Dec.6 was not a typical day for Garden Spot Middle School (GSMS) students. The morning opened with an assembly in the school auditorium conducted by personnel from Junior Achievement of South Central PA. Following the assembly, students were divided into groups, each of which took part in several activities based on grade level. The half-day program is called YES!, and the name stands for Your Economic Success.

At GSMS, the program featured four sessions for seventh-grade students and four for eighth-graders. Sessions were conducted by volunteer business leaders from the greater ELANCO community.

According to Nancy Schwabe-Fry, seventh-grade school counselor, “YES! Day is designed to provide that practical learning which is essential for the career ready development of our students.” All the sessions either encourage students to start thinking about a career path or help them to learn what is

necessary to move along that chosen path and succeed in life. “(The program) gives our students the opportunity to connect with community members who share their own career paths, in addition to guiding the students through activities that help prepare them for the working world,” said Schwabe-Fry.

Seventh-grade students attended Am I Qualified? The session, overseen by ELANCO School District superintendent Michael Snopkowski, delved into the requirements neededfor different roles such as

postal employee or real estate agent. Retired para-educator Susie Beck volunteered to help in the Manufacturing session, which explored the production and distribution of roasted coffee beans.

“It’s (based on) a Starbucks plant in York, and they are playing a game about how (coffee) is processed,” said Beck. A Career Paths session was held, and a Soft Skills session, overseen by Stephanie Good of Stoltzfus Meats, helped students learn to decipher technical skills versus soft skills.

When Frank Gaston completed the Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) program at the end of December 2020, he knew he needed to avoid going back to the life he had when he was addicted. “I started praying,” recalled Gaston, who was seeking God’s counsel on what to do next. The answer had four wheels. “I have always worked on cars. They are my hobby,” Gaston said.

Before completing the RTCM program, Gaston had worked in warehousing, but he also hustled cars. “I would buy a car from people if I knew they needed money,”

said Gaston, who soon realized what God was calling him to do. “(God) told me to (buy and sell cars) for good (purposes),” Gaston revealed.

The result is Slow Down Ministriesan organization that currently provides cars for graduates of Christ-centered programs like RTCM, Revelations of Freedom Ministries, The Potter’s House, and The Potter’s House of Ruth. Gaston, whose title is founder/director, explained that often individuals in recovery have a special need for low-cost transportation. “A lot of times, people in addiction have lost everything, so when they complete a program, they are starting fresh,” he noted. “(A graduate) may get a job, say, on a farm in Morgantown, but then there’s no way to get them there, and they feel defeated and they may relapse,” Gaston explained. Slow Down Ministries can fill the transportation gap by providing a car at a reasonable price.

To fulfill that mission, Gaston currently works with Andrew Lockman of Clearview Complete Auto Care in New Holland, who donates time and garage space to evaluate donated vehicles or ones Gaston has purchased. Cars that cannot be repaired are sold for scrap.

Gaston’s dream is to expand the ministry to provide cars for more community members in need. “Down the road, we would like to provide cars for others who can’t afford them,” he said. “That is something we are working on.”

What Gaston needs to make that dream happen is more community support. “I need (volunteer) time, money, parts, labor, whatever the community can give,” said Gaston. Slow Down Ministries is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a four-member board. Contributors will receive a tax receipt for donations of funds or vehicles.

Gaston knows that growing the ministry will depend on God. Recently, he connected with Christian MissionaryTechnical Services of Reading, an organization which has provided vehicles to missionaries on furlough. The ministry has an abundance of cars to sell, and Gaston sees the opportunity to salvage some of those vehicles for his ministry.

“I want to do more,” said Gaston, who noted that the name Slow Down is the opposite of “hustle.” “(The name) reminds me to stay focused,” he said.

Eighth-grade activities included a STEM Skills session, Résumé Building, Interviewing Tips, and Keeping Your Balance, which examined personal finance choices. Concrete interviewing tips included instructions on having a firm handshake while making direct eye contact. Personal finance exercises gave students choices about ways to spend their income focusing on food, transportation, entertainment, clothing, and housing. Housing options included staying with parents or renting an apartment closer to work.

“We are delighted to partner with Junior Achievement in order to provide this learning experience for our seventhand eighth- graders,” said Schwabe-Fry. “Part of our responsibility as educators is to help students explore the importance of career and personal finance that will impact their lives as young adults.”

ELANCO School District superintendent Michael Snopkowski facilitated a session for seventh-grade students.

“New Year, Fresh Start: Parenting Like a Minimalist” will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. Local entrepreneur and educator Mara Pritchard, founder of The Beautiful Sort, will share strategies for managing the toys, children’s clothes, and spaces in one’s life. She will also cover approaches to organizing spaces to encourage long, imaginative play, decluttering and donating unused toys while including kids in the process, encouraging (but not forcing) letting go, maintaining good boundaries, and setting an example. The program is designed for parents, caregivers, those who work with children, and anyone who has made a New Year’s resolution related to making their living or working space more functional, welcoming, and peaceful.

The Lego Creation Club will gather on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. Using Lego bricks, participants will build themed creations that will be displayed in the library.

An Act Of Kindness

When Tom Phillip brought his wife, Geri, to the Snack Shack at Shady Maple Farm Market, it was not just about enjoying homemade food for lunch. Rather, the activity provided a form of socialization for Geri, who has Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

Tom and Geri, who are lifelong residents of Honey Brook and have been married for more than 54 years, visited Shady Maple every day until recently, when Geri was placed in hospice care at their home. The Snack Shack employees noticed their absence, which prompted them to surprise Tom and his wife with meals and goodies, which were delivered to their home.

“I brought my wife to Shady Maple every day as a form of therapy. Having the stimulation and the daily relationships with Shady Maple staff gave Geri solace,” explained Tom. “After not seeing Geri at the store and hearing of Geri’s hospice situation, Shady Maple (employees) presented a token of their kindness and love for me and my wife. The staff brought a box of meals and goodies with this beautiful card.”

During their daily meals, which took place for at least a year, Geri and Tom got to know the employees at the Snack Shack. “Most of them are young women. One is a senior in high school; others are freshmen or sophomores in college,” said Tom. “They work there when they can to earn some money to support their educational costs. They are out there trying to improve their

lives and pursuing careers. I always took an interest in how they were doing and tried to (share) some experiences that I had when I was young person.”

Tom said he was not surprised that the employees pulled together to provide him and his wife with gifts, which included five pre-made meals, a basket of fruit, a container of mixed nuts and a box of chocolate-covered pretzels.

“They knew about my wife’s situation and had a perception that these are things that don’t get better over time. We were kind of like family,” Tom shared. “These people are special, especially in that they are young people. They are thoughtful and they are respectful, and we always had a good time. There (was) always banter going back and forth.”

He said that people in the

community should be aware of the Snack Shack employees’ kind gesture. “This is an act of kindness - good people doing good things,” said Tom. “The focal point for me is that the women who work at the Snack Shack (used) their own money (to) fund the cost of the big box of stuff. People in the vicinity should know they live in a special place.”

Tom is currently providing care for Geri, who attended St. Peter Parish in Honey Brook and was a volunteer at St. Mary of Providence Center in Elverson. She previously worked at Kayeness Inc., a plastic molding company in Honey Brook, and at Tel Hai Retirement Community.

MJWK (Miss Jess Wants to Know) will take place throughout the month. Teens may stop by the young adult book and teen graphic novel section of the library for the question of the month. This month’s topic is “Social Media Showdown.”

The Story Challenge will be available all month. Participants should read the story on the window next to the wheelchair ramp and tell a staff member at the circulation desk the answer to the question. Prizes will be awarded.

A Transportation I SPY Window Game will be featured on the library’s window. Each week, patrons may look for a different set of items. Those who find all the items will receive a sticker.
