Natalie Sensenig of Denver has been taking part in sewing competitions since she can remember. Taught by both her mother and her grandmother, Sensenig has entered her creations in fairs, in 4-H competitions, and in 2020, she represented Pennsylvania in the national Make It With Wool competition in Scottsdale, Ariz.

As a seasoned competitor, Sensenig was prepared to be a contender in the 2021 PA Make It With Wool competition held in the PA See Make it With Wool pg 4

TheFruits of the Spirit, found in Galatians 5:22-23, are love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Knowing that the Bible says God’s Word will not return void, New Holland resident and children’s author Shelleen Weaver has chosen to write about the nine fruits in her series “Fruit Fables.” The third book in the series, “Sir Beaver Finds the Missing Peace,” was published earlier this fall.

In the book, Sir Beaver frets and fusses as he puts his teeth to the next tree trunk while others plan to play. When a toothache derails his work, he takes the time to rest and dine with friends, and a wise field mouse advises him to trust in his Maker rather than the work of his own paws. While the story features animals, the lesson for adults is not lost. “I have had adults tell me they cried when they read my books because it’s truth,” said Weaver.

“(The lesson) is in a sweet little packaged fun rhythmic story with beautiful pictures so it’s bite-sized, but it’s powerful because it’s right out of Scripture.”

Weaver’s first book in the series, “Love Bird,” about a bird that rudely repeats everything that is said to him, came out in 2020. In late 2021, Weaver released “Glub Glum’s Ship Flip,” about a fish she called “a bottom feeder” with “victim mentality pessimism.” “Sir Beaver” tackles workaholism with poetry that evokes pictures - “Once upon a winding creek, where brook trout swim and bullfrogs leap. Sir Beaver lived, but couldn’t sleep nor leave his work for fun.”

As with the first two Fruit Fables, Weaver turned to animation artist Cody Wood to fill the 40-page paperback with rich illustrations of her anthropomorphic characters. “(Wood) brings my stories to life in picture,” said Weaver, who praised the lighting and sense of movement Wood captured in his illustrations of the animals.

The kidney donation and transplant community is made up of people who have often connected in life-and-death circumstances. Barb Lundberg of Lebanon, who had previously received a kidney, met Dorlee Martin of Terre Hill, a kidney donor, a few years ago. Since then, both have gotten to know Pham Nghia, better known as simply Lam, a dialysis patient living in Vietnam.

Lam is 29 now. A single father raising a young daughter, he first learned he has polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in his early 20s. PKD is hereditary. Lam’s mother

died of the disease, and his daughter may have inherited it. Lam has been on dialysis for eight years. Three times each week, he takes a bus to a hospital to undergo dialysis. Each treatment costs about $20 - an astronomical amount in a country like Vietnam. Lam had hoped to receive a donated kidney from his father, but that did not work out, so he is now on the list to receive one from a deceased donor. The odds of that are not high, but in Vietnam a donated kidney by a living person must come from someone who lives in the same household, and Lam has only his daughter.

As with the first two books, a “Let’s Chew on It …” section, including seven questions, can be found at the back to spur family conversation after the book is read. “I want to make sure kids catch those little nuggets of wisdom, and this gives teachers or parents conversation starters (to make that happen),” said Weaver, who pointed out that lessons such as learning to deal with a difficult person or overcoming a negative outlook are not easy.

“These can be hard concepts for adults to get right,” she said, “but this is what we strive for.” She added that her goal is for her books to point to the heart of the Scripture.

“When I explain the Fruits of the Spirit to kids, I am saying, ‘This is God’s character that we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, and He will grow that character in us,” she said, noting that she believes fables are a good way to carry the message to all family members. “Jesus told parables because we relate to stories,” she said. “So we are able to swallow those truth tablets better when it’s bitesized and in a story.”

Weaver will be at the Gifts That Give Hope Fair at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Dec. 11, where she will be reading one of her books at 1 p.m.

Lundberg and Martin connected with Stacey Jean Inion, who has missionary and fundraising experience, and together they have been raising funds to help Lam in a variety of ways. Some funds go toward testing that is necessary to help him receive a kidney, and other money is used for dialysis treatments and food. “He’s so poor he eats (prepackaged foods), which are loaded with salt and the worst thing for him,” said Martin, who, along with Lundberg and Inion, organized a sub sandwich sale to cover several months of Lam’s expenses.

The trio would like to be able to help Lam send his daughter to school. Lam grew up in poverty, so he never went to school. Before he became ill, he worked as a truck driver. “His daughter was in kindergarten, which is $50 a month,” said Martin,

who noted the children receive three meals a day in school. “Lam had to pull her from kindergarten (because he could no longer afford it).”

To help support Lam and his daughter, Martin, Lundberg, and Inion are setting up a crowdsourcing page at www.gofundme.com/f/givelam-hope-and-a-future. The page will provide information on ways to support Lam’s dialysis, food, or education for his daughter. Those who are interested in helping may visit the link to donate or ask questions.

“(Lam) continually says, ‘I can’t believe that all of you care for me,’” reported Martin. “He said, ‘You guys have supported me better than my family has,’” she added, noting that Lam’s supporters share their Christian faith with him when they can.

“God connected us all for a reason,” noted Lundberg.

Preferred Banquet Hall of the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg on Oct. 1. Sensenig is familiar with the abilities of other sewers in her age group. “We have been competing against each other for years,” she said. So she had the competition sized up before she sewed the first seam in her plaid outfit. “I knew what I had to do to win,” said Sensenig, who took home first place in the senior division and will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, in January to take part in the competition to be held there from Thursday, Jan. 19, to Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023.

Sensenig, who graduated from Cocalico High School in 2015, watched her grandmother run her own business making drapes and later wedding dresses. Sensenig attended Lancaster Bible College, graduating with degrees in elementary education and biblical studies. “For a long time (sewing) was just a hobby,” said Sensenig, who currently teaches preschool at the Ephrata Rec Center. “A few years ago, my friends started getting married, and they asked if I could do alterations for their wedding dresses.” Sensenig likes to say she “accidentally” started a

side business doing alterations. When not working or sewing, she enjoys travel.

When Sensenig took part in her first Make It With Wool competition, she was given a piece of plaid fabric. “As soon as I saw the fabric, I pictured this outfit with a skirt,” said Sensenig, who had to devise a pattern when none existed for the skirt and top combination with a jacket. “I added the collar to the jacket, and it had buttons to close, but I changed it to a zipper.” For the dress, she combined a shirt pattern with a full circle skirt and added a lining to the top. Sensenig changed up the jacket lining as well to add interest. “I don’t like boring linings,” she said. “A solid color is just not my thing.” The red color of the jacket is called peony. Sensenig searched for an interesting pattern that combined a

cream background with flowers in that color of red to line the jacket.

In Fort Worth, the judges will examine Sensenig’s garment flat the first day. The second day, Sensenig will model the garment and be judged on her poise along with the wearability and construction of the dress and jacket. During those three minutes, the judges will ask questions. “That’s when I will explain how I combined the patterns and my favorite and most difficult parts of making it,” Sensenig said.

Sensenig believes she will compete against about 25 others at the national level. She said that if she wins first place, she might use the significant monetary prize to buy more fabric or to travel.

More information about the competition may be found at https://makeitwithwool.com.

Ages

The 31st annual Turkey Bowl was held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. The event included a 5K race and a 1-mile children’s fun run.

“We had a beautiful morning for our annual Turkey Bowl race. I think this year’s weather was even nicer than last year, which helped to encourage more runners,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director.

Participants in the event were of various ages, back-

grounds and locations. “I believe our youngest registered participant this year was about 2 years old and the oldest was 80,” noted Gregory.

“We had great showing from Honey Brook and surrounding towns, as well and many families that have made (participating in the Turkey Bowl) a tradition. We also had many from out of state from all over the country ... visiting family for the holidays. We had many new runners this year.”

He noted that about 40 volunteers helped at the event, and 26 local businesses

sponsored or donated to the race. “Many of our sponsors and donors also either participated in the race or volunteered,” Gregory noted.

Second Wind Race Timing provided the chip timing for the event. “This year, we chipped both the 5K race and the 1-mile children’s fun run,” said Gregory. “I believe the children enjoy starting under the big blue arch. Our Turkey Mascot was here again, and the kids enjoyed taking photos with him. Santa Claus was busy up North this year and could not make it.”

The top overall male winner was Noah Taylor, 19, of Mohnton, with a time of 17 minutes, 8 seconds. “This was his second year in a row to take the top spot, his third time total,” Gregory noted. The top overall female winner was Aubrey Ressler, 14, of New Holland, with a time of 20:44.

“We had 352 finishers in the 5K race (and) 77 finishers in the 1-mile kids’ fun run. They all did a great job in their race, even the really young ones, who pushed through to the finish line,” Gregory said. “It was good to see some of the parents run alongside the young ones encouraging them on.”

The top overall male finisher in the 1-mile run was Elias

McConaghay, 11, with a time of 6:41. Elias and his family, who hail from New York, have been running in the race together for several years. Hannah Yoder, 11, a resident of Indiana, was the top overall female finisher with a time of 7:20. This was her first year taking part in the event.

A complete list of Turkey Bowl finishers, including their individual times, and a listing of sponsors and donors is available at www.telhaicamp .org/events/turkey-bowl-run.

Student Presentation Highlights Saints

Help School in Ephrata remembered the saints who have gone before with a special presentation to school commu-

nity and families. Students, under the direction of teacher Jennifer Dodson, each researched the life of a saint. Students then dressed in costume and told the story of that

saint’s life to their schoolmates. Their presentations included facts about the saints and offered insight into the lives of these people who dedicated their lives to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Some of the holy men and women chosen by students this year included St. Anthony of Padua, St. Cecilia, St. George, and St. Lucy.

Fourth-graders at Our Mother of Perpetual Help School offered a presentation that highlighted various saints.

OMPH School welcomes children from local Catholic churches, as well as interested members of the general community. It is accredited through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary Schools. For more information, call 717-7382414 or visit www.omph school.com.

Outdoor Holiday Decorating Tips Offered

The holiday season is here, but home and business owners still have time to plan and execute an outdoor lighting display. According to Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster, a franchise member of the Christmas Decor network, the key to deocorating is having a plan. To create a plan that is right for local homeowners or businesses within a budget, he offered several pointers.

hints of color into the landscape to complement the focal point design.

Brenneman recommended keeping the decor simple and knowing when to stop decorating. Too many themes and colors will detract from the focal point. He noted that a clean, uncluttered display is more attractive, safer and more cost-effective.
