FIA to host Community Fun Day

Following the success of its first Community Fun Day, Friends in Action International (FIA) will hold its second annual Community Fun Day on Saturday, May 20, at its headquarters at 3950 E. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown. The free event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. rain or shine, will feature activities for people of all ages.

The event will provide the community with an opportunity to learn about FIA’s mission work around the world through interactive activities.

Adults can test their skills in the excavator obstacle course competition, operating the boom and bucket to pick up and move objects, just like FIA uses it to move trees, brush and soil in Papua New Guinea or Vanuatu. Adults and children can use a hand well pump like the ones used in Africa to experience fetching water.

Children can jump and enjoy the bounce house, which is reminiscent of the Amanda Brandt Memorial Playground that is part of the community transformation work in Rama

Dauphin County, TCRPC receive award

A joint wastewater management initiative of Dauphin County and the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission (TCRPC) was recently recognized as an Innovative Community and Governmental Initiative as part of the 2023 Governor’s Awards for Local Government Excellence. The award was presented to the Dauphin County commissioners and the TriCounty Regional Planning Commission during an awards ceremony held April 12 at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.

The winning program was a joint effort by the county and TCRPC to address the growing range of

stormwater management, water quality and flooding issues in the county. In recent years, the cost to address these issues has risen due to the increasing complexity of the impacts and environmental regulations associated with stormwater management.

The Regional Water Resource Enhancement Program was designed to cut municipal costs by 60% to 90% percent by providing a central framework, offering strategic partnerships and coordinating efforts between municipalities. To date, 15 municipalities are participating in the program.

Cay in Nicaragua. They can also enjoy barrel train rides, scramble for candy when it is shot out of the Candy Cannon each hour and take a picture sitting on the skid loader. Younger children can use Tonka trucks to level airstrips at the corn table, which is a “sandbox” full of corn, used instead of sand, with toy construction vehicles. At the craft table, children can paint toys for children in Vanuatu who are without them.

The Kids Cookie Break Party will be on hand from 9 a.m. to noon. Visitors may stop by the tent to request a song, see the cookie car and get some free goodies and Chick-fil-A cookies while supplies last.

New this year will be a pulled pork Smokin’ Hot Cook-Off Competition. Spots are still available to enter the competition. FIA will provide three, 10-pound pork butts and rolls. Preparation can be done at home, but cooking must be done on-site. Pulled pork sandwiches will be available for attendees for a small donation.

Ideal for readers ages 8 to 12,

the story involves a magicfilled contest in which two fairies, one creative and the other a stubborn traditionalist, compete to find a human companion for the loneliest creature on earth, Sasquatch.

Recreation director Anthea Stebbins; DCNR Recreation and Conservation manager Lori Yeich; Pennsylvania state Rep. Patty Kim; DCNR secretary Cindy Adams Dunn; Kristen Olewine Milke, a major donor and project sponsor; Friends of Wildwood board president Jim Caufield; Friends of Wildwood board member Lee Johnson; Wildwood Park manager Chris Rebert; and Dauphin County Commissioner Chad Saylor.

DCNR provided funding for numerous improvements, including an accessible outdoor comfort station, hydration stations for people and pets, trail repairs, interpretive signage, a spotting scope, bridge renovation, trail safety enhancements and the completion of Wildwood Way Trail.

“The boardwalk project illustrates the difference we can make when we come together to fix a problem,” said Pries. “Wildwood Park has long been a popular destination for recreationalists

and nature lovers, but the years and flooding took their toll, especially on the boardwalk. Thanks to the leadership of Friends of Wildwood and our county Parks and Recreation Department and the partnership we have with DCNR, we now have an expanded, stronger and more resilient boardwalk for our community to enjoy for years to come.”

Friends of Wildwood launched a capital campaign in spring 2020 with the goal of raising funds to reopen the boardwalk after it was closed due to severe flood damage. The successful campaign enabled the county to renovate the boardwalk, with repairs completed in early April.

As part of the project, a 100-foot section of the Delta Boardwalk was completely rebuilt to better withstand floodwaters. In addition, a new 75-foot section spanning Paxton Creek was added to the North Boardwalk. To minimize environmental impacts

of construction, the project incorporated streambank stabilization and wetland matting for equipment.

“Wildwood Park is truly a community asset, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect it so that future generations can enjoy the bounty of nature’s beauty,” said Saylor. “Wildwood Park is a natural habitat for countless species of plants, birds, fish and other wildlife. It is a critical woodland and wetland ecosystem, and we’re fortunate to have it right here in Dauphin County.”

Program to focus on Civil War draft resistance

The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, May 19, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Summerdale. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and a buffet dinner of lemon chicken, Mediterranean cod, smashed potatoes, sugar peas and carrots, fruit and nut salads, and brownies will be served at 6:45 p.m. Anyone who wishes to attend the lecture only should arrive by 7:30 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Robert M. Sandow will discuss “Copperheads and Draft Resistance in Pennsylvania During the Civil War.” Political opponents of Lincoln, dubbed “Copperheads” by detractors, have often been viewed as villains in the narrative of the Northern war effort. Using examples from Pennsylvania, Sandow will address the questions “What was the reality behind the accusations?” and “How did partisanship fuel divisive attitudes toward the war and its policies about censoring speech and complying with the military draft?” and

“What is the place of political opposition in wartime?”

Sandow teaches American history at the Lock Haven University campus of Commonwealth University. He is the author of “Deserter Country: Civil War Opposition in the Pennsylvania Appalachians,” along with other books and articles.

The lecture is free. There is a fee for the dinner, payable at the door; however, anyone wishing to attend the dinner should make reservations by Sunday, May 14, by contacting Brian Foster at hcwrt.membership@gmail.com

or 717-962-6122.

For more information, visit https://harrisburgcwrt.org or contact Stephen Smith, program chair, at 717-433-0209.

The commissioners noted that the project was community-led. “This was a grassroots labor of love for those who treasure Wildwood Park,” said Commissioner George Hartwick. “This project would not have been possible without the generous support of the many donors who helped fund it, including Friends of Wildwood, the Olewine family, the McCormick Family Foundation and the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. We’re so grateful to them for helping to protect and enhance this natural treasure.”

Swartz to speak about family cemetery

The Lower Swatara Township Historic Preservation Society will host the program “Swartz Family and Cemetery” on Thursday, May 18, at 6 p.m. The program will be held at the Lower Swatara Fire Department Community Hall, 1350 Fulling Mill Road, Middletown.

Ann Swartz will share how the remains of a cemetery on the Swartz family’s homestead helped to reveal the early Swiss Brethren community in Lower Swatara Township.

Ann, daughter of Jim and Nancy, has been a lifelong resident of Lower Swatara Township and Middletown. Although she lived away during college and had an activeduty career in the Army Nurse

Corps, she retired from the military and returned to the local area to finish raising her children. Now, retired again from Penn State, she still enjoys the walk across fields to what remains of her family’s cemetery.

For more information, call 717-944-9891 and leave a message or visit www.lst historicpreservation.org. The presentation is free and open to the public.

The Mission Partner tent will provide inspirational stories of God at work through other service and mission organizations like I-Tec, Ethnos360 and Crossworld. Children can learn facts and hear about outreach impacts through a display presenting pictures from FIA’s five countries of service.

FIA is a local nonprofit that supports mission work in areas

of limited infrastructure worldwide by using construction projects and other practical services to spread the message of the Gospel to people who have never heard it before.

Volunteers are being recruited for trips through the end of the year in the U.S. and Mexico and next year’s trips to West Africa, Vanuatu, Peru, Nicaragua and Mexico. All

types of skilled and unskilled laborers are welcome.

FIA invites the community to join its efforts through prayer, financial support, donation of construction materials or participation in a short-term work trip. For more information or to register for the cookoff, contact FIA at 717-5460208, email fia-usa@fiaintl.org or visit www.fiaintl.org.

Maintenance help sought at camp

The Derry Township Camping Association is seeking help with spring maintenance at Camp Catherine, 1275 Swatara Road, Hershey.

For over 60 years, Camp Catherine has provided camping facilities to local youth organizations as well as regional groups visiting the Hershey area. Each spring, the Derry Township

Camping Association, which is the caretaker of the camp, performs maintenance to prepare the facilities for the summer season. Over the years, the board members have taken on the bulk of that work, but this year, the association is seeking assistance from individuals and groups that can help during May. Tasks will include

mulching, staining, landscaping, repairing siding, and cleaning lights in the lodge. To sign up, visit www.camp catherinehershey.org and click on the link at the top of the homepage. The Derry Township Camping Association also welcomes donations to help cover the utility costs of the camp; look for the donation button at the top of the homepage.

Historical society opens new exhibit

The Hummelstown Area Historical Society has announced the opening of a new exhibit about the impact of transportation systems on the development of commerce in the Hummelstown area and their role in defining the area’s sense of community.

Six different transportation systems have existed during the course of the community’s 260-year history. They were Native American paths, Colonial-era turnpikes, canals, railroads, trolleys, and dirt and paved roads. The exhibit explores the role of each one in the town’s development.

Members of the public may

view the display at the society’s History House at 32 W. Main St., Hummelstown, on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. There is no fee.

An open house hosted by Wade Seibert and Andrew Bell will occur on Monday, May 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. Seibert and Bell will then give a presentation about Hummelstown’s transportation systems during the historical society’s May general meeting at 7 p.m. at the Parish House, located at the corner of Rosanna Street and North Alley in Hummelstown.

Veterans pension program posted

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds eligible veterans that they may qualify for a monthly pension through the state’s Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension program. Pennsylvania veterans who qualify for the pension can receive $150 per month.

Red Rose Classic dog show slated

Lancaster Kennel Club will host its 75th Red Rose Classic on Saturday, May 13, at the Lebanon Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. Over 500 dogs will compete at the event for the title of Best in Show.

Breed judging will begin at 8 a.m. with group judging scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m. Best in Show will follow

group judging.

The Lancaster Kennel Club was recently recognized by the American Kennel Club as a Centennial Club for being in existence for over 100 years. The Lancaster Kennel Club was founded in 1921.

Admission to the show is free, but there is a nominal parking fee per vehicle. Vendors and concessions will be

available. Due to safety concerns for the dogs, exhibitors, spectators, and strollers are not allowed in the show or grooming areas. In addition, only dogs entered in the show can be on-site. Visit www.lancasterkennel club.org for more details and Breed, Best of Group, and Best of Show ring times and locations.

To qualify, applicants must meet several criteria. Applicants must have been a resident of Pennsylvania upon entering the military, have received honorable discharge or discharge under honorable conditions, have sustained a service-connected injury or incurred a disease resulting in the loss or loss of use of two or more extremities (arms/hands or legs/feet), and have a disability compensation rating of 40% or greater in each limb as determined and certified by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

To apply, Pennsylvania veterans should contact the county director of veterans affairs in the county where they reside. For more information about the DMVA Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension Program, visit www.dmva.pa.gov and look under Pennsylvania Veterans for Veterans Benefits in PA.
