Summer camp provides opportunities to learn Lower

Dauphin Middle School wrapped up three weeks of summer camp in July, sponsored by the Lower Dauphin Falcon Foundation (LDFF). The camp, once known as Summer Science Camp, has grown through the past three summers to include additional options. Now called Falcon Foundation Camp, the program is open to incoming sixth- through eighth-grade Lower Dauphin students and offers numerous one-week classes during a three-week period.

Students made new friends, learned new skills, and challenged themselves in many ways.

This summer’s camp ran from June 26 to 29, July 10 to 13 and July 17 to 20 from 9 a.m. to noon and hosted more than 200 students. Campers had the opportunity to participate in a variety of sessions, including Chess, Paper Roller Coasters, Girl Power, Digital Photography, Crafty Robots, and Phys Ed Favorites. Students made new friends, learned new skills, and challenged themselves in many ways. The camp was intended to offer a safe place for youths to go while schools were not in session while also providing additional learning with hands-on activities.

Homeland Hospice receives national honor

Homeland Hospice, a nonprofit hospice program that serves communities throughout central Pennsylvania, has been named a 2023 Hospice CAHPS Honors Award recipient by HEALTHCAREfirst, a national provider of services for hospice and home health agencies.

The Hospice CAHPS Honors Award recognizes agencies that continuously provide a positive patient experience and high quality of

care as measured from the patient and caregiver point of view. The award acknowledges the highest performing agencies by analyzing their results from the Hospice Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) survey, a nationally recognized tool that hospice agencies use to assess and improve patient care and patient and caregiver satisfaction.

Homeland Hospice pro-

vides end-of-life care in a person’s home or wherever the person resides, including nursing facilities, throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. The program aims to help patients live as fully and comfortably as possible by providing symptom and pain relief, care services and therapies, spiritual support and on-call support.

Homeland Hospice offers an in-home relief program to

Veterans’ Trust Fund grants awarded

Twelve Pennsylvania county Veterans Affairs offices have been awarded $150,000 in grants, and 21 charitable or

Veteran Service Organizations have received $650,000 in grants from the Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF), administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA).

The VTF is funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily make a donation when applying for or renewing their driver’s license, photo ID, or motor vehicle registration. Additionally, the VTF receives proceeds from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates and private donations. Since the grant program began in 2013, a total of more than $6.6 mil-

lion has been awarded to organizations that serve Pennsylvania veterans.

Grantees slated to receive funding identified over $2 million in matching funds pledged toward grant-funded initiatives. Combined with the VTF grants, the fundraising efforts will result in more than $2.8 million for veterans’ initiatives in Pennsylvania over the next two years.

A total of $150,000 in grant funding was available for new, innovative, or expanded programs or services provided by county directors of Veterans Affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The three areas of emphasis for grantees in this category

patient families, as well as bereavement support to families following the death of their loved one.

Homeland Hospice is part of Homeland at Home, a community outreach program of Homeland Center, which provides a full continuum of home-based services to care for patients and to support families as their needs change.

In addition to hospice care, Homeland at Home

services include Homeland HomeHealth, which is inhome physician-ordered medical treatment; Homeland HomeCare, which is inhome non-medical daily living assistance; and Homeland Palliative Care, which provides comfort and relief from the symptoms and stress of serious illness.

For more information about Homeland at Home and its programs, visit www .homelandathome.org.

were veterans’ outreach, transportation services, and homelessness.

Among the grantees was the Chester County Office of Veterans Affairs, which receive $15,000 to provide outreach and awareness services to veterans.

The VTF grant also identified $650,000 in funding available to veteran service organizations with 501(c)(19) status and nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organizations with a mission of serving Pennsylvania veterans. Funding priorities for grants in this category were transportation services, behavioral health initiatives, homelessness, and employment and education.

The grantees include Build-

ing Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga, receiving $40,000 to provide interactive equine therapy to veterans; the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg, $40,000 to support the Military Share program; Good Karma Garage in Harrisburg, $39,100 to provide reduced vehicle repair costs and services to veterans; Guitars for Vets, Chapter 90, in Lancaster, $4,950 to provide therapeutic services to veterans; and rabbitCARES in York, $35,000 for transportation services to veterans.

All grant awards are contingent upon the completion of a fully executed grant agreement.

Resources posted for mitigating electrical fire hazards

With temperatures breaking records around the world, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is distributing information on how to beat the heat safely. The resources include action steps and tip sheets that can help residents stay firesafe when using portable air conditioners, fans, and other cooling devices in warmer weather.

NFPA advises people to plug only one heat-producing appliance, such as a coffee maker or toaster, into a receptacle outlet at a time. Plug major appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, or air conditioners, directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used. Check electrical cords to make sure they do not run across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended only for temporary

use. Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets in the home to reduce the use of extension cords.

People should also turn off lights when they are not in the room and unplug appliances when not in use.

Residents should call a qualified electrician or their landlord if they encounter any of the following warning signs in a house or apartment: frequent problems with blowing fuses or

tripping circuit breakers, a tingling feeling when touching an electrical appliance, discolored or warm wall outlets, a burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance, flickering or dimming lights, or sparks from an outlet.

In the case of an electrical power outage due to a storm, it is important to also understand how to safely use a portable generator. For tip sheets and other resources, visit www.nfpa.org.

DMVA available to help veterans locate lost documents

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) works to assist veterans with locating their lost DD Form 214 (DD-214) and other military documents so they can get credit for time served and receive benefits for which they qualify.

The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation or discharge from active duty in the U.S. armed forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this document, there could be significant delays when a veteran seeks benefits earned through military service.

The DMVA can also assist with locating the DD-215, which is used to correct

errors or make additions to a DD-214, helping to ensure that veterans have accurate discharge documentation.

The easiest way to manage military documents and avoid having to frantically search for them is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military.

Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate his or her DD-214/215 or other military documentation may call 800-547-2838 or email RA-REQ@pa.gov. More information about locating military documents can be found by visiting www.dmva.pa.gov and searching for “Records Request Program.”

Another way to stay in touch is for veterans, family members and people who work with veterans to sign up for the DMVA’s Veterans Registry by visiting www .register.dmva.pa.gov.

Nominations sought for award

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is accepting nominations for the annual Mira Lloyd Dock Partnership Diversity Award, given in recognition of conservation work in environmental justice communities in Pennsylvania.

In Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection considers any census block group where 20% or more individuals live in poverty or 30% or more of the population identifies as a minority to be in an environmental justice area.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, welcomes nominations of anyone in Pennsylvania who has shown exemplary leadership in his or her community through environmental restoration, awareness, education or conservation work. This work includes community tree plantings, rain garden or native pollinator garden installation or plantings,

regenerative agriculture or urban farming or permaculture, or community beautification in an environmental justice community.

Nominees are ranked on their community engagement, collaboration and environmental conservation work with environmental justice communities in support of planting 10 million trees in Pennsylvania. Nominees are given credit for using science, research, innovative and creative approaches to conservation. A volunteer committee of environmental leaders, past Dock Award winners, and others will determine the winners.

To submit a nomination, visit https://tenmillion trees.org/contact/mld/. Forms are also available by emailing keystonetrees@ cbf.org or calling 717200-4543. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 29. The award winners will receive $5,000 worth of

native trees and supplies from the partnership, to be used for a 2024 tree project.

Now in its fourth year, the award was created to honor the spirit of Mira Lloyd Dock, who pursued urban beautification and forest conservation at a time when women and people of color were not welcomed at the decisionmaking table.

Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. She was an advocate for Penn’s Woods and in 1901 was appointed to the State Forestry Reservation Commission by Pennsylvania Gov. William Stone.

The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership will present the award during the Pennsylvania Forestry Association’s annual symposium on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College.

Overdose awareness event slated Food Truck Friday planned

International Overdose Awareness Day is observed around the world on Aug. 31. It is a day to acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died from a drug overdose, and it aims to reduce the stigma of a drugrelated death. Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss will host an event to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. It is open to anyone regardless of if their loved one was served by Hospice & Community Care.

The event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 31, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy,

Cumberland Singers posts open house

The Cumberland Singers, a Mechanicsburg-based community women’s choir, will host an open house for prospective members on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Mechanicsburg Middle School, 1750 S. Market St., Mechanicsburg. Sopranos and altos are invited to attend and

learn about the choir, which will perform three free holiday concerts the weekend of Saturday, Dec. 16.

The Cumberland Singers have been performing concerts in the West Shore area since 1974, and the group has recently become an auditioned ensemble of

approximately 40 women. Interested singers may visit www.cumberlandsingers.org or call 717-421-1879 to schedule an audition any time during the month of August.

To make reservations for the open house, email cumberland singers@gmail.com.

and will feature keynote speaker Lori Kuhn, a boardcertified registered nurse, certified grief counselor and grief recovery method specialist. She has been impacted by the death of her daughter from an overdose. Kuhn, who lost her child as well as her husband within a four-year period, will talk about her journey through processing her grief to becoming whole, happy, and able to move forward with her life.

There is no cost to attend the International Overdose Awareness Day event, but registration is required. To register, visit www.Hospice Community.org/oad or call the Pathways Center at 717391-2413.

One last bash as summer winds down is a great way to send off a season that is synonymous with recreation and leisure. An end-of-summer soirée also provides an opportunity to get together with friends and family before a new school year begins and families’ schedules fill up.

As August inches closer to September, hosts can consider the following tips for planning a memorable sendoff to summer.

Avoid Labor Day weekend. Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer in many places, but hosts may want to avoid choosing this popular three-day weekend for their end-of-summer soirée. Travel is undeniably popular on Labor Day weekend, and hosts likely will not want their event to conflict with guests’ travel plans. The weekend before Labor Day may produce a greater turnout.

foods until the following spring. So while it is alright to offer some alternatives, such as meat cooked on a smoker or grilled fish, be sure to offer the standard hamburgers and hot dogs as well.

Invite the neighbors. It is tempting to throw a seasonending bash that lasts into the wee hours, but that can be problematic for hosts whose neighbors are within arm’s length. That potentially sticky situation can be remedied by inviting the neighbors to the party. Neighbors will not be upset by a little extra nighttime noise if they are living it up as well. If that is not an option, hosts can just remember to turn the volume down a notch once the sun sets.

izenship; job skills; service to the community; health and hygiene; and life coping skills. Graduates often receive high school credits, credentials or a GED. There is no tuition cost to attend. Meals, housing, uniforms and school supplies are provided at no charge.

American Legion post sets golf event

The Dominic D. DiFrancesco Memorial Post 594 of the American Legion will host a golf tournament in memory of Ford “Skip” Carnes Jr. on Sunday, Oct. 1. The event will take place at Sunset Golf Course, 2601 Sunset Drive, Middletown, and will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Golfers may register indi-

vidually or in a group of four. The fee includes dinner at Post 594 after the tournament.

For more information and to register by Sunday, Sept. 17, call Bill Douglass at Post 594 at 717-944-4797 or email alpost594@gmail.com. Hole sponsorships are also available.

Pick a summer theme. An end-of-summer party should have a theme that evokes the season’s special vibe. A beach theme with some sand in the backyard, specialty cocktails served with mini beach umbrellas and, of course, water play for adults and children can help to establish a vibe that is synonymous with summer.

Serve traditional fare. Although people who already hosted a handful of backyard barbecues this summer might have had their fill of hamburgers and hot dogs, an end-of-summer party may be the last time people eat such

Create a contingency plan. August can be a bit on the rainy side in many areas, and although summer storms tend to come and go in the blink of an eye, it is best to have a contingency plan in place. If possible, ensure outdoor entertaining areas can provide some respite from the elements if need be. A well-placed pergola can keep guests and food safe from the rain, and a retractable patio awning can provide an extra layer of protection. Hosts also can clear out part of their home interior and have some games at the ready in case the party has to move inside for a little while. An end-of-summer soirée can be the perfect way to say so long to a beloved time of year.
