Family 5K Supports CrossNet Christmas Program By Ann Mead Ash
When Marcia and Ken Leahy decided to invite extended family to spend Thanksgiving with them in Bucks County more than a decade ago, the couple wanted to add a special activity along with the holiday feast. “My husband thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to do something meaningful and also fun?’” recalled Marcia. “He thought of the 5K, and I thought of doing it as a ministry to raise money (for an important cause).” The result was the Leahy Family 5K, which was held for the 13th time on Nov. 28. Several years ago, Marcia and Ken moved to the New Holland area and became involved with CrossNet Ministries. This year, the family chose to sponsor six children from three families through the CrossNet Ministries
Christmas Gift Program. “We used to collect money, but this time, we sent out the wish lists and the family
members signed up to buy the gifts,” said Marcia, who had all the items at her house by Thanksgiving Day. She
worked to categorize them as they arrived. Some family members had the items shipped to the Leahys’ home See Family 5K pg 3
Members of the Leahy family stopped for a photo (left photo) and to display the 2019 shirt (right photo) during the annual 5K the family holds on Thanksgiving Day. This year’s event benefited CrossNet Ministries’ Christmas Gift Program.
Local Author Wins National Award 10th Annual Glen Lapp By Ann Mead Ash Volleyball Tournament Scheduled Joel Moore of Narvon, author of the Civil War series “Journey Into Darkness,” is the recipient of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge award known as the George Washington Honor Medal. Moore was notified of the award in a letter from the Freedoms Foundation dated Sept. 12. “Journey Into Darkness” tells the story of a few of the more than 200,000 boys and youths who took part in the battles of the Civil War. Moore began the work in 1960 when he was still in high school. The writing progressed slowly as time and research allowed, and as the years passed, the

The tournament, which is held every January, commemorates the death and honors the life of Glen Lapp, a 1987 LMHS graduate and one of the school’s 2019 Alumni of the Year. Turkey Bowl Has A Successful Run On Thanksgiving Morning
GOLD BUYING
By Francine Fulton
Nearly 400 participants turned out for the 28th annual Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. This year’s runners and walkers had to brave blustery conditions. “Despite the wind, we had 389 participants this year,” said camp director Bruce Gregory. “Some runners commented how windy it was around the lake, but they otherwise enjoyed the race.” The Turkey Bowl, which included a 5K race, as well as a 1-mile fun run for children,

Marcia, who shared that while some family members are serious runners, she usually walks the course. “We usually give a little prize for the winner,” she said, noting that more than 30 family members ranging in age from 6 to 76 take part. Marcia, who is a member of the CrossNet board, said that she and Ken were impressed by New Holland when they moved here several years ago. “We realized the area has a real community,” she said. “We felt really led to have some involvement.” She was asked to join the ELANCO Library Board, and while she was serving, another board member took note of her passion for helping people and suggested she join the board of the ELANCO Social Services Network, which was just about to merge with Cross Connection to become CrossNet. Ken is a financial training mentor with CrossNet. Merdith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet, said that the organization is thrilled to accept the Leahys’ generosity. “We are incredibly blessed by the willingness of the community to sponsor children at Christmas. I am thankful for families, individuals, churches, and businesses, like the Leahys, who are willing to make sure children they don’t know in the community are well cared for. They are the hands and feet of Jesus at Christmas,” said Dahl. More information about CrossNet Ministries may be found at https:// elancocross.org.

outside New Holland, and others purchased them and brought them to the house. Marcia stated that parents requested outdoor wear for several of the children. “A number of (our family members) don’t have small children anymore, so they loved buying little boots and coats,” she shared. “It meant a lot to them.” To educate family members about CrossNet, the organization provided Marcia with a video she could show following Thanksgiving dinner. According to Marcia, each of the years the run has been held, a participating family has chosen the beneficiary. Through this system, the family has donated to charities from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Virginia, and New Jersey, as well as organizations that work on a broader scale. On the morning of Thanksgiving Day, family members gathered outside the Leahy home in New Holland in matching shirts to run the course that has now become familiar to them. Originally, the course was mapped and marked with signs and flags by the Leahys’ grandson Justin Blest, who was only a preteen when the event began. Blest is now preparing to finish college, and his family still runs the course he mapped, which includes Ironstone Drive, Spring Grove Road, and Iron Bridge Road in East Earl before the course reaches a turnaround point. “We have never had horrible weather, but it has been raining and we go anyway,” said

author attended college, enlisted for reserve military service, married, and began a teaching career. By 1989, Moore had completed much of the manuscript, but the first book in the series was not published until 2011. Asked how he came to receive the award, Moore leaned back and said, “That is an interesting story.” The story actually began in the 1980s, when Moore offered some photographs to Paul Sanborn, who was then a historian with the Freedoms Foundation. At the same time, he showed Sanborn the manuscript for “Journey Into Darkness.” “(Sanborn) thought it looked interesting,” said Moore, who in February of 1989 received a letter from Sanborn saying he had nominated Moore for the award. Moore kept a copy of the letter, but he never heard any more about the award. In 2017, Moore tried to contact Sanborn, wanting to show him the published work. He spoke with a representative of the Freedoms Foundation named Kevin Ferris. Ferris was unable to connect Moore with Sanborn, but he did give Moore information on how to submit an application for consideration for the award. On Dec. 17, 2018, Moore submitted his work in the public communications category of the Freedoms Foundation National Awards program. The entry included a one-page summary and several supporting documents, which could be letters of commendation, photographs, news clippings, or a supporting video. Included with Moore’s submission was a note of commendation from Lloyd Alexander, author of “The Black Cauldron.” “(Alexander) lived in the area where I was teaching when I taught at The Episcopal Academy’s Devon campus,” explained Moore, who visited Alexander
with his students. Moore also shared his work with Alexander, who in December of 1989 sent Moore a letter noting how much he enjoyed the class visits and adding, “Best yet is your gift of the ‘Journey Into Darkness’ volumes. ... Now that I see the books all together, I … am enormously impressed.” Moore also included a letter from Jim Lighthizer, president of the Civil War Trust. Moore had originally contacted the trust concerning a historic site called Stones River National Battlefield located in Murfreesboro, Tenn. “Up From Corinth,” one of the books in the “Journey Into Darkness” series, describes the extremely difficult battle that began in that area on New Year’s Eve of 1862 in the pouring rain. “I sent him the excerpt (describing the battle),” said Moore. “(Lighthizer) wrote back that one of the key components of the Civil War Trust’s mission is to educate the public about the importance of battlefields in our nation’s history. “He said, ‘Your thoroughly researched and thoughtfully written series supplements this mission very well.’” Each June, Moore takes part in the Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. A young man named Paul Wunderlich works with him portraying 12-year-old Sgt. John Lincoln Clem to tell visitors the story of one of the boys of the war. The Freedoms Foundation National Awards have recognized responsible citizens with the George Washington Honor Medal since 1949, honoring more than 50,000 citizens. Moore will receive the medal at an awards ceremony scheduled to be conducted at the Valley Forge Volunteer Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation in February 2020.

benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, who was a nurse, had first traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. He later completed a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse. He worked at Lancaster Regional Hospital and for the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New
York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for LMHS and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. From the tournament and other donations, the endowment has received almost $50,000. Funds are used to provide scholarships to immigrant and refugee children at the school. Play during the tournament is “Glenstyle, which means there are no officials. Glen-style play will be explained to the teams prior to each tournament. Registration for the tournament is now open, and those interested in taking part are encouraged to sign up soon as the spaces for teams fill up quickly. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit https://glenlappvolley ball.weebly.com/event-details.html.

Faulkner Chevrolet joined local Lancaster County police departments and first responders in November to support the 2019 Beards for Brothers campaign. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt of West Hempfield Township. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the Beards for Brothers campaign raised money for Police Sgt. Harold E. Gainer Jr., who retired after 25 years of service in East Hempfield Township. He also served two years in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with distinction fighting in the Vietnam War. In January of this year, he was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Also supported through the fundraiser was Andrew Etman, an EMT volunteer and firefighter,

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host its annual Lantern Tours on Thursday to Sunday, Dec. 26 through 29. Tours will begin every halfhour from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The setting for the role-playing Lantern Tours will be a fellowship meal held to welcome immigrants who arrived at the Ephrata Cloister in 1751. Though the event is focused on fellowship, not everyone welcomes these strangers with open arms. The Lantern Tours are presented by the Student Historians, a group of high school volunteers who bring history to life. Guests will be invited to help re-enact history by playing the part of the new immigrants. Two visitors will have the opportunity to play Hendrich Lohman and Jacob Kimmel, the leaders of the 1751 group. Each tour is limited to 30 people, and advance tickets are required. Separate admission fees have been set for adults, for seniors age 65 and older, for youths ages 6 to 17, and for children ages 3 to 5. Admission is free for children under age 3. For tickets or more information, readers may call the Historic Ephrata Cloister at 717733-6600.

MOVIE & DINNER December 19 The flood that devasted a Pennsylvania city and claimed over 2200 lives is the subject of a movie Thursday, December 19, at Shady Maple Smorgasbord. Dinner-theater tickets are still available for this locally produced movie, “Johnstown,” to be shown after a bountiful 6:00 pm dinner at the popular eatery, 129 Toddy Drive, in East Earl, PA. The movie, an effort over 15 years in the making, was produced by Holtwood resident and entrepreneur, Jerry Buescher, of Koldasee Productions. The plot, written by his late son and professional writer, James, tells the tale of three real-life persons who became heroes during the disaster – when each worked to save hundreds of lives during the flood. Much of the movie was filmed in and near Lancaster County. Scenes are included from the Pinnacle Overlook in Holtwood, a United Methodist church in Airville, and the Strasburg Railroad. Making the movie was an emotional and financial struggle, says Buescher, but after many years and revisions, he perserved. His interest in Johnstown began when he visited the actual area (simply with a historical interest, at first), and said he heard voices – asking for their story to be told.
To reserve your tickets, call 1-800-595-4849 Or visit the website at Johnstownmovie.freesite.host.

“We call this the Water Street Marriott location and youth hostel,” Mike Burkholder, chair of the board of directors of Water Street Mission, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, joked to open his comments at the Nov. 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mission’s new Providence emergency shelter. The facility was created by renovating 9,000 square feet of warehouse space into a comfortable, attractive place where individuals may receive immediate care, shelter, and the opportunity for a better life. “Several years ago, (we looked at how to) align our core values and what we believe God’s heart is for our guests and our facilities,” Burkholder continued, noting that offering dignity, hope, and healing is part of the mission’s values. “(At Providence), guests will have (access to) calmness and peace and achieve restoration and equity in their lives.” The importance of treating people with dignity and respect was emphasized numerous times throughout the ceremony, as well as during tours of the facility afterward. For Water Street Mission leaders, that starts with clients’ first impressions as they enter the shelter and move throughout the venue. The front desk has the feel of a quality hotel, and the sleeping quarters will include numerous single cots. Gray manufactured plank floors run underfoot, and cream-colored walls surround the space. Vice president of programs Colleen Adams pointed out that the sconce lighting was designed to dim as the lights-out time of 10 p.m. approaches. Smaller lights ring the floor so guests and staff members can move safely throughout the building. Locking cellphone charging stations are located in the sleeping rooms. The new shelter was created with trauma-informed design, with safety for individuals being paramount, Adams said. Each of the shower stalls in the restrooms is private and has a heavy locking door, and clear sight lines within each of the men’s and women’s areas are maintained. After they enter the building, the only time men and women might encounter each other is in the shared laundry room. Adams noted that families stay together elsewhere on campus. The facility also includes respite rooms for those who need downtime before sleeping, indoor storage for personal belongings, fewer bunk beds and more single beds to improve personal space, and a hotbox room where guests can have their belongings heat-treated to reduce the possibility of insects and germs. “We want the layout, design, and feel of the space to communicate dignity and value to each guest,” said Water Street Mission president Jack Crowley. “We want our guests to know that God cares for them and they are worthy of love and respect. We believe that an environment that communicates dignity is an important first step to building trust and beginning the process of restoration through the other programs and support offered at Water Street.” The new facility’s name reflects Water Street Mission’s belief that God provides and protects. “Thinking ahead - whether hours, days, or months - is impossible when you’re experiencing homelessness,” Crowley said. “When they come here … they can think about their future.” LanCo MyHome director Jennifer Koppel commented that she is happy to see Providence open. “The Lancaster County Homeless Coalition is only as strong as its partners,” she said. “(LanCo MyHome’s) new strategic plan focuses on human-centered equity and justice. (Providence) takes that
to … a new level. People will see that they are welcome, that they are loved.” Mission staff members will oversee the shelter’s operations, but readers who want to volunteer may spend time with guests at the winter weekend day shelter. For more information, readers may email volunteer coordinator Heather Ross at hross@wsm.org. Since 1905, Water Street Mission has

Retail & Wholesale Members of the Johnson family of Elverson who competed in the Tel Hai Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving morning were (from left) David, Cameron, Susan, (not pictured) Celia and Rosa. In the 1-mile fun run, there were 54 finishers. “All the runners accidentally went off the correct path, so the course was not a full mile this year. So the times are not based on a mile run,” Gregory pointed out. “But they all did have a great run anyway.” Jack McConaghay, 10, from Westbrooke, N.Y., came in first this year with a time of 5:28. His brother Elias McConaghay, 8, came in second place with a time of 5:46. In third place for the boys was Josh Causey, 11, from Honey Brook, with a time of 6:01. The first girl finisher was Danielle Sensenig, 10, of Gap, who was eighth overall with a time of 7:25. Meredith Stratton, 11, from Downingtown, finished in second place for the girls with a time of 8:10. In third place for the girls was Blythe Blankenbiller, 9, from Hilliard, Ohio, with a time of 8:37. Gregory credited the more than 40 volunteers who made the race a success and the 28 local businesses that sponsored or donated to the race, as well as Second Wind Race Timing. “This year we chipped both the 5K race and the 1-mile children’s fun run,” he noted. “I believe the children enjoyed starting under the big blue arch (put in place by Second Wind) this year.” A complete list of Turkey Bowl finishers, including their individual times, and a listing of sponsors and donors are available at www.telhaicamp.org/events /turkey-bowl-run. Next year’s Tel Hai Turkey Bowl will be held on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020. Other competitors in the 5K were the Johnson family of Elverson, including David and Susan Johnson and three of their children, Cameron, Celia and Rosa, who attend Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown. “There are six of us and five of us ran the 5K, so it was fun,” said Susan, noting that this was the second time the family took part in the event. “My boss’s parents moved to Tel Hai (Retirement Community) and his mom passed last year, so my boss’s family and (our family) ran it last year in memory of his mom. Ephrata’s fourth-grade students have taken a new approach to discovering the town’s history. During their visit to the Historic Ephrata Cloister on Oct. 11, students gathered materials for a cornerstone project encouraging local residents to visit the Ephrata Cloister. Back in their classrooms, students created brochures, posters, and videos inviting people to see the place where Ephrata began. Models and games were part of the museum that Akron Elementary students built in their classrooms, using the Ephrata Cloister as the subject of each exhibit.

The PPL Foundation recently awarded more than $575,000 in funding to support 13 nonprofit organizations working to improve the lives and well-being of individuals throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania. The grants announced are helping organizations fulfill their missions across the company’s 29county service territory in central and eastern Pennsylvania. The 2019 PPL Foundation Major Grant recipients include several area organizations. Joshua Group in Harrisburg received a grant of $25,000 to help expand the number of children being served by an after-school program. Lancaster Equity Inc. received a grant of $40,000 for the development of a new park and playground on Beaver Street, a direct request of neighbors in the community who are working collaboratively to improve the community. Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education Foundation in Harrisburg received a grant of $50,000 for the development of a fund that will be used to provide faculty and staff resources to develop, test and quickly implement ideas to help transform public higher education in Pennsylvania. Tabor Community Services in Lancaster received a grant of $50,000 to expand the capacity of its eviction prevention program to help stabilize neighborhoods by providing at-risk tenants with financial counseling, mediation with landlords and short-term financial assistance. Earlier this year, the PPL Foundation awarded $450,000 in sustaining grants to more than 70 community organizations. The PPL Foundation also contributed more than $2 million to support local United Way organizations. The recently awarded grants bring the foundation’s 2019 community contributions to more than $3 million. The PPL Foundation awards grants in spring and fall. The next grant cycle, for sustaining grants that assist organizations with general operating expenses, begins in January. Interested organizations can apply for grants from $1,000 to $25,000. To be considered for a grant, all organizations must apply online. To learn more, readers may visit www.pplcares.com.

On Oct. 16, the Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers (PACHC) presented its 2019 Awards for Primary Care Excellence (APEX). The APEX Awards represent the pinnacle of service, quality, innovation, and achievement in primary health care. They are designed to recognize the outstanding efforts of dedicated individuals and teams who work in or volunteer for Pennsylvania’s health centers. A number of area individuals were among the APEX honorees. The Customer Service Excellence Award was presented to Denise LaRosa, Berks Community Health Center (BCHC), Reading, in recognition of exemplary customer service to health center patients and colleagues. Dr. Federico Ceppa of La Comunidad Hispana, Kennett Square, received the Outstanding Primary Care Clinician Award in recognition of his significant contributions in the delivery of family medicine, improving quality and outcomes of care, to health center patients. The Outstanding Primary Care Clinician Award went to Helen Wooten, Berks Community Health Center (BCHC), Reading, in recognition of her 20 years of behavioral health expertise and leadership, especially the recent development and growth of BCHC’s medication assisted treatment program, a program developed in response to the opiate epidemic. Dr. Robert Little of Hamilton Health Center, Harrisburg, received the Board Excellence & Service Award in recognition of his dedication and commitment throughout the 50-year history of the health center as a founding physician. He served 35 of those years as a member of the board of directors. Eric Beamesderfer, also of Hamilton Health Center, received the Career Achievement Award in recognition of his years of work in various information technology (IT) roles at the health center resulting in his advancement to IT director. The Innovation Award was awarded to Amy Carr, Lancaster Health Center, Lancaster, in recognition of her successful management of the implementation of a technology solution and workflow processes to handle both the triage and after-hours call processes, as well as an audit process to ensure it was effective. Dr. Catherine Mauss, Family First Health, York, received the Patient Choice Award in recognition of her dedication to providing comprehensive, quality care and impacting the life, health, and well-being of the patients she serves. PACHC is a statewide membership services organization representing community health centers and other safety net providers that care for nearly 900,000 Pennsylvanians at more than 300 delivery sites in rural and urban communities across the state. Readers may visit www.pachc.org for more information.
