Plot to Watch 201 Agatha Christie Movies Without Murdering the Director, Screenwriter, Cast, or Her Husband,” published in April 2023. The 430-page, coffee table book shares Peschel’s thoughts on the 201 movies and television episodes that between them feature all 13 actors who have played Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot and the seven actresses who have played Miss Marple. Peschel said it took her more than two years to watch and review all the movies and TV shows. “I used to be a purist about adaptations,” she noted.

Age-based guidelines for buying toys and gifts The holiday season involves making holiday gift lists and checking them twice, or even more frequently to ensure that gift-givers find the best fit for recipients. While age may only be a number in certain instances, when it comes to gifting, age should be a consideration - particularly when kids are involved. Thousands of children are treated for toy-related injuries each year. Toys that are small or have small pieces can
be choking hazards when given to children who are too young to use them safely. In addition, falls, eye injuries, drowning, and motor accidents are leading causes of gift-related injuries. Toy-related injuries are preventable, and prevention often comes down to choosing age-appropriate toys for kids. Adults buying toys for children should read the packaging carefully. Most toys and other children’s products come with an age
We are thankful for those who have placed their trust in us throughout the year and grateful for a team who goes above and beyond each day in service to our residents. Spang Crest, celebrating a spirit of togetherness this season, wishes you a very Merry Christmas.

Author from pg 1 “But scriptwriters can create a compelling movie from a short story, while a faithful adaptation can be very dull.” During the upcoming presentation, she will talk about the actors and play clips of their performances. When asked about her favorite Poirots and Marples, she answered, “David Suchet and Joan Hickson are the gold standards. But I loved Japanese actor Mansai Nomura. It was fascinating to see Poirot interpreted through the lens of another culture.” The event at Hershey Public Library is free. Reservations at www.hershey

often want the latest gadgets and toys for gifts even if they are not the smartest choice. Adults should resist the urge to buy something just to be a cool parent or grandparent, especially if the item is not age-appropriate. Mermaid tails have become popular in recent years, but they limit movement and can make swimming more difficult, potentially increasing risk of drowning. Safety gear should be provided. As children age, they may be more interested in scooters, bicycles, skates, and other such items. These gifts should be accompanied by helmets, knee pads and eye protection. Adults should consider waiting before gifting certain electronics. Although children may be able to use devices safely, it might be wise to wait to give young children smartphones and tablets due to the consequences of excessive screen time. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry said children ages 2 to 5 should limit non-educational screen time to about one hour per weekday and three hours on weekend days. Children should be encouraged to pursue healthy habits that limit use of screens, so gift-givers can look for gifts that align with this goal. Age-appropriate gifts may help to ensure safety for the youngest people on holiday gift lists.
The East Hanover Lions Club, represented by Lisa Lugovich (right) honored two students for their outstanding leadership and service in their schools this past trimester. Claire Duffy (left), of East Hanover Elementary School in Dauphin County, and Annie Moyer, of Northern Lebanon Elementary School, received a certificate, a monetary award, and a candy bar.

DMVA encourages holiday donations Pennsylvanians looking for a patriotic way to donate during the holiday season are reminded that they can give to programs that support the commonwealth’s more than 700,000 veterans, service members, and their families. These nine tax-deductible programs are managed by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). The Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF) issues grants to statewide charitable organizations that assist veterans, veterans service organizations, and county directors of veterans affairs to help veterans in need of shelter and necessities of living. The VTF also issues temporary assistance grants to individual veterans who have qualifying financial needs. The grants are funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily donate when applying for or renewing their driver’s license or photo identification card and renewing a motor vehicle registration, from proceeds generated by the sale of the Honoring
Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates, and by those who donate online or by mail. The Military Family Relief Assistance Program provides financial assistance in the form of grants to eligible Pennsylvania service members and their eligible family members who have an immediate financial need based on circumstances beyond their control. This program is made possible by donations from taxpayers who designate all or part of their Pennsylvania personal income tax refund to support Pennsylvania military personnel and their families, and by those who donate online or by mail. Resident Welfare Funds at each of the DMVA’s six veterans’ homes help to keep the residents active and healthy by providing activities and entertainment. Donations are made online or through private donations by mail. Residents of the commonwealth may also donate to
the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Lebanon County and maintained by the DMVA, the recently refurbished Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial honors veterans of all eras from the Revolutionary War forward. Donations are accepted online or by mail to help fund the maintenance and repair of the memorial. When an online donation is made, donors may choose to enter honoree information, and a plaque will be displayed on the Virtual Donor Wall. Online plaques will show that donations have been made in honor of, in memory of, or on behalf of someone. Monetary donations to the aforementioned programs can be made by individuals, corporations, and companies. To learn more and make a donation online or for details on how to donate by mail, go to www.donate .dmva.pa.gov.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has added a new affiliate: Keep Dauphin County Beautiful. This affiliate will be a program of and housed in the Dauphin County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling. It will serve areas outside Harrisburg, which has its own affiliate. To complete the affiliation process, the group conducted Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Community Assessment, which is done to gather data about the area served. Data collected included residents’ attitudes about litter and community image, existing litter prevention programs, leaders of community and beautification efforts, existing waste and recycling policies, past and current community revitalization efforts and active volunteer groups. The results of the Community Assessment were used to guide the development of a local plan to change attitudes and behaviors regarding litter, recycling, beautification and related issues. As part of the partnership, the new affiliate has access to a statewide network of peer organiza-

Buffalo wings recipe for the big game Football season heats up each January, when fans of both college football and the professional game look forward to each sport’s respective playoffs. Many people hold game watch parties, which not only provide an opportunity to view the big game, but also offer social time and food. The following recipe for “Grilled Buffalo Wings,” courtesy of cookbook author Katie Lee Biegel and The Food Network, may fit nicely in the game day spread. Grilled Buffalo Wings Yields 6 to 8 servings Ingredients: 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 3 pounds whole chicken wings 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/3 cup hot sauce 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon honey Instructions: 1. In a small bowl, combine
the salt, pepper and garlic powder. In a large bowl, toss the wings with the salt mixture to evenly coat. 2. Preheat a gas grill to medium heat, about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. Place the wings on the grill, crowding them together so they are all touching. This method goes against the conventional wisdom of giving meat room so it does not steam. In this recipe, the meat should steam so it stays moist. Grill, flipping the wings every 5 minutes, for a total of 20 minutes of cooking. 4. In the meantime, heat the butter, hot sauce, vinegar, and honey in a saucepan over low heat and whisk to combine. 5. In a clean, large bowl, toss the wings with the sauce. Turn the heat up on the grill to medium-high. Use tongs to remove the wings from the sauce and put them back on the grill until the skins crisp, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Put the wings back in the bowl with the sauce, toss and serve.
