LMS Sells Former New Danville Campus
Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) sold its former New Danville Campus property located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, to Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning on Oct. 21. LMS unified all students from the former Locust Grove and New Danville campuses on the Lincoln Highway campus for the 2022-23 school year, starting in August.
The mission of LMS is to provide a Christ-centered, high quality education for prekindergarten through 12th-grade students in a diverse community that nurtures them to become creative and innovative learners who are prepared for college, a career, and life and are empowered to change the world through Christ-like love, peacemaking, and service.
LMS’ unification has allowed the school to update and expand its facilities and to hone in on key curriculum priorities of faith formation, fine arts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math), outdoor learning, and world languages. It has also allowed for collaborative learning opportunities across grade levels with the goal of fully utilizing and effectively stewarding the resources of its 95-acre Lincoln Highway campus.
The upgrades to the campus are intended to help the school serve the needs of students at every age and provide new spaces such as a new elementary MakerSpace and art room, new high school science labs, new media centers, and classroom upgrades, which are designed to support new curriculum initiatives to help students grow in their understanding of the world and discover their purpose in it.
The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are subsidiaries of Milton Hershey School. The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are for children from birth to age 5 and provide weekday care and education for early childhood learning. Their program covers all the costs for those who qualify.

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn Oct. 22, Lancasterbased music group The Jess Zimmerman Band won the Album of the Year award at the eighth annual Josie Music Awards in Nashville. The band’s album “Breathe” garnered the award in the country rock and Southern rock category, and the band itself was also nominated for awards in four other categories: Music Video of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Fan’s Choice Award and Rock Vocalist of the Year. The Jess Zimmerman Band comprises frontwoman Jess Heitz, guitarist Joe Barszowski, bassist John Knobler and drummer Joe Mattis, and has concerts
scheduled for the spring in Holtwood and Millersville.
The awards ceremony was hosted at the Grand Ole Opry, a nationally known American country music venue that has been in operation for almost a century. “I was blown away that we were nominated in five categories,” Heitz said. “To win Album of the Year in such an iconic place was incredible.”
Each year, the Josie Music Awards recognize specifically independent artists, meaning they aren’t signed to a record label, so they handle things like recording, producing, touring and marketing themselves. Although well-traveled in the Lancaster and greater Pennsylvania country music scene, The Jess Zimmerman Band’s success as an independent group has also taken it across the East Coast, Midwest and South.
“When it comes to ‘Breathe,’ the album itself was a monumental step for us as a band,” Heitz said. “It was also a big step for me emotionally and physically.” The Jess Zimmerman Band independently released “Breathe” in May 2021, following a flurry of recording sessions. The band members stayed in Nashville for five days, during which they recorded and mixed each of the 11 songs on the record.
“It was a lot of work from start to finish. Sometimes we would be at the studio from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. working on these
songs,” Heitz said. “Breathe” is The Jess Zimmerman Band’s first full-length album. Heitz grew up on a dairy farm in Ephrata and currently lives in Mount Joy with her husband. Her musical career
began at a young age; she would perform at local fairs, talent shows, church services and school events growing up. “Everyone has a dream when it comes to music, but if I were able to go back and tell my younger self that it would be flourishing, I don’t think she’d believe me,” said Heitz.
The Jess Zimmerman Band has multiple shows in Lancaster approaching after the new year: on Friday, Jan. 13, the group will perform at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville; on Friday, Feb. 10, it will take the
stage at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz; and on Friday, March 24, it will perform at Southern Lancaster County Farmer-Sportsmen’s Association, 573 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. “There’s an amazing music scene in central Pennsylvania, and we hope to connect with people all over, too,” Heitz said. “Our biggest goal is to reach and impact people in whatever way we can. That’s what ‘Breathe’ was for me.”

On Oct. 22, sponsors, volunteers, and mission families came together to support Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) at its 10th annual “Mane” Event Dinner and Auction presented by Garman Builders at Bent Creek Country Club. The event raised $70,000 to carry out GMTRC’s mission to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs and other diagnoses through equine-assisted activities.
Other event sponsors included Bobby Rahal Lexus of Lancaster County, Lancaster Toyota, and Thrivent.
The event’s mission ambassador was 44-year-old Nathan Buckwalter, an Ephrata native, who is celebrating 40 years of therapeutic riding with the organization. Nathan, who was born with cerebral palsy, started riding at GMTRC in 1982 at the age of 4. His parents, Ray and Nancy Buckwalter, shared that therapeutic riding enables Nathan to strengthen his core and loosen his tight muscles in a nontraditional
therapeutic setting without causing pain.
During the “Mane” Event, Nathan was able to reunite with one of his former volunteers from the early 1990s, Harold Troupe, who is the father of GMTRC’s executive director, Jennifer Troupe Rummel.
Since 1981, GMTRC has provided therapeutic equineassisted activities to children and adults with special needs and other diagnoses. The $70,000 raised at the
fundraiser will be used to ensure that low-income disabled community members will be able to continue to receive services regardless of their ability to pay. GMTRC has also created customized
programming for special interest groups of people who share a common interest but do not have a disability or diagnoses. To learn more, visit www.greystonemanortrc.org or call 717-844-3941.
Resource Family Orientations Set

Interested families will receive a recorded webinar, allowing participants time to take notes and develop questions prior to participating in a live meeting.
An in-person session will be available at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023, at the COBYS Murry Hill Center office, 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster. Virtual sessions will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, and at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Live meetings will be 90 minutes in length.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will sponsor the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through grade six who complete a designated project specific to their grade level. Students can participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschools, Scout troops, 4-H clubs, environmental clubs, or other organized groups.
The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program is a way for kids to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and to inspire others to care for their communities through art, words, or video.
In response to Pennsylvania’s new anti-littering education campaign, PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters, the theme is “Show Us How Every Litter Bit Matters to You.”
Projects include a poster for children in kindergarten through grade four and an essay or video for children in grades five and six. The deadline to participate is Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023.
Two entries will be selected as winners in each grade level. The winner and the runner-up will receive a gift card as a prize. All participants will receive certificates. Winners will be announced in April in time for Earth Day celebrations.
The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program was created with funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. For more information, downloadable promotional posters, and an online entry form, visit www.keeppabeautiful.org and select Awards under Grants & Awards. For more details, contact Michelle Dunn at mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org or 877-772-3673, ext. 113.
People of any age can make resolutions, and seniors are no exception. The golden years may be different from any other period in a person’s life, but seniors can still embrace making positive changes.
One option is to focus on safety. Aging brings about certain changes to the body and mind. Although seniors may not be able to do all the things they could do at a younger age, they can still find ways to improve upon the things they are still able to do, especially if some safety-minded tweaks are made. When resolving to improve home safety, seniors may remove tripping hazards, install grab bars, check smoke alarms, and install a security system.
Another resolution is to find new and enjoyable workouts. The exercise routines engaged in just a few years ago may no longer suit a person’s physical abilities or interests, so individuals are encouraged to investigate new fitness regimens or methods of movement. Tai
chi, yoga, water aerobics, walking clubs, and more can be incorporated into daily habits.
Seniors may also find a better system for organizing their medical records so they may stay on top of appointments and wellness measures. There are many different organizing systems to embrace, and individuals should find one that works for them.
Decluttering one’s home is another resolution option. Individuals can resolve to get rid of extraneous items that no longer serve a purpose beyond collecting dust. Having more room to move around can be safer, particularly if an individual needs a cane or another assistive device, and there will be less to
clean if some clutter is removed. If planning to downsize soon, people may clear clutter to make the move easier.
A great resolution at any age is to learn something new. A language, skill, or hobby are all within reach when individuals map out the steps to achieving their goal.
Another resolution that may be particularly relevant to seniors is to make new social connections. According to Caring Places senior communities, socially active older adults have better cognition and lower risk for depression than those who do not consistently reach out to friends. Individuals should aspire to find new companions or get back in touch with those they have not spoken to in some time.

Italian Cheesecake Recipe
After a delicious holiday meal, there is a good chance guests will be looking forward to a sweet treat. Many families have their go-to desserts on special occasions, but holiday meals can be made even more memorable, and flavorful, by taking a chance on new recipes.
A decadent cheesecake is on the menu in many Italian American families. Italian cheesecake does not typically contain cream cheese or graham cracker crust. Rather, Italian cheesecakes are full of citrus flavor and made with modified pie crust. This recipe for Torta Dolce di Ricotta is from Daniel Paterna’s “Feast of the Seven Fishes: A Brooklyn Italian’s Recipes Celebrating Food & Family.”
Torta Dolce di Ricotta (Serves 10 to 12)
Crust:
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra to dust board and pan 3/4 cup sugar
Zest of one lemon
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened, plus extra to grease the pan 2 large eggs
Filling: 8 large eggs 3 lbs. ricotta cheese, drained of excess water 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 1/2 cups sugar
Zest of two oranges Juice of one orange Juice of one lemon 1/4 cup candied pear, chopped (optional)
Directions: 1 - To make the crust, place the flour, sugar, and zest on a pastry board or clean, dry, flat surface. Mix thoroughly to
combine. Add the butter and work it into the dry ingredients. Gather the mixture into a round and create a well in the center. Drop eggs into the well, beat with a fork while gathering the dry mixture, then knead once the dough completely forms. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
2 - Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter and flour a 10-inch springform baking pan. Set aside.
3 - Meanwhile, to prepare the filling, combine the eggs, ricotta cheese, vanilla, sugar, orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, and candied pear (if using) in a large mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly and set aside.
4 - After the dough has been in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, remove it and place it on a large board or clean, dry, flat surface, lightly dusted with flour. Using a floured
School Bus Stop Safety Tips Posted
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently reinforced the importance of school transportation safety and highlighted the potential school transportation challenges posed by changing daylight conditions. The results of Operation Safe Stop, an annual school bus enforcement and education initiative that was held on Oct. 19, were also announced.
Operation Safe Stop data revealed that participating school districts and law enforcement agencies reported witnessing 155 violations of the law, down from the 252 reported last year. The initiative is held in conjunction with local and state police departments, school districts, and pupil transportation providers to conduct enforcement, raise public awareness about the consequences of improper passing of school buses, and reduce occurrences.
The School Bus Stopping Law requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet from the bus when approaching a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Motorists approaching from all directions are required to stop. The only exception to this law is when motorists encounter a school bus stopping on the opposite side of a divided highway when lanes of the highway are clearly separated by a divider, such as a concrete barrier or
grassy median.
Some safety tips for students to remember while waiting for or loading and unloading the bus include getting to the school bus stop five minutes early, so they will not have to run across the
road to catch the bus. When waiting for the bus, students should stay away from traffic.
Students should line up at least five giant steps away from the curb or the roadway to wait for the bus. Children should never run after the
rolling pin, roll the dough out into a large circle, approximately 14 inches in diameter. Now roll the dough over the rolling pin and carefully unwind it over the baking pan, gently easing it to fit evenly in the bottom and up the sides of the pan.
5 - Pour or spoon the filling mixture into the crust, leaving about 1/4 inch below the rim of the pan. Place the pan in a preheated oven and bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes, until the center is slightly firm. Cool for at least 2 hours. To save time, the cheesecake can be left unrefrigerated overnight when baked the night before.
6 - Carefully run a plastic knife or rigid spatula around the sides of the pan to remove it, so that no crust is pulled away when releasing the spring of the pan. Serve at room temperature.
school bus if it has already left the bus stop. Children should never push when getting on or off the school bus.
