discuss the history of the church and that the quartet Brothers in Grace will play. This fine art exhibit reimagines the 50 states’ voting districts and the power that comes with reordering them. The show coincides with the efforts of city and county government to make sure that everyone is counted for the 2020 census, and the show is scheduled to run through Jan. 3, 2020. It includes a self-serve station where visitors can create their own district lines with stamps. The print station will be operable throughout the period of exhibition. City Hall Gallery is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed on Dec. 25 and 26 and Jan. 1, 2020.

In a small bowl, scramble egg. Open and remove the wrapping (not the white rind) and dip into egg mixture. Coat the brie evenly with Panko breadcrumbs, pressing crumbs into brie. Roll ends in breadcrumbs as well. Set aside. Drizzle medium-sized pan with olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until oil is hot. Place brie in pan and fry for several minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown. With brie up on its end, gradually rotate brie until ends are cooked, then flip over and cook the other side. Remove from heat and set on serving board. Heat apricot preserves in a pan on low heat (or microwave for 30 seconds at a time). Stir in diced apricots. Church Leaders Travel To Ethiopia A delegation of leaders from LMC - a fellowship of Anabaptist churches, formerly known as Lancaster Mennonite Conference, took part in a trip to Ethiopia from Aug. 27 to Sept. 6. The travelers included global delegate Tom Eshleman, bishop Glenn Kauffman, bishop Rodney Martin, bishop Alvin Motley, bishop James Sutton, and moderator Keith Weaver. According to Eshleman, the purposes of the trip included establishing a relationship between Meserete Kristos Church (MKC) and LMC, which had spawned MKC, and offering an opportunity for the LMC leaders to learn from MKC leaders. During an introduction of several LMC leaders to MKC’s administrative staff at a regional office of MKC, former MKC president Tewodros Beyene said it was meaningful to him that the LMC leaders sought to learn from MKC as he has observed that Europeans and North Americans usually visit to

Now as a junior and a thirdgeneration Penn Stater majoring in agricultural science (Shirk’s father and grandfather both are Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences alumni), Shirk participates in many activities, including serving as a program assistant for two years for the School for Excellence, where she works under the supervision of Jenneth Layaou, director of campus enrollment and retention for the college, who oversees the program. Shirk helps to arrange the four-week program schedule; plans logistics, meals, and activities for participants; and assists with supervising a team of
mentors. She also helps to coordinate the Pennsylvania Youth Institute, sponsored by the World Food Prize, a partner of the School for Excellence. As a member of an elite group of undergraduate students known as Ag Advocates, Shirk serves as an ambassador for the college, striving to build positive relationships with prospective students, alumni, and industry professionals. Members also support the college’s efforts to raise awareness of educational and career opportunities in the food, agricultural, and natural resource sciences. Shirk is also involved with the Poultry Science Club, for which she serves as the secretary and organizes club events. The experiences with the club led her to hatch a new plan for her studies, adding minors in poultry and avian science and in agricultural communications. Through the club, Shirk attended the annual International Production and Processing Exposition, the largest poultry expo in the world, which is held in Atlanta. There, she was offered an internship with Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch in Michigan, one of the largest cage-free egg producers in the U.S. While at Herbruck’s this past summer, she worked through the entire process of a large-scale egg operation to understand the science behind the systems. Shirk, who plans to focus on the communications or the public relations/marketing side of the industry, wants to concentrate her career on educating people about the importance of the poultry industry and agriculture.

The first edition of the 201920 Jack Frost Jubilee Winter Fun Show Series was held at Crescendo Training Centre LLC in Ephrata. Almost 50 horses and riders competed at the show on Nov. 16 and 17. There was high turnout despite cold and windy weather. Many different disciplines were offered including: Dressage and Western Dressage with 36 rides; Ranch Horse with 58 entries; Showmanship, Western Horsemanship, and Pleasure with 21 entries; Hunter Over Fences with 80 rounds; English Equitation and Pleasure with 29 entries; and Games and Gymkhana with 26 entries. Christine Betz of Thurmont, Md., was the Saturday judge, and Penny Piersol of New Holland was the judge for Sunday. A giveaway drawing was held to benefit the Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center in Leola, and the show also included a group of vendors. The series includes one show per month from November through March. Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, is planning a Holiday Craft Show and Cookie Walk for Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is a longstanding Christmas tradition. This year’s show will include a number of local vendors selling a variety of craft items. “More than 20 vendors will have displays this year,” said organizer Patty Williams, who listed greenery, arrangements, moisturizing products, holiday crafts, home décor, jewelry, clothing accessories, doll clothes, and wall hangings among the items that would be available for purchase. The cookie walk has long been a popular part of the show. Williams noted that each participant will receive a glove and a box to fill with homemade cookies to take home. The cookie walk will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until all the cookies have been sold. A cookie decorating area and a special shopping area for children will also be offered. Vendors and church members will provide donated items for door prizes. Williams noted that Santa Clauses and snowmen will be among the prizes. Food available for purchase at the show will include chicken corn soup made by members of the Bareville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, vegetable soup, pulled pork, and hamburger barbecue. A bake sale will also be held. Last year’s craft show raised about $2,000, which was donated to local fire and ambulance companies as well as Lutheran Disaster Relief. 22nd Holiday Celebration Planned In V illage Of Inter course As autumn draws to a close, cities, small towns, and villages across America prepare for the advent of winter and the coming of Christmas. In the Village of Intercourse, shop owners and other members of the community begin to string up lights and hang greenery tied with colorful ribbons. The holidays will soon be here, and the merchants of Intercourse especially look forward to sharing the joy of Christmas with visitors from near and far. Each year when December arrives, the village marks the occasion with special events and activities. Among them is the 22nd annual Holiday Celebration for the Intercourse Merchants Association, and on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, the members of the association will invite visitors to enjoy food, entertainment,
unique prizes, and the arrival of Santa. This year’s event will begin with the traditional Children’s Treasure Hunt. Starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, children may pick up a map at the Best Western Intercourse Village Inn, 3610 E. Newport Road. The hunt, which invites participants to solve riddles and win prizes, will be held all day Friday and Saturday. The Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL), 31 Center St., Intercourse, will once again be the scene of several events that kick off the village holiday season. At 5 p.m. on Dec. 6, there will be a holiday craft time for children, followed by refreshments, available by donation. At 5:30 p.m., Santa will arrive at the library courtesy of the Intercourse Fire

The Lancaster Chamber Singers (LCS) will celebrate the Christmas season with a two-concert series. The concerts will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. The initiative is a partnership between Milagro House, Clare House, and Good Samaritan Services to restructure education programs serving mothers and children in these shelters, using a trauma-informed approach. LOHF’s Children’s Behavioral Health Grants Program aims to elevate the mental well-being of youths and children by supporting local programs that help to answer one or both of two questions: How can we build the talent pipeline in behavioral health care for youths and children in Lancaster County? Approximately 100 friends and church members attended the open house of the Lancaster Family History Center (FHC) sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lancaster. The theme of the Oct. 12 conference was “Discover Them, Discover You.” Patrons toured the newly renovated facility for researching family history. Temple and FHC consultants from Lancaster and York counties were available to help patrons use the computers to navigate FamilySearch, which highlights the divisions of FamilyTree, a repository for family history, and Search, a search engine with millions of family history resources. Visitors were invited to try a volunteer indexing project that is presently being conducted by FamilySearch to index all the authorized (authorapproved) digitized records stored in the Granite Vault in Salt Lake City, Utah. The indexing makes the resources available for patrons so that they no longer need to search through the antiquated microfilmed records still available in many centers until the indexing is completed. Typing a name into a template will bring up sources in seconds if the records have been digitized and indexed. Patrons can also use subscription sites free of charge in FHCs. These include Alexander Street Press, American Ancestors, Ancestry, ArkivDigital, FamNet, Findmypast, Fold 3, Geneanet, Kinpoint, MyHeritage, Newspapers.com, Paper Trail, and Puzzilla. The event included children’s activities and classes for adults. Sherma Woolstenhulme of the Lancaster Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ presented information about one-room school houses in the community. Duane and Rosanne Patterson of the York Ward taught pioneer games and candle dipping. Dawn Shahan of the Lancaster Ward presented the game Roots and Branches. The event also included special displays by local organizations. The Strasburg Historical Society displayed historical photos of Strasburg and presented information on events there. Sara Butler-Tongate presented information about the National Watch and Clock Museum and its library. Clayton Tongate represented the Diggin’ Up Bones Genealogy Club and invited guests to free classes offered by the Lancaster FHC. The Lancaster FHC is under

the direction of Rebecca Rinehard of the Lancaster Ward. Assisting with the open house was Tina Wagner, the director of the York FHC in York. Patrons who live closer to York are invited to use the York FHC. The Lancaster and York FHCs provide similar services. The Lancaster FHC is open to the public on Mondays through Thursdays and on the fourth Saturday of each month. Library Will Host Event On Saturday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m., Lancaster Public Library, 125 N. Duke St., will hold a “Library Happening� to celebrate the culmination of a project a year in the making. In January, Lancaster-area students in all grades were invited to submit original writing and artwork based on the theme “It Happened at the Library,� which would eventually become the title of both a book and a play. Stories, poetry, plays and drawings poured in from around the county. Project director Sandy Asher, an author and playwright based in Lancaster city, compiled the submissions into the book. Contributors include Arianna Allen, Sarah Bandy, Adali Bishop, Emma Bishop, Ali Bube, Collin Bube, Sophia Burt, Lauren Byrnes, Sydney Conlin,
Natalia Dygul, Mimi French, Brynley Graybill, Maura F. Hall, Brady Norgaard, Sydney Norgaard, Riley Rinehart, Maggie Roe, Pharoah Sisler-Dubetz, David Striggle, Joey Striggle, Gwenn Twilley, Tabitha Weeks, Stella Worley, Oskar Wright, and Sue Broaddus’s first-graders at King Elementary School. Fox Chapel Publishing donated the publication of the book, which will make its debut at the Library Happening, with many of the young authors and illustrators on hand for a group autographing session from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Original artwork from the book will be on display. The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has announced two new directors. Monica Hochstedler Carlson and Melody Stahl will direct Prelude Music and Choristers, respectively. Prelude Music is a nonauditioned class for children in kindergarten and grade one that engages children with music through moving, playing, listening, and singing. Choristers I and II are non-auditioned classes for children in grades two through five and grades six throught eight that develop vocal and choral skills in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Carlson holds a Master of Music degree in piano pedagogy and performance from Westminster Choir College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from Goshen College. Having recently relocated to Lancaster, Carlson formerly taught music in

Event Raises Funds For Off The Streets Lancaster
Choirs Plan Christmas Concert Salem Hellers’ Cantata Choir and All Saints’ Children’s Choir invite the public to attend a performance titled “Celebrate the Season” on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. at Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. The event is a contemporary celebration of the excitement, joy, and true meaning of the Christmas season, Jesus’ birth. A freewill offering will be received. The annual tally represents the highest net proceeds ever raised through the event - topping the previous record by $15,000. OTS is a volunteer-run, charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. OTS works in partnership with various other community aid organizations to identify homeless individuals and families who have a sustainable source of income to pay rent but need help overcoming the last obstacles to obtaining permanent housing: a security deposit and basic furniture. Since originating in Lancaster County in May 2013, OTS Lancaster has helped more than 2,500 men, women and children. Lena Hohenadel, grants coordinator for OTS Lancaster, noted that the funds from the Fall Blast 5K will directly help 49 families with income who are experiencing
homelessness in Lancaster County. She reported that requests for help increased 38% in 2018 over 2017, and an additional increase is expected in 2019. HARTZ Physical Therapy’s 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk was held on Oct. 5, and it proved to be one for the record books. Over the past 15 years, $189,000 has been donated to various Lancaster-based charities from the proceeds of the annual event. For the first time this year, all proceeds were earmarked to benefit Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster, an organization working with local service agencies to assist families and individuals to get “off the streets” and into permanent housing. After all financial results were tallied, the staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy was able to

The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will welcome the holiday season with its 54th annual Christmas at the Cloister musical program on Monday, Dec. 9, and Tuesday, Dec. 10. The program will be held twice each night at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Held in the original 1741 Saal, or Meetinghouse, the program will be in a lessons and carols style and will combine the Christmas story with seasonal music, including carols. The program will feature the talents of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus. This year’s guest musician will be harpsichordist Faith Martin of Ephrata. Following the program,

The NRHS chapter will have a sales table offering items for sale, including railroad themed books, prints, afghan blankets, a wood caboose, freight station cutouts and other items. The Lancaster Chapter National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) will host open houses at the Christiana freight station, 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana, on Sundays, Dec. 15 and 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will be able to enjoy a leisurely tour of the 1882 freight station decorated for the holidays. Admission is free and open to the public. There will be a variety of railroad artifacts on display, as well as numerous photograph boards displaying pictures of local Conestoga Traction trolleys of a bygone era, restoration of the 1882 freight station by the Lancaster Chapter of the NRHS, local early construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad, railroad bridges and more. An outdoor deck will allow attendees to safely enjoy watching as Amtrak trains race pass the 137-year-old freight station at nearly 90 mph. Visible eastward across the tracks is a 1907 Pennsylvania Railroad passenger station. Passenger service from this station was discontinued in 1952. Newly installed stairs will allow visitors to climb aboard an N7E caboose restored to its Conrail-era paint and logo scheme. The caboose sits along the mainline on the east side of the freight station. The caboose has an enlarged logo that was normally installed on the
