Local Girl Scouts complete Silver Award project
BY FRANCINE FULTONMembers
of a local Girl Scout troop recently completed their Silver Award project at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SSBVM) Catholic School in Middletown. Students will be able to enjoy the Scouts’ work for years to come.
The Scouts, led by troop leader Kay Livelsberger and mentor Angela Waner, SSBVM principal, installed five drums for the younger students to play with and painted multiplication tables in the outdoor recess lot.
Scouts who completed the project were Gwen Hoover and Kaylee Meisinger, students at Elizabethtown Area Middle School, and Trinity Garcia, Ava Livelsberger and Meadow May, students at Donegal Junior High School. The girls are members of Troop 71686, which meets at Conoy Brethren in Christ Church, Elizabethtown.
“The Girl Scouts did a great job. The drums are in our preschool Play Lab,” noted Mindy Kennedy, SSBVM director of development, explaining that the Play Lab is an outdoor classroom used in early childhood education. “The multiplication table is on our recess lot. Kindergarten
the Scouts completed a total of 251 hours working on the project.
The idea for the project originated with Ava, whose family members are parishioners at SSBVM Catholic Church. “Our troop leader told us to ask around in order to figure out what was (a need) in the community,” said Meadow. “Ava asked the pastor and people at the church, and they said that that they needed the five musical drums to be put in. We came up with the multiplication tables.”
through eighth-grade students can access them during daily outdoor recess. Our teachers may also take their math lessons outside for games on the table.”
Meadow explained that the Silver Award is the second-highest award in Girl Scouts. “Each girl must put in 50 hours,” she said, noting that
The troop, along with help from family members, completed the project on weekends from April through August. “The school had the drums, and we had to put them in concrete,” Meadow explained. “We had to raise the money, but we got a donation from Home Depot in Lancaster.” JB Hostetter & Sons of Mount Joy donated the use of a cement mixer.

Gildea named Lower Dauphin superintendent
The Lower Dauphin Board of School Directors named Robert Gildea as district superintendent at a special meeting on Aug. 28.
Gildea was selected by the board to replace Rob Schultz, who resigned in April. Gildea will be the Lower Dauphin School District’s sixth superintendent of schools since the district’s founding in the 1960s.
Gildea has served as superintendent of schools in the Hollidaysburg Area School District since 2013.
“It is truly an honor to be chosen by the Lower Dauphin Board of School Directors to lead what, in my
view, is an amazing school district!” Gildea said. “I am looking forward to becoming part of the community and getting to know the students, teachers, administrators, support staff, parents and community supporters.
“With everyone I have had the pleasure of meeting through the selection process there is a common theme - a strong sense of school and community pride. I am looking forward to building upon the great things that are happening here to ensure every student is empowered with the skills needed to successfully See Superintendent pg 2

Gildea also spoke about the knowledge, skills and abilities he plans to bring to the district to build upon Lower Dauphin’s existing culture.
“I feel the most critical attribute of a leader is the willingness and desire to invest in the community that he/she serves. People want to follow a leader who they know and trust,” he said. “In order to build that trust, it is imperative to build relationships with all constituents. I have used that social capital over the past 10 years to navigate challenging financial and political times within my former school district, no different than the challenges many districts have faced.
“My experience has given me the ability to see issues through the lens of those with opposing viewpoints and guide all involved to an amicable resolution.”
In addition to serving as superintendent, Gildea was the Cyber Academy director and athletic director in Hollidaysburg Area School District from 2012 to 2013 and

Civil War dance demonstration set
The Victorian Dance Ensemble (VDE), the performing troupe of the Civil War Dance Foundation, will present a demonstration of Civil War-era dances at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18, at Zion Lutheran Church, 100 W. Main St., Hummelstown. After the demonstration, the audience will be invited to learn some dances that were popular in the 1860s. The event is sponsored by the Hummelstown Area Historical Society. There is no fee to attend, but donations are welcome.
The VDE has presented programs for the Smithsonian Institute, Ken Burns American Journey Tours, the National Park Service at Antietam, programs at Gettysburg, Harrisburg’s Whitaker Center, the National Civil War Museum, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and numerous other museums and historic sites. The ensemble also provides dance instruction and floor managers for vintage balls, including the Sons of Union Veterans’ National Civil War Ball on Remembrance Day in Gettysburg and
the Civil War Preservation Ball in the rotunda of the state Capitol in Harrisburg.
In 2011, the group was named the Re-enactment Unit of the Year by the Civil War Trust in recognition of its support of preservation. It also received the President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award from President Barack Obama in 2016 for providing more than 3,400 hours of public service.
The VDE is an all-volunteer organization, and all of the performance fees are donated to historical preservation and education projects.
P.E.O. chapter awards grant
P.E.O. Chapter BM of Palmyra awarded Jocelyn Shaffer a $5,000 Program for Continuing Education (PCE) grant to complete an associate degree in nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. The PCE grant is awarded to a woman who has decided to further her education after an interruption of at least 24 months.
Shaffer is currently the activities director at Cornwall Manor Retirement Community, where she oversees five full-time and two part-time
employees. She lives in Elizabethtown and has served the retired population in various capacities for 14 years. She currently holds a Bachelor of Science in recreation from Brigham Young University but has decided she could serve the retired population better as a registered nurse.
P.E.O. - Philanthropic Educational Organization - focuses on the advancement of women through scholarships, grants, awards, and loans, and seeks to motivate women to achieve their highest potential. In the
40 years of its existence, Palmyra P.E.O. Chapter BM has secured financial assistance totaling over $500,000 for more than 70 women in Lebanon, Dauphin, and Lancaster counties.
In addition to the PCE grant, P.E.O. Project awards range from $2,500 to $20,000 for educational programs from professional certifications to doctoral degrees. For more information about the financial aid available, visit www.peointernational.org/ projects.
DeMolay members attend Key Man Conference
Stair climb will honor fallen first responders
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDLancaster County’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up, and registration will also be available online at www.lancasterstairclimb.org until Friday, Sept. 15.
Firefighters already have a bond with each other, but the memorial makes that stronger.”
Nine members of Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, attended the Pennsylvania DeMolay Key Man Conference, held July 30 to Aug. 5 at the Masonic Conference Center Patton Campus in Elizabethtown. The weeklong DeMolay leadership training conference was attended by more than 70 DeMolay members from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. The conference offered attendees the opportunity to learn leadership skills and to set personal goals that may prepare them for future service to the organization as well as life in general.
Past Master Councilor Kenton Green, state senior councilor for Pennsylvania DeMolay and a resident of Quarryville, attended in the Jurisdictional Officer Track and worked with 12 other state officers on projects that included jurisdictional event planning, public speaking, mentoring younger members and assisting advisers in the supervision of several activities at the conference. Also attending were Sanskar Dhakal, Saraal Dhakal, Brixton Hevener, Rewan Neopaney, Ronit Neopaney, and Bradyn Nolt, all
Strength training for seniors
A balanced diet and exercise, which includes a combination of aerobic activities and strength training, is necessary to maintain long-term health.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to protect their overall health. Exercise helps to delay or prevent many of the conditions that come with age. Adults age 65 and older should aim for the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking, and at least two days of activities that strengthen muscles. When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors can follow a few safety guidelines.
- Speak with a health care provider first. Before begin-
ning an exercise regimen, people should have a discussion with their general practitioner about their fitness goals. The doctor can recommend strategies that are safe and point out any exercises that may compromise the patient’s overall health.
- Master basic exercises
first. Anyone new to strength training, which is sometimes known as resistance training, can start out slowly, even just using body weight to provide resistance. Resistance exercises can include squats, crunches, modified pushups, planks, and lunges.
- Advance to resistance bands. When a person is ready to move on to something else, he or she may consider resistance bands as an alternative

Local DeMolay advisers who served on the staff of the 2023 Pennsylvania DeMolay Key Man Conference included adviser Daniel Bryan of Middletown and treasurer Dave Berry. A volunteer staff of nearly 35 DeMolay advisers is required to supervise the weeklong conference.
Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, is a fraternal organization for young men ages 12 to 21. The Order of DeMolay seeks to teach the principles of good citizenship, fraternalism, and leadership through activities such as public speaking, athletics, social functions, travel, and civic service projects. The Elizabethtown Chapter is sponsored by Abraham C. Treichler Lodge 682 Free and Accepted Masons, Goodwin Council 19 Royal and Select Master Masons, and Lancaster Commandery 13 Knights Templar. For more information about Elizabethtown DeMolay, contact chapter adviser Jesse Spence at 717-209-0843 or steel99deer@comcast.net.
Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the stadium. They will circle the stadium five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. During the climb, each participant will carry an image or the badge of a first responder who was killed while responding to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Every year, many first responders travel to the Barnstormers’ stadium to participate in the event. Firefighters often choose to don their full set of equipment for the climb, carrying the same type of heavy gear that their fallen comrades did as they rescued those trapped in the twin towers. In the past, the event has drawn first responders from across the entire county, as well as firefighters and emergency personnel from New York, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey. “We have guys from outside of the state who only see each other at the stair climb every year. It’s a common bond for people,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “They swap stories and catch up.
Similar memorial events are held throughout the country in almost every state, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the Lancaster event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who helped with rescue efforts continue to receive counseling over two decades after the attacks.
Yuill helped to establish the annual stair climb in Lancaster
13 years ago as a way to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Pucca. Yuill and Pucca met at a training program in New York, and Pucca was one of the city’s fire marshals who was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. Members of the community, especially first responders, immediately rallied in support of the memorial.
“The memorial gives people a unique way to show that they haven’t forgotten, like everyone promised in the days after 9/11,” Yuill said. “Even the younger generations participate, despite being babies when it happened. They know that it’s about honor and sacrifice, and they honor that.”
Civil War Roundable to meet
The Hershey Civil War Roundtable will meet on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 542, 8000 Derry St., Harrisburg. The meeting will also be livestreamed via Zoom.
Speaker Pete Miele will present the program, “19th-Century Medicine Through a Surgeon’s Eyes.” Miele will talk about William Williams Keen, who was a young medical student at
Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia when the Civil War erupted. He was thrown into treating suffering soldiers at the First Battle of Bull Run. Four years later, he emerged from the crucible of war as a pioneer in treating injuries of the nervous system.

Horst- Work with a trainer. Working with a certified personal trainer can help a person learn how to use free weights and strength-training machines correctly. A trainer also can create a routine that includes the right number of sets and repetitions to gradually build and maintain muscle mass. If someone decides against hiring a trainer, gym staff members may guide them on using equipment and demonstrate proper form.

- Build up gradually. A person’s first strength training session should only last 10 to 15 minutes, according to Tiffany Chag, a strength coach at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. This time limit enables the person to gauge soreness. Anyone new to strength training should wait until soreness abates before beginning the next session.
Exercises that build strength are a vital part of maintaining health as a senior. These exercises help maintain muscle mass and also improve balance and bone health.
