Woodbridge named orchestra music director
TheHershey Symphony Orchestra has announced that maestro Greg Woodbridge has been named the new music director and conductor beginning with the 2023-24 season this fall.
Woodbridge has served as principal guest conductor for the Hershey Symphony since 2017. In addition, he is the associate conductor for the Harrisburg Symphony, a position he has held for 10 years.
“It is an honor to be invited to build on the long-term success of the Hershey Symphony,” said Woodbridge. “The talent and dedication of the musicians is truly incredible, and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in the years ahead.”
Woodbridge began studying piano at the age of 7 and violin at the age of 9. He holds degrees in piano performance and orchestral conducting from Penn State University. He also studied at the Pierre Monteux Conducting Institute in Maine with Michael Jinbo; with Ennio Nicotra, founder of the Ilya Musin Society; and at master classes with Gustav Meier, JoAnn Falletta, and Leonid Korchmar.
Woodbridge was previously music director and conductor of the Central Pennsylvania Youth Orchestra, the Wednesday Club Youth Orchestra, the Central Pennsylvania Symphony, and the York Youth Symphony Orchestra. He was a longtime educator in the Derry Township School District, where he taught strings

and orchestra. He is currently the music director of the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra and holds a faculty position at the Lancaster Country Day School.
“It is my goal that we all grow through the experience of sharing great symphonic music together,” said Woodbridge. “Our audiences are wildly supportive of what we do, and I look forward to taking on exciting classical and pops musical projects in our beautiful venues.”
The Hershey Symphony Orchestra’s new season will be announced later this summer. To learn more and to sign up for news and events updates, visit www.hersheysymphony.org.
During the months of June and July, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) wildlife staff will provide free guided tours showcasing the rare regal fritillary butterflies at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG), near Annville.
Reservations are required and attendance is limited. All attendees, including children, must register at www.ftig.i sportsman.net/Butterfly Tours.aspx and obtain a free permit. To attend a tour, participants must present a permit for that specific date and time slot.
Guided tours will be offered, rain or shine, on Friday, June 30; Saturday, July 1; Friday, July 7; and Saturday, July 8. No rain dates will be provided.
Attendees will be required to travel from the meeting location to the tour location in their personal vehicles. Tours will last approximately one hour plus driving time. Meeting location and parking information will be provided after obtaining a permit.
Visitors of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend. Tours will be on foot on gravel roads and mowed paths.
Attendees should bring drinking water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for uneven terrain. Wandering off the path, into the fields, or away from the tour guide is prohibited. There will be little or no shade on the tour route.
Like many military installations, FTIG is home to a diverse population of plants and animals, many of which are rare and considered species of conservation concern. It is home to 49 species of mammals, 143 species of breeding birds, 37 species of reptiles and amphibians, 35 species of fish, more than 800 species of plants and many notable species of invertebrates, including 86 species of butterflies and more than 500 species of moths.
These species persist at FTIG because it provides an assortment of high-quality habitats. These habitats include rare early successional ecosystems such as grasslands, thickets, shrub lands and
young forests, which were created and maintained from disturbances caused by military training, fires and conservation efforts. The installation is home to 1,000 acres of scrub oak and pitch pine barrens and approximately 2,200 acres of native grassland habitat. FTIG, which serves as headquarters to the DMVA and the Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG), is a live-fire, maneuver military training facility in Pennsylvania. The 17,000-acre installation balances one of the region’s most ecologically diverse areas with a military mission that annually supports nearly 18,000 PNG personnel and more than 113,000 additional personnel from other branches of service, multinational partners and interagency partners at the federal, state and local levels.
For general inquiries about the tours, email RA-DMVA-Wildlife@pa.gov or call 717-861-3299.

World War II veteran to speak
The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will meet on Thursday, July 6, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. Wilbur “Jack” Myers, 100, will speak about his experiences as an anti-tank gunner, supporting the 104th Infantry Division, in the European Theater. Myers, of Hagerstown, Md., entered service in 1943, training in Texas before being sent across the Atlantic to Cherbourg, France. He operated a 3-inch anti-tank gun and later worked in a 40-ton M36 tank destroyer. His battalion advanced to Aachen, Germany, and the Siegfried line and joined Patton’s Army at the Battle of the Bulge. During the battle, the battalion served as defense along the Ruhr River.
Myers’ left hand was injured on March 20, 1945, and he spent the remainder of the war recovering in England. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service.
The meeting is open to the
public, and no registration is required. For more information, visit www.centralpaww 2roundtable.org or join the livestream on the YouTube channel Central PA WWII Roundtable.
Falcons banded in educational event
In collaboration with the biologists from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, all three of Harrisburg’s young peregrine falcons (eyasses) were fitted with identification bands.
Banding provides biologists the ability to identify a specific, individual bird. It also can provide information on where the bird was banded, how old it was at banding, and its sex. Each young fal-

Funding awarded to combat opioid epidemic
To advance the fight against the opioid epidemic, the Dauphin County commissioners recently approved funding for 17 programs aiming to prevent opioid abuse, treat those who are in the midst of active addiction and support long-term recovery.
The grant funding comes from lawsuit settlements, not tax dollars. With help from an advisory board, the commissioners evaluated applications to identify proposals that will have the greatest impact in communities throughout Dauphin County.
In early 2022, Pennsylvania established the Opioid Misuse and Addiction Abatement Trust following settlements with three pharmaceutical distributors - Cardinal, McKesson and AmerisourceBergen - and Johnson & Johnson. The state was expected to receive up to $1.07 billion under the initial settlements, with Dauphin
County’s portion being approximately $1.1 million.
Commissioner George P. Hartwick III, in partnership with the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania, advised state officials on how the settlement money could best be used at the local level.
Grant awards in Dauphin County include Arcana Recovery in conjunction with Dauphin County Drug and Alcohol Services, $75,000 to use software and data to reduce recidivism; Bethany Christian Services, $75,000 to expand the RENEW Program for pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorder; Catholic Charities, $75,000 to add staff members at sober-living houses; Dauphin County CASA, $28,000 for training on mental health and substance use disorders; Daystar Center, $70,499 for traumainformed therapies and

training; Gaudenzia Inc., $75,000 for case management for pregnant and postpartum women; and Hamilton Health, $75,000 for reentry case management.
Also, JFT Recovery and Veterans Support Services, $74,984 for the Millersburg facility and warm handoff program; Mazzitti & Sullivan Employee Assistance Program, $75,000 for the police peer support program; Penn State Health OB-GYN, $75,000 for staffing the new Maternal Substance Use Disorder Clinic; Penn State College of Medicine - Millersburg, $75,000 for vending machines with personal care items, resources and the overdose-reversing drug naloxone; Penn State College of Medicine, $75,000 for medication-assisted treatment education and training for physicians; Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge, $70,000 for Naaman Center for outpatient treatment; Pennsylvania Adult and Teen Challenge, $70,000 for case managers and training; Dauphin County ASPIRE, $45,000 for suicide prevention; UPMC Pinnacle Foundation, $75,000 for mobile treatment; and White Deer Run Allenwood, $21,780 for The Bridge, a nerve stimulation device to lessen the severity of opioid withdrawal symptoms.

Traditions of Hershey receives recognition
For the second consecutive year, Traditions of Hershey was recognized as Best Assisted Living by U.S. News & World Report, a multifaceted digital media company known for its rankings and consumer advice.
The “Best” ratings recognize senior living communities in the following categories: independent living, assisted living, memory care and continuing care retirement community.
Assisted living is sometimes referred to as personal care, as is the case with Traditions of Hershey, which provides personal care services for seniors needing assistance with activities of daily living and medication management. The community, located at 100 N. Larkspur Drive in Palmyra, also offers independent living.
U.S. News produced the
Best Senior Living ratings from consumer satisfaction survey data derived from resident and family member responses. To be included in the analysis, a senior living community had to participate in a consumer satisfaction survey between April and November 2022 and meet eligibility criteria as defined by U.S. News.
Residents of Traditions of Hershey and their families noted excellence in value, activities and enrichment, management, safety, care services, location and environment and staff and hospitality.

Venison burgers
Backyard barbecues and fireworks displays are hallmarks of the Fourth of July. Fireworks are best left to the professionals, but anyone can master the art of grilling burgers and hot dogs.
Traditional burgers are made with ground beef. However, curious grill masters can explore the many ways to experiment with burgers without sacrificing flavor. This recipe for “Venison Burgers” from “Texas Favorites” by Jon Bonnell utilizes venison and pork in lieu of beef. The result is a mouthwatering burger worthy of inclusion in any Fourth of July festivities.
Venison Burgers
Serves 8
2 pounds venison meat
1/2 pound pork shoulder
1/2 pound slab bacon
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Pinch of cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons hot sauce
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Optional toppings
Bacon
Cheddar cheese
Guacamole
Makayla Shutt, Miranda Ulrey, Lauren Wahlers, Tobias Waters and Madelyn Weaver. Not in attendance were Shannon Angerer and Morgan Sparks, who were volunteering with the district’s outdoor education program at Camp Hebron.

Clean the venison well and remove any fat or connective tissue. Cut the venison, pork shoulder and bacon into large chunks. Combine all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl and let marinate for one hour in the refrigerator. Grind everything together using the small plate on a grinder. Form into burger patties by hand, and grill or pan-sear. Cook to medium (135 degrees Fahrenheit internal temperature), then remove from the grill and top with cheese and or other toppings.
Hazard of battery-related fires addressed at summit
June is National Safety Month, making it a good time to tackle the escalating dangers associated with the improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are the rechargeable batteries that power everything from household electronic devices, like cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, e-cigarettes, electronic toothbrushes and remote controls, to electric vehicles and even children’s toys. Some extended-life non-rechargeable batteries, found at many retail outlets, also contain lithium and can cause fires too.

ed by the Pennsylvania Recycling Markets Center (RMC) on June 8 in Bethlehem, representatives of Pennsylvania’s waste and recycling industry, and the Pennsylvania RMC, along with state agency officials, gathered to discuss what to do with batteries at the end of their life and how to educate consumers about their safe disposal.
As more lithium-ion batteries are discarded and improperly placed in curbside residential waste or recycling collection containers and bags, the safety risks related to their combustibility are increasing. Once in the recycling or waste stream,
these batteries get mixed with tons of materials and placed in hot temperatures under significant compression.
Consumer information about proper disposal, including local drop-off locations, can be found at www.call2recycle.org. All Call2Recycle drop-off locations accept used rechargeable batteries.
Additional information can be found at www.epa.gov/recycle /frequent-questions-lithium-ion -batteries, a recently-launched Environmental Protection Agency website dedicated to questions on lithium-ion batteries.

Organization provides information about cataracts
Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health and safety organization, has once again declared June as Cataract Awareness Month in an effort to provide patients, care partners and professionals with information on topics related to types of cataracts, risk factors, symptoms, cataract surgery and available financial assistance resources. The group offers a dedicated web resource at www.PreventBlindness.org /cataract and free materials in English and Spanish, such as fact sheets and social media graphics.
Prevent Blindness also offers the “Understanding Cataract” episode of its “Focus on Eye Health Expert Series.” Prevent Blindness president and CEO Jeff Todd discusses cataract and cataract surgery with Dr. Albert Cheung, cataract, cornea, anterior segment specialist with Virginia Eye
Consultants and assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Department of Ophthalmology. Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens that blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. According to the National Eye Institute, although there may be no early symptoms, patients may begin to notice cloudy or blurry vision; colors that look faded; difficulty seeing at night; lamps, sunlight or headlights appearing too bright; a halo around lights; seeing double, which sometimes goes away as the cataract grows; and frequent changes to the prescription of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, according to The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.
Cataracts can affect people of any age. Cataracts may be congenital - present at birth -
or developed by an infant, child or adolescent. Metabolic disorders like diabetes and eye injury can also cause cataracts, and smoking increases the risk of developing the condition. The risk of cataracts is higher for those who have a family member with the disease, so people should tell their eye doctor about their family’s eye health history.
Cataract surgery is one of the most common operations in the United States. An average of 4 million cataract surgeries are performed in this country every year, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Prevent Blindness offers more information at www.Prevent Blindness.org/cataract-surgery and in the printable “Guide to Cataract Surgery” fact sheet.
If surgery is recommended, the eye surgeon may remove the lens with the cataract and replace it with an intraocular
lens (IOL). The surgeon implants the IOL in about the same place as the natural lens, so that it results in the most natural vision.
The monofocal IOL is the most commonly used IOL. It is usually used to correct for distance vision. Using this IOL option means that patients will likely still use glasses for close vision.
Multifocal IOLs provide both distance and near correction at the same time.
Accommodative IOLs move or change shape inside the eye, allowing correct vision at different distances. Toric IOLs are used for those with astigmatism.
For free information on cataracts or cataract surgery, visit www.PreventBlindness .org/cataract. For a listing of vision care financial assistance programs in English or Spanish, visit www.PreventBlindness .org/vision-care-financial -assistance-information/.
