Middletown Church To Host Sweetheart Banquet

MiddletownFirst Church of God will present its annual Sweetheart Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature a home-cooked meal and fun activities, including the church’s version of “The Newlywed Game.”

Although the event has a Valentine’s Day theme, it is open to both singles and couples. “There are parents who bring their kids and the whole family comes,” said church member Patty Kuharic, one of the event organizers.

This year’s menu will include appetizers, salad, lasagna with meat sauce and garlic bread sticks followed by dessert. “It’s all homemade,” said Kuharic. “One of the ladies from the church cooks the meal.”

Butter Sculpture Celebrates Agriculture

Prior to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which was held from Jan. 7 to 14, state Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding unveiled the 2023 Pennsylvania Farm Show butter sculpture. Carved from 1,000 pounds of butter, it highlights this year’s theme, “Rooted in Progress.”

The sculpture, a longtime Farm Show staple that celebrates Pennsylvania’s 5,200 dairy farmers, highlights the strong roots Pennsylvania

agriculture has today thanks to a vision rooted in progress and eight years of targeted support and investments for the industry.

In addition to Redding, speakers at the unveiling included Diana Dibble, vice president of integrated marketing communications for American Dairy Association North East; Steve Harnish from Central Manor Dairy; and sculptors Jim Victor and Marie Pelton.

Sweetheart Banquet

The sit-down dinner will be served in the church’s fellowship hall, which will be decorated for the occasion. “People come and help on Friday night to decorate. By the time we put up the balloons and tablecloths, it comes together nicely,” Kuharic said.

A photo booth will be available for selfies, and child care will be provided for children age 10 and under.

“The Newlywed Game,” hosted by pastor Kim Shifler, is always one of the highlights of the evening. “We pick four couples and they get up on the stage. Our pastor asks questions of the men and the wives come back to answer and we reverse it,” Kuharic explained.

Shifler plans other activities as well. “We all watch ‘The Newlywed Game,’ but the pastor also finds some games and activities for everyone to participate in,” noted Kuharic. Past activities have included tossing balls through hoops and making sentences from candy conversation hearts.

Kuharic noted that while the banquet is being held at the church, the event is open to the whole community, not just those who attend the church.

Middletown First Church of God is located at 245 W. High

St., Middletown. Sunday worship is held at 8 and 10:30 a.m. The church also offers a Wednesday Night Live program, which includes dinner at 5:45 p.m., followed by classes and small group discussions at 6:30 p.m. The program, which has been held at the church for more than 20 years, is open to people of all ages. “There is adult and children’s programming, and baby-sitting is available,” Kuharic pointed out. “A lot of people come straight from work. It’s very casual.”

Tickets to the Sweetheart Banquet must be purchased in advance. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Miniature Horse Unicorn Workshop Set

Children ages 7 to 11 and their parents or guardians are invited to participate in a miniature horse unicorn workshop at the Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATRA), located on Station Road in Grantville. It will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.

Children may join miniature horse Rummi on her “unicorn” quest to discover the power of friendship. They will experience hands-on learning in horse handling, goal setting, problem solving, and volunteer service. This session does not involve horseback riding.

Hoehn Named Heart Ball Chair

The American Heart Association has named PNC Bank’s Jim Hoehn as chair of the 2023 Capital Region Heart Ball, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Hershey Lodge, 325 University Drive, Hershey. As event chair, Hoehn is focusing on driving equitable health for every member of the community and raising critical funds to support the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association, a nonprofit organization f ocused on heart and brain health for all.

Hoehn has led PNC’s central Pennsylvania market as regional president for more than a decade. He joined PNC through its acquisition of National City Corporation in 2008 and previously served as regional president of PNC’s Dayton, Ohio, market. A longstanding active member of the community,

Hoehn serves on the boards of directors for the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, Better York, the Economic Development Corporation of Lancaster County, WITF and Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. He is also a member of the governor’s Pennsylvania Early Learning Investment Commission.

Dietitians To Offer Virtual Classes

The Giant Company’s team of dietitians will offer free, live classes via Zoom for families and chefs of all ages in January and February.

Produce Spotlight will be featured every Monday at noon. On Jan. 30, the featured recipe will be peanut butter and banana French toast. The January programs have focused on seasonal

produce and the ways it strengthens people’s immune systems. In February, the dietitians will explore red, yellow, green and blue color groups and the many benefits of eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.

Wellbeing Workshops will also be offered. On Jan. 30 at 7 p.m., attendees will take a virtual tour of Giant’s

produce department and learn about the available products. Celebrate Heart Health Month in February with classes like Mediterranean Diet.

In honor of National Soup Month, the dietitians will conclude the Build a Balanced Soup series on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at noon. In February, the Build a Balanced programs will continue, highlighting ideas for building a balanced spaghetti night, salad, dessert and oatmeal bowl.

Family Meals at 5 will be offered every Tuesday at 5 p.m. Dietitians will help home cooks build easy, quick and balanced meals in under 30 minutes.

Concluding January’s “Take 5” themed programs, the Jan. 31 class will feature a recipe requiring five or fewer ingredients. In February, recipes will include a Valentine’s Day top sirloin steak with asparagus and tomato orzo.

Harrisburg Area Homeschoolers Association will offer a Homeschooling Thru High School Workshop on Thursday, Feb. 9, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 1201 Slate Hill Road, Camp Hill.

The event is for parents of middle-schoolers who want to learn more about homeschooling high-schoolers.
