SSBVM honors distinguished graduate Church to host African Children’s Choir
Joe Trojcak was recently named the 2023 Distinguished Graduate at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SSBVM) Catholic School in Middletown.
Trojcak, a member of the SSBVM Class of 1976, is involved with the Knights of Columbus and assists with the SSBVM Lenten Fish Fry and at parish festivals, funerals, weddings and other sacramental events. He prepares SSBVM church music, assists with the choir and is the church organist.
“From making the mac and cheese for our Lenten Fish Fry to playing the organ at our church, Joe is a man of many talents and always jumping in to help. We are blessed to honor him with this award,” said Mindy Kennedy, SSBVM director of development.
Trojcak was honored at the school’s Green & Gold Night Out fundraiser held on March 18 at the Vineyard at Hershey. He was presented the award by SSBVM principal Angela Warner, who stated, “Joe’s caring and giving heart goes far beyond the church and extends to local organizations and businesses to support their needs. We are blessed by his service to the community, our church and the school.”
In accepting the award, Trojcak expressed the importance of receiving a Catholic education. “Our faculty here - and I feel part of it as the musical leader in our parish - we strive to bring these kids spiritual nourishment to help them in their
lives,” he stated. “As a teacher at Lebanon Valley College, I get the students when they are 19 and 20 years old, and those who have a spiritual background have something to build on and have a step ahead of understanding what their life is really about.”
Trojcak attended Lebanon Valley College, where he studied audio recording and producing. He is a graduate of West Chester University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in management. He also attended HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, to study business and music. He launched his own audio engineering business and is an adjunct professor at HACC and Lebanon Valley College.
At SSBVM, he is one of the “Three Amigos” who make the macaroni and cheese during the Lenten Fish Fry. “We make eight vats of mac and cheese and serve about 700 to 800 people (each week),” he said, noting the meals are served in a drive-through format.
Trojcak learned he had received the honor during Sunday Mass, which kicked off Catholic Schools Week in January. He shared that he was surprised by the news. “Every year, they honor a graduate, and there is plaque in the hallway (that lists the honorees),” he said. “I had no idea I had been nominated.”
Trojcak was presented a certificate, signed by Warner and SSBVM pastor Timothy Sahd, which recognized him for “generously assisting the Lord in spreading His kingdom by embracing our God and our community.”

Consumers warned of scams
Consumers can never let their guard down when it comes to identity theft, as personal information is much more accessible in an increasingly digital world.
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), identity theft is when someone uses an individual’s personal or financial information without his or her consent. Commonly stolen data includes addresses, credit card numbers, bank account information, Social Security numbers, and medical insurance numbers. Although thieves can gather information by intercepting it through digital channels or simply by stealing mail or going through trash, many times people inadvertently share personal information with scammers themselves.
Common scams include phone scams, text links, phishing emails, Medicare card verification scams, and data breaches.
Phone scams may involve telemarketers trying to sell something in exchange for personal information given
over the phone, as well as people impersonating government agencies or credit card companies. “Please confirm account information” or “We’ll need your financial information to process” are some of the phrases these scams use. Personal information should never be given over the phone unless a person has confirmed that the individual he or she is speaking to is legitimate.
Scammers utilize text messages to try to gain information. The text includes a link to a site that will request personal information. Individuals should not respond to such texts, and they should avoid clicking on the links.
Phishing emails look like they come from legitimate sources, but they often contain malware that can infiltrate computers and other devices to steal identity data. Phishing increased during the COVID-19 lockdowns, as more people were working from home, according to the Identity Theft Research Center (ITRC).

essay on the contest’s theme, “My Pledge to Our Veterans,” won third place in the local contest. Past commander Glen Hoffer and Auxiliary member Pat Grubb presented Kadie with a $100 check during a school lunch in front of her peers.
What better way to celebrate the warmer temperatures and brighter days than with light and tasty foods like salad?
For a twist on the traditional lettuce-based salad, opt for greens that have a little bite. “Arugula and Artichokes” pairs two nutritious and delicious offerings in one salad. The recipe is courtesy of “The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook.”
Arugula and Artichokes (Serves 6)
Ingredients:
4 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic, minced
6 cups baby arugula leaves
6 oil-packed artichoke hearts, sliced
6 low-salt olives, pitted and chopped
1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half
4 fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced
Directions:
1 - Make the dressing by whisking together the olive oil, vinegar, Dijon mustard, and garlic until there is a smooth emulsion. Set aside. Toss the arugula, artichokes, olives, and tomatoes together.
2 - Drizzle the salad with the dressing, garnish with the fresh basil, and serve.
Area bike share program in motion
Following a brief hiatus over the winter, the SusqueCycle bike share program is operating again with six locations around downtown and midtown Harrisburg. With plans to expand by this summer, SusqueCycle will soon have twice as many bikes and six more locations - the Federal Courthouse/Bethesda Mission, the Midtown State Office Complex, the TransitPark lot off Market Street, Tri-County Community Action at 1514 Derry St., Paxtang Borough at the Greenbelt, and the square in Hummelstown Borough.
Launched with a test run over several weeks in fall 2022, SusqueCycle had 36 bikes and six bike racks at the same locations that are available now: Market Square, Strawberry Square, the Amtrak station, Broad Street Market, City Island, and State Street. Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC) operates the bike share program.
Powered by Tandem Mobility, SusqueCycle uses the Movatic app. Pay-as-you-go pricing is available for a set fee per 30 minutes, and there is an annual membership option for unlimited 30-minute trips. SusqueCycle memberships can also be used with the Hershey Bikes and Bike It Lancaster programs and will be available in York when that program is launched.
In addition to TCRPC, the program’s prime sponsors are the Harrisburg Area Transportation Study and the UMPC Pinnacle Foundation. Additional sponsors are being sought for 2023. For more information on SusqueCycle, visit www.susquecycle.org.

Residents warned of scam
Dauphin County
District Attorney Fran Chardo and Dauphin County Sheriff Nicholas Chimienti Jr. are warning residents about the renewed use of an old scam.
The perpetrators call residents claiming they are the subject of a warrant issued by Judge Scott A. Evans or another judge and that they must report to the Sheriff’s Office to pay a fine. Caller ID shows that the call appears to originate from the actual telephone number of the Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office. However, the call does not originate from the Sheriff’s Office.
The scammers may instruct the victim to purchase Green Dot MoneyPak cards or solicit another form of payment to pay the fine and avoid going to jail. The Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office reminded residents that it never solicits or accepts money by telephone.
Residents who receive one of these scam calls and answer the phone are advised to inform the caller that they will call them back, and then hang up. Residents who do not answer the phone and instead receive a voicemail with a similar message purporting to be from the Sheriff’s Office are advised not to return the call. Anyone receiving one of these messages should call the Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office at 717-7806590 to report the incident.

Camps planned for children and adults with special needs
The Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp has opened registration for the upcoming camp season.
Situated on 583 acres along the Juniata River in Mount Union, Beacon Lodge Camp was organized in 1948 to meet the needs of Pennsylvania residents with vision impairments. Beacon Lodge has grown into an inclusive summer camp for both children and adults with blindness or vision impairments, as well as individuals with other special needs, including intellectual disabilities, autism, mobility issues, deafness and hearing impairments, and ADHD.
The camp is funded primarily by donations, and it has been sponsored by the Pennsylvania Lions for 75 years as a state project. During the camping season, Beacon Lodge operates as a full-service summer camp for children and adults with a variety of special needs.
The camp’s mission is to provide all individuals with special needs the opportunity to enjoy a camping experience. Special emphasis is placed on stimulating interests and appreciation for recreation and learning, as well as encouraging campers to take on new challenges.
Beacon Lodge offers several different camping sessions based on camper abilities. Activities focus on campers’ strengths, not their weaknesses. Activities range from bingo
and arts and crafts to the climbing tower and zip line.
The camp also offers special sessions and programming for military veterans who have become disabled. Camp Project New Hope offers camping experiences for veterans and their families.
For information on the 2023 camping season, visit www.beaconlodge.org.
Many campers can receive assistance with funding from their local Lions Club. For information on local Lions Clubs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, contact District 14-D Beacon Lodge board members Lori Eshleman at 717-350-5536 or Bill Grager at 717-615-1974.
Assistance may also be available through state and county programs for adults and children with disabilities, as well as other local civic and community groups.

Older individuals have long been targets of criminals. Seniors are now being called, emailed, or even visited in person by scammers claiming to represent Medicare. Perpetrators of this scam offer new services or new, chipped Medicare cards in exchange for verification of Medicare identification numbers. Medicare numbers should be carefully guarded, and seniors should keep in mind it is highly unlikely Medicare representatives will contact them in these ways. Individuals do not have to be concerned with just a home computer or phone breach. Security experts indicate many major companies are being breached. By the time the companies discover that data was stolen, personal information, which usually includes credit card numbers, email addresses, and home addresses, may have been circulating for some time. While it is impossible for private citizens to prevent this type of data breach, a credit monitoring service can alert consumers if their information shows up where it does not belong.
