Youngsters who live in impoverished countries will receive shoeboxes full of gifts this Christmas season thanks to the efforts of students living a world away. Members of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary School (SSBVM) in Middletown are currently collecting items for the Boxes of Joy program, which is administered by Cross Catholic Outreach. Each shoebox contains gifts, such as toys, clothing, school supplies and hygiene items. The monthlong collection started at the end of September at SSBVM and will conclude on Wednesday, Oct. 25. “Last year, we collected 50 boxes, so that is our goal again this year,” said NJHS adviser Josh Koch. “Once we receive all of the donations, we will pack up the boxes and see how many we actually have. The NJHS members will stay after school to package them.” Koch noted that the students collaborated with the Council of Catholic Women at the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church to complete the project. “We are joining them and supporting them in this ministry,” he said. “We want to help support the parish as much as they support (the school).” SSBVM students have been asked to bring in a variety of items to fill the boxes. “We sent out a letter to the parents and asked that each grade bring in specific items,” said Koch. “For

Check out the Amazing Maze BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When you’re out trick-ortreating on Halloween, or if you’re looking for an alternative activity, visit the Amazing Maze at the Park Street Chapel. The free box maze will be open to kids to explore from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the chapel, located at Park and Spruce streets, Elizabethtown. Peter Ogilvie has been creating the maze for more than 10 years. He saw an example at a church years ago, and he decided to build his own. “My kids were very active and rambunctious when they were growing up,” he said, of his now-grown five children. People wait to enter the Amazing Maze in Elizabethtown. “I was a youth leader at the time, and I thought, ‘Let’s it. He’s put towers. There good at making it very hard, does not hold church services, make a box maze,’ and I put have been years where he’s but then, if it’s too hard, kids but hosts open prayer every one up in our church, and the said, ‘I don’t know if I can do get stuck in it and they cry, morning from 6 to 7 a.m. kids loved it.” this again, because I’m so and you don’t want that, of Peter, who is a hospice chaplain, Over the years, he’s become tired,’ but then he’s ready to course.” serves as chaplain of the chapel an expert in assembling the go again.” The maze is not scary as as well. maze, which is created out of It takes Peter about a week much as it’s adventurous, The Amazing Maze offers a boxes donated by Turkey Hill to construct the maze, which is said Sharon, who noted that way to bring people into the Dairy. located on the upper floor of the room is dark and only lit chapel and for the Ogilvies to “They donate about 100 the chapel. He said he doesn’t by strobe and blue lights.
