When 4- and 5-year-olds attending the New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) were asked about their experiences tending and harvesting the Sprouts for Peace Garden, which is located on the New Holland Mennonite Church campus along with NHELC, their answers were colorful. Francisco, who is 5, said that he enjoyed both picking corn and picking bugs off potatoes. Meara, age 4, said she picked tomatoes, cucumbers, and corn, but she noted that she enjoyed chasing lightning bugs each Tuesday

The growing season of 2020 was the second for the garden at the church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland. The season saw the garden expand to two plots - one near the church parking lot and the other at the far end of the church’s property which effectively doubled the size of the garden. Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor at the church, explained that providing food for NHELC meals is the first priority for the harvest. The second is to provide food for NHELC families to take home with them. Next, food is sent to CrossNet Ministries Food and Nutrition Center, which is overseen by Amy Marburger. “The amount of produce coming in would easily have served more than 40 families every week,” recalled Marburger, who noted that garden project manager Ray Hurst began bringing produce to CrossNet in early May. Hurst said that lettuce and onions were first and that in early November, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli were still being harvested. In addition to CrossNet, the garden provided produce to the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank in Terre Hill and to Lighthouse Assembly of God Church for a twice-monthly food distribution. Hurst said that a group of about

About a month after the book was published, Hernandez-Tuten’s father died. To honor her father’s legacy, Hernandez-Tuten held a “Buy a Book, Donate a Book! event on Nov. 9 at The Mustard Seed Boutique in Lititz. For each one of her books that was sold that day, Hernandez-Tuten donated a book to a local women’s shelter to help fulfill her passion to help women who have been abused. Readers may find writings by Hernandez-Tuten at www. inspiredbyfamilymag.com.

Author Pens Bible Study During Shutdown women who read Proverbs 31 ‌ walk away with a list of In Proverbs 31, the writer things to do,â€? said Lancaster describes a woman of noble County resident Mari Hercharacter. To many women nandez-Tuten, author of studying the text, the charac- “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a teristics of this woman may Day Bible Study,â€? which was seem daunting. “A lot of released in early September. Hernandez-Tuten wanted to give women a different perspective on the virtues of the Proverbs 31 woman. “This woman (in Proverbs 31) is doing all these things, but I don’t think it’s just a day in her life. I think these are seasons throughout her life,â€? noted Hernandez-Tuten. “You see her being productive, and you see her trusting God in the midst of all sorts of situations.â€? One goal of the book was to Mari Hernandez-Tuten show women that they can BY ANN MEAD ASH

make significant contributions. “This whole theme of having influence as women no matter where we are is ... a theme I want to share with other women, said Hernandez-Tuten. With that focus in mind, Hernandez-Tuten pictured her reader as serious but busy. “I think of this Bible study as something for women who have been doing devotionals and want to go a little deeper but aren’t ready to sit down for one or two hours, said Hernandez-Tuten, who worked with her editor to offer readers studies that can be done in a short amount of time. The study is set up to be completed in seven weeks when the reader finishes a segment each day. HernandezTuten noted that the study offers variety. “Some days are short devotions with a question and sometimes an activity, she said. There is an “Act section that encourages the reader to “put into action what (she) just learned. The study can be done individually or in groups. With more than 20 years of experience in ministry, Hernandez-Tuten had considered writing a book later on in her life. When she was contacted by a publisher at the end of 2019, she decided to accept the opportunity as a gift from God. Her feelings about the opportunity did not change, but her circumstances soon did. “I had signed a contract and was moving forward when COVID hit, Hernandez-Tuten recalled. “I was not expecting to be writing during a pandemic with (all my family) in my house. Calling the experience “the opposite of anything I had ever imagined, Hernandez-Tuten set about writing with three school-age sons attending school virtually and her husband teaching school virtually. “The concentration part was really hard, she remembered. Eventually, she asked her husband to take the boys on a brief camping trip so she could have the solitude she needed to meet her deadlines, and she completed the book in about four months.

15 to 20 volunteers made up of church members, employees from the adjacent Goodville Mutual office, families of NHELC students, and others came to help on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Other workers included students from Revelations of Freedom Ministries and young men sent to do community service by Judge Jonathan Heisse.
