GiGi’s Playhouse To Open In Manheim Township By Ann Mead Ash

ORGAN CONCERT

Jessica Kinsey, a board member with GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster, wants families with children who have Down syndrome and other disabilities to know that a support system is available. “I would have loved to have had this once we had our prenatal diagnosis,” said Kinsey. “We want to educate (the community by providing) more information (for families).” A huge step in raising awareness of the positive impact people with Down syndrome and other disabilities can have will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, when GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, will open at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. An open house to celebrate the grand opening will be held from 1 to 3 p.m.

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will host an “Organic Reflections” concert on First Friday, Jan. 3. Larry Hershey will play on the vintage 1958 analog Allen organ. The concert is titled “Winter Lights” and will include works by Bach, Bedard, Durufle, Krebs, Lubeck and Purcell. The concert will conclude with an organ solo transcription of the “Hallelujah” chorus from Handel’s “Messiah.” The concert is part of the First Friday series, a gift to the Lancaster community from First Reformed Church, a center-city congregation of the United Church of Christ. All concerts are 30 minutes in length and begin at 8 p.m. each First Friday. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call 717-397-5149.

Looking forward to the open house and ribbon cutting to be held at the new GiGi’s Playhouse on Oregon Pike are Jen Voshell (far left), holding Jacob, and Jessica Kinsey (far right), holding Nathaniel. The open house will be held on Jan. 11, beginning at 1 p.m. GiGi’s Playhouse in Lancaster will be the first facility of its kind in Pennsylvania serving children and adults with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

Although the open house is a drop-in event, Jen Voshell, who is also a board member, said that specific activities are planned. Self-guided tours of the facility, which includes a large room, two small rooms, a kitchen, and a family room, will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., Nancy Gianni, who founded GiGi’s Playhouse in 2002 and named it for her daughter GiGi, will speak, as will GiGi’s Playhouse president Kim King. “Some of our families will talk about what GiGi’s Lancaster means to them,” said Voshell. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held, and refreshments will be served. Gianni, who founded GiGi’s in Chicago, was inspired to start the program after holding a support group meeting for families of children with Down syndrome in a room made available in a local hospital. “She took it upon herself to create GiGi’s Playhouse,” said Voshell. “She became well known and was able to help other communities open their own playhouses.” GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster is the 47th playhouse to open in the United States. “GiGi’s differs because everything we offer is free to families,” said Kinsey, who listed therapeutic services, such as speech, physical, occupational, and social services among the playhouse’s offerings. “All family members are welcome and encouraged to stay,” she stated, adding, “It’s not therapy just for our individuals with Down syndrome, it’s (a model) for what you can do in-home.” Kinsey also noted that GiGi’s Playhouse is inclusive. “It’s not just for individuals with Down syndrome,” she said. Kinsey noted that support is available for individuals of all ages. “GiGi’s is a lifetime commitment to families. We help from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood,” she explained. “There will be fitness classes,” stated Kinsey. The center hopes to offer young adults and adults a program called GiGi University to provide career training or life skills. The classes encourage education, socialization, and ways to help individuals be more independent. Four types of classes are scheduled for the next several months at GiGi’s. “Classes will consist of LMNOP, which stands for Language, Music, and Our Peeps,” said Voshell, who noted

Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, has announced that it will present its annual Starlight Tea Epiphany Concert twice this year. Concerts will take place on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 5, at 3 p.m. The second concert was added after the church had to turn people away at last year’s concert due to space constraints. Each year, the Chancel Choir, the Carillon Bell Choir, soloists and instrumentalists join to present music of Advent, Christmas and beyond. This year’s performance will include special guest instrumentalists the Lancaster Brass Quintet, percussionist Rich Klimowicz and flutist C. J. Flint. The centerpiece of the program will be a newly composed setting of “Gloria” by renowned American composer Daniel Gawthrop. Also featured will be a new setting of the “Magnificat” by Arlen Clarke, as well as several carols of the season. Brethren composer Shawn Kirchner’s “One Sweet Little Baby” will close the concert. The Carillon Bell Choir will

that the class, which is for children age 3 and under, will focus on developing language and social skills through play. Destination Discovery will be a class for people of all ages that focuses on social skills, physical skills, and school skills, such as colors. Fantastic Friends is a program for individuals age 18 and up. “It’s a time to hang out and build relationships,” said Voshell. GiGi Fit is a young adult exercise and healthy lifestyle class. Christine Hewitt said that GiGi’s grew out of a group called Celebrate Down Syndrome, which had been in existence in Lancaster for many years. The group decided to change the name to GiGi’s Playhouse in 2016. Since that time, the organization has been hosting galas, fundraisers, and get-togethers, such as Pancakes and Pajamas, which is held near the holidays, to raise funds to open the playhouse. Free Film from pg 1 with GOTR, said that the subject of the film is especially pertinent. “We know that technology is a really relevant topic for our girls and our entire community,” said Yohe. “This documentary really digs into the addiction piece of technology. It talks about how we spend a lot of time connected and feeling more disconnected than ever.” GOTR programs combine running with an interactive curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living. Yohe noted that the face-to-face time is important in the current cultural environment. “We get our girls together twice a week for 10 weeks to make real live personal connections,” she said. The curriculum teaches life skills and strategies to help build confidence and character. A 2016 study found that a majority of the girls who completed the program learned to resolve conflict, help others, and manage emotions. To enhance the discussion, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion and the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. The panel will consist of a child psychologist, a Millersville University communications major, a technology expert, a local pediatrician, and a local school administrator. GOTR board members Katie Sandoe and Robin Sarrat will serve as moderators. The presentation will not end with the panel discussion, however. GOTR has partnered with the Lancaster County Community Foundation on the event, and

May Renner of the foundation will close the evening with a visioning exercise. The film trailer features a number of people, many of them young women, talking about their connection to technology. One admits to having an unhealthy relationship with her phone, while another states that her parents say she is addicted to her phone. Evidence that technology usage affects the same parts of the brain that respond when a person falls in love is presented. “The documentary discusses how much of our time we spend connected to a device,” said Yohe, who noted that calls to action for audience members will be part of the discussion. “We would like them to walk away continuing the conversation,” said Yohe, who added that presenters will suggest that those who viewed the film work to limit screen time and pay attention to ways that they disconnect from technology. “We will give them tips on how to scale back technology usage, and we will ask them to start using technology for good (reasons and purposes),” said Yohe. Advice may include turning off notifications or changing a screen to grayscale. There is no charge to attend the event, but those who would like to see the film are asked to register by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for “LIKE” in Lancaster. County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Friday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds

to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of the nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be over for many, but for Manheim brothers Tyler, Eric, and Drew Zimmerman and hundreds of other people across the state, life is about to kick into full speed as they make final preparations for their part in the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The 104th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show is scheduled to take place from Saturday through Saturday, Jan. 4 to 11, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Admission is free; however, there is a parking fee in all Farm Show Complex-operated lots. Among the more than 6,000 animals that will be part of this year’s Farm Show are several lambs, pigs, and rabbits that have been raised and cared for by the Zimmerman brothers at the family’s farmette in rural Manheim. Tyler, 16, and Eric, 15 - now in their sixth and fifth years, respectively, of participating in the statewide competition - will each be entering one lamb and one pig. Ten-year-old Drew will enter a lamb and a pig, along with three rabbits. Transporting all of those animals to the Farm Show Complex in time for their competitions

will take three trips. “It’s going to be an all-nighter,” said the boys’ mother, Tracy Zimmerman, with a laugh. But that driving time, plus all of the unseen effort leading up to it, is more than worth it for Tracy and her husband, Ryan Zimmerman, who hope to develop and instill a lifelong hard work ethic in their sons through projects like this. “It teaches them responsibility,” noted Ryan. “And commitment and followthrough,” added Tracy. Ryan and Tracy met in FFA when they were attending Manheim Central High School (MCHS). Now Tyler and Eric are involved in FFA at MCHS, and all three boys participate in 4-H. The brothers wake up early every morning to feed and tend to their animals and return in the evening to make sure each animal has fresh water and food. Eric explained that exercising the animals is another important part of the routine to build muscle and to prepare for the main event. “That way they aren’t as anxious in the show,” noted Eric. In addition to being judged for livestock show class awards at the Farm Show, each contestant is judged on showmanship. Eric, Tyler, and Drew spend hours guiding the animals at home to ensure the animals are ready for the show ring. They practice in

The Master Watershed Steward (MWS) program is a collaborative effort between Penn State Extension; the Conservation Districts of Lebanon, Lancaster, and Dauphin counties; and local conservation groups. It is similar to the Master Gardener program and is designed to train people in a formal way about the basics of water resource stewardship, creating an energized and educated group of citizens. Currently, the MWS program operates in 18 counties across the state and has 302 volunteers. Penn State Extension is recruiting 20 to 25 interested people for the Class of 2020,

which will be a joint program between Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The class will consist of 40 hours of training on various topics, including water quality, stream health, groundwater, native plants, and recreational resources. Once this part of the training is complete, trainees will perform 50 hours of volunteer service on selected projects such as organizing and executing stream cleanups, designing and installing demonstration rain gardens, assisting in stream restorations, and organizing educational workshops addressing topics such as rain barrels, pol-

lution prevention, invasive plant control, and storm water management. Applicants from all backgrounds are welcome. Individuals under age 18 must be accompanied by a guardian or adult. The program will start on Tuesday, March 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and will continue every Tuesday through May. There will be several Saturday field trips as well. Informational sessions will be held in January, and all sessions will begin at 7 p.m. Sessions will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Lebanon County Extension Office, 2120 Cornwall Road, Lebanon; on Tuesday, Jan. 14,

at Dauphin County Extension Office, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin; and on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Lancaster County Extension Office, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The BB&T Leadership Institute provides organizations with a leadership development partner who seeks to help create dynamic and effective leaders, increase employee retention and improve the bottom line.

LCCTF Awards Faculty Grants For the past several years, the Lancaster County Career and Technology Foundation (LCCTF) has invested in curriculum enhancements, equipment and technology to support the innovation and state-of-the-art needs of the faculty of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). vation Grants to faculty at the LCCTC. Grant recipients are Rachel Sprecher, Erin McFalls, Deb Dilworth, Kyle Young, Leslie Schlosser, Alan Jones, Wendy Bertoli, Jessie Masquelier, Tammy Kramer and Thomas Wilson. YWCA Lancaster intends that participants leave the Racial Equity Institute experience equipped with a better understanding of the separate work, experiences, and responsibilities of people of color and white people. Workshop enrollees are introduced to a fundamental anti-racist, multicultural model that can lead to a tangible plan of action for themselves and/or their team. Workshop participants learn through multiple modalities, including journaling, workbooks, exercises, and toolkits. These tools can be used to study, question, and better understand the history, context, and impact of racism on individuals and society. For more details, readers may contact David Nice, project manager, social justice, at dnice@ywcalancaster.org. There is a fee per participant. United Way of Lancaster County’s board of directors has named Kevin M. Ressler as its next president and CEO, effective Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020. Ressler, currently the executive director of Meals on Wheels of Lancaster, will replace Sue Suter, who is retiring after five years of leading United Way of Lancaster County. In his five years leading Meals on Wheels, Ressler led a team to build upon nearly 50 years of established practice, expanding service offerings and improving the quality and consistency of service. Under his leadership, Meals on Wheels expanded its mission’s focus to concentrate on impact rather than output numbers while increasing volunteer and donor support. The organization also consolidated and merged other Meals on Wheels programs to streamline workflow and ensure longevity and sustainability. This year, the organization has served more than 1,000 community members with 180,000-plus meals by coordinating more than 40,000 volunteer hours with an average of 375 monthly volunteers. TriStarr Staffing assisted the nine-member search committee in its national search, which included nearly 100 candidates from all areas of the country. Ressler has a Bachelor of Arts

Auditions Set For Upcoming Productions Auditions for two Promise Players productions are scheduled at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Jan. 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. The group’s spring musical comedy, “Smoke on the Mountain,” written by Connie Ray and Alan Bailey, will be performed on Friday to Sunday, March 20 to 22, and Thursday to Sunday, March 26 to 29, and the whodunit play “The Case of the Duplicate Date Nut Loaf,” by Tom and Celesta Letchworth, will be presented on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16. Roles in “Smoke on the Mountain” are for four men and three women age 18 and up. Preference is for actors and actresses who can sing and play an instrument, but this is not required. Set in the 1930s, this musical tale introduces the members of the singing Sanders family, who, after a fiveyear hiatus, perform their traditional and bluegrass gospel songs at a Saturday Night Gospel Sing, where their individual stories and beliefs are shared.

Roles for “The Case of the Duplicate Date Nut Loaf” are for two men, four women, and one flex. In the play, inspector Casey Solved is called to a local church’s bake sale, where a second date nut loaf - in addition to the famous one provided by Lillian “Lil” O’Laydee using her family’s secret recipe - has shown up. All will be asked to read from a provided script. Those auditioning for the musical should be prepared to sing a one-minute song section of their choice, for which they should bring their own accompanist, or be prepared to sing the first verse of “Amazing Grace.” Those who can play instruments are asked to be prepared to play a one-minute piece of their choice. For more information or to make an auditioning appointment, readers may contact director Doreen Creighton at dcreightn57@gmail.com. Promise Players is a community Christian theater group that performs in support of a local ministry.

Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be onsite at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at locations across the state. These in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling and serving the food, as well as properly sanitizing food service facilities. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a 75% or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years. Penn State Extension will hold two ServSafe Food Safety Manager courses in January at the Lancaster Extension in the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. An evening course will be held on Thursdays, Jan. 9 and 16, from 5 to 9 p.m. The certification exam will be administered on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. Registration is required for the evening course by Thursday, Jan. 2. A daytime course will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 9 to 11 a.m. The certification exam will be administered on Jan. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration for the daytime course is required by Wednesday, Jan. 15. Registration may be completed by visiting https://extension .psu.edu/servsafe or by calling

877-345-0691. The course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the “ServSafe Manager” book, the exam, the answer sheet, and the learning materials. For further information about the course, readers may contact Stacy Reed at 717394-6851.
