SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Connecting Christ, Community And Music BY CATHY MOLITORIS
une your radio dial to FM 90.3, and you’ll connect with a community. That’s where you’ll find WJTL, a contemporary Christian station that’s been bringing “Christ, community and music” to listeners since the 1980s. “We want to be a touchstone for the community,” said Fred McNaughton, president and CEO. “ We want to offer wholesome, family-oriented music and events that can impact people’s lives.” WJTL is located at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, a spacious, state-of-the-art facility with room for community events and concerts, but the station had humble beginnings. “We started in 1984, in a chicken house across from Lancaster Bible College,” McNaughton recalled, noting that challenges in the early days included running wiring along beams covered in petrified chicken poop and dodging low-hanging rafters while working. The station was owned then
T
by Joy Broadcasting, a company that operated stations across the country. “They named their stations for their locations, so ‘JTL’ was ‘Joy to Lancaster,’” McNaughton said. When Joy Broadcasting wanted to sell the station in 1990, Tim Landis, who founded the nonprofit Creative Ministries, mounted a campaign to save the station. Creative Ministries purchased WJTL in 1991 and continues to operate it today. After a stint in a building behind Friendly’s on Oregon Pike in Lancaster, WJTL moved to its current location in 2011. No matter where it called home, however, WJTL has remained singularly focused on its mission. “We are totally funded by our listeners. When people are touched by what we impart and what we do here, they support us, so it’s really a true partnership,” McNaughton stated. “Our listeners are the ones programming the station.” While the core of WJTL is contemporary Christian music, the station also offers a variety of specialty programming. FFM Receives Servants Inc. Comes To Lancaster Christmas Blessing Around 2000, Trent Davis, Faith Friendship Ministries (FFM), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, recently received a Christmas blessing in the form of a donation of 35 new beds - both mattresses and foundations - for some of its residents. The donation came from Todd and Gregg Lehman, owners of Interiors Home, in partnership with Serta/Simmons, and the beds have a total value of $17,500. Interiors Home has been a supporter of FFM for many years.
founder and CEO of Servants Inc., took a mission trip to Guatemala. The trip changed the direction of his life. “(Trent) felt a call to continue relationships and give others opportunity to have that experience,” said Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants. Cotton noted that Davis coordinated mission trips and worked with missionaries in Guatemala under a program he called SARF (Serving At Risk Families), which also included home repair and construction work.

Servants Inc. from pg 1 “ We are a yearround model,” he noted, adding a fulltime project manager was scheduled to begin working for the ministry in Lancaster County in January 2021, with Thursdays and Saturdays slated to be the primary workdays. Cotton noted that the organization is looking for local volunteers. Skills like roofing, plumbing, and carpentry are bonuses but not required. “We put an emphasis on building relationships,” Cotton explained. “You don’t have to be a professional carpenter to sit down and have a conversation. Anybody can serve.” Servants Inc. is already serving in most Lancaster County School districts where its services would not be duplicated. The organization is actively at work in Columbia as well as New Hol-
the studio to share their mission with listeners. In addition to running WJTL, McNaughton is a morning DJ on the station. “I get up at 3 a.m. to come to work, and I still get up every day excited to be on the radio,” he said. His passion for Christian music began as a youth when he started buying 99-cent records at the Christian Light bookstore in Elizabethtown. “This music and these musicians were speaking a language I identified with, and it was a style of
music that showed me the kind of life I wanted to live,” he said. That’s what he hopes WJTL continues to do every day for its listeners. “Radio is there for people. It’s such a personal medium, and it’s about relationships and connection with people,” he commented. “So many listeners tell us they feel that a song was played just for them. They have a personal connection to what’s on the air.” For more information on WJTL, visit https://wjtl.com.

explained Cotton, adding that Lebanon, Dauphin, and Cumberland are in line to get offices next. One of the initial connections Servants Inc. made was with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “In 2021, we completed five projects in New Holland with CrossNet,” said Cotton. Meredith Dahl, executive director at CrossNet, said the organization is grateful to partner with Servants Inc. “Recently, a handicappedaccessible porch was placed on the home of a family in our community,” she said. “The family shared with us … that they observed what it means to show love and care every time they interacted with the (Servants) staff. We are grateful for this partnership and opportunity to meet needs and show God’s love in ELANCO.” “Servants is unique because a lot of ministries do the camp model,” said Cotton.

Fast forward to 2005, when Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. “(Trent) responded with the same base of volunteers, and that’s how the disaster recovery branch started,” said Cotton, who noted that flooding in York County in 2010 really brought home the idea of working locally. “There are home repair needs here, and we have these skills,” said Cotton. “(Trent thought), ‘Let’s start working more regularly here in the community.’” Home Helps began serving in York in 2007. From York, the leap to Lancaster County was natural. Davis now works out of The Candy Factory building in downtown Lancaster several days a week. According to Cotton, the executive team had a vision of expanding into a number of counties, with Lancaster being the first. “Right now we are in York, Lancaster, and Adams,”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL Hempfield came into Tuesday night’s Lancaster-Lebanon League boys’ basketball game unbeaten with an 8-0 record. In a tight battle through regulation, the Black Knights and the host Elizabethtown Bears matched each other until the Bears took charge in overtime for a 43-38 victory. The point-for-point description could properly describe this game. The Bears took a 20-19 lead at halftime only to have the Knights inch ahead 28-27 after the third quarter. After the fourth quarter, it was all tied up at 36-36. The player the Knights were unable to stop was Etown’s Matthew Gihool, who scored a game-leading 28 points - yes, 65 percent of his team’s points total. Ben Troyer and Cole Overbaugh each tallied 10 points for the Knights. Michael Hester’s nine-point total included one of the Hempfield three-pointers - the other coming off a Miguel Pena long-range shot. The Knights were coming off a 60-51 victory at home on December 28. In a non-league game with Central York,

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Also getting off to an undefeated start was the girls’ basketball team, winning its first seven contests. The win that raised the Black Knights’ record to 7-0 was an L-L League victory at home over Elizabethtown on Wednesday, January 5. Hempfield forged ahead to a comfortable halftime lead, 27-13. The Knights held off the Bears in a 54-36 victory. Pacing the team in scoring was sophomore Sophia Ott with a 24-point night. “Sophia had a great game, but it wasn’t all in points,” said Knights head coach Kendra Merrifield. “She did all of the ‘blue collar’ work as well - grab-

bing a ton of boards offensively and defensively. She was on the floor for loose balls. “These were all things we knew she was capable of,” continued the coach. “This was a breakout game for her.” Ava Baer came through with 12 points while Lauren Moffatt scored 10 for the Knights. “Ava is a senior and has grown tremendously even since last year,” said Merrifield. “She worked hard in the off-season. “She maintains an even keeled personality,” the coach said of Baer’s on-court approach. “If something goes wrong, she has the next play attitude.” There was a long hiatus, however, between this win and the Black Knights’ 30-15 defeat of Section One rival Manheim Township on December 21. In that Township game, the Knights held the Streaks scoreless in the first quarter and carried an 18-3 lead into the second half. “Defense was huge in that win,” Merrifield said. “ We always try to shut down the other team’s leading scorer.” Moffatt led all scorers with 10 points and Baer added eight. “Lauren is a junior and she has grown so much since her freshman year,” Merrifield remarked. “She has improved her inside and outside games.” WRESTLING The Black Knights bring a great deal of experience from hard-working wrestlers to the mat this year. This year’s roster includes 15 upperclassmen who set the bar for the younger wrestlers.
Earning uncontested points “Clay Gainer is a guy I hope our younger guys are watch- via forfeits were Zymir ing,” head coach Shane Mack McCain-Murray (120), Seamus said. “He has worked hard Mack (126), Reagan LeFevre from his freshman year and (145), Dylan Bard (172) and should be a model for our Caleb Mussmon at 285. He has gotten back to his old form after an injury from last year.” As for the team’s outlook, given the number of solid returning wrestlers, Mack said, “We have experience and we have another good year coming up, if Staff photo we can keep things Ben Troyer drives the baseline on Erolling.” town’s Patrick Gilhool in Hempfield’s 4338 loss to the host Bears on January 4.

The Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County merged into a single YMCA association - the YMCA of the Roses - effective Dec. 1. The merger is intended to ensure the region has access to high-quality YMCA programming and allow the YMCAs in York and Lancaster to be more efficient stewards of the areas’ resources. On Sept. 1, 2020, the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County entered into a management agreement so that the York organization could provide CEO and human resource services to the Lancaster organization. Since then, the two associations have deepened their partnership by sharing staff, services, and programs. Both YMCAs’ leadership voted to move forward with a merger process, establishing a Merger Task Force, including
representatives from each YMCA and the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs, along with the York and Lancaster YMCA president/CEO. The task force conducted due diligence in the areas of property/risk/insurance, program and membership, governance, human resources, and finance, and it developed a formal plan of merger, which was approved by both boards and members. Members at both YMCAs will automatically become members of the new association in the same category as they were before the merger. There will be no significant changes to each YMCA’s programming or facilities, but both associations are adjusting their pricing models to establish consistency in the new association. Certain operations will be streamlined, such as timing of programs and online communications so that the merged YMCA can more efficiently serve residents in both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will keep its staffing structure largely the same. Larry M. Richardson, who has been the president/CEO of the YMCA of York and York County for over 27 years and the acting presi-
dent/CEO of the Lancaster Family YMCA since September 2020, will serve as the merged YMCA’s president/CEO. In each county, a director of operations will oversee the day-today activities of the branch. A single corporate office will manage both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will conduct centralized fundraising activities, but ensure that past, present, and future restricted funds are used for their intended purpose and align with the donor’s intent. The volunteer leadership for both associations will have an opportunity to continue serving with the new organization in some capacity. The YMCA of the Roses’ board of directors will be made up of volunteer leadership from both counties as will the various other committees related to overall operations of the merged YMCA. Local committees will ensure that each area’s operations are appropriate and relevant for their respective communities. Direct service volunteers, such as ones from United Way initiatives, will continue to have opportunities to serve their local YMCA. The merged YMCA of the Roses will run five branches
and five pools across both counties in rural, suburban, and urban communities. It will have a combined operating budget of about $15 million and over 500 employees, and it will serve over 30,000 members a year. YMCA of the Roses will work with over 1,500 volunteers for a combined 20,000 service hours and give out over $2 million in financial assistance so everyone can afford a YMCA membership. YMCA of the Roses will have an office for a New American Welcome Center in each county so that newcomers to the area can access YMCA resources. Its free or low-cost child development programs will serve 600 children. Summer camp in five locations across both counties, including financial assistance, will work to ensure that all the community’s children can go to camp. The organization’s leadership will continually evaluate community issues and resources so that it can implement charitable programs to meet the region’s new and emerging needs.
