Sit, Stay: Selecting An Easier-To-Train Dog Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their

owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a well-socialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador

retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.
Travel Safety On An RV Adventure As camping season approaches, more people will likely be driving RVs to campgrounds, amusement parks, and music festivals. No matter the destination or length of the trip, it is important to keep safety in mind. Travelers should always be aware of the weather forecast before hitting the road so they are prepared for any rain, wind, or hail that Mother Nature may send their way. The weather can change quickly, so it is also important to keep up with weather updates via phone or radio in case bad weather appears unexpectedly. Travelers should have a weather contingency plan and make sure everyone on their trip knows what to do if an emergency occurs. See RV Adventure pg 12
Marcia “Marty” (Pohlman) Wilcox, age 68, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on April 27, at Hershey Medical Center. Born on September 19, 1953, in Hanover, she was the daughter of the late Gerald J. Pohlman and Agnes M. Horwedel Pohlman. She was married for 47 years to her beloved husband, Jan V. Wilcox. She was born and raised on her family’s farm in New Oxford, where she developed her work ethic and a love for the outdoors. After graduating from Delone Catholic High School in 1971, she attended The Pennsylvania State University, where she and Jan met and where she earned her B.A. in art in 1975. On Nov. 8, 1975, she and Jan were married at Sacred Heart Basilica in Hanover. Soon after, Marty began working at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., where she enjoyed a successful career of over 40 years, serving as manager of specialty publications. God blessed Marty with the gifts of creativity, compassion, and a strong work ethic. She brought those gifts to her career and to her friends and family through her ideas, the beautiful gifts that she created, and the encouragement that she gave to others. Upon retirement in 2018, Marty was free to enjoy her love of reading, further pur-
sue her passions for painting and knitting, care for her mother, and enjoy time with her family. Her hands were always busy, and she achieved an incredible level of skill at knitting by reading books, joining online interest groups, and simply knitting beautiful gifts for friends and family. For years, Marty quietly kept a personal journal of life events and inspiring quotes and Scripture. She was a great cook and brought her creativity to the art. She loved her annual family trip to Bethany Beach and the opportunity it gave her to spend a week with her family. She liked to walk and hike trails, and fall was her favorite season. Being a Penn State alumna, she shared her husband’s passion for Penn State football and enjoyed yearly trips to the games.
Above all else, Marty was devoted to her family. She and Jan were rarely apart as they supported each other, loved each other, and accomplished the daily tasks of life. She especially loved the time spent with her two daughters and their families. Her three grandchildren, London, Emerson, and Myles, brought her great joy and a strong sense of pride. To them, she was known as Mimi, and they loved each other dearly. Marty is survived by her husband, Jan V. Wilcox; daughter Jenny, wife of Orlando Archuleta; daughter Emily Wilcox and her partner, John Joseph “Joe” Plesic; grandchildren London, Emerson, and Myles Archuleta; brother Bruce E. Pohlman, husband of Beverly; brotherin-law Jared S. Wilcox, husband of Rebecca; sister-in-law Leigh Ann Leary, wife of Neil; and seven nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m. on May 4 at the Miller-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, Elizabethtown, with pastor Don Clark officiating. Visitation with the family was held before the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ECHOS, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, PA 17022 or the Elizabethtown Community Nursery School, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
Service Project Ideas For Children The importance of giving back to one’s community is a lesson that parents can instill in their children at an early age. Learning about worthy causes in local communities can help develop empathy in children and give them insight into those who live outside of their social and economic spheres. In addition, encouraging children to take part in community service can teach them skills they
would not necessarily learn in the classroom. Getting involved in community service as a child may also lead to a lifelong commitment to giving back. Following are some ways children can get involved in community service projects. Children can visit seniors in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, provided that the visits are cleared with the home’s staff. Kids can work
alongside seniors on craft projects or participate in games like bingo. Volunteering with a local soup kitchen can teach children about the difficulties faced by families in need. Kids also can collect canned or boxed food and deliver it to food pantries. Working with the principal of a local school, children can make plans to improve the grounds of the school. The program supports those receiving food assistance (SNAP) benefits by offering free admission to the National Civil War Museum. Free admission for up to four people is granted upon presentation of a SNAP Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. Similar free and reduced admission is available to eligible members of the public at more than 800 museums across the country. Museums for All is part of the National Civil War Museum’s commitment to seek, include, and welcome all audiences. VA2K Walk And Roll Scheduled The Veterans Affairs’ (VA) 12th annual VA2K Walk and Roll event will take place on Wednesday, May 18, at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, 1700 S. “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive Planned On Saturday, May 14, the National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 30th annual National Food Drive to Stamp Out Hunger. After two years of virtual donor drives, Lancaster County letter carriers will once again pick up nonperishable food donations. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is timed to resupply local food pantries when they are usually depleted and entering the summer with low supplies. The annual event has collected over 1.88 billion pounds of food nationally over the last 29 years. Participating households are asked to place nonperishable food items in a bag either in or around their mailbox on the morning of
May 14. All donations collected will be donated to local food pantries. The top requested nonperishable food items are cereal; pasta; pasta sauce; rice; canned fruits and vegetables; canned meals, such as soups, chili, and pasta; 100% juice; peanut butter; macaroni and cheese; canned fish or poultry; and shelf-stable milk that does not require refrigeration. Healthy, low-sodium, low-sugar items - for example, beans, either canned or dry; oatmeal and other whole grains; and canola or olive oil - are also needed. All items should be unexpired and in plastic or cardboard packaging. No glass jars or bottles should be placed in bags for donation.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of ministry for FIA, a nonprofit located in Middletown and focused on assisting missionaries in areas of limited infrastructure. To celebrate this milestone, FIA will host a free Community Fun Day at its headquarters, 3950 E. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown, on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children may participate in a “passport” tour of FIA’s six countries of service; the tour will include a bounce house, a candy cannon, balloon animals, a reptile show, and a barrel train. People of all ages are invited to enjoy a fusion demonstration, a live band, a ministry partner expo, and construction machinery. Free pork barbecue sandwiches will be provided to the first 500 attendees. Food will be available for a fee from additional food trucks. In the case of rain, activities will be moved indoors. For more information about the Fun Day event, visit www.FIAintl.org/community -fun-day/. FIA formed in 1992 to address physical challenges facing international workers serving among the leastreached people groups in Papua New Guinea. While the missionaries were equipped to learn languages, plant churches, and develop ministries, they lacked the construction and engineering knowledge required to build a house, source a water supply, or complete other tasks related to reaching the people and living among them. During its existence, FIA’s impact has expanded to include assisting over 2,600 missionaries to reach indigenous people from 80 language groups in remote locations in six countries. Teams have assisted outreach efforts in more than 58 countries in some of the most remote regions of the globe. Volunteers use their abilities and talents to serve those on the frontline, so missionaries can focus on sharing the Gospel. FIA is backed by more than 5,000 local and global prayer supporters, financial supporters, and volunteers. More than 80% of FIA’s headquarters staff volunteer their time or are supported by private funding, so more donated money goes directly to the people around the world who need it most. FIA has been named “top-rated” by GreatNonprofits, an organization that allows people to share stories on its website about their experiences with more than 1.6 million charities and nonprofit organizations. FIA has received Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating, as well as a platinum rating from GuideStar - the highest level of transparency offered to nonprofits.

in Nicaragua, Vanuatu, Bolivia, Moldova, and the western countries of Africa. Through Water and Sanitation Health (WASH) initiatives, COVID-19 relief, refugee aid, community transformation projects, and lifeskills training, FIA helps missionaries minister to hundreds of thousands of people each year. Construction of airstrips, hurricane-resistant homes, bridges, wells, and roads, as well as machinery repair and supply delivery, enable international workers to stay longer, travel farther, and make greater impacts. Through partnerships with Messiah College’s Collaboratory and Engineering departments, as well as local churches and individuals, more than 1,100 volunteers have taken part in frontline Great Commission efforts. Many bluecollar workers, students, and families enabled the completion of more than 1,600 projects during the more than 175 trips hosted by FIA.
There should be at least two ways out of the RV, including from the front and rear of the vehicle, and travelers should practice using these exits beforehand so that everyone is familiar with their duties during an emergency. For an escape to be effective, it must be planned, practiced, and rapidly put into action. Travelers should also practice fire and carbon monoxide (CO) safety. Campfires should be built at a safe distance from the RV. Fire can spread quickly, so RVs should be equipped with a fire extinguisher, such as an easy-touse fire extinguishing spray. Generators should never be used inside, where CO can
collect. Instead, they should be placed at least 10 feet from the RV. Travelers should consider bringing a portable, tabletop CO alarm equipped with a sealed battery that provides up to 10 years of protection. An RV should be serviced by a qualified mechanic before departure, and travelers should be prepared for any car troubles that could happen along the way. In case of spotty cell service, travelers should bring a map. Also, drivers should know if their auto insurance policy includes features like roadside assistance, which could help in case of an emergency. Additionally, extra water and snacks should always be kept on hand.
