Manyfire hazards remain dangerous year-round, but the winter season brings specific safety concerns and challenges for fire companies. As we attempt to keep our houses warm and well-lit during the frigid and darker winter months, several preventative and basic safety measures should be kept in mind to help reduce the risk of catastrophes occurring.
Of all the fire hazards that accompany the arrival of colder weather, space heaters are one of the most common fire starters and should be placed at a safe distance from any flammable items, such as beds, curtains and Christmas trees. Other methods of heating one’s home should also be utilized with care; when using a fireplace, only use natural wood. Plywood, treated wood and accelerants such as alcohol or gasoline should be kept out
of the fireplace. In fact, putting anything other than the right wood into a fireplace could be dangerous.
Decorations such as stockings and Christmas trees should be kept away from the fireplace, and Christmas trees that are not regularly watered will become dry and turn into a hazard.
Stoves and ovens can also prove hazardous if left unattended. “The biggest thing is making sure that you turn things off when you don’t need them,” said Rob “Stretch” Williams of New Providence, a member of the Refton Community Fire Company. “If something happens while you’re in bed, you won’t know until it’s too late. Most fires start between 12 and 4 a.m.”
A large factor in avoiding fires is preventative care. Local fire companies recommend that those with chimneys have them cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Uninspected chimneys may develop cracks that allow the fire to spread into
other parts of the house through the walls. Furnaces should also be serviced regularly through a heating company to prevent malfunctions.
Another common fire hazard during the winter is overloaded circuits. Making sure that lights are turned off at night and that Christmas lights are not perpetually lit can make a residence much safer.
In addition to fire hazards, driving conditions play a large role in wintertime woes. Although modern cars are equipped with more safety measures than ever before, driving on icy or snow-laden roads can be dangerous if drivers do not exert caution. “We don’t get the crashes like we used to, but you still want to make sure you’re being careful when driving in the winter.” said Williams.
W hether you’re baking, enjoying holiday decorations, or driving to work this winter, keeping in mind some tips from your local firefighter can make your holiday season, and theirs, much safer.
What Is Wildlife Doing In
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Whether you live in a rural part of the Southern End or on a city block in Lancaster, many of your neighbors consist of local wildlife; if you live on a farm in Holtwood or Ronks, you’re no stranger to the occasional herd of deer wandering through your land, and local foxes are notorious for making themselves at home in
garages and sheds in Lancaster city and the surrounding suburbs. While your human neighbors might drop off a plate of cookies or hot chocolate this time of year, your furry friends exhibit much different traditions, and being able to recognize them makes the winter months safer for both parties.
Every year, Lisa Sanchez, a park naturalist with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visits different parts of the county to help the public understand animals’ behavior during the winter. Sanchez explains what different types of animals are prone to doing in response to the cold weather and clears up misconceptions about behaviors such as hibernation. “If you’re someone who wants to feed the birds, it helps to realize what else might be eating at the feeder,” said Sanchez. “It’s always good to have awareness.”

The modern world has evolved through the widespread use of new technology in a variety of ways; during the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and businesses heavily relied on technology to safely continue operating. Although the world is no longer in a state of emergency lockdown, organizations such as Junior Achievement of Southcentral Pennsylvania (JASCPA) have found that procedures adopted during the pandemic continue to prove themselves useful. Winter Animals
Animals in Lancaster County are divided into three categories: those that remain active during the winter, those that migrate to a warmer climate, and those that hibernate. For those that remain active in the winter, such as foxes, raccoons, deer and various birds, Sanchez will explain how they find their food and where they are prone to making shelter. “I’ve had people realize during a program what has been living in their yard,” said Sanchez. “Even if you’re on a hike, it’s good to be able to identify certain signs to know what’s in the vicinity.” Sanchez often brings pelts, furs and animal skulls for people to familiarize themselves with and better identify them in the wild. Groundhogs, bats, jumping mice, reptiles and amphibians are Lancaster County’s hibernators. Although reptiles and
amphibians in other parts of the country don’t hibernate, cold-blooded creatures in Pennsylvania must remain underground for the duration of the cold season to keep from freezing. A common misconception that Sanchez often clears up about hibernation is the patterns of bears; while bears exhibit some of the same behaviors as hibernators, such as fattening up and resting, they are often active on warms days and many female bears are awake to give birth to their young. Sanchez also warns people to stay clear of caves to avoid disturbing bats, which can’t afford to expend any energy until their food sources return in the spring.
For more information about programs offered by park naturalists such as Sanchez, call the environmental education office at 717-295-2055.
Crop And Craft Will Encourage Creativity
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
You’re invited to get creative during a two-day event at Donegal High School. Crop and Craft will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, in the high school cafeteria, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The event is an opportunity for crafters to work on their projects in a fun, relaxing environment, said Susan Heydt, who is organizing the event. Proceeds from the Crop and Craft will benefit scholarships to attend Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competitions and Kiwanis Key Leader Camp.
“Scrapbookers, artists, fiber artists and crafters are invited to join in the fun of this time of camaraderie with others sharing similar hobbies,” stated Heydt, who is the Key Club adviser at the high school. “There is plenty of space to spread out, and we have people who use the tables to lay out big fiber pieces they’re working on.”
Participants will be able to work on anything they bring with them, and members of Donegal’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) will host breakout sessions throughout the event, featuring demonstrations on a variety of art mediums.
“The breakout sessions are a good opportunity to learn about something maybe you haven’t seen or heard of before,” said senior Isabelle Morrison, president of the NAHS, who will run one of the sessions.
Senior Madison Arroyo, president of Donegal’s Key Club, noted that students will help participants carry in supplies and get set up. She said she was surprised at how quiet the event was last time she attended. “Everyone is so focused on their projects,” she noted. “It’s just a relaxed, welcoming environment.”
Members of FBLA are taking care of marketing the event, said freshman Abbie Waldron, club treasurer. “We’re handling the advertising, and we made the registration form and we’re tracking registration payments,” she stated. FBLA members participate in competitions throughout the year, which will be funded using proceeds from the Crop and Craft. Freshman Sami Ankeny will compete in financial math in an upcoming event, and freshman Molly O’Brien will participate in a hospitality management competition later this month.
Heydt got the idea for Crop and Craft after hearing about a similar event organized annually by a sorority at Millersville University. Crop and Craft events were held in 2019 and 2020, and this year will mark the event’s return after a two-year absence during the pandemic.
Pizza and salad will be served Friday night, and coffee will be available Saturday morning, along with soup and sandwiches for lunch. “The soups are awesome,” Heydt said, noting that parents make and donate them, with additional food provided by local businesses.
Registration for Crop and Craft is available at https://tinyurl.com/y43e52rr. Participants may pay at the door if room is available, but Heydt recommends preregistration. In the event of snow, the Crop and Craft will be postponed to Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4.
Lancaster COB Sets Epiphany Concert
The Chancel Choir and Carillon Bell Choir of the Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB) will wrap up the Christmas season with two performances of the annual Starlight Tea Epiphany Concert. Performances have been set for Saturday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 8, at 3 p.m. Tea and cookies will be served after the Saturday program.
The concert will include a range of familiar and new carols, as well as a performance of John Rutter’s “Gloria.” The centerpiece of the concert, Rutter’s work is written in three movements for choir, organ, soli voices, brass, and percussion. The Chancel Choir, directed by Matthew Fritz and accompanied by organist Margaret Marsch, will be joined by a
brass orchestra to perform this 15-minute masterpiece. The Carillon Bell Choir will open and close the concert, which also will include organ selections from Marsch.
Lancaster COB is located at 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. For more information, contact planning committee chair Giny Mackey at 717-201-8450.

Donegal students representing the National Art Honor Society, Key Club and Future Business Leaders of America plan for Crop and Craft with teacher Susan Heydt (far right).
In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It
looks like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”
Students participating in JA Inspire are provided with a virtual backpack that allows them to save videos, documents and any information provided by a booth that they want to keep for future reference. Students can log back into the fair at any time to review materials or visit more booths, and they can email
specific questions to company representatives.
Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having inperson career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and allows students to see more companies in a
shorter amount of time.”
JA Inspire is provided to schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the career fair can contact their local PA CareerLink agency for more information.
JA Inspire will return this year and will be open from Wednesday, March 1, to Friday, June 30. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com /jainspirefair.
Children are invited to join in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s virtual programs scheduled in January. Both programs will run from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and are designed for children in kindergarten through grade six.
Virtual Workin’ on the Railroad will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Participants will experience railroad objects live with museum staff members. Using artifacts, interactive activities, and photographs, kids will learn about the jobs of the conductor, station agent, and engineer. There will be time for questions at the end of the program.
Virtual Train Tour: The GP30 will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Children will investigate the inside of the historic GP30 locomotive No. 2233. Guided by a museum educator, participants will visit the cab, where the workers control the train, and explore some
behind-the-scenes places like the catwalk and maintenance areas. There will be time for questions at the end of the program.
Registration for these
programs is available at www.eventbrite.com, and admission is by donation. To learn more, visit www.rr museumpa.org or call 717687-8628.
