New Year’s Eve party pointers of beer or malt beverages, have ready-to-go mixed drinks available by selecting a signature drink and preparing a bulk batch. Foods should also be provided in a self-serve f a s h i o n . F i n g e r fo o d s and bite-sized morsels may not require guests to carry plates, reducing the chances for spillage. Sliders, miniature quiches and dessert shooters may be suitable. Hosts should also try to curate a winning playlist. They may ask guests to submit a list of their favorite tunes to help compile a collection of songs that will ebb and flow with the evening’s events. Hosts should include tunes suited to singing along like “Don’t Stop Believin’” or “Tiny Dancer.” T hos e pl a nning parties may choose to offer takeaway gifts for designated drivers. Encourage guests to stay sober and volunteer for designated driving duties by offering prizes. Ideas include gift cards to coffee shops or restaurants. Hosts should also be ready for midnight. They should provide a large television to show the midnight countdown and start pouring champagne roughly 20 minutes before midnight to ensure all glasses are full when the clock strikes 12. New Year’s Eve celebrations get an extra boost when the party is well-planned.

Many people consider New Year’s Day the unofficial end of the holiday season. That often means that New Year’s Eve is an opportunity to socialize, gather and party one final time before returning to the routines of daily life. The first known instance of New Year’s celebrations can be traced to around 2,000 B.C. in the region of Mesopotamia. Celebrants gathered in March, rather than January, as this was the time of the vernal equinox, when the darkness of winter subsided and agricultural life could begin anew. A s individuals count down the days until New Year’s Eve festivities, the following planning tips may make the celebrations occasions to remember. Party planners may consider giving their event a theme. Guests can come dressed as dynamic duos like Mario and Luigi, or the party can evoke a bygone era, such as the Roaring ‘20s. Let guests know what they can do to play the part. Decorations should be tied into the theme as well. Classic New Year’s Eve decorations include balloons, streamers and confetti. Hosts may consider a festive balloon arch or backdrop that also can serve as a place to pose for photo opportunities. In order to avoid guests becoming wiped out by the time midnight arrives, start the party at around 9 or 10 p.m. and anticipate its lasting into the wee hours of the morning. Hosts may also tailor d r i n k s to t h e s e a s o n . They may utilize seasonal ingredients when crafting drinks or serve drinks that are expected at this time of year, such as eggnog that includes alcohol or cranberry Moscow mules. To keep guests having fun at the party, provide various activities. Festivities may include card games or board games, karaoke or a trivia contest. B evera ges should be accessible. Unless the host is hiring a bartender who will be on call to pour drinks, having drinks ready to go is a smart idea. In addition to cans or bottles

Hess wins spelling bee for second year Lower Dauphin Middle School eighth-grader Owen Hess outlasted 19 classmates in a marathon two-hour spelling bee to repeat as school champion on Dec. 1. Owen, the son of Brandon and Julie Hess, went head-to-head with eventual runner-up Melodee Arredondo-Sandoval for eight championship rounds before he won the bee with the word “prosecution.” He had two other opportunities to win earlier but misspelled “stodgy” and “indices” - two words he said he had never heard before the bee. Melodee is the daughter of Bladimir and Diamantina Arredondo and is also an eighth-grader. To reach the championship round, Owen and Melodee first competed in 16 rounds of spelling. The first 13 rounds consisted of words from a study list, which narrowed the field to eight. The pronouncer then switched to a list of unfamiliar words for three additional rounds to narrow the competition further to the

two finalists. Eighth-grader Athena Parelis and sixthgrader Annabelle Mattson tied for third place with Athena winning in a oneround spell-off. In early spring, Owen, Melodee, Athena and Annabelle will take the WITF Written Spelling Bee, which consists of a written test and vocabulary test. The top 37 test-takers will participate in the WITF Grand

SERVPRO announces geographic expansion

SERVPRO employees celebrated the expansion announcement.

As part of an effort to broaden its presence and further serve the community, SERVPRO of Western Lancaster County and East York has recently completed the acquisition of the SERVPRO franchise in Hershey and Harrisburg East, as well as Lebanon County. This expansion marks a significant milestone for the growing franchise, which provides cleaning, restoration and construction services to residential

and commercial customers across its service area. According to Oleg Levin, owner and CEO of SERVPRO of Western Lancaster County and East York, the acquisition aligns with the company’s commitment to strategic market expansion, reinforcing its position as a market leader in the restoration, cleaning and construction industry. He also noted that the acquisition is expected to result in new job opportunities, helping

to foster economic investment in the communities it serves across the region. SERVPRO of Western L ancaster County and East York has long had a deep commitment to community involvement, including offering disaster preparedness education, supporting local charities and participating in community events. Levin said that commitment will only be enhanced through the acquisition.

Rishi Mody (left) and Reed Douglas were recognized for their positive behaviors by Lower Dauphin Communities That Care program director Angela Durantine.

Two students at Conewago Elementary School were recently recognized for their effor ts to be good school citizens and classmates. T he students, thirdgrader Reed Douglas and Rishi Mody, a kindergarten student, were both honored at lunch in front of the entire student body as part of the Do the Right Thing program. Reed was recognized for organizing a group of boys to play with a kindergarten student. Monique Portser, the school staff member who nominated Reed for the award, praised Reed’s kindness, inclusivity and ability to serve as a role model. Rishi was nominated by

kindergarten teacher Karrine Brooks. Rishi noticed that a classmate looked scared in the bus line and told an adult, leading to the discovery that the student was in the wrong line. Reed and Rishi were recognized by the school administration, the police, and the monthly business sponsor, Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, and they were rewarded with a gift card to Target; a Do The Right Thing T-shirt, pencil and cer tif icate; and a Subway coupon. Any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a child for recognition through the Do the Right Thing program. For more information, contact Angela Durantine at angela@ldctc.org.
