Grant funds field trip to Gettysburg
John
C. Kunkel Elementary School’s Jenna Riggs and her fourth-grade class in the Middletown Area School District recently headed to Gettysburg through a grant from the American Battlefield Trust’s Field Trip Fund. The trip provided students with a hands-on history learning opportunity.
“The students are excited about seeing first hand the places we have been learning about,” Riggs said before the trip. “They will get to experience the battlefield in a way that will allow them to make connections with what up until now they have only been able to read about.”
The Field Trip Fund offers funding and assistance to kindergarten through 12grade teachers planning field trips to Civil War, War of 1812, or Revolutionary War battlefields and related historic sites. Grants are awarded based on a competitive national application process. During the 2018-19 school year, more than 7,500 students from 24 states took part in programs through awarded grant funds.
The American Battlefield Trust is dedicated to preserving America’s battlegrounds and educating the public about what happened there and why it matters today. The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization has protected more than 54,000 acres associated with the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War.

also a model volunteer through works of service. Scholarship committee chairperson Jo Kinkel shared that one of Disha’s focus areas has been Mini-THON in support of the Four Diamonds.

Camp Invention Connect available for children
This summer, children in kindergarten through sixth grade have the opportunity to attend weekly national editions of Camp Invention Connect’s STEM enrichment camp.
Camp Invention Connect is an at-home program designed to be accessible for families that do not have a local Camp Invention program in their area or those who have scheduling conflicts, a health concern, or children with needs that make an online experience
more preferable than an inperson program.
Led by qualified educators, children take on five full days of problem-solving challenges and join their fellow campers for optional collaborative sessions throughout each day. The program aims to balance active, independent hands-on exploration with opportunities for socialization from home.
An Innovator’s Toolkit of fun materials is shipped directly to each participant, and kids can set up an Innovator Workshop at home. Daily challenges are intended to motivate youths to go outdoors, get active, and stretch their imaginations, and step-by-step activity guides and digital resources are also available for participants.
The national program, featuring Camp Invention’s Elevate curriculum, is being offered this summer through July. Parents can learn more about the camp weeks that are available and register for camp at www.invent.org/camp -invention-connect.

Summertime craft ideas
Things seem to slow down in summer. The hurried pace that dominates much of the year takes a backseat to vacations, lounging around the pool, swimming in the ocean, and setting up tents at campsites.
When the weather is accommodating, there is a seemingly endless list of ways to enjoy time spent outdoors. However, inclement weather such as thunderstorms or rain may sometimes cause people to stay inside. On these days, children may make crafts using some of the following ideas.
A craft that has persisted for generations is the friendship bracelet. With some general craft supplies, such as embroi-
dery thread, beads, plastic lanyards, or other jewelry-making materials, kids can make and share a variety of friendship bracelets.
Leather sewing kits are another option. Families can evoke the feelings of summer camp at home with leather sewing kits that enable everyone to make handcrafted leather wallets or small purses.
Children may also dye canvas shoes, bandanas or other accessories using commercially produced or homemade dyes. Those who want to make their own dyes may consider using teabags, berry juice, turmeric powder, or other items.
A variety of materials gathered from the outdoors can
Safety tips for summer
Summer is synonymous with relaxation and fun in the sun. The relaxed nature of summer can make it easy to overlook safety concerns that run the gamut from heat-related illnesses to bug bites to water play injuries. Keeping the following safety tips in mind can ensure the coming months are as safe as they are fun.
Sizzling summer days pose a significant threat if the proper measures are not take to avoid heat-related illnesses. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), heat exhaustion, which occurs when the body loses excessive water and salt, and heat stroke, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted is marked by the body’s inability to control its temperature, can escalate rapidly. The NSC identified individuals who work outdoors, infants and young children, people who are 65 and older, people who are ill, and people who are overweight as those most at risk of heat-related illnesses. Such illnesses are entirely preventable, and the CDC recommends remaining indoors in air-conditioned rooms, drinking plenty of fluids but avoid-
also be incorporated into crafts.
At the next beach excursion, pick up differently shaped shells to save for making seashell creatures. The shells can be painted and glued together to resemble different animals or whatever designs one can imagine.
Families may also gather sea glass remnants that washed up on beaches. An adult can use a very thin drill bit to make holes in the glass, and then the glass can be fed through earring hooks or chains to create one-of-a-kind jewelry.
Kids can have also fun gathering smooth pebbles from trails or at the shores of lakes. The pebbles can be painted with various designs or sweet
sentiments and then left around the neighborhood for others to discover.
To make sun prints, people should gather natural items such as fern boughs, shells and feathers. They should visit a craft store for a special lightsensitive solution that can be painted onto thick craft paper. After painting the paper, set the natural items on top and let the sun do its work to create silhouettes of the nature items.
Natural items like twigs and feathers, along with other supplies such as yarn, can be used to make dreamcatchers, as well.
Summer craft ideas abound to keep everyone entertained all season long.

ing alcohol, wearing loose and lightweight clothing, wearing a hat when outdoors, and replacing salt lost from sweating by drinking fruit juice or sports drinks.
Additionally, people should take care of their skin when spending time outside. It is imperative that individuals apply sunscreen before going outside and then reapply it throughout the day as necessary. Not only is sunburn unpleasant, but it also increases a person’s risk for skin cancer and affects the body’s ability to cool itself, which can increase the risk for heat stroke.
Mosquitoes are more than a mere nuisance. Mosquitoes can carry an assortment of viruses, including the Zika virus and West Nile virus. Such viruses are often thought of as a problem for people in faraway countries, but the NSC noted that the Aedes mosquito, which is a known transmitter of the Zika virus, has appeared in various regions of the globe, including the continental United States and popular vacation destinations like Mexico and Central and South America. The NSC recom-
Fundraiser to benefit Humane Society
Evangelical United Methodist Church, 157 E. Water St., Middletown, will host a chicken parmesan and spaghetti fundraiser dinner on Monday, June 19, from 5 to 6:45 p.m. or until sold out. Donations only will be accepted for the
mends that everyone, and especially individuals who work outdoors, apply mosquito repellant before going outside and continue to do so as necessary throughout the day. In addition, clothing treated with the insecticide permethrin may help to repel mosquitoes.
The CDC reported that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death of children between the ages of 1 and 4. Although children might be most vulnerable to water-related accidents and death, adults also must exercise caution when around the water. The NSC noted that individuals who do not know how to swim should avoid the water, be it in a lake, river, ocean, or pool. Individuals also should never swim alone and only swim in areas super-
vised by a lifeguard. When swimming at a private residence, children should never be allowed to swim unless an adult is supervising. Adults also should avoid alcohol when swimming.
Summer is a season to relax, but it is also a season when safety should be a top priority for people of all ages.

The event is open to the community, and proceeds will go to the Humane Society of Harrisburg. Guests may dine in or take out their meals. The church is handicapped-accessible. For more information, call 717-944-6181.

Father’s Day gift ideas
Each year on the third Sunday in June, people honor the special men who help make the familial engine run. Father’s Day is celebrated in a variety of ways, including gift-giving. Anyone looking for the right gift for Dad this Father’s Day may consider the following ideas.
“These kids get a chance to go to where history was made, where our country was created and defined,” said Trust president David Duncan of Field Trip Fund recipients. “Battlefields are outdoor classrooms that will teach (young) Americans about our democratic republic.”
The Trust hopes that through visiting preserved
battlefields and walking in the footsteps of the citizen soldiers who fought there, the leaders of tomorrow receive a foundation of good citizenship. The Trust strives to produce excellent educational resources in a variety of formats for both educators and the public.

Litter prevention program receives grant
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB) will continue its partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to implement the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) at rest stops across the state with a $20,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful. Awardees agree to encourage the enforcement of litter laws, which includes cigarette litter, and include an education component about the consequences of cigarette and other tobacco-related litter.
The CLPP begins with a scan, or physical count, of cigarette butts and other tobacco-related products in a designated area. Ash receptacles are then installed at transition points of entry, like entrances to public buildings. Two additional scans are performed, one midway through the year and a final count at the end of the program. The effectiveness of the program is measured by comparing a preand post-program count of cigarette butts and other tobacco products.
The grant award includes funding for portable ashtrays, or pocket ashtrays, to distribute to residents. KPB hopes to raise travelers’ awareness about the issue of proper cigarette butt disposal
Father’s Day comes just as spring is winding down and summer is about to begin. That means Dad will soon fire up the grill several nights per week if he has not already. Why not give Dad a new grill this season? Many people have become interested in making smoked foods
in recent years, and, if Dad is one of these people, then a smoker and grill hybrid may be the gift for him. If Dad prefers the convenience of grilling at a moment’s notice, then a new propane grill can fit the bill. Dads who love to tailgate outside their favorite football stadium may like a new portable grill to bring their pregame celebrations up a notch.
If Dad is a devoted drinker of craft beers, then a subscription to a beer club could be appropriate. Clubs vary, and many offer an array of membership options, but typically these groups handpick beers from an assort-
ment of participating breweries, some local and some from distant, though likely domestic, locales.
If Dad is an avid golfer, he may have his sights set on courses where he would like to play. Families can pool their resources and give Dad a trip to a course he’s been dreaming of visiting. Courses across North America have hosted PGA Tour events, meaning Dad could end up playing the same holes his favorite professionals have played. Many clubs across the U.S. offer stunning views and challenging rounds that will be sure to please Dad this Father’s Day.
No man cave is complete without memorabilia. If Dad is a diehard sports fan, help him decorate his go-to spot to watch his favorite team with some authentic memorabilia. Whether families give a framed, game-worn jersey or a bat with Dad’s name engraved on it or a basketball signed by the members of his favorite team, these items will look great on the wall of any father’s man cave.
The right Father’s Day gift can make this special day even more meaningful for the men who do so much for their families throughout the year.

with messaging and marketing campaigns and by placing ash receptacles at entrances to rest stop buildings.
KPB has a partnership with TerraCycle to expand the program to include recycling and composting the cigarette butt waste. Cigarettes collected through CLPP are shipped to TerraCycle, where the various materials that make up a cigarette are separated and processed. The filters are melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make recycled industrial products, such as plastic pallets. The residual tobacco and paper are separated out and composted in a specialized process.
Cigarette butts that are thrown on the ground can contaminate soil and ground water with chemicals and heavy metals, and they can fatally affect birds, animals and marine life, which often mistake them for food. Additionally, the filters, made of cellulose acetate, never fully disappear from the environment.

Summertime leisure activities
During the summer, many people have more time on their hands due to vacations from school and work and less hectic activity schedules, so this season often affords more time to relax and recharge. People may consider the following leisure activities.
Whether it is a pool, a lake or an ocean, the water beckons each summer. Simply sitting on a beach or beside a lake or pool can be a great way to pass the time without much stress.
Paddleboarding is another leisurely way to spend a summer day. Paddleboarding requires physical exertion, so this might not be the ideal activity for those looking to relax without lifting a finger. However, paddleboarders typically take to the water when it is at its most calm, making this a great activity for those who want to capitalize on peaceful, serene summer vibes.
Few activities may be more relaxing than fishing.
Although there are many different ways to fish, some of which require considerable physical effort, casting a line and waiting for a fish to bite is a relaxing activity. Additionally, spending time in nature has been found to reduce stress and lower one’s heart rate. Books can make for good companions on warm summer afternoons. Reading is such a popular summer pas-
time that many bookstores set up displays featuring books that are suggested beach reads, providing inspiration for individuals who are not sure which books to dive into. And much like other summertime leisure activities, reading has been linked to reducing stress.
On summer afternoons when it is raining or too hot outside, or when individuals

simply want to spend some time indoors, they might consider visiting a museum. Many museums do not typically draw crowds in summer, making this an ideal season to visit. Many offer discounted prices to individuals like seniors and students.
Summer is a season of leisure, and there are many activities that align with that spirit of relaxation.
