be available to purchase from a cash bar before the party wraps up. Traditionally, Acorn Acres celebrates Groundhog Day with a scavenger hunt in Lancaster city. The event was created in 2021 by the organization’s founder, Betsy Shank, who sought a way to support local businesses in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I happened to have an Emmy-nominated and very cute groundhog, so I used Poppy’s
popularity to draw people to downtown businesses,” Shank said. Poppy acquired national fame after she appeared alongside Bill Murray in a commercial for the National Football League championship game in 2020. Shank decided to change the format of the event after Elliott took over as Acorn Acres’ mascot. Although Poppy was always comfortable in the limelight, Elliott is a younger and much more reserved groundhog. With this See Groundhog Day pg 4
“Hone y b e es p ollinate a third of everything we eat,” said Master Beekeeper Denny Gorman. “Without them, we wouldn’t have most of the fruit we eat. Honey bees also pollinate 100% of the almonds grown in this country.” Gorman, who is vice president of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society, is passionate about the insects. He invites other people who are interested in learning more to attend the 2024 New Beekeeper Workshop. It will be held on Saturday,
Jan. 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The event will cover everything people need to start the hobby of beekeeping. “We provide a continental breakfast and a very nice lunch,” Gorman said. “I personally teach a class in honey bee biology and hive biology. We teach classes in how to extract honey, where to place your hives, a little bit on diseases. We try to prepare a new beekeeper with the basic info they need to start beekeeping.” Gorman has been a beekeeper for seven years. He started the See Beekeeping pg 2

illersville-based wildlife rehabilitation center Acorn Acres will host its annual Groundhog Day celebration on Friday, Feb. 2, in downtown Lancaster. The festivities will kick off at Ville & Rue, 8 W. King St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The celebration will continue with an all-ages Groundhog Day party from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Imperial, 26 E. Chestnut St. Both events will be free to attend. At 11:30 a.m., Acorn Acres ambassador Elliott the groundhog will predict the weather forecast for the remaining winter months. This will be Elliott’s first prognostication, as the yearly ritual was previously completed by the wildlife center’s former mascot, Poppy. After Poppy’s death last February, Elliott has taken over the late groundhog’s responsibilities as the face of Acorn Acres. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available at Ville & Rue, and Poppy-themed items such as pillows, tea towels and tote bags will be available to purchase. Once the party moves to the Imperial, guests may enjoy various family-friendly activities including groundhog-themed crafts, cornhole, Jenga and live entertainment. A game of bingo will begin at 5 p.m., but there will be a twist: Players must yell “groundhog” to redeem a winning card. At 6 p.m., an educational program featuring Elliott will be held to offer guests information on groundhogs, followed by Elliott’s second prognostication at 7 p.m. for this year’s National Football League championship. Tickets for a prize drawing will be available until the winning numbers are selected at 8 p.m., and food and drinks will

battles. During the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, Bill was wounded by an artillery round, and he was awarded the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantryman Badge and four Theatre of Operations stars for his role in the fight. After the war ended in 1945, Bill returned to America and enrolled at Boston University to study geology and chemistry. Bill married his wife, Melva, in 1950, and they had four children together. While Bill was taking classes at Penn State University in 1957, he heard about a small school that was known as Millersville State Teachers College at the time; he didn’t know it then, but the school would become an accredited university and the home of his long teaching career. Bill and his family moved to Millersville one year later, and he earned both a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in the following years as he taught in Millersville. Bill was heavily active in the Millersville community both on and off the university’s campus. He helped obtain more than $1 million in grant funding as Millersville University’s director of grants and awards, and he personally testified before a House of Representatives committee to advocate for educational equipment programs. However, Bill’s endeavors were not limited to his own community; he traveled to China and the

Soviet Union in the ’70s as a member of the U.S. State Department’s scholar diplomat program. Following his retirement in 1991, Bill served on Millersville University’s board of trustees for more than 20 years, and he became an active member of the Penn Manor School Board and many others. Two of Bill’s children remained in Lancaster County after growing up in Millersville: Deb Shenk of Willow Street and David McIlwaine of East Petersburg. Bill’s daughter Meredyth Van Scherpenseel lives in Georgia, and his son Doug McIlwaine resides in Virginia. Regardless of the career path that his kids chose, Bill advocated for them as fervently as he did for his students. Shenk became an educator like her father, and she taught in Hempfield School District for 40 years, and Doug followed in Bill’s footsteps by earning a doctorate in chemistry from Brown University. David and Meredyth chose other paths, but the four siblings each practice their father’s values by actively volunteering in their own communities. “ W hen our dad was involved with something, he attended all the meetings and took his involvement seriously. We grew up seeing that you do more than just your job,” said Shenk. “We learned that when you commit to something, you give 100%.”
hobby after he retired from a career in business. “I wanted something to keep my mind sharp and something that I knew nothing about,” he said. He attended his first beekeeper workshop and now is vice president of the organization that got him hooked on the hobby. “B e es are am az ing l y intelligent,” he shared. “They can understand the concept of zero. They can recognize human faces.” Bees often get a bad rap, Gorman noted, because they sting , and he has endured his share of pain from the hobby. “After a while, it hardly bothers you at all,” he said simply. It’s worth the discomfort to know he’s doing his part to help the environment, he said. “As a group, we’re doing our best to save the bees,” he explained. Due to a variety of factors, including loss of habitat, the honey bee population is declining. Attending the workshop provides people with a one-year membership in the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. Established in 1876 as the Lancaster Honey Producers Association, the society exists to

promote better understanding of honey bee biology and behavior; provide public awareness, education and service; and promote honey and other products of the hive. Meetings include educational topics about beekeeping as well as hive checks at the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center located at 1446 Auction Road in Manheim. “Members can come once a month to the center, and they can learn all about the bees without having to handle the bees,” Gorman said. “Experts will show the hives and talk about beekeeping.” The workshop is a good first step into beekeeping, and it provides the perfect opportunity to get an idea of what beekeeping is all about, he noted. “If you are at all curious about honey bees and saving the bees, come to this workshop,” Gorman said. “ You’ll get a good, basic understanding of how important bees are to our environment and our food chain.” Space is limited for the workshop, and registration is required. BY CATHY MOLITORIS P U B L I S H E D B Y:
“O u r f a s t n a c h t s a re unique,” said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia. “These are handmade, not made by a machine, so no two are alike. It’s just like stars - each one is unique.” Holy Trinity will host its 100th annual fastnacht bake beginning Monday, Feb. 12. The sale will continue on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and on Mondays and Wednesdays for the next four weeks, wrapping up on Wednesday, March 13. “We call them ‘a little bite of heaven,’” said committee member Paul Resch. Added committee member Jim Knapp, “They’re so good. They are different than doughnuts because they are made with potato and yeast. We fry them in vegetable oil, and then we serve them by the dozen, plain or glazed.” Over the several weeks of the sale, hundreds of

volunteers will create the fastnachts, and the organizers are always looking for additional help. “We especially need help with rolling,” said Mahan. “There’s a certain way you roll, and if they are not rolled right, everything goes downhill.” She noted that no experience is necessary to volunteer. “There are people here who have been doing this for a long time, and they’ll teach volunteers,” she said. “It’s on-the-job training.” Shifts begin as early as 4 a.m., but help is particularly needed beginning about 7:30 or 8 a.m. “ Yo u d o n ’ t h a v e t o commit for a long shift,” Mahan said. “You can come for an hour or two.” Committee member Karen Sahd oversees volunteers who come in the night before each bake to prep the dough using the 100-year-old recipe. year - or more than 75,000. “ That puts it in perspective, 75,000,” he said. “You could fill a football stadium and give everyone a fastnacht.” Church members put together a history of the fastnacht bake in honor of the 100th anniversary, and Resch shared a little bit about the first bake. “In 1924, they had a fastnacht social,” he said. “It wasn’t a takeout sale. Pe o p l e c a m e i n t o t h e church, and there was dancing, and they raised $615 toward the construction of our new church, which broke ground in 1926. In today’s prices, that’s over $11,000.” Proceeds from the fastnacht sale will be used for maintenance and upkeep of the church and for projects at both the church and Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School (OLA). Resch noted that the fastnacht bakes are always fun, with camaraderie and
fellowship shared among generations. “I’m always impressed by the students from OLA and Lancaster Catholic who come here before school to help,” he said. The committee members reminded people to order early because the fastnachts always sell out. “Our fastnachts are artisan,” Sahd said. “I think that’s why they are popular, because they’re not available all the time. They’re a special treat.” Orders for fastnachts will be taken online only this year and will begin at https://holytrinity columbiapa.com/shop/ on Monday, Jan. 29. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, first-served basis. Latin violinist to visit schools and perform concert L atin violinist Jesus Florido will present a workshop on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 29 and 30, to all Hempfield string students in grades four through 12. He will introduce the students to Latin styles and teach them how to “groove” on their instruments. This activity is significant not only for its aim of helping
students to appreciate music from different cultures, but also because the district has a growing number of Latino students in musical programs. To culminate the residency, Florido will perform a concert on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Hempfield High School,
200 Stanley Ave., Landisville. He will be joined by Hempfield string students for several finale numbers. The concert is free and open to the public. Florido’s residency is made possible by a grant from the Hempfield Foundation. The foundation has been instr umental in providing education
experiences such as visits from world-class instrumentalists such as the Mari Black Trio, a multi-style folk music group, and jazz violinist Christian Howes. Rock violinist Tracy Silverman is scheduled to visit the school district in 2025. More information about Florido can be found at www.jesusflorido.com.

De-icing salts are widely applied to hard roads, sidewalks, and parking lots in winter. Salty runoff can then be washed into receiving rain gardens, bioswales, or other stor mwater management features. In this talk, attendees will hear about the impacts of this salty water on the vegetation, soils, and water quality performance of green stormwater infrastructure, and ways to try to reduce these impacts. T h i s e ve n t i s f re e of charge, but registration is required at http://tinyurl.com /SaltyStormwater.
