Mobile Ag Lab program celebrates 20 years ower Dauphin School District’s Londonderry Elementary School recently hosted a 20th birthday celebration for the Mobile Agriculture Education Science Lab program hosted by the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation. The Mobile Ag Lab had just visited Lower Dauphin’s five elementary schools, providing students with hands-on experiences as they learned about the importance of agriculture. “This is an important tool that we can provide to our youth,” said Morgan Sheffield, grants manager for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. “The department is a proud supporter of increasing student knowledge about agriculture and its importance in students’ lives.” The state secretary for the FFA, Rebecca Lehman, agreed, saying, “ We’re planting the seeds with these young students to learn about the importance of agriculture in Pennsylvania and hopefully continue that tradition.” The Mobile Agriculture Education
L
Science Lab is a 40-foot mobile classroom that travels across Pennsylvania bringing an interactive field trip-style experience directly to schools and students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The Mobile Ag Lab is equipped with over 30 STEM-based science experiments and lessons, a certified teacher, and all the supplies needed for a hands-on learning experience. Each science experiment is designed to emphasize a different aspect of agriculture, including Pennsylvania’s commodities, the environment, biotechnology, food, and fiber. While in the lab, students work cooperatively to solve a problem as they form a hypothesis, collect data and draw conclusions while focusing on the Scientific Method. Each lesson at the Mobile Ag Lab focuses on increasing students’ knowledge of the importance of agriculture and its impact on people’s daily lives. Dignitaries and Londonderry Elementary School students were in attendance at the celebration.

Program to focus on President Lincoln The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, Dec. 8, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Summerdale. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. Anyone who wishes to attend the lecture only should arrive by 7 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom. James Hayney, a Camp Hill resident and professional actor who has spent much of the last two decades portraying President Abraham Lincoln, will speak on “Lincoln’s Love of Pennsylvania.”

He will draw on his many years of Lincoln scholarship to answer questions from the audience at the end of his presentation, and he will pose for individual and group holiday photos with attendees. Dauphin County judiciary warns of scam
RISSER-MARVEL FARM MARKET ½ Mile East of Campbelltown on Rt. 322
townlively.com
A scam in which a call-taker is told he or she missed jury duty has been attempted several times in Dauphin County in recent days. Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas President Judge John F. Cherry said concerned residents have contacted the court system to report receiving troubling calls. In the calls, a scammer claims the
call-taker failed to appear for jury duty and needs to pay a fine immediately. In at least one call, the scammer used a real judge’s name and claimed the judge was prepared to issue a warrant if the call-taker didn’t pay $2,000. The scammer, who answered a return call, further claimed to be a detective with an unnamed agency.
While the juror scam has been perpetrated for almost 20 years, its frequency is believed to ebb and flow. It is a crime for anyone to falsely represent himself or herself as a law enforcement or court official. Cherry explained that failing to report for jury duty results in a phone call and, if the call is unanswered, sheriff’s deputies,
carrying identification and badges, visit the citizen’s home. People receiving a call about missing jury duty should never give sensitive information over the phone. Those with concerns should call their local police department or the Pennsylvania Attorney General Bureau of Consumer Protection at 800-441-2555.

The Harrisburg Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) presented Barbara Barksdale with the NSDAR Historic Preservation Medal and Certificate on Oct. 12. The award recognizes and honors a person who “has done extraordinary volunteer work over a long period of time in establishing a historic district, preserving a local landmark, restoring or preserving objects of historic cultural significance or establishing or participating in oral history projects, youth leadership and education as it pertains to historic preservation, at the regional, state and/or national level.” Fewer than 30 of these awards are presented each year throughout the United States. Barksdale is a historian, as well as the founder and president of the Friends of Historic Midland Cemetery and founding member and current chair of Pennsylvania Hallowed Ground (PAHG). PAHG aids caretakers, historians, students and all who care for and restore African American cemeteries and supports
conservation, documentation, education and training. Barksdale has spent decades restoring Midland Cemetery in Steelton, where African American veterans from the Buffalo Soldiers, U.S. Colored Troops, Montford Point Marines and World War I and World War II are buried. It is also the final resting place for enslaved people and citizens who formed churches and served as civic leaders and steel workers. Founded in 1795, Midland had succumbed to neglect. The property had in fact been condemned and slated for development. However, thanks in large part to Barksdale, whose work began with a family flower-laying tradition on Memorial Day, it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The NSDAR was founded in 1890 with the mission of promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. The Harrisburg Chapter, founded in 1894, continues at the local level to preserve the legacies of the Founding Fathers and the patriots who fought for the independence of the United

ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. The proposed solution should also consider additional costs to restore the affected community. Regional Innovations Challenge winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT secretary and a panel of judges, who will determine the statewide winner. Warning signs that brakes are faltering Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize. Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of
fading brake systems tend to be more subtle. Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a high-pitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist. Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels
are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately. Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop. This behavior indicates that one side of the brakes is malfunctioning while the other is working properly. Like other issues with brakes, this one requires immediate attention from a professional. Issues with brakes can be
costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.
